Abstract

The literature produced by German writers, who were forced to leave the country between 1933 and 1945, makes up the rich and heterogeneous set of works named Exilliteratur. From various strands and styles, these writers - that could hardly be regarded as belonging to a cohesive movement - faced the difficulties of exile, nevertheless went on writing and publishing their works, which often showed a clear opposition to fascism. This is the case of most texts published by Anna Seghers; assiduous collaborator of journals and associations, the writer put her efforts on the articulation of an intellectual resistance movement against Nazism. She has among her wide bibliography as one of its main titles Transit Visa [Transit]. The novel, which depicts the obstacles of European emigration from the French city of Marseille, reports the conditions in which thousands of Europeans found themselves in 1941. This fictional text is grounded on solid historical and spatial references, and the subjectivity of the narrator, as well as other characters, corroborate the likelihood of the plot, making the work be commonly associated with the critique of the historical fact of the German invasion of France and the massive migration that followed. The purpose of this article is to point out the elements that constitute the realism of the novel, contextualizing it and approaching it, though notably fictional, to testimonial accounts that were multiplied among the publications of Exile Literature.
