Abstract

The article reports on historical research regarding West Africa that links the transatlantic slave trade with West African societies that practice polygyny in countries including Guinea, Togo, and Mali. Slave trade records from between 1545 and 1864 found that 66.4 percent of slaves sent to the Americas were men, skewing populations remaining in Africa and opening up opportunities for polygyny.
