The important role of the lips, both functional and aesthetic, makes their reconstruction to be a main concern for the plastic surgeon. Most of the lower lip defects result after excision of cancer rather than other causes, such as trauma, infection or congenital malformations. The oral competence is based, primarily, on a functional lower lip, with sensitivity, muscle function and an appropriate height, which determines the importance of its reconstruction. At this time, this reconstructive goal can be achieved only by local reconstruction methods.
