Abstract

The article discusses religion in Cuba in relation to a rise in the popularity of the Santería religion which was brought to Cuba by the Nigerian Yoruba slaves in the early 18th century. According to the article, Santería blends the Yoruba religion with the Catholicism of Spanish colonisers. It states that Santería recognizes 401 orishas (deities). The culture is Cuba is examined, along with the treatment of women and gay people under Santería.
