Since 2016, there has been a flood of research on the US right spanning disciplines and methodologies. This article theorizes a conceptual heuristic drawn from the writing of Stuart Hall to integrate this scholarship. To make the case for what I term Hall’s political sociology, I stage a dialogue with Arlie Hochschild, whose 2016 ethnography Strangers in Their Own Land has become a classic in the literature. While both Hall and Hochschild stress the importance of documenting the affective nature of political subjectivities, Hochschild’s investment in a politics of reconciliation prevents her from scaling analysis up to political elites, a move that would enable her to better contextualize her findings. Hall offers a model for such an approach, as he connects political subjectivities to acts of articulation; these acts to hegemonic projects; and the impact of such projects to the conjuncture. I stylize Hall’s four-step conceptual frame as a relational cycle because it reconnects the historicizing work of conjunctural analysis to the felt experience of individual subjectivities. Beyond outlining Hall’s political sociology, I illustrate how its use as a heuristic can integrate recent research on the US right. This scheme corrects for an analytic shortcoming driven by Hochschild’s politics of reconciliation, namely a view that political progress will emerge from small-scale, cross-partisan dialogue. Though Hall offers no easy answers to the political questions of our time, his relational political sociology provides a tool for interlacing the research we have, thus rendering the massive challenges of the moment visible in all their detail.

Recent research in the field of education studies has raised concerns about anthropocentric discourses and methods regarding materiality. Creating new pedagogical approaches and practices to advance cultural and material understanding is the key objective for scholars and educators. This article demonstrates how the collection of self-taken digital photographs of stones activated a researcher for educational thinking process, and it does this methodologically by using situated writing and digital photographs as co-thinkers. The main task is to explore the meaning of blurred relationships of material worlds by asking especially what stones, and especially children's interest towards stones, can teach us, what they can remind us of, and how they may help us reflect on education and growth as a celebration of open approaches and critical reconsiderations in order to deflect the focus away from anthropocentric subjectivity. The aim is to produce a novel contribution and a situated writing sample of not representing world and education but encountering them anew and being part of its process, connecting things that are not typically connected. The article is the first to address how teachers can evaluate their professional reflection within the neuroscience framework. The authors discuss the potential and conditions for teachers' self-monitoring, driven by internal personal stimuli. The article aims to offer a preliminary overview of neuropedagogical literature, paving the way for further research. Additionally, it seeks to outline the neurophysiological basis of teachers' professional reflection and conduct a demonstrative sociological quasi-experiment. This experiment supports the main thesis that reflexivity, reflection, and self-reflection in teachers when driven by intrinsic motivation, can function both as a professional tool and as a subject of transformation in neuropedagogy, while also being measurable and interpretable through neuroscientific approaches. The authors used methods of relevant selection and systematic analysis of scientific sources, along with pedagogical modelling, which involved developing an algorithm to stimulate and sustain natural teacher reflection. They also applied quasi-experimental surveys to assess the presence and level of awareness of three distinct stages of professionally significant reflection among teachers. The study reveals that many existing theories of reflection within academic discourse fail to enhance the effectiveness of professional teacher reflection adequately. This reflection can become natural and ongoing when grounded in one's internal emotional stimuli, with minimal external influences. The authors established the importance of distinguishing and measuring the phenomena of reflexivity, professional reflection, and self-reflection, which can be incorporated into the broader neuro-structure of a specialist's self-regulation. These concepts can also be applied to the theory of pedagogical reflexology. The international significance of the article lies in the potential to apply the self-monitoring model of professional reflection for teachers within the neuropedagogical framework of teacher training programmes. Critics of Nicole Krauss's Great House (2010) find the novel "downbeat," "tragic," and "bleak." Such interpretations rely on what Peter J. Rabinowitz has called "the rule of conclusive endings" by privileging the narrator of the final chapter. However, as a braided narrative, Great House weaves together five characters who narrate different stories that lead to more hopeful interpretations. The following article proposes that Krauss invites readers to simultaneously privilege multiple, conflicting interpretations by emphasizing the occasions on which her character-narrators speak. Although occasion is the central term in the rhetorical definition of narrative according to James Phelan and Rabinowitz, it has not received as much theoretical attention as the other components. Each narrator's occasion has clear temporal dimensions that cannot be reduced to one side of the story/discourse binary. Although many postclassical schools of narratology have moved away from the story/discourse distinction as central to the definition of narrative, theorists still use this binary when describing narrative order. This pair of terms fails to capture a crucial dimension of narrative time: telling time, the story moments from which a narrator speaks that contain every word of their text. While the Great House's text order ending leads to a depressing conclusion, the novel's telling order and simultaneous telling times illuminate more optimistic interpretations. Attending to the dimension of telling time in Great House illuminates an intersubjective field that not only makes the novel's tragic themes bearable but also imbues the novel with a sense of vitality and hope. In Namibia, Damara pastoralists share the environment with many beings including elephants, tricksters, and winds. While the importance of other-than-human subjectivity is well established, its methodological, epistemological, and ontological challenges are less settled. To address them, we combine expertise from anthropology and philosophy to ask how this world becomes what it is, using Edith Steins's notion of empathy (Einfühlung) as a theoretical guide. This allows us to show how Damara people use empathy to understand how different 'others' experience the world. We identify the basis for this in a 'pre-reflective other-awareness', which amounts to the implicit bodily awareness of the other's presence, and its influence on the situation and on oneself. At the same time, empathy differs, and only those other-than-humans with whom people fully empathise add perspectives that build an intersubjective reality that is different from any world in which those other-perspectives would not exist. This article explores the relationship between everyday life and play, focusing on the mundane play practices of speedrunning. Employing autoethnographic techniques, the author analyzes her own experiences speedrunning and transitioning as case studies, drawing out the temporalities and affective dimensions of both, as well as the ways media practices and subjectivity become intertwined. To be specific, the article examines the experience of living in the impasse, which is brought on by temporal engagements, such as the reset and the grind, with videogames. Living in the impasse is characterized by prolonged waiting periods inherent to both trans life and videogame play and gives rise to negative affects like boredom, frustration, and pain. The Australian gay liberation movement has been memorialized on-screen only relatively recently, with the production of the self-described telemovie Riot (dir. Jeffrey Walker, Australia, 2018). A fictional narrative based on the real-world activism that led to the first Sydney Mardi Gras, Riot authenticates the relation of its story to historical events in part by giving its characters the same names as some of the more prominent activists organizing in the seventies. Yet what is most striking about Riot is the way in which it privileges another kind of historical agent—television—in its story of queer activism. This article considers the significance that Riot accords television as a public, historically conscious, family-oriented, and nation-building medium that converges with and enables gay activism as well as new forms of sexual subjectivity and self-expression. Between its opening framing as televisual event and its riot sequence, the telemovie privileges television's past and future capacity to both document and dramatize historical events and also to broadcast queer visibility to the nation. Through its collage of archival effects and codes of liveness, Riot transmutes the televisual into a timeless medium of public vitality absorbed by its queer characters and made available to its contemporary queer audiences. Thus Riot, via its discourse of television, seeks to guarantee not only a narrative of liberal progress of public visibility and queer human rights, but also the existence of queer selves and communities—that is, queer social lives—across time and across generations. There is a tendency in recent curriculum reforms to put the major emphasis on the status and role of students. The OECD's Education 2030 project, for example, presents the concept of 'student agency' as a key vision for future learning frameworks. The OECD's discourse of student agency appears to serve as a catalyst for spreading the slogan that students should be the subjects of learning and specifically for expanding the scope of student freedom as never before. This study aims to rethink the meanings of student freedom and subjectivity within this discourse of student agency. To this end, I analyse the characteristics of student freedom that emerge in recent curriculum reforms and then present some criticisms of this conceptualization. In response, I suggest an alternative conceptualization of student freedom that puts the emphasis on students becoming subjects in learning. In doing so, I draw upon the philosophical ideas of Levinas and Cavell. Both are philosophers who provide a theoretical horizon that can overcome egocentrism and re-examine human freedom and subjectivity in relationships with others. Drawing on Catherine Malabou's notion of plasticity, this article argues for a conception of resilience as plastic. Resilience has proven an important concept in health care, describing how we manage life-changing illnesses. Yet, resilience is not without its critics, who suggest it neglects a political, social, or personal dimension in illness. In this article, I propose that a concept of plastic resilience can address these criticisms. On this account, success should not be based on a return to function, but rather on how actively we are involved in the formation of a new self after illness. I address some approaches that can benefit from "plastic resilience," namely, art therapy, expert companionship, and shared decision-making. In each case, I underline how we should help patients thematize and engage with their new selves, while also being constantly vigilant for how these changes might impact our current assumptions around their preferences for treatment. Qu'est-ce qu'une psychothérapie aujourd'hui ? Pourquoi en évaluer les mécanismes thérapeutiques ? Comment enseigner ces pratiques ? Telles sont les trois questions essentielles et complémentaires auxquelles la revue L'Évolution Psychiatrique nous invite à répondre. L'élucidation des mécanismes thérapeutiques, « Pourquoi et Comment une psychothérapie produit-elle des effets ? », est déjà un axe de questionnement des pratiques et des théories au début du vingtième siècle. Pierre Janet et Sigmund Freud cherchent l'un et l'autre une réponse scientifique à cette question. Janet l'aborde à partir d'une étude historique des méthodes de psychothérapies et de leurs résultats. Elles sont justifiées par des mécanismes très divers. À partir de 250 cas qu'il a lui-même traités par la suggestion hypnotique, il considère qu'il ne s'agit pas de créer des ressources nouvelles mais d'utiliser celles que la pensée possède déjà. Freud, à la même période, situe la psychothérapie comme un processus qui permet de rendre l'inconscient conscient. Il précise que, s'il a abandonné l'hypnose, cela a été pour découvrir à nouveau la suggestion sous la forme du transfert. Les méthodologies médicales et psychologiques de la recherche évaluative sont rapidement distinguées. Deux évolutions majeures sont à souligner au cours de cette période. La première est l'élargissement du champ d'application de la psychothérapie à des troubles de l'enfance, à des troubles graves de la personnalité ainsi qu'à des troubles psychotiques et psychosomatiques. Les uns et les autres se révèlent être des troubles multifactoriels complexes. La seconde est le développement de la recherche en biologie puis sur le cerveau en relation avec le contexte de la réalité incluant les phases précoces du développement, le stress et les traumatismes. Quelles sont les conséquences de cette évolution sur les théories actuelles et les pratiques ? Pour répondre à ces questions, nous avons abordé cette évolution en associant à l'historique des méthodes de la psychothérapie (P. Janet) quatre acteurs majeurs du champ neuroscientifique qui ont publié sur : l'évolution et le développement et la conscience (G.M. Edelman), la biologie moderne et la psychanalyse (E. Kandel), la psychothérapie clinique et neurobiologique des troubles complexes (A.R. Schore) et la socialisation des contingences sensorimotrices (A. Lübbert). Ces cinq auteurs se sont engagés dans une approche pluridisciplinaire ouverte à la psychothérapie. Leurs travaux apportent une consistance importante aux conditions qui interviennent dans l'effet et les mécanismes d'une psychothérapie. Ils éclairent les changements qu'elle produit et contribuent à en saisir l'origine et une partie de la cause. La biologie et la psychologie font bon ménage. Leur influence réciproque apporte au clinicien des informations sur ce qui intervient concrètement non seulement dans l'alliance thérapeutique mais aussi dans le passage d'une actualité développementale et d'un niveau de conscience à un autre. Un principe majeur en est l'importance de l'attachement et des phases précoces du développement, mais aussi des possibilités qui se trouvent ouvertes par la neuroplasticité ajustée à l'expérience. Elle accompagne la recaractérisation des groupes neuronaux dans les expériences actuelles, incluant celle de la psychothérapie. Beaucoup reste à faire dans le domaine de la formation et des pratiques. What is psychotherapy today? Why evaluate its therapeutic mechanisms? How can these practices be taught? These are the three essential and complementary questions that the journal L'Évolution Psychiatrique invited us to answer. The elucidation of therapeutic mechanisms, "Why and how does psychotherapy produce effects?" has already been a focal point for questioning practices and theories at the beginning of the twentieth century. Pierre Janet and Sigmund Freud both sought a scientific answer to this question. Janet approached it through a historical study of psychotherapy methods and their results, justified by various mechanisms. Based on 250 cases that he himself treated through hypnotic suggestion, he considered that it was not about creating new resources but rather about using those that the mind already possesses. Freud, during the same period, saw psychotherapy as a process that allows the unconscious to become conscious. He noted that although he had abandoned hypnosis, he rediscovered suggestion in the form of transference. He expressed doubts about the reception that evaluation might receive and predicted the upcoming importance of biology. The elucidation of change processes and their mechanisms became the central question in psychotherapy research in the early 2000s (Kazdin, Kraemer et al.). Developmental psychopathology and methodologies applicable to psychotherapies conducted in natural settings are included. Medical and psychological methodologies for evaluative research are quickly distinguished. Two major developments are noteworthy during this period. The first is the broadening of psychotherapy's scope to include childhood disorders, severe personality disorders, as well as psychotic and psychosomatic disorders. These are revealed to be complex multifactorial disorders. The second is the development of research in biology and then on the brain in relation to the context of reality, including early developmental phases, stress, and trauma. What are the consequences of this evolution on current theories and practices? To answer these questions, we approached this evolution by associating the history of psychotherapy methods (P. Janet) with four major actors in the neuroscientific field who have published on: evolution, development, and consciousness (G.M. Edelman); modern biology and psychoanalysis (E. Kandel); clinical and neurobiological psychotherapy of complex disorders (A.R. Schore); and the socialization of sensorimotor contingencies (A. Lübbert). These five authors have engaged in a multidisciplinary approach open to psychotherapy. Their work significantly contributes to understanding the conditions that influence the effects and mechanisms of psychotherapy. They shed light on the changes it produces and help grasp their origin and part of the cause. Biology and psychology work well together. Their reciprocal influence provides clinicians with information about what concretely intervenes not only in the therapeutic alliance but also in the transition from one developmental reality and level of consciousness to another. A major principle here is the importance of attachment and early developmental phases, as well as the possibilities opened by neuroplasticity adjusted by experience. Neuroplasticity accompanies the re-characterization of neuronal groups in current experiences, including that of psychotherapy. The knowledge regarding the influence of early negative experiences and relational traumas, as well as the possibility of positive reorganization, is sufficiently compelling and confirmed to be taught and included in practice. Queer subjectivity invites discussions around gender performativity, culture, narratives of "coming out," and identity politics. Postcolonial queer subjects—like those emerging from the Philippines—require additional layers of critique attending to language, practice, and resistance. This brief reflection will explore the place of camp, rampa, and posthuman worldviews in the constitution of Filipino queer bodies. In the harshest phase of the Cold War between the end of the Second World War and the death of Stalin, the Italian Communist Party, in line with the orientation of international communism, stuck to a model of militancy forged in the 1930s and based on the submission of individual choices and behaviour to the rules dictated by the party. This claim was never fully realized: the discipline operated by the party was not a one-way process, and had to deal with the cultural, familial, existential and affective factors that make up each individual's life. However, the case of the communist leader Emilio Sereni shows how the higher up in the organizational structure one went, the more the identification of the individual with the party intensified, through a logic that affected even the most intimate sphere of feelings and family relationships. In this article, I will discuss how neoliberalism affects subjects and what friendship looks like in the neoliberal world we live in. I will show that one of the most important consequences of neoliberal intervention on the subject is the severe damage to the bonds of friendship. In the neoliberal world, we live constantly in a competitive environment dominated by temporary relationships. Friendships seem to be valuable only to gain advantages and to be ahead of others. Those who have more influential 'friends' are more likely to get what they want. The concept of friendship, then, has to do with a meaning that involves calculating what one must contribute to obtain. In this article, I will try to explore how neoliberalism invests in the subject and how friendship is treated in the neoliberal world. I will ask how 'true friendship' can help us improve our lives by turning to the ways in which friendship shows up in the social relations in which we live. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The social sciences, particularly sociology but also critical theory, have still insufficiently dealt with climate change, especially at the theoretical level. Marx and Marxism, the Frankfurt School and recent approaches in these traditions have articulated some ideas that may furnish a basis to tackle this shortcoming. This article initially presents and draws upon these ideas, developing a theorization about collective subjectivity—as a specific conceptualization of social systems and 'nature'—, with a multidimensional standpoint. It emphasizes a plural material dimension as well as diverse levels of subjectivity and intentionality. An analysis of the concepts of the Anthropocene and Capitalocene ensues, including a discussion of the role of the human species, as well as the developmental trends underlying climate change—, featuring capitalist accumulation and the objectification of the material world by the modern state. This essay provides a thorough analysis of Bruce Robbins's, Jonathan Kramnick's, and John Guillory's recent books on the state of the discipline of literary criticism. In spite of the otherwise vast differences between these books, the authors have three shared commitments. They assume that criticism (understood as the reading of literature) still remains the main focus of departments of literary study. They work with an overwhelmingly male canon of theorists. Although women are invoked as examples, men remain the thought-leaders. They all ignore, neglect, or mischaracterize the concerns of philosophies investigating judgment, experience, and subjectivity. As a result, they present us with an image of a profession in which it is taboo to invoke ordinary experience as a starting point for investigations. By focusing on Robbins's and Guillory's response to Rita Felski's The Limits of Critique (and thus to the phenomenon of postcritique), and by bringing out Kramnick's commitment to positivism and formalism, I conclude that Robbins and Kramnick look to the past for salvation, whereas Guillory shows that the future is unlikely to be any different from the present. This conceptual paper discusses 'unseen observation' as an alternative model of classroom observation to support teachers' professional learning. The paper starts with a critical synopsis of how observation has been appropriated principally as a performance management tool for monitoring teacher effectiveness in the UK. It argues that the overreliance on assessment-based models has led to the hegemony of observation as a performative tool and its subsequent dilution as a catalyst for professional learning to develop teachers' pedagogic thinking and practice. As a counter narrative, this paper proposes an alternative, peer-based model, unseen observation, which reconceptualises and reconfigures observation for professional learning by prioritising collegial meaning-making and reflexive dialogue. Drawing on the concept of intersubjectivity to theorise unseen observation, the principles, purpose and practical application of this model are discussed, along with its benefits and challenges. The paper argues that unseen observation offers a structured approach for stimulating and channelling opportunities for teachers to engage in honest introspection, participatory sensemaking and reflexive dialogue of their practice. Meaningful and sustainable improvements in professional learning are arguably more likely to flourish by creating such opportunities, though further research is needed to investigate the application and impact of unseen observation as a model. This article reflects on what migration studies have accomplished when researching the role of welfare in migration. It highlights that conventional migration theories do not sufficiently account for how people understand welfare and how they interpret and react to welfare perceptions. The article calls for more attention to the interplay of welfare's subjectivity and migration processes to better understand (im)mobility aspirations and decisions. This dynamic interplay can be captured through the concept of welfare mobilities and studied by combining old and new migration theories within a more integrated analytical framework. The article provides an empirical example of the insights that this approach can bring and shows the need to conceptualize welfare as a structure, a process, and an experience to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of its role in migration decision making. This article critically evaluates the role of industrial–organizational psychology in post-apartheid South Africa, advocating for a transformative framework that addresses the socio-political and historical inequalities in the workplace. The article highlights how industrial–organizational psychology has traditionally focused on organizational efficiency, often aligned with capitalist interests, while overlooking the socio-historical forces shaping worker experiences, particularly related to race, gender, and class. By introducing the concept of worker subjectivity, the article calls for a reimagined industrial–organizational psychology that integrates critical perspectives from psychology and management studies to better understand how workers navigate their identities and agency within broader socio-political structures. The author emphasizes the need to address the emotional and psychological dimensions of worker experiences, especially in the South African context marked by the legacies of colonialism and apartheid. By focusing on worker subjectivity, industrial–organizational psychology can move beyond traditional quantitative methods and engage with the complexities of workplace inequality. This approach aligns industrial–organizational psychology with the broader mission of the Psychological Society of South Africa to promote socially just and inclusive practices. The article also calls for interdisciplinary collaboration and the reformation of industrial–organizational psychology education to better equip practitioners with the tools needed to address the realities of post-apartheid workplaces. The paper presents an expansion of the perspective on 'differences' by proposing a novel theoretical concept: 'differences work'. Differences work is the subjective and intersubjective effort that is put in place to approach differences from a dynamic stance, to encompass the different processes – identity, relational, and cultural – intertwined in experiencing ourselves and the relationship with differences. The concept is illustrated in its cognitive and emotional components. The paper contributes to developing new sensitivities to the in-situ work on differences, advising to investigate empirically how differences work deploys. The paper suggests methodologies for digging into dialogues and conversations, for entering the self-constructions and others' counter-constructions of differences, and for observing their dynamic and fluid evolution as it happens. The new concept enriches the possibility of going beyond category-oriented policies and orientations in organizations, which are generally aimed at proposing activities not always sufficient to represent all the differences circulating in organizations. Since the end of the 20th century, the Cartesian paradigm of identity has been the object of criticism, raised by different epistemological perspectives, including post-structuralism, feminism, constructionism, and philosophy of language studies. A common aspect of these new theoretical-epistemological perspectives is the search to overcome an idealistic, immaterial, vision of the psychological subject, emphasizing the concrete character of its subjective construction, and the anchoring of the whole process in corporeality. These new trends rediscover the body as a concept within the human and social sciences, especially, inspired by Michel Foucault's work. In Psychology, although the body has recently become an object of increasing interest for different perspectives, a theoretical gap concerning its political dimension, the power forces that cross through corporeity is still observed. This article draws, then, on Queer Theory's epistemological contributions to critical psychology and the construction of such a notion of embodied subjectivity within Cultural Semiotic Psychology, considering the sociocultural processes that operate in the construction of subjects. Additionally, we seek to provide arguments to refuse the understanding that social markers such as sex, gender, and race are mere variables associated with the human, and reinforce that subjects are constitutively sexed, gendered, and racialized. In this article, we present the NewsCom-TOX corpus, a new corpus manually annotated for toxicity in Spanish. NewsCom-TOX consists of 4359 comments in Spanish posted in response to 21 news articles on social media related to immigration, in order to analyse and identify messages with racial and xenophobic content. This corpus is multi-level annotated with different binary linguistic categories -stance, target, stereotype, sarcasm, mockery, insult, improper language, aggressiveness and intolerance- taking into account not only the information conveyed in each comment, but also the whole discourse thread in which the comment occurs, as well as the information conveyed in the news article, including their images. These categories allow us to identify the presence of toxicity and its intensity, that is, the level of toxicity of each comment. All this information is available for research purposes upon request. Here we describe the NewsCom-TOX corpus, the annotation tagset used, the criteria applied and the annotation process carried out, including the inter-annotator agreement tests conducted. A quantitative analysis of the results obtained is also provided. Teacher subjectivity refers to the autonomy, initiative, and creativity demonstrated by teachers in grasping, transforming, regulating, controlling objects, and expressing themselves in educational activities. This essay explores the shifting matrix underlying the pervasive theater that enacts the making and unmaking of human subjectivity by focusing on key historical transformations and prominent contemporary manifestations. Offering a comparative analysis of Denis Diderot's theory of the actor, and Antonin Artaud's theater of cruelty, I argue that the paradox of the human had led to human–artwork hybrids well before the digital age of the posthuman recast the body as virtuality. Drawing on a broader understanding and scope of human–artwork hybridization, I examine two different yet equally memorable and infamous responses in 2015 to the European refugee crisis: the Petra László video and Norbert Baksa's Der Migrant. The aesthetic and cultural practices revolving around the staging of the European refugee crisis constitute a key sphere in which this hybridization is tested, played out and in the context of East-Central Europe, calibrated to a ballad tradition whose generic conventions were reinvented in conjunction with a growing national identity in the 19th century. The ballad of 'The Walled-Up Wife' has enjoyed sustained popularity in East-Central Europe, ever since its anachronistic 'rediscovery' in multiple national literatures around the mid 1800s. It deserves critical attention, for its extensive cultural history as well as its rich vernacular heritage can shed new light on the ways in which the idea of material embodiment comes to bear extended meanings for a reconceptualization of the human in digital spaces of aesthetic rather than merely socio-political signification. After challenging models of human nature and psychological science, a series of interrogations are proposed that aid in improving the practice of theorizing in psychology, specifically in regard to the topic of race. The program of autoepistemology is defined as the study of how "my" knowledge is connected with histories, cultures and societies as well as with the academic communities in which "I" participate, and with "my" personal cognitive, affective and motivational preferences and experiences. Autoepistemology includes reflections about the relationship between psychological knowledge on race, on the one hand, and intellectual and cultural traditions, horizons, and practices, on the other hand. It is argued that theorizing on race is strengthened when addressing equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) as epistemic categories in all contexts of the research process. Epistemic EDI, which includes an interrogation of power, together with institutional and educational EDI, has the potential to dismantle racism in psychology. In Western societies, women are encouraged to present themselves in sexualized ways and are expected to experience this as a form of sexual agency. However, research on women's sexual agency is new and still developing, leading to inconsistent definitions and understandings. In addition, women's experiences of and resistance to violations of their sexual boundaries are frequently overlooked. The current systematic review answers research questions on how sexual agency has been conceptualized, how it has been studied in relation to sexual violence, and how women's social positionality influences sexual agency. A systematic strategy was used to search 10 health and social science databases and analyze 95 full-text articles. A feminist social constructionist framework guided this mixed-methods synthesis and provided a framework for addressing the research questions. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how society and researchers understand women's sexual agency and how intersectionality is largely ignored. Findings also identify an urgent need for future research to consider the relations between violence against women and women's perceptions of (or lack of) sexual agency. Future policymakers, researchers, and educators should move away from a one-size-fits-all approach in their work and instead, consider the diverse impact of societal expectations on women. Questions of subjectivity are increasingly key to critical studies of migration, which highlight the production of subjectivities as one of the central functions of borders. Yet the question of how borders operate at a psychic level is rarely considered. Drawing inspiration from Gail Lewis's psychosocial approach to the racial formation of subjects and focusing on the UK asylum system, this article examines how borders shape and are navigated within psychic reality over time. Through close analysis of ethnographic material, I propose the concept of "psychic holds" to understand some of the ways in which borders impinge upon the psychic mobility of those they target over time. This term captures a dual process, invoking both the subjective chokeholds and deep attachments that may be involved in the bordering of subjectivities. This analysis explores Rudyard Kipling's view of the limitations of Western universalist philosophy through three train scenes in Kim (1901). Each scene develops Kim's Bildung in relation to the culturally hybrid spaces of colonized India, and each contrasts the experience of hybridity against European Enlightenment concepts of the material world. There are two distinct types of enlightenment involved: Kim's western education is associated with scientific objectivity, instrumental rationality, and progressive conceptions of civilization; his eastern education involves spiritual clarity, the interdependence of all entities, and transcendence of materialism and its related suffering. Such concepts are challenged by the novel's modernization of Bildungsroman, which emphasizes networks of relations, rather than independence and autonomy. A comparative reading of two panoramic views-from the Grand Trunk Road and from the lama's enlightened perspective-illustrates Kipling's rejection of a unified theory of enlightenment, further complicating the implications ofWestern Enlightenment for unreconciled hybridity. Teaching with virtual worlds provides new means for collaborative learning but creates challenges for teachers in terms of IT skills. To address these challenges, we developed a teaching model for using virtual worlds in classroom practices and applied it to Minecraft in several rounds of design-based research experiments. Our conceptual framework combines ideas from software engineering (sociotechnical congruence) and social sciences (intersubjectivity and emergence). Empirically, we addressed the problem of how shared understanding evolves in computer-mediated learning activities. We video-recorded classroom activities and analyzed them using interaction analysis. The teaching model engaged the students in two interdependent processes, referred to as objects: (1) a social object (discussions) that led to a shared knowledge object (video-recorded role-play) and (2) a technology object (Minecraft buildings) for staging the role-play. Our findings include an empirical phenomenon that we call emergent group understanding, which arose from the complex social interactions between social and technology objects when Minecraft was used as a virtual world in a social studies classroom. This revealed two connected subprocesses: (1) a spontaneous act of providing information to assist learners in contextualizing their actions and interactions against a common background, and (2) setting localized goals to guide future actions and interactions. This finding extends previous research by identifying fine-grained processes of intersubjectivity that contribute to collaborative learning. Netflix has significantly reshaped the global production, distribution, and consumption of audiovisual content. While Netflix claims its algorithm-driven platform provides superior services and limitless choices, it raises concerns about human agency, autonomy, and data justice. These concerns are especially pressing in the Global South, where predatory data extraction practices are prevalent. Research on this issue faces challenges, including a dichotomy between algorithmic power and human agency, limited exploration of user perspectives, and a lack of studies in non-Western contexts. This paper addresses these gaps using a socio-constructivist lens, centering users' experiences in understanding algorithms as sociotechnical systems. Through reflexive in-depth interviews, it examines Netflix users in Egypt, UAE, Morocco, and Jordan. Drawing on Domestication Theory and a relational view of agency, it explores how users engage with, interpret, and resist algorithmic impacts. The paper argues that while users interact with these systems, their engagement is shaped by asymmetrical power, where algorithms control the parameters of user agency. Peri-urbanization in Asia, which is driven by state-led mega-projects, has incorporated peasants on the fringes of cities into the urban fabric through land dispossession and displacement. This paper enriches ongoing debates on peasant experiences in urbanization, with a focus on the role of non-human nature. We apply an urban political ecology analysis that dialectically integrates analyses of political–economic forces and materiality, showing how they mediate peasant dispossession and post-agrarian subjectivities. Drawing on research conducted on the eastern fringe of Vientiane, Laos, where a stretch of agrarian wetland lay, we demonstrate how partial real estate enclosures transformed the ecology of the entire area. Altered flows of water engineered by state officials and project developers constrained agricultural production and peasant livelihoods. The drainage and filling of land combined with a burgeoning property market left landowners with little option but to treat their land as real estate. By engaging in land deals and micro-level property development, these former peasants actively integrated themselves into the emerging urban economy, albeit with uneven success. Our research highlights how the intersection of material nature with the forces and influences of state and capital mediates wetland enclosure, peri-urbanization, and the production of post-agrarian subjectivities. Does artificial intelligence (AI) exhibit consciousness or self? While this question is hotly debated, here we take a slightly different stance by focusing on those features that make possible both, namely a basic or fundamental subjectivity. Learning from humans and their brain, we first ask what we mean by subjectivity. Subjectivity is manifest in the perspectiveness and mineness of our experience which, ontologically, can be traced to a point of view. Adopting a non-reductive neurophilosophical strategy, we assume that the point of view exhibits two layers, a most basic neuroecological and higher order mental layer. The neuroecological layer of the point of view is mediated by the timescales of world and brain, as further evidenced by empirical data on our sense of self. Are there corresponding timescales shared with the world in AI and is there a point of view with perspectiveness and mineness? Discussing current neuroscientific evidence, we deny that current AI exhibits a point of view, let alone perspectiveness and mineness. We therefore conclude that, as per current state, AI does not exhibit a basic or fundamental subjectivity and henceforth no consciousness or self is possible in models such as ChatGPT and similar technologies. Changing socioeconomic conditions are enticing more and more Nigerian mothers to work and pursue careers. This article explores how middle-class professional women navigate working mother subjectivities in the context of Nigeria's strong patriarchal culture, where traditional notions of maternal femininity prevail. We argue that the working mother's subjectivity is a key site where the struggle over gendered cultural meanings takes place. Drawing on 32 qualitative interviews, we demonstrate how a small group of women refused traditional feminine subject positions; however, most mothers either embraced or reluctantly acquiesced to traditional femininity, despite having access to broader cultural repertoires and material resources. By unveiling the complexities of the cultural appeal of traditional femininity and social penalties for breaching it, the article extends our understanding of how patriarchal cultures resist gendered change and the nuances and limits of individual patterns of resistance. When we undertake the project of a phenomenology of pain, and even a deconstruction of the experience of pain, we discover that pain is not merely something that is felt by a subject, but rather pain—and chronic pain, especially—causes the subject to live in a new world. This essay is an investigation of that world. Moving from questions of mind/body dualism to whether or not pains are subjective representations of some material-physical state of the body, a philosophical and physiological analysis of pain is undertaken in an attempt to show how a world of pain emerges and then functions once established. Along the way, issues concerning the measurement of pain, the value of pain, the mystery of the phantom limb in pain, the use of placebos to treat pain, and the question of whether or not pain is necessarily a private experience are taken up, ultimately leading to the conclusion that an established world of pain can usher in a collapse of the distinction between subjects and their pain such that chronic pain sufferers might meaningfully be said to become their pain. As a self-improvement discourse, 'vulnerability' brings a compelling promise for software workplaces around engendering productivity, innovation and creativity among employees. While critical studies have interrogated various self-improvement discourses, less is known about how workers respond to and negotiate these discourses in professional contexts. This article asks how workers of North American software companies construct vulnerability. It finds that constructions instrumentalize vulnerability in the workplace as the exposure of failures, mistakes and knowledge gaps to enact organizational resilience. Reading is not a linear process. In this commentary on Struppe-Schanda's autoethnographic work, I explore the multilinear nature of reading from the experience of being able or unable to 'read' her work. This commentary attempts an autoethnography that emphasises the subjective feelings of the researcher and resists the traditional modalities of 'science'. In determining the starting point for this commentary, whether as an autoethnographer or cultural psychologist, I discovered numerous potential directions for further development. Presented as a fictional conversation with my other self, this commentary delves into the implications of deliberative autoethnography, which seeks to explore subjectivity differently from mainstream evocative autoethnography. Standard Euro-American ideas of sincerity revolve around an idea of the transparent alignment of one's outer acts with the inner self, such that the audience can clearly deduce the latter from the former. The development and spread of such ideas has been widely linked to the emergence of modern subjectivity. This article expands upon these analyses, contrasting them with Islamic notions of sincerity (ikhlāṣ) which is predicated not on transparency, but on purity of intention. This apparently minor difference has significant implications: it allows for sincerity to be opaque or deceptive; it gestures towards radically different technologies of self-formation; and it questions the facile and widespread elision of modernity with a particular version of sincerity.
