Abstract

The article looks at how chance shapes the lives of humans and their attempts to influence and understand it in their everyday lives, through the science of basic quantum processes. Topics include scientist Isaac Newton's view of the universe, which the author argues left little room for randomness, a historical overview of the connection between a universe that admits randomness and one that admits free will, with comments from physicist Valerio Scarani, the beginnings of chaos theory, which are systems that appear to behave at random even though they are controlled by strict mathematical processes, and physicist John Bell's test for determining hidden variables in quantum systems.
