Abstract

The article discusses seven of the world's biggest engineering schemes, whether they can be achieved, and their environmental impacts. Topics include environmental impacts of a plan to dam the Atlantic Ocean, called Atlantropa, which were first proposed by German architect Herman Sörgel in the 1920s, the construction of a trans-Atlantic aqueduct that would pump water from the Amazon River into Northern Africa, and flooding the Qattara depression in Egypt with seawater from the Mediterranean.
