Abstract

An essay is presented which explores the history of preservation of the Grand Shrine of Ise architectural monument in Japan. The author reflects on the monument as a metaphor related to perceptions of antiquity in relation to modernity and national identity. Emphasis is given to topics such as the development of Japanese imperialism, global cultural heritage, and symbols of democratic nationalism following World War II.
