Abstract: The article discusses the political and ecclesiastical baroque career of Naples, Italy, and Madrid, Spain, papal nuncio and Milan, Italy archbishop Cesare Monti. It describes his political and diplomatic experience at the court of Madrid, his correspondence with cardinal Francesco Barberini, and management of relations with Roman congregations and secular authorities during a war involving the state of Milan. The article examines his work as an informal political envoy of the papacy to the State of Milan.
