Abstract

The article discusses the development of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and its link to endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness. Topics include diabetic microvascular complications, irreversible blindness, and the atherosclerotic progression in patients manifesting insulin resistance. Other topics include type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS), and diabetes-related structural and compositional alterations to the ocular basement membranes.
