HoCo 2 exhibits a giant magnetocaloric (MC) effect at its first-order magnetostructural phase transition around 77 K, and understanding the thermodynamic nature of this transition in response to external magnetic fields is crucial for its MC applications. In this study, we present a comprehensive investigation of specific heat and magnetization measurements of HoCo 2 under varying magnetic fields. The specific heat measurements qualitatively indicate a transformation from first- to second-order behavior of this phase transition at higher magnetic fields. However, analysis of the power-law dependence of the magnetic entropy change (Δ S M ∝ H n) and the breakdown of universal behavior in the temperature dependence of Δ S M suggest that the first-order nature remains intact, even up to 7 T. We investigated the effects of CoFeSiB soft magnetic layer thickness and annealing process on the magnetic field sensing and low-frequency 1/f noise characteristics of tunnel magnetoresistive (TMR) sensors. A thicker CoFeSiB layer improved the soft magnetic properties of the free layer, and the process order of device fabrication and annealing significantly influenced the 1/f noise characteristics of the TMR sensors. A magnetic field detectivity of 0.8 nT/Hz0.5 at 10 Hz was achieved in a single device TMR sensor annealed after device fabrication, which suppressed both electrical and magnetic 1/f noises compared to the annealing performed before device fabrication. The spectral density of the 1/f noise voltage scaled linearly with the sensitivity of the sensor; thus, detectivity showed an approximately constant value regardless of the change in sensitivity. Microdroplets play an important role in lab-on-a-chip systems for biological investigations, particularly in single-cell analysis. In this study, we propose an array-based magnetophoretic platform for precisely manipulating water microdroplets encapsulating magnetic particles. The dynamical behaviors of magnetic droplets moving along the periphery of single magnetic disks in a surrounding oil phase while exposed to an external rotating magnetic field are investigated experimentally and numerically. Based on the driving frequencies of the magnetic field, three motion regimes of phase-locked, phase-slipping, and phase-insulated are identified, with two critical frequency thresholds distinguishing them. The increased magnetic field strength and volume of the encapsulated magnetic particles enhance the magnetic force on the droplet, resulting in a critical frequency rise. However, adding to the quantity of particles simultaneously raises the inertia of the droplet, causing it to slow down and effectively change the trajectory patterns of the droplet. Employing larger droplets increases the inertia, and also the drag force due to greater contact surface with the surrounding oil, resulting in a reduction in critical frequency. The findings provide essential knowledge for using droplets in magnetophoretic circuits to enable precise transport of bioparticles, which have significant applications in modern biology. Magneto-optical gyrotropic Faraday and Kerr effects are studied in the BiY2Fe5O12 films with thicknesses ranging from 16 to 55 nm, in the wavelength range of 295 nm < λ < 830 nm (4.2–1.5 eV), and under magnetic fields of up to 1.2 T. It is shown that films produced by ac magnetron sputtering on the single-crystalline diamagnetic yttrium aluminum garnet substrates Y3Al5O12 (001) exhibit high structural and magneto-optical quality. The Verdet constant for diamagnetic Y3Al5O12 is determined, and the magnitude of the Kerr effect is estimated for the polished substrate. It is shown experimentally that for a substrate with diffusely reflective backside, the Kerr effect is about zero, except in the high-energy region. For all BiY2Fe5O12 films investigated, in the saturating magnetic fields of approximately 0.16–0.2 T, the value of specific Faraday rotation reaches 20 deg/μm (200 000 deg/cm), while the value of the Kerr effect reaches approximately 20 min (5.8 mrad). The critical thickness of the film–substrate interface was estimated, highlighting variations in the Kerr effect spectra associated with a decrease in the Bi content in thin films with the thicknesses of below 27 nm. The magnetoelectric coupling effect demonstrated immense potential for miniaturizing antenna applications. However, due to the resonant nature of magnetoelectric (ME) antennas, their bandwidth tended to be relatively narrow. To address this limitation, our study introduced an array design based on coupled ME antennas. A tri-layer FeGa–PZT8–FeGa laminate structure was employed to construct the ME antennas, which utilized inter-array coupling to broaden the frequency range. Both the central frequency and sensitivity of the array structure were theoretically analyzed, and two methods for extending the frequency were proposed. By coupling two ME antennas of similar frequency in the series mode, the arrayed ME antennas exhibited enhanced sensitivity, increasing from 0.225 and 0.247 to 0.413 mV/nT, and an expanded bandwidth from 0.92–1.03 to 1.4 kHz, indicating improved performance through combined configuration. On the other hand, by coupling two ME antennas of different frequencies together in the series mode, a dual-frequency (97.8/98.97 kHz) ME antenna array was formed. The communication capabilities of the ME antenna array under weak magnetic fields were demonstrated using amplitude shift keying and frequency shift keying modulation methods. The designed array of ME antennas elevated low-frequency communication performance and possessed excellent magnetic field detection capabilities, thereby offering a cost-effective technological pathway for bioelectronic and marine communication design. We propose semi-analytical models to compute alternating current (AC) power loss in a stack of N high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−x (or Y–Ba–Cu–O) tapes subjected to a time-varying magnetic field perpendicular to the tapes with zero transport current. The models take into account screening of the interior superconducting tapes of the stack from the external magnetic field. We validate the results by experiments carried out at temperature T = 77.2 K under an applied magnetic field with the amplitude of its induction B ext = 0.57 T and frequencies up to 110 Hz. As follows from our models, the AC loss per tape in stacks of N tapes decreases with N in agreement with experiments. The approach is extended to compute the AC loss for lower temperatures, larger magnetic fields strengths, and for frequencies up to several kHz. Tunable self-assembly driven by external electric or magnetic fields is of significant interest in modern soft matter physics. While extensively studied in two-dimensional systems, it remains insufficiently explored in three-dimensional systems. In this study, we investigated the formation of vertical strings from an initial monolayer system of particles deposited on a horizontal substrate under the influence of an external magnetic field using experiments, computer simulations, and theoretical frameworks. We demonstrated that the main mechanism of string self-assembly is merging, driven by the interplay between gravity and induced tunable interparticle interactions. During this process, the system has to overcome a saddle point on the energy landscape, whose height increases with the string height. At a certain point, further self-assembly becomes kinetically blocked in a metastable state, far from equilibrium. This contrasts sharply with the typical scenario for tunable self-assembly in two dimensions, where the resulting structures usually correspond to the equilibrium state. Therefore, this finding opens up opportunities for more detailed control of three-dimensional tunable self-assembly by designing and tuning various potential barriers along the kinetic pathways. There is a growing interest in using pulsed high magnetic field as a controlling parameter of physical phenomena in various scientific disciplines, such as condensed matter physics, particle physics, plasma physics, chemistry, and biological studies. We devised a concise and portable pulsed magnetic field generator that produces a 40 T field with a pulse duration of 2 ms. It is assembled using only off-the-shelf components and a homemade coil that leverages small computers, Raspberry Pi, and Python codes. It allows for straightforward modification for general purposes. As working examples, we show representative applications in condensed matter experiments of magnetoresistance, magnetization, and magnetostriction measurements for graphite, NdNi 2 P 2 , and NdCo 2 P 2 , respectively, with the maximum magnetic field of 41 T and the lowest temperature of 4.2 K. In this work, we have studied the spin dynamics of a synthetic antiferromagnet (AFM)/heavy metal/ferromagnet double barrier magnetic tunnel junction in the presence of Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida (RKKY) interaction, interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (iDM) interaction, Néel field, and Spin–Orbit Coupling (SOC) with different Spin-Transfer Torque (STT). We employ the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert–Slonczewski equation to investigate the AFM dynamics of the proposed system. We found that the system exhibits a transition from regular to damped oscillations with the increase in strength of STT for systems with a weaker strength of iDM interaction than RKKY interaction while displaying sustained oscillations for systems having the same order of RKKY and iDM interactions. On the other hand, the systems with sufficiently strong iDM interaction strength exhibit self-similar but aperiodic patterns in the absence of the Néel field. In the presence of the Néel field, the RKKY interaction dominating systems exhibit chaotic oscillations for low STT but display sustained oscillations under moderate STT. Our results suggest that the decay time of oscillations can be controlled via SOC. The system can work as an oscillator for low SOC but displays non-linear characteristics with the rise in SOC for systems having weaker iDM interaction than RKKY interactions. In contrast, opposite characteristics are noticed for iDM interaction dominating systems. We found periodic oscillations under low external magnetic fields in RKKY interaction dominating systems. However, moderate fields are necessary for sustained oscillation in iDM interaction dominating systems. Moreover, the system exhibits saddle-node bifurcations and chaos under moderate Néel field and SOC with suitable RKKY and iDM interactions. Magnetic skyrmions and bimerons, characterized by their topological properties and low current-induced motion, are promising magnetic textures for spintronic (skyrmionic) applications. In this work, through atomistic simulations and micromagnetic analysis, we investigate the field-driven manipulation and conversion of skyrmions into bimerons. By applying an in-plane magnetic field, we observe a smooth transition from skyrmions to bimerons, evidencing the persistence of the soliton topology over a wide range of external magnetic fields. The magnetic state of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator can be read and manipulated in spintronics devices using bilayers of an AFM and a conducting layer, making it useful for spintronics devices. To date, research has focused on single crystals of AFMs, which enables the study of properties related to different crystallographic surfaces. However, combining single-crystal AFMs in spintronics devices may be problematic due to substrate selectivity and deposition conditions. In this work, we study the properties of polycrystalline Fe2O3 coupled with Pt as the conducting layer, asking how the magnetoresistive behavior differs in polycrystalline AFMs. We report on the angle dependent magnetoresistance and transverse magnetoresistance properties as a function of temperature and magnetic fields, comparing Fe2O3/Pt and Fe2O3/Cu/Pt thin films, in addition to magnetometry and structural characterization. The magnetoresistance signals do not depend on the thickness or volume behavior of the Fe2O3 layer, but rather the Fe2O3/Pt interface. Angle dependent magnetoresistance measurements show ferromagnetic-like behavior but with a non-standard effect of field, while transverse measurements show a sign change with temperature. This differs from effects reported for single-crystal Fe2O3 based bilayers. Interestingly, using transverse field measurements, we find that at low temperatures, the Fe2O3/Pt interface spins develop a glass-like relaxation of the magnetic signal, which undergoes freezing as the sample is further cooled. Magnetometers have received considerable attention in recent years. Magnetic components offer an alternative methodology to improve the sensitivity. Due to their exceedingly small structural dimensions, metasurfaces exhibit significant competitiveness in field modulation. A magnetic field concentration phenomenon of spheres at the nanoscale is presented in this paper. The sensitivity of a magnetometer is, therefore, improved through the enhanced static or quasistatic magnetic field by the nanosphere concentrator. Magnetic field redistribution due to the assistance of nanospheres is discussed in this paper using the finite element method. The numerical method is verified with classical analytical equations with a single sphere. The simulation results show that the magnetic field concentrates in the near field behind the nanosphere along the direction of the magnetic flux density. The radius, material or permeability exactly, and distribution are critical parameters to the concentration strength. The magnetic gain of a single nanosphere with typical positive permeability of the typical soft magnetic material reaches 3, and thus, the field along the magnetic flux direction concentrates. Furthermore, the amplification factor is more prominent with the nanosphere arrays compared to a single sphere with the same scale of size, and amplification improves with the sphere numbers and distributions in the array arrangement, which provides a novel approach for the designing of the magnetic flux concentrator being monolithically integrated with the magnetometer probe. Multifrequency resonances in the pulsed-optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectra of electron spins in ensemble nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamonds are investigated under strong radio frequency (RF) driving at a MHz frequency range and weak microwave driving at a GHz frequency range in a bias static magnetic field for quantum sensing applications. First, we demonstrate that the coherent destruction of tunneling, which leads to the disappearance of the main resonance peaks, can be utilized for precise calibration of the RF amplitude. Next, we clarify the condition for enhancing the sensitivity of a DC magnetic field under strong RF driving at the RF frequency that matches the split frequency due to the hyperfine interaction between 15 N nuclear spins and the NV electron spins. Our findings indicate that strong RF driving increases the sensitivity of the DC magnetic field by enhancing the ODMR contrast and reducing the linewidth. The above results contribute to certifying the quantitative accuracy of RF imaging and enhancing the sensitivity of the DC magnetic field imaging using ensemble NV centers in diamonds. We study experimentally and theoretically the dynamics of permanent paramagnetic chains and mixed clusters formed by permanent paramagnetic chains and paramagnetic particles under the influence of a time-varying magnetic field. First, we examine the dynamics of permanent chains at high frequencies (∼50 to 1000 Hz). These permanent chains exhibit continuous rotational motion with a frequency several orders of magnitude lower than that of the magnetic field. We develop a theoretical model that accurately describes the dependence of the rotational dynamics of chains on their length, as well as the amplitude and frequency of the external magnetic field in this high frequency regime. Next, we examine how cluster dynamics are affected by the presence of permanent chains. We show that the rotation of clusters composed of a high proportion of permanent chains is slowed down but remains qualitatively well described by the theoretical model we developed for homogeneous clusters of isotropic particles. We propose that the decrease in angular velocity for mixed clusters is due to the hardening of the cluster's 2D elastic modulus caused by the increase of the steric interaction parameter stemming from the presence of chemical links between particles in the chains. High critical current (Ic) in high magnetic fields (B) with minimal variations with respect to the orientation of the B field is demanded by many applications such as high-field magnets for fusion systems. Motivated by this, this work studies 6 vol. % BaZrO3/YBa2Cu3O7 (BZO/YBCO) multilayer nanocomposite films by stacking two 10 nm thick Ca0.3Y0.7Ba2Cu3O7 (CaY-123) spacers with three BZO/YBCO layers of thickness varied from 50 to 330 nm to make the total film thickness of 150–1000 nm. The Ca diffusion from the spacers into BZO/YBCO was shown to dramatically enhance pinning efficiency of c-axis aligned BZO nanorods, which yields high and almost thickness independent critical current density (Jc) in the BZO/YBCO multilayer nanocomposite films. Remarkably, enhanced Jc was observed in these multilayer samples at a wide temperature range of 20–80 K and magnetic fields up to 9.0 T. In particular, the thicker BZO/YBCO multilayer films outperform their thinner counterparts in both higher value and less anisotropy of Jc at lower temperatures and higher fields. At 20 K and 9.0 T, Ic is up to 654 A/cm-width at B//c in the 6% multilayer (1000 nm) sample, which is close to 753 A/cm-width at B//ab due to the intrinsic pinning. This result illustrates the critical role of the Ca cation diffusion into the YBCO lattice in achieving high and isotropic pinning in thick BZO/YBCO multilayer films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We demonstrate a sensitive optically pumped magnetometer using rubidium vapor and 0.75 amg of nitrogen buffer gas in a sub-mm-width sensing channel excavated by femtosecond laser writing followed by chemical etching. The channel is buried less than 1 mm below the surface of its fused silica host material, which also includes reservoir chambers and micro-strainer connections, to preserve a clean optical environment. Using a zero-field-resonance magnetometry strategy and a sensing volume of 2.25 mm 3 , we demonstrate a sensitivity of ≈ 1 pT / Hz at 10 Hz. The device can be integrated with photonic structures and microfluidic channels with 3D versatility. Its sensitivity, bandwidth, and stand-off distance will enable detection of localized fields from magnetic nanoparticles and μ L NMR samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The phenomenon of Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) phase fluctuations and the superconducting fluctuations is investigated in a 40 nm thick granular aluminum film using magneto-transport measurements. The transport measurements suggest the possibility of strong electron–phonon (el–ph) interactions in contrast to a Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer superconductor. It shows a BKT transition of 2.304 K and a superconducting mean-field transition at 2.32 K. The presence of the resistive tail even before the BKT transition reflects the abundance of thermally activated free vortices. By analyzing the excess conductivity, Gaussian–Ginzburg–Landau superconducting fluctuations are observed above the superconducting transition, which causes rounding of the transition region even before the superconducting transition. The temperature dependence of the fluctuation conductivity in zero magnetic field exhibits distinct signatures of the two-dimensional direct Aslamazov–Larkin theory, with a significant contribution from the Maki–Thompson (MT) model. Furthermore, the anomalous behavior of the fluctuation conductivity at higher temperatures and perpendicular magnetic fields (up to 700 mT) is explained in terms of the total-energy cutoff (=0.72) in the low-wavelength region of the superconducting fluctuations and a pair-breaking parameter (∼0.031). Further studies on the pair-breaking parameter indicate the presence of the el–ph scattering, which diminishes the MT contribution. Our study carries important bearings on how the BKT phase fluctuations and superconducting amplitude fluctuations control the conductivity of granular superconductor near and above the transition region as non-equilibrium properties of weakly disordered granular superconductors. This research is of significance, offering insights into the fundamental properties of granular superconductivity and aiding in the comprehension of nano-structured thin film devices. The study of the behavior of magnetic skyrmions in local magnetic fields' nanometric length-scale has gained increasing interest in recent years due to the theoretical proposal of magnetic skyrmion–superconducting vortex pairs as potential hosts for topologically protected bound states, which hold high promise for applications in quantum computing. From a magnetic interaction point-of-view, the key interest lies in understanding the skyrmion dynamics triggered by the magnetic energy landscape generated by the superconducting vortex. Here, we present a micromagnetic study of the dynamics of nanometric skyrmions inside a Gaussian magnetic field profile, which is used as a simplified version of the vortex magnetic flux. On the one hand, our calculations show that local non-linear magnetic fields can be very effective in controlling the dynamics of magnetic skyrmions; in particular, they offer the appealing possibility to manipulate skyrmions in a two dimensional space. On the other hand, they also show that the dynamics of a skyrmion in a local magnetic field can be manipulated via a uniform external magnetic field without any change in the magnetic field gradient. An analytical expression for the skyrmion velocity is given, and the corresponding microscopic dynamics are confirmed by the micromagnetic simulations. The influence of shape, orientation, and motion patterns of magnetic domains in nanocrystalline strips with a high Ni content on soft magnetic properties was studied using normal isothermal annealing and transverse magnetic field annealing (TFA). The results indicate that TFA-10 (with 10 at. % Ni) exhibits the lowest coercivity (Hc) at 0.33 A/m and a remanence ratio (Br/Bm) of 0.2%. Moreover, more stringent conditions for the anisotropy field (Hk) are applied, and the resistance to current bias is assessed by examining the relationship between the field-induced magnetic anisotropy (Ku) and the current magnitude. A highly linear hysteresis loop with an anisotropy field (Hk) of 210 A/m was achieved, resulting in an effective permeability (μe) of 5000 at 500 kHz and 0.5 V. Furthermore, the current required to maintain a 100% bias ratio is determined to be up to 12 A. This study demonstrates the excellent soft magnetic properties of TFA-10 and guides optimizing the constant permeability properties of nanocrystalline alloys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The impact of high-temperature annealing on the magnetic and microstructural properties of MnFePSi glass-coated microwires is studied. A comparative analysis is conducted to elucidate the influence of annealing conditions (temperature and time) on physical characteristics MnFePSi glass-coated microwires compared to the as-prepared sample. The results reveal a significant influence of the annealing process on MnFePSi-based glass-coated microwires. A notable observation is the increased coercivity (Hc) for the sample annealed at 973 K for 1 h, rising from 761 Oe (as-prepared) to 1200 Oe. However, increasing the annealing time to 2 h leads to a sharp reduction in the coercivity value to 253 Oe. Thermomagnetic curves [field-cooling (FC) and field-heating (FH)] of the annealed samples, measured at both low and high magnetic fields, exhibit perfect matching. This indicates that the relevant contribution of the internal stresses induced by glass coating in the magnetic behavior in both FC and FH protocols. We demonstrate the possibility for tailoring and modification of relevant magnetic phenomena such as metamagnetic phase transition, magnetic behavior, and the control of magnetic response (hardness/softness). These tailored properties pave the way for the exploitation of MnFePSi glass-coated microwire in a wide range of glass-coated microwire applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antiferromagnetic skyrmions are tiny particle like spin textures, topologically more stable, having low depinning current density. They are potential candidate for spintronics devices owing to their robustness toward external magnetic field perturbations. Precise control of the skyrmion motion is essential for applications such as racetrack memories, multistate memories, and neuromorphic computing devices. However, in conventional nanotracks, these particles could not be stabilized due to inter-skyrmion repulsion. Hence, in the case of domain wall-based racetracks and multi-state memory devices, extra notches or similar geometric confinements are included within the nanotrack. Here, we show that a stepped nanotrack geometry is one possible solution for controlling the skyrmion dynamics that can be further employed in racetrack memory, multistate memory, and leaky integrate-and-fire neuron devices. Compared to the domain wall depinning current density of ∼1011–1012 A/m2, only ∼106 A/m2 is required for skyrmions. Additionally, we observe that the modified skyrmion racetracks with stepped geometry can mimic the functionality of the biological neuron, including the leaky behavior, eliminating the need for an anisotropy gradient, Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction gradient, or thermal gradient, which is required for the case of domain wall nanotrack. The current density required to drive the skyrmions on this modified nanotrack is ∼1010 A/m2. The effects of defects and edge roughness due to the fabrication process are also studied. Magnetically induced heterogeneous catalysis has been attracting attention due to its high energy efficiency and flexibility for dynamic reactor control. Iron wool is a commercial, low-cost, and versatile heating agent, which has been used in several magnetic catalysis studies, but its heating properties have never been investigated. Here, the properties of three types of Fe wool were studied using optical and electronic microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and measurements of both heating power and high-frequency hysteresis loops. The effects of strand width, packing, and magnetic field amplitude and frequency were studied. A maximum specific absorption rate (SAR) around 700 W/g under a rms field of 47.4 mT at 93 kHz was measured for the larger width Fe wool. High-frequency hysteresis loops were used to quantify the contribution of hysteresis losses and eddy currents to total heating. Eddy currents contribute 65%–90% to the global heating depending on the strand width. Coating the wool with SiO2 and Ni has negative effects on the SAR but none on hysteresis losses. It is interpreted as originating from the cut-off of inter-wire eddy currents due to the insulating (SiO2, oxidized Ni) nature of the coating. Last, it was found that adding more Fe wool in a given volume mostly decreases the SAR. This effect could be not only due to the absorption and/or screening of the field by surface strands but also due to magnetic interactions. Magnetic Johnson noise is an important consideration for many applications involving precision magnetometry, and its significance will only increase in the future with improvements in measurement sensitivity. The fluctuation–dissipation theorem can be utilized to derive analytic expressions for magnetic Johnson noise in certain situations, but when used in conjunction with finite element analysis tools, the combined approach is particularly powerful as it provides a practical means to calculate the magnetic Johnson noise arising from conductors of arbitrary geometry and permeability. In this paper, we demonstrate this method to be one of the most comprehensive approaches presently available to calculate thermal magnetic noise. In particular, its applicability is shown to not be limited to cases where the noise is evaluated at a point in space but also can be expanded to include cases where the magnetic field detector has a more general shape, such as a finite-size loop, a gradiometer, or a detector that consists of a polarized atomic species trapped in a volume. We study the magneto-optical properties of Dirac semimetal (DSM) slabs with particular emphasis on Cd 3 As 2 through electron–photon–phonon interactions, focusing on the magneto-optical absorption coefficient (MOAC) and full-width at half maximum (FWHM). Studying the Landau level (LL) energy of DSMs in the (x y) plane and the z -direction revealed a unique deviation from the square root dependence on the magnetic field, distinguishing DSMs from other semiconductors. At high magnetic fields, the electron–hole symmetry in the LL spectrum is broken, indicating a topological phase in DSMs. For undoped DSMs, MOAC is driven by interband transitions, with peaks from one-photon absorption being smaller and positioned to the left of two-photon ones. Increasing the magnetic field increases peak values. FWHM for one- and two-photon processes increases with the magnetic field and follows a T dependence on temperature. In doped DSMs, both intraband and interband transitions occur, with new interband peaks emerging at higher temperatures near the Fermi energy. Increased electron density shifts the peak position slightly toward higher energy. Peaks from optical phonon emission are consistently higher and located to the right of those from optical phonon absorption, indicating a stronger emission process. The FWHM data allow for the estimation of electron mobilities, and using a reasonable broadening parameter, our predicted mobility values agree with experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Generating and manipulating magnetic skyrmions at ultrafast time scales is essential for future skyrmion-based racetrack memory and logic gate applications. Using the atomistic spin dynamics simulations, we demonstrate the nucleation of ultra-small field-free magnetic skyrmions in amorphous GdFeCo at picosecond time scales by femtosecond laser heating. The ultrafast nature of laser heating and subsequent cooling from a high-temperature state is crucial for forming magnetic skyrmion. The magnon localization and magnon coalescence are the key driving mechanisms responsible for stabilizing the magnetic skyrmions at zero-field conditions. The polarization and, hence, the topological charge can be switched by exploiting the all-optical switching observed in GdFeCo. The skyrmion sizes and numbers can be controlled by varying pulse width and fluence of incident laser pulses. Applying an external magnetic field provides an additional degree of freedom to tune the skyrmion radius during the ultrafast optical creation of magnetic skyrmions. Our results provide a detailed understanding of the ultrafast creation of magnetic skyrmions using femtosecond laser pulses, a vital step in advancing next-generation skyrmion-based memory technologies. Motivated by the booming development of spintronics based on quantum dot systems, we employed the standard nonequilibrium Green's function theory to derive the transport formula and the heat generation formula of a quantum dot coupled to a substrate and study the relation between spin current and its accompanying heating or cooling. Our results demonstrate that (i) a thermal bias combined with Zeeman splitting can generate steady spin current in a limited dot level range, while a rotating magnetic field can generate time-average spin current in a global range and pure spin current can induce more heat generation than non-pure spin current; (ii) magnetic resonance of spin current can also effectively enhance heat generation; (iii) appropriate environmental temperature in conjunction with a thermal bias makes cooling, while increasing the frequency of the rotating magnetic can easily give rise to the transition from cooling to heating; and (iv) enhancing the coupling between quantum dots and substrates can effectively reduce heat generation while maintaining the fundamental properties of pure spin current. The B20 type chiral magnet FeGe exhibits the formation of skyrmion-lattice (SkL) phases in the vicinity of the magnetic ordering temperature. The SkL is a magnetic superlattice composed of vortex-type topological spin objects, and it has experimentally been known that its formation requires the existence of an intermediate (IM) phase between SkL and the paramagnetic (PM) phases. We take interest in how the crystal lattice experiences the formation of these topological spin texture. In this study, we observed the so-called spin–orbit coupling induced magnetostriction related to these topological spin texture formation, in addition to the ac magnetization anomalies. The temperature and magnetic field dependences of the lattice parameter reflected the transformation of phases, such as helimagnetic (HM), SkL, IM, conical (CM), and PM phases. In the PM region, a phase characterized as gaseous skyrmions was detected similarly to the case of the same B20 type MnSi. Furthermore, the HM, CM, and IM phases were also divided into two regions. Thus, the precise phase diagram near T c was reconstructed from the prospect of the magnetostriction such that we demonstrated that the stabilization of skyrmions needs a finite magnetic field. The advancement of next-generation magnetic devices depends on fast manipulating magnetic microstructures at the nanoscale. A universal method is presented for rapid and reliable generating, controlling, and driving nano-scale skyrmioniums, through high-throughput micromagnetic simulations. Ultrafast switches are realized between skyrmionium and skyrmion states and rapidly change their polarities in monolayer magnetic nanodisks by perpendicular magnetic fields. The transition mechanism by alternating magnetic fields differs from that under steady magnetic fields. New skyrmionic textures, such as flower-like and windmill-like skyrmions, are discovered. Moreover, this nanoscale skyrmionium can move rapidly and stably in nanoribbons using weaker spin-polarized currents. Explicit discussions are held regarding the physical mechanisms involved in ultrafast manipulations of skyrmioniums. This work provides further physical insights into the manipulation and application of topological skyrmionic structures for developing low-power consumption and nanostorage devices. Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) is long established as a powerful tool for probing the local stray fields of magnetic nanostructures across a range of temperatures and applied stimuli. A major drawback of the technique, however, is that the detection of stray fields emanating from a sample's surface rely on a uniaxial vertical cantilever oscillation, and thus are only sensitive to vertically oriented stray field components. The last two decades have shown an ever-increasing literature fascination for exotic topological windings where particular attention to in-plane magnetic moment rotation is highly valuable when identifying and understanding such systems. Here, we present a method of detecting in-plane magnetic stray field components, by utilizing a split-electrode excitation piezo that allows the simultaneous excitation of a cantilever at its fundamental flexural and torsional modes. This allows for the joint acquisition of traditional vertical mode images and a lateral MFM where the tip–cantilever system is only sensitive to stray fields acting perpendicular to the torsional axis of the cantilever. A highly sensitive terahertz stereo metasurface sensor, characterized by a high quality factor (Q-factor) and based on dual toroidal dipole (TD) resonance, has been proposed. The optimal structural parameters are ascertained by comparing the pertinent parameters of the stereo and planar structures in relation to TD modal excitation. The effective excitation of the TD mode is demonstrated using the calculations of multipole scattered power, reflection spectra, surface currents, electric fields, and magnetic field distributions. It is crucial that the stereo metasurface exhibits simplicity and that the dual TD resonance can be readily excited through simple adjustments in the distance and height of the intermediate gap. It also demonstrates exceptionally high sensitivity and Q-factor, both of which are essential for sensing applications. Moreover, the proposed stereo terahertz metasurface sensor still shows excellent sensing performance in a wide range of incidence angles (±40°), which is of great significance for practical applications. In this paper, we investigate the Feshbach resonances of high partial waves and the influence of spin–spin (S–S) interaction on ultracold scattering processes. Taking the N a 23 - R b 87 system as an example, we plot the variations of weakly bound state energy and elastic scattering cross section with magnetic field and with collision energy. We find that the number of splittings in high partial wave Feshbach resonances does not strictly conform to the expected l + 1 (l is rotational angular momentum), and the deviation is attributed to the influence of bound states in other channels coupled by S–S interaction. For different ml (the projection of l on the external magnetic field direction), the effects of S–S interaction lead to different scattering patterns in the incident channels. In the present work, we have investigated the structural response of transition metal double perovskite oxide Nd 2 CoFeO 6 under pressure by XRD and Raman spectroscopic measurements. From XRD data, we have observed a pressure-induced structural transition from the orthorhombic phase to the monoclinic phase at about 14.8 GPa. An anomalous increase in compressibility at a much lower pressure (∼ 1.1 GPa) is seen where no structural transition occurs. At about the same pressure, a sudden drop in the slope of the Raman shift is observed. Further investigation at low temperatures reveals that the B 1 g Raman mode is strongly affected by magnetic interactions. Additional high-pressure Raman experiments with the application of a magnetic field have indicated that the mentioned anomaly around 1.1 GPa can be explained by a high-spin to low-spin transition of Co 3 + . Two-dimensional spintronics has become a hot topic in recent years due to its advantages and potential in manipulating electron spins. In this paper, the electronic structures and magnetic properties of the Janus NbSSe monolayer are calculated using first-principles and Monte Carlo methods. Our study shows that the ground state of the material is a ferromagnetic metal. Under carrier doping, it undergoes a second-order phase transition from metal to half-metal, achieving 100% spin polarization, and enhancing or weakening ferromagnetic coupling. The value of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy is 570.96 μeV, and doping with an appropriate concentration of holes can transform the easy magnetization axis from in-plane to out-of-plane. Since the out-of-plane mirror symmetry is broken, we study the charge changes in the layer under the action of an external electric field. Due to the combined action of the external electric field and the built-in electric field, the layer exhibits a unique charge transfer mode. It is predicted that the Curie temperature of the material is about 156 K. When doped with 4.01 × 1013 cm−2 (0.04 holes per atom) concentration holes, the Curie temperature can reach about 350 K, indicating that the Curie temperature of the material can be reasonably controlled by regulating the carrier concentration. The coercive force calculated from the hysteresis loop is 0.01 T, and its hysteresis loss is low, showing its response to the external magnetic field. We have observed a transition from single to double hysteresis of nuclear spin polarization (NSP) with increasing magnetic field in a single InAlAs self-assembled quantum dot, which means the birth of a third stable branch that depends on the field strength. This NSP transition behavior could not be reproduced by standard model calculations using a fixed electron–nuclear spin correlation time τ c under different external field conditions. By introducing the field dependence of τ c , we were able to successfully reproduce the observed NSP transition. The Landau levels (LLs) and magneto-optical responses in the AA-stacked bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides in the presence of an exponentially decaying magnetic field are investigated. Sixteen separate Landau levels are predicted in the numerical results, which are the result of the spin, valley, and layer degeneracy lifting induced by the spin Zeeman field. Interestingly, we find that the ∇ B drift velocity perpendicular to the magnetic field gradient is τ ⋅ s -degenerate and independent of the layer index and the strength of the spin Zeeman field. Based on the linear-response theory, the magneto-optical conductivity is derived as a function of photon energy where only the intraband transition associated with the incident light in the THz regime is considered. Our result reveals that the merit of absorption peaks in the real part of longitudinal conductivity under the nonuniform magnetic field is influenced by the combined effect of the optical transition selection rule and the mixing rule of Landau states. Moreover, the response of optical conductivity is significantly modified when the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field, i.e., ξ 0 , is varied. Micromagnetic simulations are used to investigate the effect of an external magnetic field on the interaction between domain walls and linearly polarized propagating spin waves in synthetic antiferromagnets. Two regimes with a sharp transition between them are found. At large fields, spin waves are strongly reflected by the domain wall and, consequently, the latter is propelled forward. At low fields, however, there is no reflection and yet the domain wall undergoes a small forward displacement, which is attributed to the change in linear momentum of the magnons as they pass through the domain wall and to the imbalance in the population of the two oscillation modes present in the linearly polarized excitation. The conversion of the precession of the magnetization vector, excited by an alternating magnetic microwave field, into a constant voltage is realized using the inverse spin Hall effect in the hematite/heavy metal structure. Using a constant magnetic field up to 5 kOe, the resonant frequency of such a detector is tunable over a wide range up to 32 GHz with potential sensitivity reaching 10.1 μ V/W. Confirmation of the measurement of the spin current is the change in the sign of V sp when the polarity of the constant magnetic field alters. We believe that these studies will make a major contribution to the understanding of the physics of the spin-pumping effect from antiferromagnets and will also help in the development of devices for quantum technologies and next-generation communication technologies. Magnetic gels with embedded micro-/nano-sized magnetic particles in cross-linked polymer networks can be actuated by external magnetic fields, with changes in their internal microscopic structures and macroscopic mechanical properties. We investigate the responses of such magnetic gels to an external magnetic field, by means of coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the dynamics of magnetic particles are determined by the interplay of magnetic dipole–dipole interactions, polymer elasticity, and thermal fluctuations. The corresponding microscopic structures formed by the magnetic particles, such as elongated chains, can be controlled by the external magnetic field. Furthermore, the magnetic gels can exhibit reinforced macroscopic mechanical properties, where the elastic modulus increases algebraically with the magnetic moments of the particles in the form of ∝ (m − m c ) 2 when magnetic chains are formed. This simulation work can not only serve as a tool for studying the microscopic and the macroscopic responses of the magnetic gels, but also facilitate future fabrications and practical controls of magnetic composites with desired physical properties. Microwave (MW) transmission, absorption, and reflection loss spectra of the ferrimagnetic U-type hexaferrite Sr4CoZnFe36O60 ceramics were studied from 100 MHz to 35 GHz at temperatures between 10 and 390 K. Nine MW magnetic excitations with anomalous behavior near ferrimagnetic phase transitions were revealed. They also change under the application of the weak bias magnetic field (0–700 Oe) at room temperature. Six pure magnetic modes are assigned to dynamics of the magnetic domain walls and inhomogeneous magnetic structure of the ceramics, to the natural ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), and to the higher-frequency magnons. Three modes are considered the magnetodielectric ones with the dominating influence of the magnetic properties on their temperature and field dependences. The presence of the natural FMR in all ferrimagnetic phases proves the existence of the non-zero internal magnetization and magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Splitting of the FMR into two components without magnetic bias was observed in the collinear phase and is attributed to a change in the magnetocrystalline anisotropy during phase transition. The high-frequency FMR component critically slows down to phase transition. At room temperature, FMR splitting and essential suppression of the higher-frequency modes were revealed under the weak bias field (300–700 Oe). The highly nonlinear MW response and FMR splitting are caused by the gradual evolution of the polydomain magnetic structure to a monodomain one. The high number of magnetic excitations observed in the MW region confirms the suitability of using hexaferrite Sr4CoZnFe36O60 ceramics as MW absorbers, shielding materials and highly tunable filters. This paper describes the hydrodynamic behavior of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles modified with citric acid (CA-SPIONs) in suspension under alternating current magnetic fields given interparticle and inter-cluster dipole–dipole interactions. The cluster size of the CA-SPIONs is modulated to control interparticle interactions, and the ionic concentration of the CA-SPION suspension is varied to control inter-cluster interactions. Dynamic magnetic susceptibility (DMS) measurements of the CA-SPION suspensions under alternating current magnetic fields indicate that the interparticle interaction by clustering and the inter-cluster interaction by increasing the ionic concentration cause frequency spectra modulation, such as their broadening in the low-frequency region and a decrease in the Brownian relaxation frequency. The experimentally obtained DMS spectra differ from the spectra numerically calculated from the hydrodynamic size distribution of CA-SPIONs using the Debye relaxation model without considering the magnetic interactions; the differences are attributed to the interparticle and inter-cluster dipole–dipole interactions. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of dynamics of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and facilitate nanoparticle parameter optimization for tailored applications in the biomedical field, particularly for their efficacy and precision in liquid-phase biosensing and imaging. This article follows earlier studies on the physical origin of magnetic anisotropy and the means of controlling it in polynuclear transition metal complexes. The difficulties encountered when focusing a magnetic field on a molecular object have led to consider the electric field as a more appropriate control tool. It is therefore fundamental to understand what governs the sensitivity of magnetic properties to the application of an electric field. We have already studied the impact of the electric field on the isotropic exchange coupling and on the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI). Here, we focus on the symmetric exchange anisotropy tensor. In order to obtain significant values of anisotropic interactions, we have carried out this study on a model complex that exhibits first-order spin–orbit coupling. We will show that (i) large values of the axial parameter of symmetric exchange can be reached when close to the first-order spin–orbit coupling regime, (ii) both correlated energies and wave functions must be used to achieve accurate values of the symmetric tensor components when the DMI is non-zero, and (iii) finally, an interferential effect between the DMI and the axial parameter of symmetric exchange occurs for a certain orientation of the electric field, i.e., the latter decreases in magnitude as the former increases. While DMI is often invoked as being involved in magneto-electric coupling, isotropic exchange and the symmetrical anisotropic tensor also contribute. Finally, we provide a recipe for generating significant anisotropic interactions and a significant change in magnetic properties under an electric field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-performance and stable spintronic devices have garnered considerable attention in recent years. Based on first-principle and Monte Carlo calculations, we demonstrate that under reasonable carrier doping, H-VSe2 exhibits 100% spin polarization, a magnetic anisotropy energy of 581 μeV, a tunable easy-axis, and a Curie temperature of 330 K. Moreover, Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions in H-VSe2 and magnetic hysteresis loops are determined theoretically for the first time, which provides more precise and comprehensive descriptions of its magnetic properties under finite temperatures and external magnetic field. In this Tutorial, we overview recent developments to break and manipulate electromagnetic nonreciprocity in two-dimensional (2D) materials without relying on magnetic fields. To this purpose, we provide a general conductivity model to describe gyrotropic metasurfaces that exhibit nonreciprocity through different physical mechanisms enabled by 2D materials, including optical pumping, drifting electrons, ferromagnetic monolayers, mechanical strain, and spatiotemporal modulation. We describe in detail the resulting systems, focusing on near-field phenomena, associated to nonreciprocal bulk and edge surface plasmon propagation, and on far-field responses, related to Faraday/Kerr rotation and optical dichroism of waves propagating in free-space. Additionally, we review and contextualize recent advancements in magnet-free nonreciprocal devices based on 2D materials, ranging from Faraday rotators and optical dichrosim, to plasmonic and photonic isolators, hyperlenses, and tunable optical traps. We conclude by providing our outlook for the future development of this technology and its potential applications in areas such as communications, sensing, wave generation, and spectroscopy, among others. In the pursuit of advancing neuromorphic computing, our research presents a novel method for generating and precisely controlling intermediate states within heavy metal/ferromagnet systems. These states are engineered through the interplay of a strong in-plane magnetic field and an applied charge current. We provide a method for fine-tuning these states by introducing a small out-of-plane magnetic field, allowing for the modulation of the system's probabilistic response to varying current levels. We also demonstrate the implementation of a spiking neural network (SNN) with a tri-state spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) learning rule using our devices. Our research furthers the development of spintronics and informs neural system design. We examine structural and magnetic properties of a series of La–Fe–Si alloys in the region of concentrations where they naturally form two-phase LaFeSi–LaFe13−xSix composites with variable content and connectivity of LaFe13−xSix grains distributed within the LaFeSi matrix. Theoretical calculations confirm that the LaFeSi constituent is magnetically and structurally inert below room temperature and at pressures between −10 and 10 GPa. The LaFe13−xSix constituent, on the other hand, is magnetically and structurally active: it exhibits first-order magnetostructural transformations that, in addition to xSi, can be controlled with temperature, magnetic field, and pressure. In composites where the concentration of the inactive constituent is ∼70 wt. % or greater, the standard, single-step, LaFe13−xSix first-order phase transformation proceeds in two steps separated by over 30 K in a zero magnetic field. Increasing the magnetic field recouples the two steps and restores the single-step phase transformation pathway. We analyze the roles of stresses caused by both thermal expansion mismatch and the first-order magnetic phase transition in LaFe13−xSix to rationalize the observed physical behaviors that emerge as the temperature or/and magnetic field vary. Efficient integral screening techniques are essential for the investigation of extended molecular structures. This work presents a critical assessment of well-established approximate screening techniques and extends them for integrals over London atomic orbitals, which are required in the presence of strong, external magnetic fields. Through the examination of helium clusters in such extreme environments, we demonstrate that seemingly straightforward extensions of field-free screening techniques as proposed in the recent literature can lead to significant errors. Magnetocaloric materials, which exploit reversible temperature changes induced by magnetic field variations, are promising for advancing energy-efficient cooling technologies. The potential integration of two-dimensional materials into magnetocaloric systems represents an emerging opportunity to enhance the magnetocaloric cooling efficiency. In this study, we use atomistic spin dynamics simulations based on first-principles parameters to systematically evaluate how magnetocaloric properties transition from three-dimensional (3D) to two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials. We find that 2D features such as reduced Curie temperature, sharper magnetic transition, and higher magnetic susceptibility are beneficial for magnetocaloric applications, while the relatively higher lattice heat capacity in 2D can compromise achievable adiabatic temperature changes. We further propose GdSi 2 as a promising 2D magnetocaloric material. Our calculation predicts that GdSi 2 exhibits an isothermal entropy change Δ S M of 22.5 J kg − 1 K − 1 and an adiabatic temperature change Δ T a d of 6.2 K, near the hydrogen liquefaction temperature (T C ≈ 25 K). Our analysis offers valuable theoretical insights into the magnetocaloric effect in 2D ferromagnets and demonstrates that 2D ferromagnets hold promise for cooling and thermal management applications in compact and miniaturized nanodevices. A Conductor on Round Core (CORC) cable wound with a high-temperature superconductor is an important cable concept for high-current density applications. It is widely used in large power systems because of its advantages of good flexibility and high engineering current density. However, the complex design structure of CORC cable makes it very difficult to understand its electromagnetic properties (such as AC loss). In particular, the different winding directions of each layer in multi-layer cable have a great influence on its electromagnetic characteristics. In this paper, the H-method is used to solve the electromagnetism and mechanics equations. The influence of the winding direction of CORC cable on its electromagnetic field distribution characteristics, AC loss, and mechanical variation under the action of external magnetic field is investigated. The AC loss study of single-layer cable reveals that when the applied magnetic field is increased from 0.01 to 0.02 and 0.03 T, the AC loss peak of the cable increases by 107 and 103 orders of magnitude, respectively, indicating that the effect of low applied magnetic field on the AC loss of the cable is more significant. For multi-layer cables, cables with opposite winding directions have a greater depth of current density penetration than cables with the same winding direction. In addition, the mechanical variations of multi-layer cables with different winding orientations are explored. The results show that the Mises stress in the cable with the same winding direction is about 32% higher than that of the cable with the opposite winding direction, which indicates that the method of winding the cable in the opposite direction between adjacent layers of tape can avoid excessive mechanical stress.
