The article presents the authors' views on improving cost effectiveness and reliability of petroleum refineries in terms of hydrogen products line. Topics discussed include industry wide steam methane reformer (SMR) feedstock flexibility, integration of hydrogen, steam, and power production, and managing water usage and quality. Thermal desalination process (TDP), and outlook for petrochemical manufacturers and refiners are also discussed.
