Abstract

The article focuses on the book "Wieś robotnicza. Zarys problematyki socjologicznej," by E. Pietraszek. The book gives a sociological evaluation of certain problems concerning villages where the majority of the inhabitants are active outside agriculture and the main source of income are occupations other than farming. The theoretical problems involved were found to be broader than the classical fields covered by rural sociology. The background data for the book were collected in field investigations carried out in Southern Poland between 1958 and 1968; and further data were derived from publications on the problems of industrialization and urbanization. The workmen's villages are mainly located in the southern part of Poland, where there is also the largest relative number of off-agriculture population. The original workmen's villages appeared in Poland at the end of the feudal epoch and during the succeeding development of industry. The twelve chapters of the book are devoted to the main problems of social, economic and cultural development, to the geographical distribution and mobility of the population.
