28. Influence of surface curvature on the impact force of water droplet.

Abstract

Although the global market for wind energy is growing rapidly, leading-edge erosion is a critical issue hindering the development of wind power. The impact force of a droplet colliding with flat surfaces has been investigated in previous studies. However, the impact force exerted on curved surfaces, such as that experienced by eroded wind turbine blades, is not well understood. This study discusses the relationship between the impact force generated on a solid surface by a water droplet and the radius of curvature of the impacting surface. The impact force by a droplet was measured using a force sensor mounted on semi-cylindrical caps with different radii of curvature. The measurement results showed that the impact force decreased as the radius of curvature decreased. A computational fluid dynamics model solving incompressible flows showed that, unlike the case of a curved surface, the initial momentum of the droplet was mostly transferred to the flat surface. This resulted in a high impulse for an impact with a flat surface. The falling droplet was blocked by the surface, and the lateral jet was accelerated sideward. This acceleration was moderate for curved surfaces. When colliding with a flat surface, a higher impact force was generated owing to the wider area of the excited surface pressure compared with that of the curved surface. Finally, the relationship between the peak of the impact force and the surface curvature was derived, suggesting that the force peak is inversely proportional to the curvature. Abstract

With increasing environmental concerns and energy crisis, a variety of renewable energy sources (RES) are being increasingly utilised worldwide. However, the integration of RES such as wind power and photovoltaics in large-scale can lead to increased load fluctuations, which can undermine the overall environmental benefits and pose risks to the secure and stable operation of the power system. To mitigate this challenge, a two-stage electricity production scheduling is developed incorporating energy storage system (ESS) and dynamic emission modelling (DEM). In the first stage, a multi-objective mixed integer programming model schedules the production of RES, increasing penetration rate and system stability. In the second stage, a data-driven dynamic emission model is developed to optimise the load allocation of thermal power unit to reduce the carbon emissions. Furthermore, a flexible operating reserve strategy is proposed to handle the uncertainty resulting from the intermittent character of RES. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively schedules the production of RES thereby alleviating the contradiction between high RES utilisation and stable system operation. Compared to the benchmark model, the proposed method can reduce the carbon emissions and total cost of the system by 20.34% and 10.65%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This scientific article presents the results of measurements of the parameters of wind energy resources from 2013 to 2020, to compile a wind energy inventory for the city of Dashoguz (Turkmenistan), geographical coordinates 41°49′00″ N. w. 59°58′15″ E. etc., and for a height of 100 meters the following wind parameters were determined: average speed (more than 6 m/s), daily variability of wind speed (from 3 to 12.68 m/s), frequency interval of wind speed (mainly wind speed 3 m /from 1850 hours), the direction of the wind in which it blows (northeast–24.83%); of course, specific power (274.22 W/m2) and technical potential (4344.08 MW hour/km2). The results obtained show that the city of Dashoguz has large wind energy resources, and has every opportunity to operate wind power plants in parallel with traditional stations, which in turn will help manage load peaks and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Abstract

Hydrostatic systems are characterized by the possibility of generating and transmitting large forces and moments, which are more difficult to achieve mechanically or electrically. The hydraulic energy generator (pump) can be connected to the drive element (hydraulic motor) with rigid or flexible pipes, which allows the latter to be located at a distance from the pump. If this principle is applied to a wind turbine, it results that the electric generator, which is usually located in the nacelle and is mechanically driven, can also be mounted on the ground and driven by a hydraulic motor. In this way, the mass located in the turbine nacelle decreases significantly, and the hydrostatic transmission also brings other advantages, related to maintenance, speed regulation, hydraulic energy storage, etc. The article presents a proposal for a hydrostatic transmission for a low-power wind turbine (below 100 kW). 44. SOLUTIONS FOR WIND RESOURCE ESTIMATION ON DIFFERENT TERRAIN MODELS.

Abstract

It is known that the growing need for energy has consequences that constitute major demands on the environmental conditions when the classical methods of obtaining are used. This is why this action to develop the capacity to produce energy from renewable sources must be Wind continued, among which wind power occupies a prominent place. Resource estimation is crucial for assessing the viability of wind energy projects. The accuracy of wind resource assessments depends heavily on the terrain over which the wind flows, as different terrains (flat, hill, mountain, coastal) affect wind behaviour in distinct ways. Solutions and methods for estimating wind resources across different terrain models can be developed by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations intended for complex terrains (hill, mountain areas). CFD models simulate the flow of wind over various terrain features by solving the Navier-Stokes equations. The simulations account for the complex interactions between the wind and the terrain, including turbulence, vortex formation, and speed-up effects providing high accuracy for the complex terrains, modelling the local effects such as ridges, valleys, different obstacles and providing further detailed 3D wind flow data. Using numerical analysis methods for wind resource estimation over terrain is feasible, especially for preliminary analysis. It is performed meaningful analyses by processing and visualizing terrain preliminary data, being able to generate further wind profiles using empirical models, applying simple numerical methods in order to estimate wind flow over terrain, permitting the results visualization to gain insights into wind speed distribution and potential energy yield. The method for wind resource estimation depends heavily on the terrain complexity, the scale of the project, the available budget and the required accuracy. A numerical approach is presented in this paper necessary for analyzing the wind resource potential, involving a combination of mathematical models with advanced simulations in order to establish solutions function of terrain complexity type. Starting from specific wind velocity and roughness characteristic values for each terrain type, which can have impact on wind flow, by means of a numerical analysis method the mean wind velocity profile for different heights and terrain types is highlighted. The modelling method used is represented by the logarithmic wind profile method which uses the mathematical model to estimate the wind velocity values at different heights above the ground. Abstract

Estimates of the land area occupied by wind energy differ by orders of magnitude due to data scarcity and inconsistent methodology. We developed a method that combines machine learning-based imagery analysis and geographic information systems and examined the land area of 318 wind farms (15,871 turbines) in the U.S. portion of the Western Interconnection. We found that prior land use and human modification in the project area are critical for land-use efficiency and land transformation of wind projects. Projects developed in areas with little human modification have a land-use efficiency of 63.8 ± 8.9 W/m2 (mean ±95% confidence interval) and a land transformation of 0.24 ± 0.07 m2/MWh, while values for projects in areas with high human modification are 447 ± 49.4 W/m2 and 0.05 ± 0.01 m2/MWh, respectively. We show that land resources for wind can be quantified consistently with our replicable method, a method that obviates >99% of the workload using machine learning. To quantify the peripheral impact of a turbine, buffered geometry can be used as a proxy for measuring land resources and metrics when a large enough impact radius is assumed (e.g., >4 times the rotor diameter). Our analysis provides a necessary first step toward regionalized impact assessment and improved comparisons of energy alternatives.

Abstract

Electrolyzers are expected to play a pivotal role in future renewable energy plants by facilitating the penetration of renewable sources and improving the economic viability of these systems. However, ensuring reliable and profit-optimizing dispatch strategies presents challenges, especially under fluctuating renewable generation and variable electricity prices. In this context, the present study formulates an optimization framework focused on establishing a detailed scheduling model for PEM electrolyzer systems, with the goal of maximizing the profit of a wind-electrolysis plant. The detailed electrolyzer model accounts for its non-linear hydrogen production performance and multi-state operation. Besides, the time resolution of 15-min is specified in the simulation to enhance the robustness of the model by allowing consideration of also some aspects of state transitions (i.e., cold startup). The analysis is applied to selected typical days in 2019 for Germany (DE) and Austria (AT). Results indicate that the electrolyzer adapts to variable energy scenarios in an efficient way. In particular, standby state is crucial at moderate average electricity price (e.g., 33.49 EUR/MWh) to avoid the need for a cold startup. This state offers an alternative to off state, thereby increasing the economic performance of the wind-electrolysis plant. Additionally, it is shown that the overall profit of the plant in the AT case exceeds the DE case due to the yearly average wind capacity factor in the AT case being 0.37, compared to the lower value of 0.31 in the DE case. In both countries, electricity sales constitute the main source of the total profit, particularly on typical days with high probability of occurrence. However, hydrogen sales also provide a notable contribution to the plant's total profit, accounting for over 50% in some cases. Finally, a sensitivity analysis on electricity prices and wind capacity factors is conducted to explore energy scenarios where producing hydrogen becomes economically attractive.
