Abstract

The article focuses on the compartmentalization of history by General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) and A-level students, which simplifies the complex past. Commenting that history is made of overlapping narratives, it recommends an enquiry based approach through real historical questions, structured chunks, and a double vision, which would help students to use knowledge flexibly. Suggestions include revision through card sorting, reading historian works and adding change enquiry.
