Abstract

The mechanism of the formation of MgF coatings on ferritic-martensitic and austenitic steels contacting liquid magnesium and gaseous silicon tetrafluoride (SiF) has been investigated. An MgF coating on steel possesses high plastic properties. The proposed method can be used to improve corrosion resistance of steels contacting freons and other fluorine-containing materials.
