Abstract

From its setting up in 2002, Fundação Educação e Desenvolvimento - FED (Foundation for Education and Development) aims to support community development, given the subsequent instability that has been observed in the country and its implications on social and economic welfare of the population, in rural communities. FED has focused its activities on education, food security and health areas and operates in the Sectors of Safim and Nhacra. As a result of its experience presents this paper reflecting on "Education, participation and rural development: the case of Guinea-Bissau" and on its own actions. FED considers education, training and research powerful and effective instruments on fighting poverty and on promoting rural development. However, believes that it's necessary to adapt and contextualize education and training in rural areas, according with their specific features, needs, potential and limitations.
