Abstract

The authors discuss the study "Stresses Developed Around Displacement Piles Penetration in Sand" by Z. X. Yang and colleagues. Topics covered include the discussion's objective of showing that the limitation of discrete-element method (DEM) models is not as strong an impediment to obtaining meaningful stress fields as the authors of the study may have feared, the three scales in which the analysis is performed, and the use of a cone penetration test (CPT) in a virtual calibration chamber (VCC).
