The objective was to identify the best stocking density in the initial grow-out phase of tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) using biofloc technology (BFT) and evaluate the effects of the densities on water quality, zootechnical performance and the metabolic profile of fish and production costs. Juveniles (56.5 ± 1.69 g) were reared in the densities: 15 (BFT15), 30 (BFT30) and 45 (BFT45) fish.m−3, in triplicate, for 80 days. The use of BFT inoculum at the beginning contributed to the maintenance of adequate ammonia and nitrite concentrations at all densities, though with a higher nitrite concentration in BFT45. Electrical conductivity (EC), nitrite, total suspended solids (TSS), pH, alkalinity and hardness were different (p < 0.05) between BFT15 and BFT45. EC and TSS increased according to the increase in density, and were higher in BFT45. The highest final weight and specific growth rate were observed in BFT15, while the apparent feed conversion was lower for BFT15 and BFT30 compared to BFT45 (p < 0.05). Biomass and productivity were higher (p < 0.05) in BFT45. The values of hematocrit, number of erythrocytes and the hemoglobin concentration were higher in BFT45 (p < 0.05). Regarding production costs, the highest average feed expenditure occurred in BFT45; however, expenditure with electricity was lower at this density. The increase in biomass in BFT45 generated the reduction of the partial average cost (ACp). It can therefore be concluded that the best stocking density for initial grow out of tambaqui is 45 fish.m−3, since it presents better productivity and biomass, lower ACp and average expenditure on electricity when using BFT. Biofloc technology (BFT) has been identified as an effective and sustainable aquaculture method, particularly beneficial for warm-water species in tropical areas. This technology is widely used in intensive aquaculture for several aquatic species due to its capacity to significantly reduce water exchange rates, benefiting both production systems and the environment. The efficacy of BFT in farming operations is directly related to a proper management of water quality parameters within the optimal range of the target species, as these parameters directly impact the yield of production units. Essentially, BFT functions as a water quality management system, converting harmful nitrogenous waste such as ammonia and nitrite into less harmful forms such as nitrates through microbial activity, ensuring the health of aquatic organisms. Key environmental factors such as temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, salinity, alkalinity, TAN, nitrite, nitrate, settleable solids (SS), and total suspended solids (TSS) can affect the growth of aquatic species and the functionality of the microbial community. This review brings (i) a comprehensive bibliometric analysis on biofloc and water quality, (ii) highlights optimal ranges, and (iii) key observations of several water parameters including temperature, salinity, nitrogenous compounds, SS, TSS, DO, phosphate, pH, and alkalinity in BFT rearing conditions for key aquatic species. Elements such as countries, thematic and keywords, and authors were explored, correlated, and discussed. In addition, this manuscript also (iv) discusses the presence of heavy metals and microplastics (MPs) in BFT culture water. A dedicated review on water quality in biofloc technology will contribute to future research and development (R&D) in this topic, support decision-making to improve farming operations, and can help further expansion of BFT-based aquaculture. Reservoirs are essential sources to ensure water supply, especially in regions with a semiarid climate, prone to prolonged drought periods and water scarcity. An exemplary case is the semiarid region of Paraíba State, Brazil. Monitoring of water surface reflectance (WSR) and total suspended solids (TSS) is indispensable to address issues such as erosion, sediment transport, depo sition, reservoir siltation, water pollution, and associated human health risks, ultimately aiding in water resources management. This study introduced a novel approach to estimating the spatiotemporal dynamics of WSR and TSS, utilizing automated methods and MODIS images over 17 years (2000 ~ 2016) for the Epitácio Pessoa Reservoir. Three models, (a) model 1 (M1), (b) model 2 (M2), and (c) model 3 (M3), were employed to estimate WSR and TSS, chosen for their replicability, mathematical simplicity, and ecosystem similarity. A total of 775 images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard the Terra satellite, along with observed data, were used for the estimation. Model M3 yielded the best performance for estimating TSS, with values ranging from 270 ~ 961 mg/L (r = 0.57). Furthermore, a strong correlation (r > 0.93) was observed between the mean reflectance values for pixels sampled using two distinct extraction procedures (longitudinal profile and specific sampling points). This strong correlation underscores the potential utility of MODIS images for effective monitoring of WSR and TSS in comparatively smaller bodies of water in the Brazilian semiarid region. Importantly, this study represents one of the first applications for estimating WSR and TSS for a reservoir situated in a semiarid climate region. The study examined the core, buffer, and transition zones within the Cat Ba Biosphere Reserve in Vietnam to assess changes in five land cover categories (water surface, cropland, vacant land, residential land, and forestland) between 2018 and 2022. Additionally, we aimed to evaluate water quality using three indicators (normalized difference turbidity index, normalized difference chlorophyll index, total suspended solids) and air quality using four indicators (nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone) for the 2022 data. Land cover change analysis and monitoring of water and air quality indicators were conducted using the Google Earth Engine platform, employing Sentinel-2 imagery for land cover and water quality assessment and Sentinel-5P images for air quality assessment. The findings revealed correlations between changes in land cover and water and air quality indicators within the Cat Ba Biosphere Reserve. While occasional instances of values surpassing permissible limits were noted, the average values over the 12-month period in 2022 indicated that water and air quality indicators remained within acceptable thresholds. The present study aims to characterize three industrial wastewater samples collected from petrochemical, food and beet sugar industries to determine the pollution potential and select the appropriate pre-treatment approach. According to the biodegradability profile of the multi-sourced mixed (composite) sample, the advanced oxidation process (AOPs) namely, Fenton (F) and Electro-Fenton (EF) were adopted as pre-treatment techniques and the operating parameters such as time, type of electrodes, pH, voltage, iron and H2O2 concentrations were critically examined. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was conducted to compare the performance efficiency of F& EF AOPs for treating the composite samples and the total operating costs for both approaches were assessed. The results revealed that, the initial values of the composite sample were 7.11, 19.2, 32.6, 19.3, 937, 1512, 860, 3.9, 2110 and 2.34 for pH, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Electrical Conductivity (EC), Salinity, BOD, COD, Oil and grease (O&G), Total Phosphorous (TP), Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), respectively. In addition, EF process achieved more removal efficiency for COD, O&G, BOD, TSS, and TKN (84.3%, 69%, 85%, 72% and 71.27%) compared to Fenton which displayed 78.43%, 66%, 69%, 70.1%, and 61%, respectively. Moreover, there are statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) between the initial and final (pretreated) values of the composite industrial wastewater for the addressed parameters and EF was significantly (p < 0.05) more effective than F process. The total operating costs were 3.117 and 2.063$ for F and EF, respectively, which confirmed that EF is more efficient and cost effective than F process. It was concluded that electro-Fenton process is favorable, eco-friendly and cost-effective option for pretreating real complicated multi-sourced industrial wastewater. This research explores the enhancement of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes through the incorporation of chitosan derived from the lignicolous fungus Ganoderma sp. Utilizing wet phase inversion and solution casting techniques, chitosan was successfully integrated into the PES matrix, as confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), which indicated a high deacetylation degree of 75.7%. The incorporation of chitosan significantly increased the membrane hydrophilicity, as evidenced by a reduction in the water contact angle and a substantial improvement in pure water permeability, from 17.9 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 to 27.3 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. The membrane anti-fouling properties were also notably enhanced, with the Flux Recovery Ratio (FRR) increasing from approximately 60–80%. Moreover, the chitosan-modified PES/CS membrane, particularly at a 5% chitosan concentration, demonstrated exceptional efficacy in pollutant removal, achieving over 90% elimination of total suspended solids, cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb), alongside a 79% reduction in color during the treatment of textile wastewater. This study interrogates the state of social-ecological landscapes (SEL) in West Africa, focusing on two case studies: the Mankran SEL in Ghana (case study 1) and the Doma–Rutu SEL in Nigeria (case study 2). Using a mix of methods, the assessment was framed by the Drivers Pressure State Impact Response (DPSIR) model tailored for SEL evaluation (DPSIR-SEL). In the Mankran landscape, land use patterns shifted significantly from 2008 to 2018, with cash crop cultivation peaking at 30% in 2015 before declining to 14.5% by 2018. Water quality assessments in the Mankran micro-watershed indicated that several parameters, including Total Suspended Solids (TSS) at 914.41 ± 1974 mg/L, lead at 18.73 ± 17.26 µg/L, and arsenic at 53.41 ± 86.66 µg/L, exceeded World Health Organization (WHO) standards, raising concerns about potential contamination. In contrast, the Doma–Rutu landscape in Nigeria experienced land use and land cover (LULC) changes from 2000 to 2022, characterized by the expansion of residential and agricultural areas alongside modifications to natural water bodies and vegetation. Water quality issues have emerged, with elevated levels of electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, and salinity. Furthermore, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) revealed persistent herder-farmer conflicts in Nigeria, which have historically constrained crop production due to various environmental and social factors. The intertwined challenges faced by both the Mankran and Doma–Rutu landscapes underscore the urgent need for sustainable and inclusive resource management, adaptive land-use strategies, and proactive measures to safeguard water quality. This article examines the utilization and advancements of constructed wetlands (CWs) in South Asia (SA), focusing on their roles, costs, and efficacy enhancements through pre- and post-treatment units for various pollutants. Notable findings include Phragmites and Canna species as commonly used macrophytes, achieving high removal rates for various pollutants. CWs consistently remove total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, emerging contaminants, and antimicrobial resistant bacteria at substantial rates. Anaerobic baffled reactors are effective pretreatment devices for high-strength wastewater. Moreover, CWs exhibit lower operational and maintenance costs compared to conventional treatment methods. However, the bibliometric analysis reveals limited regional cooperation in SA. Key challenges identified include the absence of guidelines for media, vegetation, and maintenance. The review underscores the necessity for further research in optimizing CWs' efficiency through land area management, plant selection, and enhanced design and operation and maintenance protocols. Fast urbanization can result in significant stormwater runoff pollution due to changes in land use. A 3-year study on the distribution and temporal variations of urban water pollutants in stormwater runoff was conducted, with a specific focus on the influence of land-use patterns in the recharge zone of a regional karst aquifer in Texas (Edwards Aquifer). The presence and concentration of various water pollutants including total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), nutrients (nitrite, nitrate, ammonia and phosphate), total carbon (TC) and total organic carbon (TOC), oil and grease (O&G), and eight heavy metals (Fe, Mg, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd) were measured in stormwater samples collected from three bioswales. Results show that average TSS in site S1 (598.87 mg/L) and S2 (628.69 mg/L), COD in site S1 (103.97 mg/L), phosphate in sites S1 (1.44 mg/L) and S3 (0.65 mg/L), and O&G (ranging from 50.63 to 84.32 mg/L) in all three sites surpassed the national average (NSQD). While residential areas were identified as the main sources of nutrients, roads and parking lots were associated with heavy metals. Temporal variations indicated the effect of antecedent dry days on the concentrations of TSS and phosphate. Growing seasons as well as pet feces were associated with elevated nitrate concentrations in residential areas. Organic carbon was found overall higher during warmer months, while heavy metals during cooler months. The study also identified specific land-use practices that can be enhanced to mitigate stormwater pollution, such as the implementation of permeable pavements, rain gardens, and stricter waste disposal regulations. The aim of this study was to evaluate a natural coagulant, Moringa oleifera seeds (MOC), to reduce the color concentration in treated tequila vinasses (TVs). TV-A was the effluent of horizontal subsurface flow wetlands (HSSFW); TV-B was the effluent of vertical up-flow wetlands (VUFW); and TV-C was the effluent of vertical down-flow constructed wetlands (VDFW). Raw TVs were also evaluated with MOC. Jar tests were performed to find the optimal dose and pH value for apparent color (AC) removal. With the optimal dose and pH for each type of TV, tests were performed in triplicate to evaluate the removal of apparent color (AC), true color (TC), turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and electrical conductivity (EC). For TV-A and TV-B, the optimal values were 1 g/L of MOC and pH 8, and the removals were 52%, 43%, 50% and 72% of AC, turbidity, TC, and TSS, respectively. For TV-C, the optimal values were 2.5 g/L and pH 5, with removals of 66%, 73%, and 98% for AC, TC, and TSS, respectively. For TV-D, the MOC had no coagulant effect in any of the experimental conditions evaluated, probably due to the high concentration of turbidity and TSS in the raw vinasses, which prevented the interaction between MOC and melanoidins. Advancements in smart sensing and control technologies enable urban drainage engineers to retrofit stormwater storage facilities with real-time control devices for mitigating stormwater in-site overflow, downstream flooding, and overloaded total suspended solids (TSS) in drainage pipes. While the smart technology can improve the performance of the static drainage systems, coordinatively controlling multiple valve and gate operations poses a significant challenge, especially at a large-scale watershed. Using a benchmark stormwater model located at Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, we assessed the impact of different real-time control strategies (local individual downstream control and system-level multiple control) on balancing flooding mitigation at downstream outlets and TSS reduction at upstream storage units, such as detention ponds. We examined changes in peak water depth, outflow, and TSS as indicators to assess changes in water quantity and quality. The results indicate that system-level control can reduce peak water depth by up to 7.3%, reduce flood duration by up to 34%, and remove up to 67% of total suspended solids compared with a baseline uncontrolled system, with the outflow from upstream detention ponds being the most important hydraulic indicator for control strategy rule set-up. We find that system-level control does not always outperform the individual downstream controls, particularly in alleviating flooding duration at some downstream outlets. With urban growth and a changing climate, this research provides a foundation for quantifying the benefits of real-time control methods as an adaptive stormwater management solution that addresses both water quantity and quality challenges. This study aimed to develop an active biodegradable bio-based (polylactic acid/PLA) equilibrium modified atmosphere packaging (EMAP) containing a carvacrol-emitting sachet (created by poly-hydroxybutyrate) (PLA-PHB-CARV) to extend the shelf-life of cherry tomatoes at 15 °C and 25 °C. Cherry tomatoes in macro-perforated polypropylene (PP) films (mimicking the commercial packaging) or in PLA-based micro-perforated film without the carvacrol sachet (PLA) were also tested. Weight loss, decay, headspace gases, pH, titratable acidity (TA), total suspended solids (TSS), ripening index, color, texture, total viable counts (TVC), and sensory analysis were performed. Decay was 40% in PLA-PHB-CARV, and 97% in PP after 20 days at 25 °C. PLA-PHB-CARV showed lower weight loss (p < 0.05) and stable firmness compared to PP and PLA at both temperatures. TSS and TA were not affected by the packaging at 15 °C, while at 25 °C, the TSS accumulation was inhibited in PLA-PHB-CARV compared to in PLA and PP (p < 0.05), indicating a notable delay in the ripening process. PLA-PHB-CARV retained their red color during storage compared to PP and PLA. Carvacrol addition inhibited TVC compared to PP and PLA by ca. 2.0 log CFU/g during storage at 25 °C, while at 15 °C, the packaging did not reveal a significant effect. Overall, the results indicated that the developed active EMAP may be adequately used as an advanced and alternative packaging for tomatoes or potentially other fruits with a similar respiration rate versus their conventional packaging, showing several advantages, e.g., a reduction in petrochemical-based plastics use, shelf-life extension of the packaged food, and consequently, the perspective of limiting food waste during distribution and retail or domestic storage. The textile industry is vital to Bangladesh's economy, employing over three million women and being the top foreign exchange earner. However, it severely impacts the environment because of untreated wastewater discharge. High treatment costs, reliant on expensive imported chemicals, worsen the issue. The Environmental Conservation Rules (ECR) 2023 of Bangladesh requires textile wastewater discharge to have a colour of less than 150 Pt‐Co, which current systems struggle to meet affordably. A pilot project tested a sustainable solution using chemical oxidation with calcium hypochlorite and sand filtration with blast furnace iron slag. This method effectively removed colour, and the treated water showed total dissolved solids (TDS) levels of 157 ± 4 mg/L, total suspended solids (TSS) levels of 8 ± 2 mg/L and chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels of 9 ± 3 mg/L, with reductions of 92%, 87% and 94%, respectively, making it a viable solution for resource‐limited economies. Monitoring and analyzing reservoir water quality are crucial for ecological and environmental strategies. This study examines the differences between the water quality index (WQI) of Indonesia (WQI-INA), Malaysia (DOE-Malaysia), Oregon (WQI-Oregon), and Italy (PI-Prati), considering the tropical climate of Indonesia and Malaysia, and contrasting with the temperate climate of Oregon and the Mediterranean climate of Italy. Using data from the Sutami Reservoir in Indonesia from 2015 to 2021, the study assesses water quality parameters such as BOD, COD, DO, NH3, NO3, total suspended solids, total phosphorus (TP), and pH at various depths (0.3, 5, and 10 meters) across three sites (upstream, midstream, down-stream). The results show varied classifications: WQI-INA rated the reservoir as "pretty good," WQI-Oregon as "poor," and both DOE-Malaysia and PI-Prati as "slightly polluted." Spatial analysis of vertical distribution revealed "slightly polluted" (WQI-INA), "moderately polluted" (WQI-Oregon and PI-Prati), and "heavily polluted" (DOE-Malaysia). These discrepancies arise from differences in local environmental standards, regulatory requirements, and specific water quality concerns included in each index. The Sutami Reservoir water quality status was declared using WQI-INA, however, other methods were employed to simulate the worst-case scenarios and inform preventive actions. The Sutami Reservoir hyper-eutrophic conditions indicate a pollution load capacity of 65.22 tons per year. Critical parameters such as pH and TP highlight significant water quality and pollution issues. Recommendations for water quality treatment under heavy pollution conditions include applying 12.09-120.87 tons of lime, using 78.75-393.75 kg of chemical buffers, oxygen diffusion, controlling riparian vegetation over 2.37-23.7 hectares, dredging 37,100 m3 of sediment per year, and reducing nutrient sources through community involvement. This study aimed to determine the effect of bittern coagulant dosage and rapid stirring speed on reducing the concentrations of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), and dye absorbance in batik industry wastewater, as well as to identify the optimum coagulant dosage and stirring speed. Wastewater samples were collected from a batik industry in the batik center of Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia. Dosage variations of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% were tested alongside rapid stirring speeds of 100 rpm, 130 rpm, and 160 rpm. The study was conducted on a laboratory scale using the jar test method. Initial wastewater characteristics showed BOD, COD, TSS, and dye absorbance concentrations of 185.68 ± 29.34 mg/L, 10.091 ± 363.24 mg/L, 2.231.33 ± 155.55 mg/L, and 0.212 ± 0.02, respectively. Statistical analysis using the Pearson correlation test and Two-Way ANOVA revealed that variations in coagulant dosage and stirring speed significantly impacted the reduction percentages of BOD, COD, TSS, and dye absorbance. The optimal coagulant dosage was found to be 5%, and the optimal stirring speed was 100 rpm, with reduction percentages for BOD, COD, TSS, and dye absorbance being 80.32%, 65.86%, 92.35%, and 70.77%, respectively. This study aimed at studying the feasibility of using a sediment model built in HEC – HMS incorporating Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (MUSLE) in aiding the separation of sediment contribution as point and non-point, an important aspect in sediment pollution control. The model was developed and verified using a representative sub-catchment and a canal reach of a tropical climate. The field observations and model developed had a good agreement and indicated about 16% and 35% of total sediments in the canal may be from nonpoint sources for the dry and wet seasons, respectively. Results suggested that a major fraction of eroded sediment ended up in the main canal through the dense drainage network across the catchment. This meant sediment trapping should focus tributary drainage ditches or at point source inputs to canal rather than the main canal banks. The study recognized that HEC – HMS is also capable of simulating sediment generation with acceptable errors. Marine pollution poses significant risks to both human and marine health. This investigation explores the limnological status of the Odisha and West Bengal coasts during the annual cruise program, focusing on the influence of riverine inputs on coastal marine waters. To assess this impact, physicochemical parameters such as pH, salinity, total suspended solids (TSS), dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and dissolved nutrients (NO2-N, NO3-N, NH4-N, PO4-P, SiO4-Si, total-N, and total-P) were analyzed from samples collected along 11 transects. Multivariate statistics and principal component analysis (PCA) were applied to the datasets, revealing four key factors that account for over 70.09% of the total variance in water quality parameters, specifically 25.01% for PC1, 21.94% for PC2, 13.13% for PC3, and 9.99% for PC4. The results indicate that the increase in nutrient and suspended solid concentrations in coastal waters primarily arises from weathering and riverine transport from natural sources, with nitrate sources linked to the decomposition of organic materials. Coastal Odisha was found to be rich in phosphorus-based nutrients, particularly from industrial effluents in Paradip and the Mahanadi, while ammonia levels were attributed to municipal waste in Puri. In contrast, the West Bengal coast exhibited higher levels of nitrogenous nutrients alongside elevated pH and DO values. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the seasonal dynamics and anthropogenic influences on coastal water quality in Odisha and West Bengal, highlighting the need for targeted conservation and management efforts. With the aim to establish clean and sustainable sludge treatment, green conditioning using natural flocculants has recently gained a growing interest. In this study, a variety of plant materials, namely Moringa (Moringa oleifera) seeds, Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) seeds, Potato (Solanum tuberosum) peels, Aloe (Aloe vera) leaves, Cactus (Opuntia ficus indica) cladodes, and Phragmites (Phragmites australis) stems, were evaluated for their potential bioflocculant activity in conditioning sewage sludge. They were thoroughly characterized to determine their active flocculating compounds. Sludge dewaterability was evaluated by assessing various sludge parameters, including specific resistance to filtration (SRF), dryness of filtration cake (DC), and total suspended solid removal (TSS) from sludge filtrate. The collected results from various physicochemical characterizations of plant materials suggest that the main flocculating agents are carbohydrates in Cactus and Fenugreek and proteins in Moringa, Potato, and Phragmites. Additionally, all tested plant-based flocculants demonstrated effective dewatering performance. Interestingly, compared to the chemical flocculant polyaluminum chloride, Moringa and Cactus showed superior conditioning effects, yielding the lowest SRF values and the highest DC. As a result, the use of these natural flocculants improved sewage sludge filterability, leading to a significant removal of total suspended solids from the filtrate. The conditioning properties of Moringa and Cactus can be attributed to their high protein and sugar content, which facilitates the effective separation of bound water from solids through charge neutralization and bridging mechanisms. Thus, green conditioning using plant-based flocculants, particularly Moringa and Cactus materials, presents a promising and eco-friendly approach to enhance sewage sludge dewatering for safer disposal and valorization. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the impact of different concentrations of clove extract (CE: 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0%) on the viscoelasticity, viscosity, syneresis, texture, sensory quality, and antioxidant properties of set yogurt up to 21 days in cold storage. The addition of CE enlarged the total suspended solids (TSS) and mineral contents while reducing whey separation. On the other hand, CE existence dropped the consistency index (k) and elastic modulus (G') of yogurt gels and further lessening was observed with prolonged storage period. Moreover, the textural firmness remained unaffected whereas gels that are more cohesive were attained with integration of CE. Similarly, total phenolics and free radical scavenging activity increased significantly (p < 0.05) by CE supplementation, and amplified lipid oxidation was observed with increased storage time. Addition of CE lowered the lightness (L*) index and manipulated the organoleptic properties whereas the sample with 1% CE showed improvement in texture and flavor; however, the overall acceptability reduced for samples with higher concentration of CE. This study evaluated the biological and physicochemical parameters of the Oda River, including the detection of heavy metals. To achieve this purpose, a quantitative experimental research design was employed. Twenty-four water samples were taken along the Oda River from Obeng ne Obeng, Abuakwaa, and Odaso communities. The samples were analysed in a laboratory, and the results were compared to the irrigation water quality standards from the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). The study found that the concentration of turbidity and total suspended solids exceeded the recommended standards of FAO, while the river’s pH, electrical conductivity, and total dissolved solids concentrations were within permissible boundaries. Lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and fluoride were present at concentrations lower than the recommended guidelines, whereas copper and cyanide were not discovered. However, iron concentrations exceeded the FAO guidelines. Escherichia coli concentrations in the Obeng ne Obeng were lower than the FAO irrigation standards but were higher in the Abuakwaa and Odaso. The Pearson correlation coefficient highlighted significant correlations between the physicochemical parameters. This study explored the synthesis of potash alum from disposed aluminum cans for water purification. The effect of the labels on the cans on the yield of alum was also investigated as it is economically beneficial for industry. Single crystals of potash alum were obtained and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Through a series of jar test experiments, the characterized alum samples were used to purify river water samples. Some of the parameters investigated include; pH, turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The results show that the alum samples were able to reduce the turbidity by 100 % and substantially decrease the TSS, TDS and COD over the five-hour period of study. This study evaluated the performance of a pre-treatment facility for SuDS water quality improvement designed to handle the stormwater runoff of a 200 m2 parking lot, using synthetic runoff and a statistical model of two levels of operation and four variables. The prototype consisted of an inlet ramp, sedimentation and filtration tank, and a recirculation system. The results showed that the removal efficiency of total suspended solids (TSS) and fats and oils concentration in the effluent are not affected by influent variations in flow rate, pH, temperature, TSS, fats and oils, and lead concentration. For the 32 measurements taken, an average of 82.9% (SD 3.6%) was obtained regarding total suspended solids removal. Lead retention possibilities were also observed. The TSS removal efficiencies were above 90.6% for precipitation events, generating peak flows of up to 5 L/s and a duration of 21 minutes, controlling the diffuse pollution peak. In shrimp farming, the development of alternative production systems, such as fermented products, can help reduce the high dependence on artificial diets and ensure more sustainable growth. The "synbiotic system" typically uses low stocking densities in traditional earth ponds. To increase profitability, the tendency is to increase stocking densities, especially in small production units. The objective of the following work was to use the "synbiotic system" in different stocking densities, analyzing the water quality, the microorganisms present, the proximal composition of the formed bioflocs and the zootechnical performance. For this, 12 tanks with an area of 35 m2 each were used. Stocking densities were 30, 60, 90 and 120 shrimp/m2. Fertilization was carried out for seven days before the shrimp stocking and then every two days until the end of the experiment. The experiment lasted 45 days, and no water was renewed. Significant differences were observed in several quality parameters, including alkalinity, nitrate, total suspended solids, and turbidity. However, no significant differences were found in the proximal composition of the formed bioflocs. The presence of microorganisms throughout the experimental period indicated the effectiveness of adding fermented rice bran for nutrient assimilation. Furthermore, significant differences were observed in the final weight, feed conversion rate and productivity. The ability of the synbiotic system to provide food supplementation, control water quality and present satisfactory zootechnical performance was demonstrated, proving to be efficient in the cultivation of Litopenaeus vannamei. The objective of this study was to explore the environmental factors having the greatest influence on the distribution and abundance of epipelic diatom species in different wetlands in southern Spain. We previously defined four groups of conductivity categories: fresh (< 0.8 mS cm−1), oligosaline (< 8 mS cm−1), mesosaline (8–30 mS cm−1) and eusaline (> 30 mS cm−1). A dbRDA analysis performed on a subset of 36 of the 53 wetlands, using a total of 25 environmental variables, showed that five environmental variables (conductivity, pH, wetland area, silicates, and total suspended solids) were the best explanatory variables for the diatom assemblage, with conductivity being the main explanatory variable. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) analysis performed on the set of 53 wetlands revealed significant differences in diatom composition among the four conductivity groups. The key species in the eusaline group were Tryblionella pararostrata, Halamphora sp.1 and Cocconeis euglypta, whereas in the mesosaline and oligosaline group, these were Navicula veneta, Tryblionella hungarica and Nitzschia inconspicua. Finally, in the fresh group dominated Achnanthidium minutissimum, Navicula veneta and Gomphonema exilissimum. This study investigates the efficiency of a hybrid coagulation–flocculation process for the treatment of industrial wastewater from the steel industry. The novel method combines a natural coagulant, processed Rosehip Seed Powder (RSP), with a chemical coagulant, aluminum chloride (AlCl3), across varying concentrations and pH levels. The study simulated the pH 8 conditions of iron and steel industrial wastewater and examined the removal of heavy metals, total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and ammonia–nitrogen (NH3-N). At pH 8, the optimal coagulant dosage was determined to be 0.75:0.75 (g/g) of RSP/AlCl3 powder, resulting in high removal efficiencies across several parameters: 88.29% for COD, 91.85% for color, 99% for TSS, 93.11% for NH3-N, 94.3% for Mn, 98.5% for Fe, 96.7% for Zn, and 99.3% for Ni. The pH optimization demonstrated high removal efficiencies without pH adjudication. The removal of heavy metals at pH 8 demonstrated high efficiencies, with Mn, Fe, Zn, and Al achieving 99.00%, 90.6%, 95.73%, and 92.3%, respectively. These results suggest that no pH adjustment is required when using RSP/AlCl3 for the treatment of iron and steel industry wastewater through the coagulation method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reservoirs fulfil several societal needs, including water storage, energy production, flood control and recreation. However, the interruption of the river continuum may cause water quality declines that compromise water use. The surrounding landscape is a key driver of water quality variation in space and time, both across and within catchments. Therefore, understanding how landscape composition, structure and functioning influence reservoir water quality can help address management challenges. Here, we aim to investigate the current use and predictive capacity of landscape functioning indicators for reservoir water quality prediction. First, we carried out a literature review to investigate which landscape factors are most frequently studied as drivers of water quality in lentic systems. Then, we tested the predictive capacity of landscape functioning indicators in four reservoirs in Portugal using linear mixed models and multi‐model inference. The literature review shows that most studies assess the effects of landscape composition while landscape functioning is rarely included. Our test using four reservoirs suggests that landscape functioning indicators, namely greenness and brightness, can complement landscape composition and structure indicators, improving the capacity to predict total suspended solids, chlorophyll‐a, and total phosphorous. Landscape functioning indicators portrayed temporal variability in ecosystem dynamics that was not encompassed by landscape composition or structure indicators and may be relevant to predict specific water quality parameters. Our results show landscape functioning indicators can improve modelling of landscape contributions to water quality and thus have great potential to contribute to monitoring, modelling and forecast systems for water quality and ecological status. Water quality of wetland ecosystems is a critical concern due to its implications on human health and aquatic life. This study was conducted to assess the spatial and temporal variation of water quality in Kotagala wetland to understand its impact on water safety for domestic uses and ecosystem health. Water samples were collected (n = 70) from six inlets and the wetland outlet from November 2021 to August 2022, and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), salinity, total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), nitrate, and phosphate. The pH, EC, and nitrate showed significant correlations. Spatial clustering divided the monitoring sites into two clusters, as areas of higher and lower pollution levels. Discriminant analysis highlighted the significance of EC, pH, and nitrate concentrations in differentiating these clusters. Principal According to principal component analysis (PCA) 88.8% of the total variance of spatial variation in water quality was explained by the first two components. Temporal clustering following seasonal variations revealed the influence of rainfall pattern on water quality. EC, TDS, TSS, and nitrate concentrations emerged as the most important factors in this temporal categorization. In PCA, 76.8% of the total variance of temporal variation in water quality was explained by the first two components. Findings highlight the urgent need for sustainable strategies and policies to mitigate the impacts of human activities on wetland water quality, since water quality variations in the wetland was significantly impacted by direct human activities, and variations in rainfall trends in the area. A low-cost carwash wastewater reclamation unit comprising a lamella settler and filtration unit was designed and fabricated in the laboratory. A newly designed lamella settler, Reflux Lamella Settler (RLS), consisting of two inclined sections, was incorporated for the first time in the reclamation unit with the objective of enhancing the sedimentation process. Furthermore, organoclay was employed as a component of the filtration unit to remove oil contents. The analysis of the reclaimed water demonstrated a notable reduction in the Total Suspended Solids (TSS), from 821 mg/L to 98 mg/L, in turbidity from 253 Nephelometric Turbidity units (NTU) to 2.70 NTU, and in the oil content from 26 mg/L to zero. This implies a substantial removal of the above substances of 88%, 98.9%, and 100%, respectively. Similarly, the concentration of hardness was reduced by 62.8%, from 321.6 to 120 mg/L, that of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) by 65.3%, from 274 mg/L to 95 mg/L, that of total solids by 65%, from 1590 mg/L to 543 mg/L, and that of total dissolved solids by 47.9%, from 769 mg/L to 400 mg/L. These results indicate that the reclaimed water was suitable for car washing. Moreover, a study on the RLS demonstrated a reduction in turbidity from 253 NTU to 175 NTU, 150 NTU, 130 NTU, and 10 NTU, respectively, after 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 24 hours. The escalating challenges posed by municipal landfill leachate (MUNL) necessitate the quest for green and sustainable solutions. This study aims to introduce Parkia biglobosa seed extract (PKSE) as a potential novel eco-friendly flocculant for efficacious removal of total suspended solids (TSS) from MUNL. Real MUNL samples were obtained from an active landfill managed by Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) Nigeria, enabling the optimization of operational parameters. The objectives encompass assessing PKSE applicability in MUNL treatment, extending beyond removal efficiency; optimizing the MUNL remediation process using response surface methodology (RSM); conducting a comprehensive cost–benefit analysis; exploring the coagulation–flocculation kinetics governing the treatment process; and utilizing optimized parameters for designing a type II settling tank. Physiochemical characteristics of PKSE were determined via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methodologies, which revealed its suitability for this purpose. Optimal conditions unveil a remarkable TSS: 95.84% with a 29-min settling time, employing 50 mg/L PKSE dosage at pH 12. Stochastic appraisal endorses cost–benefit viability and sedimentation models, ensuring residuals ≤ 30 mg/L. The proposed tank geometry (aspect ratio of 2/1) aligns with MUNL concentration, offering a pragmatic design implication. Net cage aquaculture has a significant impact on the regional water environment, and studying the changes in water quality parameters in net cage aquaculture areas is of great practical significance for understanding the impact of regional aquaculture on the water environment. This article uses GF-1WFV data to construct an inversion model for the total suspended solids concentration in the net cage aquaculture area, which has grown exponentially in the Manwan Reservoir area in recent years. The results indicate that the model has high accuracy, with an average relative error of 9.65% between the inverted values and the measured values, and a root mean square error of 0.33mg/L. Based on the constructed inversion model and satellite imagery, the total suspended solids concentration in the Manwan net cage aquaculture area was inverted, and the variation patterns of total suspended solids concentration in the reservoir area and different net box positions were analyzed. Research has found that the variation pattern of suspended solids concentration in the Manwan reservoir area and different positions of net cages is basically consistent. The total suspended solids concentration in net cages has not shown any abnormalities due to the phenomenon of local "delineation" in aquaculture, but is lower than the overall suspended solids concentration in the reservoir area. This is mainly because the variation of total suspended solids concentration is mainly affected by precipitation, surface runoff, water flow velocity, etc. Net cage aquaculture can reduce its impact on the total suspended solids concentration in local "delineation" areas. This study has certain reference significance for understanding the changes in total suspended solids concentration in the Manwan reservoir area and net cage aquaculture area. In the future, a multi-source remote sensing data remote sensing estimation model for water quality parameters will be developed for understanding the changing patterns in water environment in the Manwan net cage aquaculture area. Wastewater generated in dairies has a strong polluting potential and must be treated for disposal into water bodies or reuse. The objective of this work was to analyze the efficiency of removing pollutants through the processes used by a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of a dairy located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. For this purpose, the results of the characterization analyses referring to raw and treated wastewater were interpreted. The results showed that the sequence of processes used in the WWTP (water/oil separation, dissolved air flotation, followed by biodegradation in an upflow anaerobic filter) is efficient in removing on average 99.1% of COD and 98.7% of BOD5. For treated wastewater, data on pH and concentration of total suspended solids, total ammoniacal nitrogen, surfactants, settleable solids, and oils and greases also met the standards for disposal into water bodies. For reuse in agriculture, treated wastewater can be used for irrigation, but it is recommended to additionally evaluate the Escherichia coli parameter. When evaluating the existence of linear correlation between COD and BOD5 data, it was possible to find only a moderate correlation (R2 equal to 0.7) for treated wastewater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The swift pace of industrialization, urbanization, and burgeoning populations propel the surge in demand for manufactured goods and infrastructure. The wastewater produced during leather processing comprises a cocktail of organic and inorganic chemical contaminants that have the potential to affect the environment. This study focuses on conducting a comparative physico-chemical, analytical, in vitro, and in silico toxicity assessment and monitoring of leather effluent discharged from two different areas, namely, Dewas and Ranipet. The physicochemical analysis of collected effluents revealed higher levels of biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, and heavy metals than the permissible limit fixed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The X-ray powder diffraction analysis of both samples identified the existence of crystalline and amorphous phases. The functional composition of compounds was identified through the analysis of Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, which revealed the existence of C-H, O–H, N–H, C = O, C=C, and C≡C stretching vibrations. A variety of compound derivatives, including amines, organic acids, organometallic compounds, alcohols, hydrocarbons, esters, aldehydes, ketones, aromatic, and organogermanium, were identified by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. An assessment and monitoring of the phytotoxicity of effluent on the germination of Vigna radiata seeds reveals that (100%) of both Dewas and Ranipet leather effluents inhibited seed germination by 33.34% and 100%. The incorporation of Absorption-Distribution-Metabolism-Excretion-Toxicity (ADMET) analysis improved comprehension of the toxicity profiles of the GC–MS-identified compounds. Moreover, the result of docking studies revealed that cytochrome P450 showed the highest binding affinity towards 1,3-benzodioxol-2-one, hexahydro-cis with an affinity score of − 7.1 kcal/mol. The overall research revealed that the leather effluents from Dewas and Ranipet exhibit significant toxicity, highlighting the necessity of better wastewater management. Soil and water characteristics in micro basins with different land uses/land cover (LULC) can influence riparian vegetation diversity, stream water quality, and benthic diatom diversity. We analyzed 18 streams in the upper part of the La Antigua River basin, México, surrounded by cloud forests, livestock pastures, and coffee plantations. Concentrations of P, C, and N were elevated in the humus of forested streams compared to other land uses. In contrast, cations, ammonium, and total suspended solids (TSS) of water streams were higher in pastures and coffee plantations. These results indicate that LULC affects stream chemistry differently across land uses. Vegetation richness was highest (86–133 spp.) in forest streams and lowest in pastures (46–102), whereas pasture streams had the greatest richness of diatoms (9–24), likely due to higher light and temperatures. Some soil and water characteristics correlated with both true diversity and taxonomic diversity; soil carbon exchange capacity (CEC) correlated with vegetation diversity (r = 0.60), while water temperature correlated negatively (r = − 0.68). Diatom diversity was related to soil aluminum (r = − 0.59), magnesium (r = 0.57), water phosphorus (r = 0.88), and chlorophyll (r = 0.75). These findings suggest that land use affects riparian vegetation, while physical and chemical changes influence diatom diversity in stream water and soil. The lack of correlation between vegetation and diatom diversity indicates that one cannot predict the other. This research is an essential first step in understanding how land use changes impact vegetation and diatom diversity in mountain landscapes, providing valuable insights for environmental monitoring and conservation efforts in tropical cloud forests. This study aims to investigate the effect of different seasons (where the temperature would be different) on the performance (phosphorous, nitrogen, and organic matter removal) of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) based wastewater treatment plants. The modified activated sludge model 2D (ASM2d) module, including the microbial kinetics is used to simulate the enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) SBR process and the temperature is chosen between 10 and 33°C. Influent data from two distinct wastewater treatment plants located in India and Europe are considered. The investigation of the kinetic variables is performed over a wide temperature range, and significant increases are seen as the temperature rises. The effluent parameters are within the government regulations. It is clear that an increase in temperature results in better effluent quality with reduced values of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), ammonium nitrogen and ammonium ions (NH4), and total nitrogen (TN) and a slight increase in total phosphorus (TP) and total suspended solids (TSS). According to the current findings, as the temperature changes from low to high levels, the values of COD, BOD, TN, and NH4 decreased by 2.50, 14.92, 5.80, and 9.90% respectively, for Indian data. There is a slight increase of 1.07% in the TSS profile. Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) has made several environmental impacts, resulting in the significant siltation of water bodies due to the deposition of sediments on riverbanks. Based on this perspective, this study aims to investigate the water bodies and regions most impacted by mining activities, especially in relation to the increase in the Total Suspended Solids (TSS) caused by ASGM, focusing on the territories of Suriname and French Guiana, over the period from 2017 to 2023, through the creation of an algorithm in Google Earth Engine. This research also aims to map and describe active mining in this region using the Classification and Regression Tree (CART) method, which achieved an overall accuracy of 82% and a kappa index of 0.77. The results reveal that from 2017 to 2024, there was an increase of 148.09 km2 in mining, with an average increase in TSS of up to 167 mg/L in water bodies most affected by mining activities. Finally, the continued importance of using remote sensing technologies, such as GEE, together with innovative methodological approaches, to monitor and manage natural resources in a sustainable manner is highlighted.

Abstract Urbanization and industrialization in this modern time actually cause less availability of daily based water. In searching of a preferable solution to overcome this critical problem, waste water treatment seems to be considered as a much valuable option for reusing water. For this, sewage water treatment plants (STPs) are widely used. But this solution is actually ironical, as STP treatment causes hazardous damage to the environment in treating waste water. This system needs lots of harmful chemicals, high energy, and high build-up to operate the process. But a newly considered technology has come to counteract all these problems of STPs and the method is ‘Vermifiltration’. In this technique, earthworms are used to treat waste water. Earthworm’s body acts as biofilter and it can reduce higher percentage of BOD, COD, TSS from the waste water compared to the STPs. Earthworms eat up the sewage, making them treated, neutralized, and non-harmful and finally excrete them with several useful microorganisms. The symbiotic activity between earthworms and microorganisms works to filter the waste water. This method is completely odour less and harmless. No sludge is formed. With having all these characteristics, vermifiltration becomes much better option for the environment. In this review, the method of vermifiltration, its limiting factors, utilization and future developments are properly discussed.

The increasing pollution of river systems poses a significant challenge to water quality management and public health. This study was conducted to evaluate the water quality of the Gomati River in India, focusing on the impact of anthropogenic activities on pollution levels across different seasons. The primary objective was to develop a comprehensive assessment model using an effective weighted fuzzy soft expert system (WFSES) to derive a weighted water pollution score (WWP-score) for rating water pollution levels based on various water quality parameters. To achieve this, we employed a fuzzy soft set (FSS) methodology integrated with a weighted fuzzy soft set (WFSS) model to analyze water quality indices at six sampling stations along the Gomati River, the largest river in Tripura, India. Originating from the Raima and Sarma streams, the river flows westward through key regions, providing 249.39 million cubic meters of water annually, essential for drinking, agriculture, fishing, and transportation. The study utilized crisp data summaries of key water quality parameters, including pH, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, electrical conductivity, biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, total hardness, chloride, total alkalinity, and total coliform, across the pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon seasons from May 2022 to April 2023, guided by the distribution of waste discharge points. Fuzzy membership functions were defined for these parameters, and the root mean square (RMSQR) operation was used to combine multiple FSSs. The results revealed that the WWP-scores, a measure of water quality, ranged from 0.744 to 0.872 across the sampling stations, with Srimantapur exhibiting the highest level of pollution and Udaipur showing comparatively better quality. These scores indicate that water quality at all sites falls into the poor category, with Srimantapur experiencing the most severe contamination due to high levels of coliform bacteria and organic pollutants. Abstract\nNOVELTYThis study investigates the treatment of combined wastewater from Hattar Industrial Estate using Biofilm Wetlands (BW) planted with monoculture species: Eichhornia crassipes (EAC), Pistia stratiotes (WL), and Arundo donax (GR). Each species showed distinct capabilities in organic degradation, metal uptake, and pH stabilization. BW2, planted with EAC, achieved the highest total solids (TS) and total suspended solids (TSS) removal efficiencies of 66% and 65%, respectively. GR effectively reduced initial COD concentrations from 232 mg/L to 58.67 mg/L, while EAC and WL reached reductions to 72.78 mg/L and 70.67 mg/L, respectively. Overall, the plant efficiency ranking was EAC > GR > WL. Vibrio spp. is a group of heterotrophic bacteria that are ubiquitous in marine habitats, with various ecological and clinical importance. This study investigated the environmental factors that regulate Vibrio spp. dynamics in various tropical marine habitats, including nearshore (an estuary and a coastal beach) and offshore transects located northwest and southeast of Peninsular Malaysia, while focusing on the distribution of attached and free-living Vibrio spp., population growth, and community composition. The results showed that > 85% of the Vibrio spp. in nearshore waters occurred in attached form and correlated positively to total suspended solids (TSS) and Chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations. On the other hand, Vibrio spp. growth rates were positively correlated to dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, but negatively correlated to total bacterial counts, likely due to resource competition. In addition, high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA V3-V4 region showed that Vibrio spp. in these tropical waters contributed < 1 − 18% of the whole bacterioplankton community, and the six major Vibrio spp. taxa were V. alginolyticus group, V. brasiliensis, V. caribbeanicus, V. hepatarius group, V. splendidus group and V. thalassae. db-RDA (cumulative variance explicated = 93.53%) further revealed the influence of TSS, DOC, and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) to the Vibrio spp. community profiles. Simple Summary: The use of Artemia as a supplement to commercial feed during the nursery period, i.e., from post-larvae 10 up to post-larvae 30, is a common procedure in the shrimp industry. This practice provides larger and more resilient post-larvae (PL) that perform better in grow-out ponds. However, the production of brine shrimp is limited to a few natural salt lakes or man-made salt ponds worldwide, subject to strongly fluctuating yields and product quality. Therefore, ongoing research is focused on finding adequate live food alternatives. Nematodes, commonly known as worms, are animals that greatly fulfil the requirements to be used as live feed for aquatic organisms. Nematodes can be reactivated from their desiccated state by simple rehydration. Additionally, they are rich in protein and fatty acids, making them a favorable nutritional diet for shrimp larvae culture. This study demonstrated that nematodes can substitute Artemia in a co-feeding regime for the nursery of shrimp in a biofloc system, increasing the survival of the post-larvae after 20 days. This study evaluated nematodes as an alternative to live Artemia when provided in a co-feeding regime to Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) post-larvae (PL) reared in a biofloc nursery system. A 20-day experiment employing PL11 was performed for an evaluation of four dietary groups: control [C] (fed exclusively with a dry commercial feed); artificial Artemia [AA] (dry feed composed of extracted and processed Artemia cysts and dry commercial feed); live Artemia and dry commercial feed [LA]; and nematodes and dry commercial feed [N] (Panagrolaimus sp. dry nematodes). The diets were provided twice a day, with the remaining six feed provisions being a commercial dry feed for all experimental groups. A biofloc system was chosen as it offers a potentially sustainable approach to intensive shrimp farming. Alkalinity and pH in the [N] group were significantly higher in the last 5 days of the experiment (p < 0.05), likely causing the significantly lower nitrite levels observed in that same group (p < 0.05). Total and volatile suspended solids were significantly lower in the two live feed groups when compared with [C] and [AA] (p < 0.05). Although PL fed the dry diets exhibited higher growth rates (p < 0.05), the [N] and [LA] groups presented significantly higher final survivals (p < 0.05). No differences were found for survival after a salinity stress test (p ≥ 0.05). Evaluating the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and their impact on receiving surface water bodies is a complex and highly significant task due to its regulatory implications for both environmental and public health. The monitoring of many water quality parameters related to the compliance of treated wastewater with environmental standards has led to the development of a unitless metric, the Wastewater Quality Index (WWQI), which serves as a practical tool for regulatory authorities. The aim of this research is to propose an appropriate WWQI methodology, incorporating a set of water quality indicators and a weighting approach, to evaluate wastewater effluents under operational monitoring. In this study, WWQI was successfully applied to access the operation of 21 WWTPs' effluents within a single monitoring campaign, outside the mandatory monitoring schemes. The WWQI was computed for physical-chemical parameters including chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total suspended solids (TSS), electrical conductivity (EC) and pH, priority substances (Cd, Ni and Pb) and a specific contaminant (Cr) using the weighted approach in the WWQI calculation, based on equal weighting, expert judgement and PCA weighing using factor loadings. The three approaches give similar results for the calculated WWQI. The expert judgment approach is more suitable for evaluating WWTP performance during a single monitoring campaign due to its simplicity compared to the PCA-based approach and its ability to prioritize specific water quality parameters over an equal weightage method. The study investigates the feasibility and performance of an indigenously designed algal-bacterial biofilm reactor (ABR) for treating graywater in rural areas. Focusing on both treatment efficacy and sustainability, the research explored two key areas: optimizing the ABR for efficient graywater treatment and evaluating the use of readily available, low-cost materials for its construction. To achieve this, ABR was optimized to handle the specific characteristics of rural graywater, including potential seasonal variations in nutrient concentrations. The optimized ABR's adaptability was rigorously assessed across various operational modes--batch, fed-batch, and continuous--demonstrating consistent removal efficiencies for key pollutants (COD, nitrate-nitrogen, total dissolved phosphate, and total ammoniacal nitrogen) under changing conditions. The fiber supportbased ABR demonstrated significant pollutant removal from rural graywater: 81% COD reduction, 49.5% nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N), 88.46% total dissolved phosphate (TDP), and 83.42% total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN) in batch mode. Moreover, there was almost complete removal of total suspended solids (from 142 mg L-1 on Day 1 to 0 mg L-1 on Day 6) and total coliform (39,000 CFU mL-1 to 30 CFU mL-1). Notably, these removal efficiencies remained consistent across fed-batch (and continuous operation modes), showcasing the ABR's adaptability. This adaptability facilitated a significant increase in treatment capacity, scaling from 3 L treated in batch mode (6 days) to 40 L in fed-batch mode (12 days) and a continuous treatment rate of 20 L per day. Further enhancing the sustainability of this approach, the study successfully employed readily available natural materials like bamboo pipes and sheets for constructing the ABR. This innovative design resulted in a remarkable increase in biomass productivity (9.8 g m-2 day-1) compared to polypropylene fiber-based reactors (4.5 g m-2 day-1) with enhanced treatment potential for all the parameters in batch mode (77.7% COD removal, 86% NO3-N removal, 81% TDP removal, 92% TAN removal, and 100% removal of total coliforms). This study highlights the importance of managing fishpond effluent to minimize its impact on aquatic environments. Fish effluents are a major concern worldwide in aquatic environments. It also provides information on the impacts of effluents on the water quality index of streams when released into aquatic environments. Streams and fishponds were sampled bimonthly for two annual cycles, covering different sampling stations both upstream and downstream of the fishpond effluents at 50-m intervals. Water quality parameters associated with in situ conditions were determined in the field. In the laboratory, other physicochemical parameters were determined via proper standard protocols. The results of the study revealed that water quality parameters such as turbidity, total suspended solids, total solids, conductivity, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand and organic matter recorded in water samples collected from 50 m upstream at the point of effluent discharge were significantly (p < 0.05) different from those recorded at other sampling stations. The WQI value of the discharge point was higher than the WQI recorded in both the upstream and downstream sections of the stream. The findings of this study showed that the point of discharge of fishpond effluents is particularly concerning for the receiving stream compared with other sampling points. This localized area has experienced marked deterioration in water quality, posing significant threats to the health and biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems. The effluent's impact, though slight when dispersed in the receiving waterbody, underscores the necessity for adequate management practices to mitigate its adverse effects. Effective strategies, including regular monitoring, effluent treatment, and sustainable pond management, are imperative to ensure the long-term health and resilience of the aquatic environment.
