Abstract

The article discusses the relationship between football and military service during World War II, focusing on the beliefs of U.S. Navy and Marine officers that college and professional football players made good soldiers and leaders. Other topics include the development of Marine recruiting programs on college campuses, the creation of a Marine football team at Camp Maui in Hawaii by Lieutenant Colonel Leroy B. Hanley, and the invasion of Iwo Jima, Japan.
