After being founded in 1963, the Fédération Sportive des Handicapés Physiques de France (FSHPF) began a timid move towards regional structuring, with the creation of a Comité Régional Lyonnais-Forez-Dauphiné-Savoie (CR-LFDS) – alongside that of Ⓘle-de-France – in 1965. From 1968 onwards, the strengthening of links with the French State Department for Youth and Sport helped to accentuate this movement. The FSHPF, renamed the FFSHP in 1968, finally obtained a delegation of powers from this department on 20 June 1972. This article looks at the conditions and reasons for this accelerated recognition by the State. It puts forward the hypothesis that it was paradoxically the result of the crisis that led to the split into two federal organisations in early 1972 (the FFSHP and the FFOHP, created on the initiative of the president of the CR-LFDS). This hypothesis is explored by crossing the archives of the Department of State for Youth and Sport and those of the two rival federations (as well as testimonies collected from the leaders of the time). These archives shed light on the tensions generated in the early 1970s by the organisation of international sporting events and the desire to control the development of a growing sport for the physically disabled. In 1971–1972, the crisis that erupted around the organisation of the "World Winter Games" helped the FFSHP gain the status of a delegated federation, a prerequisite for its entry into the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) in 1973 and the secondment of technical advisors by the State (1976). This study explored the effect of different dual-task (DT) training programs on DT interference in adults with intellectual disability. Center-of-pressure (CoP) mean velocity in single-task (ST) and cognitive-DT conditions and the Timed Up-and-Go Test (TUGT) during ST, cognitive-DT, and motor-DT conditions were assessed before and after intervention in a cognitive–motor training group, a motor–motor training group, and a control group. Before training, CoP mean velocity and TUGT time increased (p <.001) in DT compared with the ST condition. After training, the CoP mean velocity values remained unchanged (p =.07) in DT compared with the ST condition among the cognitive–motor training group. Furthermore, compared with the ST condition, no increase (p = 1) was reported in the TUGT time during the cognitive-DT condition for the cognitive–motor training group and during the motor-DT for the motor–motor training group (p =.12). Background: To prospectively examine the association between physical fitness and risk of disability retirement in a large population-based cohort. Methods: This study utilized data from Health 2011 survey Physical Activity subsample (n = 4898), combined with information on disability retirement derived from 2 national registers. In total, 2455 individuals aged 18–74 years underwent the physical fitness test protocol concerning measures of cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, and balance. The outcome variable was disability retirement, during the follow-up period of 9 years. After excluding those not at risk of disability retirement (ie, age ≥63 y) or who had already been granted disability pension, and those who had not completed the fitness protocol, the analytical sample included 1381 participants. Data were analyzed using Cox regression model with SPSS (version 29). Results: During the 9-year follow-up period, 61 individuals (4.4%) transitioned to a disability retirement. Cox regression analysis showed an association between the various physical fitness subdomains and the risk of disability retirement. In model 1, all fitness tests were associated with the risk of disability retirement, except the one-leg stand test with hazard ratios ranging from 1.69 (95% CI, 0.86–3.34) to 5.75 (95% CI, 1.84–17.90). Further adjustment for sociodemographic, health behavior, and health-related covariates attenuated the associations and statistical significance was lost, except for the vertical jump test (hazard ratio = 4.33; 95% CI, 1.32–14.10) and 6-minute walk test (hazard ratio = 3.81; 95% CI, 1.35–10.70). In this paper, we analyze the subjective inclusion experiences of visually impaired (VI) adult tennis players from an ableism-critical perspective. The primary focus of this research is the inclusive potential of blind tennis from the perspective of VI individuals. Episodic interviews were conducted to capture subjective perspectives. A qualitative text analysis revealed that the interviewees were confronted with multiple ability assumptions by sighted people in their everyday lives. Deficit notions on the performance of VI people included sports, work, and general activities. Participation in blind tennis helped the interviewees build a "competent identity" and acquire various skills useful for their everyday lives as participation in blind tennis was a pathway for competence in sports. Further research is needed to identify exclusion experiences from the perspective of disabled people to recognize the potential of different sports in reducing barriers to participation. Disability is a basic human condition that affects a significant proportion of the world's population, yet many disability- and accessibility-relevant issues remain pressing and insufficiently addressed. With three experiments, the current research investigates potential reasons for why marketplace disability accessibility has not been universally accepted. Potential barriers to greater accessibility in marketplaces may arise because such efforts appear at odds with other salient priorities, at micro (i.e. consumer) and macro (i.e. firm, policy, or societal) levels. In the proposed framework and resulting experiments, micro-level trade-offs prompt perceptions of personal cost and macro-level trade-offs prompt perceptions of firm morality. In turn, these perceptions mediate firm evaluations, showing that consumers at baseline respond negatively to accessibility. Critically, however, several practical interventions emerge from these processes. Marketers can mitigate consumers' negative responses to accessibility by employing simple framing choices such as emphasizing who benefits or noting what the purpose of the offering is. By demonstrating one way to better understand perceptions of the full spectrum of the consumer population, this research provides pathways for consumer researchers to further delve into disability-related research in the future. Background: The current physical activity guidelines recommend engagement in strength activities at least 2 days per week. Currently, there is a lack of literature examining strength activities among people with disabilities. The purpose of this study is to estimate and compare the prevalence of engagement in strength activities and adherence to strength activity guidelines among adults with and without disabilities in the United States. Methods: A total of 1,005,644 adults (18–80 y old) with and without disabilities from the 2013 to 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were included in this secondary data analysis. Descriptive analyses were performed to describe the prevalence of strength activity behaviors of adults with and without disabilities. Logistic and Poisson regression models were performed to evaluate the relative contribution of disability status on strength activity behaviors. Results: A higher proportion of participants without disabilities (46.42%, 95% CI, 46.18–46.65) reported engaging in strength activities compared with participants with disabilities (30.68%, 95% CI, 30.29–31.08; P <.01). Participants with disabilities were less likely to engage in strength activities (odds ratio = 0.51, 95% CI, 0.50–0.52; adjusted odds ratio = 0.75, 95% CI, 0.73–0.77) and meet strength activity guidelines (odds ratio = 0.56, 95% CI, 0.54–0.57; adjusted odds ratio = 0.75, 95% CI, 0.73–0.77) than participants without disabilities. Conclusion: Experiencing a disability is associated with lower engagement in strength activities; thus, it is important to identify effective and efficient approaches to promoting strength activities among people with disabilities. Drawing upon value theory, this study investigates both the enabling and disabling features of marketplaces for consumers in the disability market. Analysis of longitudinal qualitative data collected before and after the introduction of a new disability service provision scheme in Australia offer empirical evidence of such marketplaces that are both creating and destroying value for people with disability and their carers. In some instances, value creation and destruction can co-occur for individual consumers. These empirical insights lead to a theoretical conceptualisation of the marketplace as not being wholly disabling, but rather consisting of disabling and enabling factors. Using the Capability Approach (CA) as a means of identifying the barriers that individuals with disabilities face in achieving their goals, this conceptual paper aims to provoke discussion and identify how society excludes and marginalises individuals with disabilities. As framed through the lens of consumer vulnerability, reimagining how society, policy makers and the market can transform lived experiences, representation and symbolism of disability, this paper calls for a coherent and integrated set of actions. Central to these actions is a proposal for a transformative approach to marketplace access as a coordinated force to deliver positive change for people with disabilities. Through developing a new conceptual way of how the market should engage with disability, this paper presents proposals looking to ensure individuals with disabilities experience the conditions in which they can pursue their ultimate ends. This article describes the perceptions and experiences of collaboration between teachers of physical education (n = 3) and special educators (n = 3) on teaching pupils with disabilities. Using a qualitative approach, the study seeks to establish the nature and extent of collaboration among these teachers and to identify the benefits and barriers to implementation. Semistructured interviews were used as the main data source. Data were collected from teachers working in the public school system in the southern part of Finland. The findings indicate that while teachers are mostly aware of the value of collaboration, its implementation varies immensely among the different schools. While the special educators in this study see themselves mainly responsible for supporting pupils with disabilities, the physical education teachers showed a strong commitment to the subject matter of their teaching. This systematic review synthesized the literature on digital health interventions for the promotion of physical activity (PA) among people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism. From an initial screening of 553 records, 10 studies underwent full-text review. Data were extracted relating to study, intervention, and sample characteristics and PA-related findings. Methodological quality was evaluated using the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool. There were mixed findings pertaining to the effectiveness of digital health interventions for promoting PA among these populations. Positive results were reported for three of five active-video-game interventions, two of three social-media-based interventions, and one of two e-learning/multicomponent interventions. Digital health interventions can potentially be effective for promoting PA among people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism. However, the large variation in the samples and intervention types and a reliance on pre- and quasi-experimental research designs suggest that inferences should be made with caution and additional research is needed. Objectives: Sedation is commonly utilized for individuals otherwise unable to receive dental treatment, such as those with disabilities, medically complex conditions, and dentophobics. The aim was to characterize the profiles of patients receiving various types of sedation and assess the corresponding success rates. Method and materials: This was a 5-year records-based retrospective study. Data regarding the indication for sedation, medical history, sedation type, and treatments performed were recorded. Results: In total, 103 patients underwent 389 treatment sessions under sedation; 42.7% of the patients were disabled. The most commonly administered sedation was moderate sedation, (49.4%), followed by deep (36.8%) and inhaled sedation (13.9%). Successful treatment results were achieved in 96.1% of sessions, with no adverse effects noted during recovery. The high success rates were independent of patient age, sex, and sedation type. There was a positive association between the indication for sedation and the type of sedation. The medically complex patients and the dentophobic patients received mainly moderate sedation (85.3% and 58.2%, respectively), whereas the disabled patients received deep sedation (51.2%). In total, 94% of patients were returning (revisiting) patients. A statistically significant association was found between the type of sedation administered and the success rate during the first and last sessions (P< .001). The success rate at the first session may be predictive of the success in subsequent sessions. Conclusion: A significant positive correlation was found between patient characteristics and the chosen sedation type leading to a high success rate across the various sedation modalities. Background: People with physical disabilities (PWD) participate in less physical activity than people without physical disabilities (PWoD), which increases the risk for several negative health consequences. Comparing physical activity between PWD and PWoD remains a challenge since no reliable and valid survey exists to measure physical activity in both populations. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was adapted to be inclusive of PWD using a recently developed survey adaption framework; however, the adapted IPAQ has not been assessed for reliability and validity. The objective of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of the adapted IPAQ. Methods: To assess test–retest reliability, the adapted IPAQ was completed twice within a 72-hour period by 172 individuals (PWD: n = 102, PWoD: n = 70) and compared using intraclass correlation coefficients. Using Spearman rho, convergent validity and construct validity were assessed in 62 individuals by comparing the adapted IPAQ against the original instrument and activity monitor measured step count, respectively. Results: The adapted IPAQ demonstrated moderate test–retest reliability, with intraclass correlation coefficients of total scores for the total sample of.690 (95% confidence interval [CI].581–.770) and among subgroup analysis (PWD,.640, 95% CI,.457–.761; PWoD,.758, 95% CI,.610–.850). Correlation coefficients were also good for the assessment of convergent validity of total score (.727; 95% CI,.579–.829; P <.001). Construct validity assessment yielded moderate coefficient (.406; 95% CI,.166–.596; P =.001). Background: Although physical activity (PA) is an important determinant of health, physically disabled individuals tend to have a sedentary lifestyle. The Barriers to Physical Activity Questionnaire for People with Mobility Impairments (BPAQ-MI) is a self-report instrument evaluating PA barriers. This study was intended to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Persian version of BPAQ-MI (P-BPAQ-MI) and to report the prevalence and severity of PA barriers among Persian-speaking individuals. Methods: The translation and back translation of the BPAQ-MI was conducted according to an internationally accepted guideline and tested on 163 participants to assess its reliability and validity. Internal consistency and test–retest reliability were analyzed using Cronbach alpha and Spearman correlation coefficient. Convergent construct validity was established by comparing the scores of P-BPAQ-MI and The Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire. Known-groups construct validity was assessed with regard to type of assistive device and sex of the individual. Prevalence and severity of the barriers were reported by computing the percentage and means of "yes" answers. Results: The P-BPAQ-MI domains demonstrated very good internal consistency (Cronbach alpha of.77–.95) and excellent test–retest reliability (Spearman rho of.73–.96) with a significant inverse small correlation with Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire indexes. The P-BPAQ-MI successfully discriminated between individuals with different assistive devices and sex. Community Built Environment barriers were the most prevalent and severe. Conclusions: The P-BPAQ-MI is a valid and reliable instrument to assess the PA barriers of people with physical disability. The community barriers were the most frequently reported obstacles to PA. Purpose: To examine the feasibility and utility of the Fitbit Charge HR to estimate physical activity among ambulatory children and youth with disabilities. Method: Participants (4–17 y old) with disabilities were recruited and asked to wear a Fitbit for 28 days. Feasibility was assessed as the number of participants who adhered to the 28-day protocol. Heat maps were generated to visually examine variability in step count by age, gender, and disability group. Between-group differences for wear time and step counts by age, gender, and disability type were assessed by independent sample t tests for gender and disability group, and a 1-way analysis of variance for age group. Results: Participants (N = 157; median age = 10 y; 71% boys; 71% nonphysical disabilities) averaged 21 valid days of wear time. Wear time was higher in girls than boys (mean difference = 18.0; 95% confidence interval [CI], 6.8 to 29.1), and in preadolescents (mean difference = 27.6; 95% CI, 15.5 to 39.7) and adolescents (mean difference = −21.2; 95% CI, −33.6 to −8.7) than children. More daily steps were taken by boys than girls (mean difference = −1040; 95% CI, −1465 to −615) and individuals with a nonphysical disability than a physical disability (mean difference = −1120; 95% CI, −1474 to −765). The heat maps showed peaks in physical activity on weekdays before school, at recess, lunchtime, and after school. Conclusion: The Fitbit is a feasible tool for monitoring physical activity among ambulatory children and youth with disabilities and may be useful for population-level surveillance and intervention. Identifying factors that influence physical activity (PA) among individuals with Down syndrome is essential for PA promotion. Insight can be gained from guardians and health professionals. The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of guardians and health professionals on facilitators and barriers of PA in individuals with Down syndrome. Interviews were conducted with 11 guardians (five mothers, four fathers, and two legal guardians) and 11 professionals (four PA specialists, three physical therapists, and four occupational therapists). Grounded theory was applied. Barriers and facilitators fit the levels of the ecological model of health behavior: (a) intrapersonal (perceived rewards), (b) interpersonal (interaction), (c) community (availability of programs), (d) organizational (school systems), and (e) policy (education). Guardians and professionals agreed on the importance of enjoyment, interaction, and programs to promote PA. Differences between groups were identified at the organizational and policy levels. This study explored the association between socioecological factors and outdoor physical activity (PA) and play in children with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Parents (N = 133) completed a survey to report changes in their child's outdoor PA and play during the pandemic (from prepandemic levels), and child, household, and neighborhood environment factors. Children with a PA-supporting parent and from multichild and White households had lower odds of reporting decreased outdoor PA. Children from multichild, higher income, married couple households and a PA-supporting parent had lower odds of decreased outdoor play. Living in neighborhoods with higher urbanization (i.e., high dwelling density, street intersections, and land-use mix) was associated with greater odds of decreased outdoor PA and play. Future research that uses larger and more representative samples of children with disabilities is needed to test for the multivariate effects of socioecological variables on outdoor PA and play. How do advertising trade press and association resources advise practitioners on considering disabilities in advertising work? What does the industry think are effective practices for taking disabilities into account fairly and respectfully? This article answers these questions by closely reading prominent industry articles and multimedia materials focused on recommendations regarding how to take disabilities into account in advertising work. Using critical disability scholars' critiques of the advertising industry's considerations of disability as a guide, critical discourse analysis was applied to trade articles and multimedia materials published between 2018 and early 2023 by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), Adweek, and Ad Age, all leading advertising industry trade publishers among U.S. advertising practitioners. These analyses present some emergent themes about what the industry tells itself are the effective practices to represent disabilities and reach and include people with disabilities. Careful attention is paid to the similarities and gaps between industry recommendations and scholarly and activist guidelines to see where the industry sees itself in its journey of disability diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. The article is devoted to the study and analysis of the acts defining the rights of persons with disabilities, providing for the ways of their guarantee and protection, which were adopted within the Council of Europe. The concept of human rights mechanisms, in particular, in the activities of regional international intergovernmental organisations, is revealed. The author demonstrates the complex multilevel nature of the European system of human rights protection, which includes special regulatory and institutional instruments. Some acts of the so-called 'soft law' of the Council of Europe are analysed. It is shown that the first documents of the Council of Europe in the field of the rights of persons with disabilities concerned mainly the economic rights of this category of persons. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of ensuring the required number of jobs, professional retraining and professional assessment of employees who have lost the ability to perform certain types of work. With the further improvement of human rights protection mechanisms, the Council of Europe's strategy for ensuring the rights of persons with disabilities has also changed. Member states agreed on the importance of expanding the range of freedoms for people with disabilities. This was due to the existence of numerous barriers to access to social services, cultural life of society, diversification of leisure activities, etc. The recommendations that were subsequently adopted included provisions on the absolute prohibition of discrimination on the basis of disability in such areas as education, transport, public services, political, social and cultural life of the state. The article also analyses the concept of universal design, which was introduced to ensure that the infrastructure of European countries is accessible so that every person with a disability can receive the necessary social services with minimal interference from third parties. The article examines the issue of protection of persons with disabilities from violence and ill-treatment, whether committed by relatives, healthcare professionals or third parties. The author identifies the categories of persons who are more vulnerable due to the combination of disability with certain other characteristics, such as age, gender, social status, citizenship, etc. The author reveals a new approach of the Council of Europe to ensuring the rights of persons with disabilities, which provides for the elimination of social barriers and their full integration into society. The paper presents a comparative mixed methods study of the accessibility and usability for disabled people of four video conferencing tools, Zoom, MS Teams, Google Meet and Skype. Useable responses were obtained from 81 disabled people with diverse characteristics, mainly in the UK, though some groups had low representation. None of the tools was considered fully accessible and useable. Zoom was both the most commonly used and the most frequently preferred (56.1%) tool, with MS Teams second in usage and a trailing second in preferences (15.9%). It was considered to have better captioning, but otherwise to generally be a poor second to Zoom. Skype was the most commonly used before lockdown, but was considered dated and its limited use was mainly social, whereas the other tools were also used in work and education. The results were used to draw up separate lists of recommendations for developers and meeting organisers and hosts, as the study also identified actions for organisers and hosts to improve meeting accessibility. Developer recommendations include several easy to set customisation and user friendly interface features, involving disabled people and specific accessibility features, including compatibility with assistive technology, keyboard shortcuts for all functions and automatically-on high quality captions. Researchers have drawn attention to people's perceptions of reproductive health in Vietnam. Disabled people in Vietnam have been shown to have particularly low awareness and knowledge of reproductive health, in particular, women with disabilities have varied reproductive health knowledge because some of them have access to better reproductive health information than others. In this situation, non-government organizations (NGOs) and self-help groups (SHGs) contributed great value and provided a great resource for people with disabilities. This article explores the important roles of NGOs and SHGs, as they provide reproductive health information to people with disabilities. The aim of this study was to explore the choice and control that people with a psychosocial disability (disability related to consequences of mental ill-health) experience as they engaged with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and to understand aspects that impeded their choice and control. NDIS is an Australian, personalised funding, insurance scheme designed to provide supports that enable individuals living with disability to live an 'ordinary' contributing life. This lived-experience-led, qualitative study employed constructivist grounded theory methods. Twenty people were interviewed in-depth. Findings evidenced the poor experiences of choice and control people had on the Scheme. Choice and control were impeded by systems and processes as well as failure to accommodate for challenges associated with mental ill-health. Introduction of the 'psychosocial recovery framework' offers hope of improved experiences of choice and control, but it needs to be accompanied by cultural change across the NDIS service system. POINTS OF INTEREST: Many factors impeded opportunities for choice and control for people experiencing disability associated with mental illness when engaging with the Australian personalised budget scheme for people with disabilities. These factors existed throughout people's 'journey' on the Scheme; from the time people begin to apply for access right through to the stage where they were living with their personalised plan. Processes and practices of the Scheme sometimes made things worse rather than better for people experiencing disability associated with mental illness. The medical model of disability describes a widespread approach to disability common since the 1800s that views disabilities of all sorts as abnormalities that need to be cured or eradicated. Under the medical model of disability, medical care for disabled people has focused on making the bodies and brains of disabled people conform as closely as possible to society's idea of a normal person. This emphasis on normalization was and continues to be extremely harmful to disabled people. In this paper, I propose retroactively changing the term medical model of disability to normalization model of disability to avoid conflation with useful medical care and to highlight normalization as the quintessential harm of the model. Points of interest: Disability models are mental maps that shape all aspects of life for disabled people. The medical model of disability has dominated societies for a long time. The medical model sees disabilities as abnormal and tries to make disabled people conform to our idea of a normal body or brain. Trying to make disabled people just like so-called normal people is very harmful and hurts disabled people. In this article, the author suggests we change the name of the medical model of disability to the normalization model of disability so that everyone understands clearly just how harmful normalization is. The author also suggests we change the name because disabled people might want medical care in some circumstances. Human rights have become the dominant framework for understanding and resolving the marginalization of disabled people. Particularly since the 2007 introduction of the CRPD, many countries have formally adopted policies of ensuring equality by way of this framework. Nevertheless, socio-economic and political equality remain elusive. This article argues that part of the problem is the degree to which the human rights framework, through the principle of 'undue burdens', is compatible with an economic model of disability. In this model, full and equal participation for disabled people equates with the ability to perform socially valued roles, particularly in the field of work. This performance in turn requires a burden of invisible, i.e. unpaid and unrecognized work. The article develops the concept of invisible work in the context of disability studies, suggesting that it is an important analytical tool for identifying the shortcomings of the human rights and anti-discrimination framework. This paper reports on the ways that coherence emerged as an ableist norm within a systematic review of literature around broken narratives. It was undertaken as part of a larger programme of research investigating the experiences of those with impaired speech. The review identified 34 sources, within which we explored the ways that coherence was discussed. Throughout the review we argue that these texts draw on, and in many cases re-enact, coherence as an ableist norm. Discussions of broken narratives were often built upon the concept of coherence, a concept which has been naturalised and rendered essential to the formation of meaning and personhood. This norm is then employed to fuel a constitutional divide between broken and unbroken narratives. However, some of the texts provide the impetus to question the usefulness of normative ideals of coherence, and to re-evaluate how we can ensure the voice of impaired speakers is heard. Points of interest: This study examined 34 articles and book chapters about broken narratives. These texts came from many different disciplines and talked about many different types of illness and disability. Many of these texts talked about the importance of coherence in peoples' lives. Coherence was discussed not merely as an element of communicative success, but rather as a prerequisite to a healthy and functioning self. However, the stories of disabled people often do not follow cultural expectations of what a narrative should be. As a result disabled narratives are thought of as broken. When we try to enforce coherence on narratives or voices which do not fit our expectations we can end up silencing disabled people. Field experiments have demonstrated unequal treatment of wheelchair users on the labour market. This study relies on qualitative interviews with employers previously involved in a field experiment and focuses on perceptions of workplace accessibility. The findings demonstrate three different groups of employers: the physically bounded, the unconcerned and the accommodating employers which have different perceptions of workplace accessibility. The results imply that workplace accessibility is not solely a matter of physical architecture. Instead, a relational approach to workplace accessibility is proposed. What is considered inaccessible at one workplace might not be perceived as inaccessible by employers at other workplaces. Employers' perceptions of workplace accessibility are shown to be a contributing factor to the unequal treatment of applicants. The results also demonstrate an asymmetrical relation between employers and applicants using a wheelchair that seems to reduce the agency and adaptability of wheelchair users in the recruitment process. Points of Interest: Applicants who use a wheelchair receive approximately half the number of invitations for job interviews as applicants without impairments, even when the two applicants have similar skills. One explanation for the lower number of invitations sent to wheelchair users for job interviews relates to the physical access of workplaces. When employers receive applications for an open position and an applicant discloses that they are a wheelchair user, employers must decide whether a wheelchair user can access the building. This research divides employers into three groups, each of which have different understandings of what a wheelchair user can access. This understanding impacts who the employer invites for a job interview. I suggest that future research includes more information about what employers think a wheelchair user can access. The retail payments market is developing, and the implementation of digital payments has been one of the trends in consumer finance worldwide. This is the first study to jointly examine the perception of digital payment methods and financial services' role, for consumers with and without disabilities. First, based on a nationwide survey on Internet users in Poland, the authors compared the popularity of selected financial services among consumers, then the perception of characteristics of payment methods. The results revealed that consumers with disabilities use a wide range of payment services, and they are included in digital finance. Moreover, contactless payment cards are used by consumers with disabilities even more often than by consumers on average. The results suggest that the control over finances make digital payments an important empowering tool for consumers with disabilities. Finally, the paper provides recommendations for the banking sector, on strategies for offering digital financial services. Points of Interest: This paper examines the potential of new cashless payment methods as an empowering and assistive technologies for consumers with disabilities. The research found that consumers with disabilities use a wide range of payment services, and contactless payment cards are used by them even more often than by non-disabled people. Objective: This study aimed to explore the relationship between coping styles, social support and quality of life among disabled older adults and to examine the mediating role of coping styles in the relationship between social support and quality of life. Methods: Using a purposive sampling method, three investigators conducted a face‐to‐face questionnaire survey of eligible participants in the geriatric department of a tertiary care hospital in one of the largest cities in southern China between August 2021 and March 2022. A total of 187 questionnaires were collected, of which 176 were valid, with an effective response rate of 94.1%. Results: Social support and positive coping were positively related to disabled older adults' quality of life, while negative coping was negatively related to both social support and disabled older adults' quality of life. According to the mediating effect analysis after covariate adjustment, positive coping completely mediated the relationship between social support and older adults' quality of life (p < 0.01), with the mediating effect size accounting for 76.9% of the total effect. Negative coping had some mediating effect on the relationship between social support and older adults' quality of life (p < 0.01), with the mediating effect size accounting for 13.0% of the total effect. Conclusion: The quality of life of disabled older adults is low, which is closely related to their social support and coping styles. Therefore, it is important to recognize and emphasize the key role that social support systems play in improving the quality of life of this population, broaden their access to social support and guide them to adopt positive coping styles. Introduction: Participation in occupations is considered essential for individuals' health and wellbeing. Participation is a multidimensional construct that encompasses objective and subjective dimensions that transform over the course of life. Nonetheless, there is a lack of comprehensive measures that examine young adults' participation in age‐appropriate activities. Therefore, we developed the Young Adults' Daily Participation Scale (YADAPS) and aimed to explore its psychometric properties. Methods: In Study 1, the content validity of the YADAPS was established based on nine experts. Its internal consistency, criterion, convergent, and construct validity were explored among 115 typical young adults (21–35 years). Using a different sample, Study 2 examined YADAPS discriminant validity among 33 young adults with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) and 52 typical peers. Consumer and community involvement: No consumer and community involvement was included in these studies. Results: The relevance of YADAPS items was sufficient. Internal consistency was acceptable to excellent in most scales (.74 ≤ α ≤.89). Criterion validity was supported by correlations between the subjective participation scales and a wellbeing measure. Convergent validity was found for all scales. No gender effect was observed (p ≥.05). However, significant differences (p ≤.05) were found between individuals with and without DCD. Conclusions: The YADAPS appears to be a promising measure of objective and subjective dimensions of participation in young adults. The results support the importance of examining various participation dimensions, including occupational experience. Thus, it may be used for clinical purposes among young adults as well as for occupational science research, to broaden our understanding on the interplay between participation dimensions in various life situations in young adulthood. However, further research is needed on psychometric properties, the most suited scoring method, and to consolidate their robustness among diverse populations of young adults. Introduction: Home automation can deliver important outcomes for people with disabilities, including enhanced independence. Despite the millions of dollars spent on home automation in Australia and other developed nations, to date, there has been no economic evaluation of this type of assistive technology. Method: A social return on investment analysis of home automation study was undertaken. Primary data were collected using qualitative interviews with home automation consumers and other key stakeholders, including occupational therapists, a spinal rehabilitation physician, peer support advocate, and managers and technical personnel from home automation providers (n = 17). The analysis was supported by (1) secondary data from a scoping review on outcomes from home automation and (2) additional literature searches to identify suitable financial proxies and to make estimates of the proportion of home automation users expected to experience each outcome. A scenario approach was used with three home automation scenarios developed with increasing complexity and costs to calculate the social return on investment. Results: Eight outcomes from the use of home automation were identified, including reduced reliance on carers and family members, increased independence, and improved energy and comfort. The social return on investment ranged from $38.80 (low cost) to $15.10 (high cost) for every $1 invested across a 10‐year benefit period, with the financial proxy for reduced care attendant hours contributing the most to the social return ratio. Even the highest cost scenario was repaid in social value within the first year of the benefit period. Conclusion: This study suggests that home automation represents a sound investment and has a significant impact on the overall quality of life of people with disabilities. Focusing on the financial savings in care attendant hours alone should be compelling evidence for funders to recognise home automation's value and continue to fund this assistive technology. Consumer and Community Involvement: A consumer representative was a member of the project steering group, which supported the research team at all stages of the project. Plain Language Summary: When people get injured, their disability can stop them doing things around the home that they used to be able to do. Technology can help people with disabilities do things like open and close doors and turn off taps by pressing a button, so they do not have to wait for someone to help them. This technology can be expensive, but no one has looked at if it is worth the money. We spoke to some people with disabilities who used this type of technology, and they told us their lives were better now they used this technology. For example, they told us they were able to do things for themselves, they did not need carers as much, and they had better mental health. We spoke to businesses about the costs of different types of technology that can be used in the home. We then put a dollar value on the ways people with disabilities told us their lives were better. For example, for better mental health, we worked out how much it would cost to see a psychologist for 1 year. We found that the dollar value of the ways in which people with disabilities' lives were improved was at least 15 times more than the costs of the technology. Purpose: People with acquired neurological disability have the right to quality disability support, yet there is still limited user insights shaping disability services. This research aimed to develop a comprehensive understanding of quality support for adults with acquired neurological disability based on lived experiences. Methods: Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, this project engaged 12 adults with acquired neurological disability, 12 support workers, and 10 close others in individual interviews. Each perspective was analysed independently and subsequently merged to construct a holistic model of quality support grounded in lived experience. Results: The model of quality support encompasses interconnected themes spanning dyadic relationships, support worker competency, team dynamics, provider practices, and sector-wide considerations. Key elements include recognising the individual's expertise in their support needs, nurturing effective support relationships, fostering a capable support team, and upholding sector accountability. Authentic choice and personal agency emerged as paramount factors in achieving quality support. Conclusions: The findings align with disability rights and individualised funding principles, emphasising the centrality of people with lived experience in shaping support services. The research underscores the need to prioritise authentic choice and individual empowerment, offering valuable insights for both practice and policy development in the disability support sector. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: The perspective of people with lived experience is paramount to designing quality disability support services aligned with people's needs and preferences. The person with disability needs to be at the centre of all decisions regarding their support and needs to be supported to lead their supports. Quality disability support relies primarily on the interaction between the person with disability and their support worker, and therefore quality support relationships need to be developed and maintained. Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of different types of acupuncture in reducing pain, improving maximum mouth opening and jaw functions in adults with orofacial pain. Methods: Six databases were searched until 15 June 2023. The Cochrane risk of bias tool and GRADE were employed to evaluate bias and overall evidence certainty. Results: Among 52 studies, 86.5% (n = 45) exhibited high risk of bias. Common acupoints, including Hegu LI 4, Jiache ST 6, and Xiaguan ST 7, were used primarily for patients with temporomandibular disorder [TMDs]. Meta-analyses indicated that acupuncture significantly reduced pain intensity in individuals with myogenous TMD (MD = 26.02 mm, I2=89%, p = 0.05), reduced tenderness in the medial pterygoid muscle (standardised mean differences [SMD] = 1.72, I2 = 0%, p < 0.00001) and jaw dysfunction (SMD = 1.62, I2 = 88%, p = 0.010) in mixed TMD when compared to sham/no treatment. However, the overall certainty of the evidence was very low for all outcomes as evaluated by GRADE. Conclusion: The overall results in this review should be interpreted with caution as there was a high risk of bias across the majority of randomized controlled trial (RCTs), and the overall certainty of the evidence was very low. Therefore, future studies with high-quality RCTs are warranted evaluating the use of acupuncture in patients with orofacial pain. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: Acupuncture could potentially reduce subjective pain intensity and sensitivity of masticatory muscles, improve mouth opening, and reduce dysfunction in orofacial pain, specifically in patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Acupuncture points such as LI4, ST6, ST7, GB20, SI19, ST36 were the most commonly used acupuncture points to treat patients with orofacial pain, especially TMDs. Aim: This study aimed to understand Indonesian nurses' familiarity with the concept of reasonable adjustments, and the frequency of its application within their practice. Background: People with intellectual disability and/or autism are exposed to significant barriers when accessing healthcare and have poorer health outcomes than those without developmental disabilities. Reasonable adjustments can improve accessibility and quality of healthcare for people with disabilities and involves adapting practices and environments to promote equitable healthcare. Introduction: There is a scarcity of literature focused on the application of reasonable adjustments in the Indonesian nursing context. A greater understanding of the application of reasonable adjustments in this context can help inform nursing curricula and policy. Methods: A cross‐sectional, descriptive survey ‐was undertaken and is reported in accordance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Evaluations and Non‐randomised Designs. Following descriptive analysis, bivariate analyses were undertaken between key demographic, workplace, and self‐reported capability variables, and familiarity and implementation of reasonable adjustments. Results: The majority of respondents were not familiar with the concept of reasonable adjustments and self‐reported sometimes applying it within their practice. Higher levels of educational and clinical exposure to intellectual disability and/or autism, and self‐capability variables, were significantly associated with familiarity with reasonable adjustments and their application. Conclusions: An increase in nursing curricula focused on caring for people with intellectual disability and/or autism, including content focused on applying reasonable adjustments, is indicated. Implications for nursing policy: Given that, internationally, people with intellectual disability and/or autism have disproportionately negative health outcomes and experiences, findings highlighting gaps in understanding and application of reasonable adjustments of Indonesian nurses have substantial implications for nursing policy and curriculum. Purpose: To explore brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI)-affected adults' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) experiences informed by the theoretical framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health. Methods: This study applied a qualitative collective case study design. Twelve participants who participated in a prior survey study were recruited using maximum variation sampling. One-on-one semi-structured interviews focused on gaining in-depth understanding of participants' experiences with HRQoL. Interviews were recorded verbatim and thematically analysed. Results: We identified two themes. First, the theme biopsychosocial dimensions of the experience comprised the ways BPBI affects physical and emotional health and how BPBI is intertwined with affected individuals' identities, activities/participation, and social environments. Second, the theme lifelong and variable experience encompassed how BPBI is a chronic condition that changes over time and varies among affected individuals. The cross-case analysis derived a conceptual model of BPBI HRQoL to describe the BPBI experience through the lifespan. In this model, multiple dimensions of BPBI HRQoL expand through the lifespan while BPBI-specific health resources' availability contract. Conclusions: By providing insight into the many ways that BPBI affects and is affected by an individual's functioning and personal, social, and healthcare environmental factors, these findings underscore lifelong individualized care for BPBI-affected persons is needed. Purpose: This study comprehensively examines the disability acceptance experience of individuals who become disabled following accidents in the military after enlistment. Methods: In-depth interviews and participative observation of two soldiers with disabilities are conducted. Data sources encompass the transcripts from these interviews, relevant news videos, and articles on the participants. A qualitative case study approach is applied to conduct both "within-case" and "cross-case" analyses. Results: Although the two participants survived a crippling accidents, their military units did not actively attempt to resolve the accident. They grappled with despair and found it challenging to accept their new status as individuals with disability. Over time, they noticed changes in their personal relationships and started considering themselves burdens on their caregivers. However, despite encountering psychological challenges, which were marked by repeated setbacks and disappointments, the soldiers consistently made determined efforts to realize their objectives. Moreover, they strove to lead purposeful lives despite suffering the adversities caused by their disabilities. Conclusions: This study is the first in-depth examination of the disability acceptance experiences of soldiers with disability. Analyze the burden of diseases attributable to risk factors (RF) in Brazil according to age, sex, and Brazilian states between 1990 and 2021. This study used data from the Global Burden of Disease study 1990 to 2021. The metrics used in this analysis included: mortality rates, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and Summary Exposure Value (SEV). A ranking of the risk factors was created by highlighting the changes between 1990 and 2021, according to sex, age group, and Brazilian state. RF were analyzed according to the Socio-Demographic Index (SDI). Decline the risk factors of tobacco (−50.2 %), environmental: water, sanitation and hand washing (−58.0 %), and air pollution (−45.0 %), as well as an increase in the burden attributable to BMI (+78.4 %), alcohol consumption (+15.7 %). High systolic blood pressure ranked first in all states in 2021, followed by high blood glucose; tobacco ranking third in most states. The burden of diseases attributable to RFs in Brazil varied considerably between men and women, age groups, and states. Trends in the period from 1990 to 2021 showed a strong correlation with the SDI, better results being observed in states with higher SDI. High blood pressure, high BMI and tobacco are the main risk factors for mortality and DALYs in 2021. The burden of disease has a high correlation with socio-economic indicator (SDI). Disability is a complex concept, and generally refers to a situation where the carrying out of daily routines and social interactions is made more difficult for people. Despite research suggesting an increase in disability worldwide, there are few studies that afford a longitudinal perspective, with most focused exclusively on older populations. This study takes a generational perspective with the aim of analyzing the trend of disability in Spain Age-period-cohort analysis. To address a gap in the existing research, this study carries out an Age-Period-Cohort analysis to examine disability time-trends in Spain by sex, using data from various cross-sectional surveys conducted in 1999 (n = 218,185), 2008 (n = 258,187), and 2020 (n = 164,254). The results of this study contribute to knowledge of disability time-trends, and provide overall-population scope and sex differentials. While age was found to be the primary factor in an increase in disability, this study afforded insight into a decline in disability over period , observed after removing the age effect. Further, after controlling for age and period, significant differences in the prevalence of disability by cohort were observed. Differences by sex were found, with differing patterns of disability observed for female and male cohorts. This study also found an increase in the prevalence of disability in the youngest cohort, despite a general decrease in disability for generations born after 1960. Between generational cohorts, there are differing patterns for the prevalence of disability which cannot be explained by age, or by the period through which the cohort has lived. To estimate the burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lower respiratory tract infections (LRIs) stratified by geographic location, and social-demographic status for 21 regions across the world from 1990 to 2019. The analysis utilized data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study, focusing on mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) as measures of COPD and LRI burden. Trend analyses using the Joinpoint model were conducted across five socio-demographic index (SDI) quintiles. We investigated the burden of COPD and LRIs employing restricted cubic splines to flexibly identify relationships between DALY rates and SDI. This method allowed for detailed examination of trends over time across different regions and socio-demographic contexts. From 1990 to 2019, the ASMR of COPD attributed to PM for global and five SDI quintiles decreased 61.80 %, 53.41 %, 63.04 %, 63.00 %, 40.98 %, 12.14 % respectively. In terms of PM Pollution, there was an inverted U-shaped association between the DALY and SDI for COPD, the DALY rate associated with LRIs due to PM pollution exhibited a progressive decline as SDI increased. Even though the trend in mortality and DALY of COPD and LRIs decreased globally, the COPD and LRI burden attributed to PM pollution remains high, particularly in lower SDI quintiles. This study aims to comprehensively assess how dietary risk factors have influenced the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in China from 1990 to 2021. The study seeks to provide robust data and scientific evidence essential for formulating effective preventive and control strategies to combat T2DM in China. This cross-sectional study conducted secondary analyses using data from the Global Burden of Disease 2021 (GBD 2021) to assess the burden of T2DM in China attributable to dietary risks. The study analyzed age-adjusted metrics related to T2DM, including death counts, Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), and Age-Standardized Rates (ASRs), using GBD 2021 data, stratified by age and sex. Additionally, Estimated Annual Percentage Changes (EAPCs) were employed to track trends over time. In 2021, the results show that 21.43 % of T2DM-related deaths and 23.51 % of DALYs were attributable to dietary risk factors, notably a diet low in whole grains and high in red and processed meats. Over the period from 1990 to 2021, there has been an increasing trend in the EAPCs of death rates and DALYs associated with dietary risks in China, suggesting a substantial impact of dietary factors on the burden of T2DM in the country. In this study, the trends and current situation of the injury burden as well as attributable burden to injury risk factors at global, regional, and national levels based on the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 are presented. To assess the attributable burden of injury risk factors, the data of interest on data sources were retrieved from the Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx) and analyzed. Cause-specific death from injuries was estimated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model in the GBD 2019. The burden attributable to each injury risk factor was incorporated in the population attributable fraction to estimate the total attributable deaths and disability-adjusted life years. The Socio-demographic Index (SDI) was used to evaluate countries' developmental status. Globally, there were 713.9 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI]: 663.8 to 766.9) injuries incidence and 4.3 million (UI: 3.9 to 4.6) deaths caused by injuries in 2019. There was an inverse relationship between age-standardized disability-adjusted life year rate and SDI quintiles in 2019. Overall, low bone mineral density was the leading risk factor of injury deaths in 2019, with a contribution of 10.5% (UI: 9.0 to 11.6) of total injuries and age-standardized deaths, followed by occupational risks (7.0% [UI: 6.3–7.9]) and alcohol use (6.8% [UI: 5.2 to 8.5]). Various risks were responsible for the imposed burden of injuries. One criticism of medical aid in dying (MAID) is the expressivist objection: MAID is morally wrong because it expresses judgments about disabilities or persons with disabilities, that are offensive, disrespectful, or discriminatory. The expressivist objection can be made at the level of individual patients, medical providers, or the state. The expressivist objection originated with selective abortion, and responses to it in that context typically claim either that selective abortion does not express specific judgments about disabilities, or that any judgments expressed are not offensive. This response is inadequate: MAID often does express negative judgments about disabilities, which could reasonably be seen as offensive. But, does this offensiveness make MAID wrong? Drawing on Joel Feinberg's account of offense, I argue that it is unlikely that the offensiveness of the judgments expressed by individuals who seek MAID or through the state's legalization of MAID is enough to make it morally impermissible. Intellectual functioning impacts defendants' competence to stand trial, though research on this population remains limited. This study replicated and advanced prior work, focusing on defendants' demographic, clinical, cognitive, and criminal justice variables and their association with length of hospitalization and restoration determinations. Participants were 74 male and female criminal defendants in a midwestern state who were adjudicated incompetent to stand trial, had a diagnosis related to intellectual deficits, and completed competency restoration. Most defendants (83.7%) were restored to competency. Demographic factors were unrelated to restoration outcomes; violence of alleged offense predicted shorter hospitalization. Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve analyses determined an IQ score cut-off of 63.5 for which participants were of greater likelihood to be determined restored, providing guidance on the likelihood of restoration for defendants with intellectual disability related diagnoses. Frailty is a health concern for many adults with intellectual disability and should be measured to detect at-risk conditions, monitor disease, plan treatment, and gauge mortality. This descriptive pilot study evaluated measurement consistency (inter-rater agreement) of the Intellectual Disability-Frailty Index Short Form among multiple assessors with 20 adults (M age = 48.3 years) who had intellectual and multiple disabilities. Agreement percentages were computed for (a) non-frail, pre-frail, and frail categories derived from total index scores, and (b) each of 17 deficits listed on the form. Low average inter-rater agreement (<85%) was obtained on the index frail categories, several of the assessed deficits had acceptable inter-rater agreement (84.2-100%), while the majority of deficits were associated with moderate-to-low agreement percentages. Though research supports the Intellectual Disability-Frailty Index Short Form as a valid and practical frailty assessment instrument, our findings suggest that full-scale inter-rater agreement must be improved by adding more specificity to the form, clarifying instructions for assessors, and providing competency-based training in assessment implementation.
