With limited library budgets and declining circulation of print books, it is important to demonstrate library value to multiple stakeholders and to make informed collection development choices. The aim of this one-year study was to gain a complete picture of print book circulation by identifying titles that were used in the library (“in-house”) but not checked out. We found that almost 30% of circulation transactions were books that were used in-house. Medical and nursing books showed the highest rate of in-house use in both the reference and main (circulating) collection. A close examination of these subject areas indicated that 46% of potentially circulating medical books used in-house were checked out, and 19% of science books used in house were checked out. This suggests that libraries should not assume that titles used in-house are subsequently checked out, or that check out statistics represent the totality of book use. We recommend including in-house use statistics to obtain an accurate picture of total circulation and library value, and to inform collection development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A hitherto unknown gothic book cover of cut leather (cuir-ciselé) has been identified as remains of former cod. 4 (rot) of the library of the Benedictine abbey of Göttweig (Lower Austria). It belongs to a group of cut-leather book covers with leaf ornaments, produced in the 15th century for monasteries in Styria, Upper and Lower Austria. This group is examined critically, and further book covers are ascribed to it. Unlike originally assumed, they were produced not just by one artist referred to as „Master of the Leaf Ornaments“ but by several „Masters of the Leaf Ornaments“. The interpretation of letters on a book cover from Melk as meaning „Martinus ligator“, thought to be the name of one of these masters, is disproved and the alleged Martinus must be eliminated from the list of only six known masters working with cut leather [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The East European History and Slavonic Studies Library of the Vienna University Library owns approximately 1.500 volumes of rare specialty books. These originate from two private collectors' libraries, which were bought by the seminar for Eastern European History at the beginning, of the 20th century: the library of Vasilji Alekseevic Bil'basov and the library of the polish noble family Jodko. One main focus of this work which developed from a project of the postgraduate university course Library and Information Studies 2010/11, was to review the bibliographic records for all these volumes, to identify missing records and to enrich the existing records with additional data. By way of local holdings, information on noteworthy features, e.g. binding design, indicators of provenance, special characteristics like illustrations, printer's devices, marginal notes, old shelf marks, handwritten ownership marks and property stamps was included in the Austrian library union cataloguing system Aleph 500 and was thereby made visible for library users. This paper identifies John Darby of Bartholomew Close as the printer of the 1715 Tonson edition of the Works of Edmund Spenser, and the third edition of Edward Young's A Poem on the Last Day. The identifications are based on the evidence of printers' flowers. It is shown that composed arrangements of printers' flowers were sometimes kept as standing type and used in the printing of multiple works; the fact that this can allow unknown printers to be identified is explained and demonstrated for the first time. The collation of arrangements of printers' flowers, it is suggested, could be used more extensively in the future to gain a fuller picture of John Darby's career, and could potentially be applied to the works of other printers. The article discusses the art and symbolism of the decorations on the cover of a medieval gospel book that once belonged to the Abbess Theophanu of Essen, which is part of the treasury of the Minster of Essen, Germany, formerly known as the Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian. The author focuses on two ivory reliefs depicting, respectively, the birth and death of Jesus Christ. Topics addressed in the iconological analysis presented include the representation of Biblical stories in medieval art, the use of precious stones in book decoration and ornamentation, and the symbolic link between Jesus and Moses established by the design.

Abstract A flyleaf bearing the title of Matthew's gospel, found with the Luke fragments of 4 (henceforth P4), has been neglected in studies of P4 as well as in editions of the Greek New Testament. This article publishes for the first time a photograph of the flyleaf, and seeks to provide an accurate transcription of the often misspelled title. It also discusses the various factors impinging upon the date of the fragment, such as the Philo codex in which it was found and the apostrophe in the middle of Matthew's name. A date in the late second or early third century makes best sense of the evidence, making this neglected flyfleaf the earliest manuscript title of Matthew's gospel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 1998 the author published a blueprint for his research in the ornamentation of early modern books in Quaerendo, then under the supervision of Ton van Uchelen. In 2007 this research resulted in a thesis on the subject called De beer is los (Foxes on the Loose). In this special edition of Quaerendo a new blueprint is presented. This time it is for research on layout. Inspired by the writings of his promotor, Professor Janssen and in close cooperation with his Belgian colleague Goran Proot, the author proposes to develop a computer-assisted model for layout that can be used to examine the interaction between ideas and the pages on which these are presented. The Idea of a book is derived from the famous Dutch typographer Huib van Krimpen (1917-2002). The article discusses the discovery of a book believed to be bound by cleric and bookbinder Johannes Richenbach, and compares the binding to Richenbach's other works. The book, an incunable, is a copy of the "Biblia Latina" printed by Anton Koberger and held at the Huntington Library. Details related to the design and construction of the binding, including the use of pigskin leather and Richenbach's process of decorative stamping, are presented. Bookbinding in Ulm, Germany is also discussed.

The article discusses the use of gold leaf as a bookbinding decoration. This bookbinding decoration, which is also called the surface gilding, is said to be evident in art deco bindings in France during the 1920s and 1930s and has been commonly used by design binders in the modern times. Also explored is the author's experience of developing several techniques for surface gilding on large surfaces, as well as some illustrations for gilding loose sheets or plaquettes of leather on the bound book.

This research project presents the history and characteristics of traditional Korean books and bookbinding. The article also discusses some aspects of Chinese books and bookbinding that bear a particularly important relation to Korean books and form the origins and development of bookbinding in East Asia. The style of Korean bookbinding had developed under the influence of China, but its uniqueness can be recognised in paper, printing techniques, bookbinding materials and decoration. The Korean scroll constituted the majority of book formats until the twelfth century. Concertina binding had been used extensively for Buddhist texts since the middle of the Goryeo period. Side-stitched binding became the predominant binding style in Korea from the thirteenth century, long before it became popular in China. Paper mulberry was the dominant material for book paper. From the fourteenth century, the most distinctive feature of Korean publishing was the use of movable metal type, coexisting with the earlier woodblock printing. The article offers information on the Bonefolder's Bind-O-Rama challenge and online exhibition, initiated in 2004. It states that the previous Bind-O-Ramas featured the springback in 2004, the edelpappband/millimeter in 2005, the flag book in 2006, and the set book on the catalog to the Guild of Book Workers' 100th anniversary catalog in 2008. As for the 2008 event, it features work exhibiting any of the structures described in the previous issues of the publication. The article also offers information on various works of several artists featured in the previous Bind-O-Ramas including full harmatan leather binding by Sherry Barber in Texas, clip arts fish cut out of the flag book accordion by Pamela Clare Barrios in Utah and the tunnel book by Cathy Berg in Vancouver.

The article offers information on the book making class attended by several high school students in the U.S. It states that after the completion of the projects, the participating students were questioned about their experiences and their thought about their tasks. The observations and interviews with the students who completed the two projects during the session were analyzed using Core Thinking Skills. In addition, the Core Thinking Skills model furnished a framework for understanding the participants' raw and concrete portrayals of the thought they experienced.

In a previous study the author proposed that the third edition of Leviathan (the 'Ornaments') was produced not long before 1702 (the date given in the earliest dated copy). An alternative view, dating the edition to 1670 and suggesting that it incorporated corrections by Hobbes, was put forward by the late Karl Schuhmann; it was based on both typographical and textual evidence. This article considers Schuhmann's arguments and finds them unconvincing. It also adduces some new evidence (concerning the prices at which copies of Leviathan sold, and the ornaments and type of the third edition), on the basis of which it proposes that this edition was produced in the period 1695-1702, probably by the printer John Darby. The article focuses on bookcloth in England and the United States from 1823 to 1850. It discusses the collaboration between London bookbinder Archibald Leighton with a dyer to transform plain cloth fabric into a material suited to the covering of books. It provides information about early bookcloth production, bookcloth grain patterns, decorative designs for bookcloth, and the Catalogue of Nineteenth-Century Bookcloth Grains.

Educational programs in the book arts and book crafts now take the place of traditional apprenticeships. These programs provide students with wide experience spanning printing, papermaking and book work while they also introduce current materials and techniques of the graphic arts. Though lacking the intensity and career commitments of the traditional apprenticeship these programs now provide access to professional fields of library preservation, book studies and specialty book production. The panelists described the current community of educational programs and their various sponsoring institutions. The article presents information on the Italian fifteenth-century bookbindings. Italian fifteenth-century bindings with gilt decoration have received a great deal of attention since the daysof Prideaux, Horne, Brassington and Weale. Blind-stamped bindings were largely ignored. Students were deterred by the examples more common on manuscripts than on printed books, which are decorated with what look like short lengths of cord. The first person to appreciate that blind-tooled bindings of the incunabular period were worthy of study was Tammaro de Marinis. The study of bindings can help to elucidate the history of individual copiest and so throw light on the dissemination of editions. But a great deal more work has to be done on Italian bindings before a corpus of relIable information is available.

The article discusses the importance of book covers for free textbook schools. The use of means to preserve the books owned by free textbook cities and towns is the greatest importance. Educators are endorsing the guideline entitled "Holden System for Preserving Books" to preserve those textbooks for future generation.
