Abstract
- The article discusses the difficulties encountered by Confederate forces in keeping escaped prisoners of war (POWs) incarcerated during the waning days of the U.S. Civil War. The article examines the policies of the Confederate States of America in removing POWs from Georgia following the campaign of U.S. general William T. Sherman in Georgia in 1864, the responsibilities of Confederate generals John H. Winder and William Gardner, and efforts by Confederate major general Samuel Jones to construct shelter for POWs in and around Charleston, South Carolina.
