This article discusses relics housed in the Ringling Circus Museum in Sarasota Florida: photos works of art newspaper clippings performance records and scrapbooks of mostly 19th- and 20th-century circus performers with varied often "unusual" bodies that have been all but forgotten. Encountering these artifacts left the author wonderstruck—a feeling sometimes so abrupt that it heaves us into the conscious presence of others—and left him with a string of complex emotions. Using scrapbooks created by members of the Women's Institute in England in 1965, this article offers a rare insight into women's lived experience and interaction with new technologies and services, in domestic and communal spaces, which show how rural women diligently recorded the new behaviors, emotions, and challenges surrounding rural life. Scrapbookers show multiple and sometimes contradictory attitudes, representing themselves as modern housewives proficient with new consumer durables, while also critiquing the inequalities heralded by new goods and services. Rural women were not simply bystanders to technological change but represented themselves as both consumers and producers of new forms of knowledge, through their use of material culture. The materiality and subject matter of a pair of theatrical scrapbooks held by the Folger Shakespeare Library (Folger MS W.b.110 and W.b.111) provide an unusual, detailed window into the inner workings of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in the first decades of the eighteenth century. Rather than the more common account books for the theater, these scrapbooks preserve the actual receipts for goods and services, complete with signatures and countersignatures of the tradespeople and theater managers. This paper explores how the "Shakespeare Factor" influenced the collecting practices of nineteenth-century antiquarians and book collectors, which in turn helped ensure the very survival of these receipts. An office on the first floor of the Theatre Royal, Haymarket has six images painted directly on the walls that have remarkably survived many redecorations. This room was actor-manager Cyril Maude's dressing room between 1896 and 1905 when he was joint manager of the Theatre Royal alongside Frederick Harrison. To its fullest extent, Maude's exceptional dressing room was adorned with a gallery of forty images created in greasepaint by fellow actors and friends. Famous cartoonists Phil May, Harry Furniss, Bernard Partridge, Leonard Raven-Hill and Leslie Ward left their mark. The greasepaint gallery can be read as an extension of the fashion for collecting autographs; most of the images were signed and some dated. Equally, the gallery acts as a nostalgic scrapbook commemorating productions and recording famous visitors who were granted entrée behind the scenes. Working through what I term 'a cinephilia steeped in the distrust of pleasure', I argue that some moviegoing girls turned to private scrapbooking and film reviewing to sort out embattled feelings arising while coming of age in the United States at a time of social upheaval, war, and epidemics. While student voice pedagogies have been cited as a powerful educational tool in engaging children in the learning process, the perspectives of primary-aged children on using these pedagogies as part of everyday practice need to be considered. Within this research, student voice pedagogies were implemented as part of one teacher's regular primary physical education (PE) practice and children's perspectives of these pedagogies were explored. Qualitative data were collected from two consecutive cohorts of children (n = 39) over a 6-month and 9-month period respectively. Data sources included the children's written entries in their PE scrapbooks, along with transcripts from focus group interviews (n = 4, with 16 total participants) and a teacher-led classroom discussion (n = 1). Findings show that providing children with space to share their input, along with the appropriate information to inform their voices is important to the children. Offering choices and opportunities for the children to direct their learning experiences greatly mattered to how they experienced PE. These findings illustrate the value of student voice pedagogies as everyday practice to the quality of children's experiences in physical education. 1965 marked the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Women's Institute (WI), which some members commemorated by making a scrapbook recording village life in England and Wales. As this competition shows, scrapbooks were just as appealing to community organizations such as the WI, as they were to individuals and families, yet it is the latter who have attracted the most scholarly interest. I reorientate this focus to argue that scrapbooks have historically functioned as community archives, inaugurating WI women into becoming their villages' record-keepers, as they recorded what it meant to them to live in the English countryside in the 1960s. In their submissions, WI women reflected on the opportunities and challenges of creating an archive, allowing a rare insight into the experiences of grassroots record-keeping by an overlooked group of community archivists. By focusing on members of the WI, a largely conservative, countryside organization, this article diversifies both the sites of community archives, as well as the demographics of those who participated in community archival practices. Albums assembled from fragmentary materials present a special set of problems for bibliographic research. Inaccurately described in catalogs and often caught between different fields, these hybrid objects can be tricky to find within collections and even more difficult to place historically in terms of genre. Yet understanding these seemingly idiosyncratic albums has become more important to book history than ever, as the field pushes to tell deeper histories of the material text. This essay begins from the premise that the modern library catalog is, as an ordering technology, incapable of accurately describing these unique books. In order to dispel the fog of naïve wonderment that often persists around them, I proceed to develop a taxonomy of what fragments are (whether remnants , snippets , or pieces , with the related notion of scraps) and a spectrum of their use within collections (as specimens of something or as raw stuff to create something new). Finally, I draw on the terms laid out in this essay to survey some major genres of assembled albums, including Romantic albums, scrapbooks, paper doll houses, chromolithographic albums, Victorian photocollage, design portfolios, sample books, leaf books, and extra-illustrated volumes. Publicity materials heralded the New York Hippodrome as the world's largest theatre and the National Theatre. Managers Elmer Dundy and Fred Thompson based their claim for national status on the venue's size. Their ideology considered big to be better because it proclaimed success, efficiency, and the organisation and consumption of pleasurable experiences to be the responsibility of every American citizen-consumer. Using publicity, costume designs, sketches, illustrations, production stills, newspaper reports and a scrapbook, I explore their nationalistic vision. I demonstrate how the opening's entertainments performed Dundy and Thompson's populist Americanness through narrative, design aesthetics and moments that exceeded the dramatic frame. The first of the two night's productions, A Yankee Circus on Mars (1905), presented Mars as an idealised surrogate America. The production deliberately centred circus to designate their venue as 'American' due to circus's status as an intrinsically American entertainment. Circus provided practical benefits in filling the vast interior with spectacle and covering long stage waits. Presenting circus end-on in the New York Hippodrome designated the venue 'American', but created an experience that was akin to circus. Focusing on responses to aerial acts, I demonstrate the visual gains and visceral losses to experiencing aerialists within the Hippodrome space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this historical investigation was to contribute to the growing body of knowledge about women in music education by means of documenting the life and career of Genevieve F. Hargiss (1912-1995), a lesser known yet exemplary twentieth-century music educator. Through the investigation of primary source materials including Hargiss's personal scrapbooks, interviews, and her scholarly publications, as well as newspaper articles and oral histories, this paper explores Hargiss's contributions to the field of music education from 1929 to 1982. This study argues that Hargiss made a lasting impact in her field through her innovative, research-based improvements to professional teacher-training programs and elementary general music programs in Kansas, Arizona, and across the U.S. Hargiss blazed a trail for women in the field of music education through her excellence in performing, research, mentoring, and teaching; a brilliant educator and scholar – "not just for her time, but for any time." The article explores the intersection between women, reading and colonization in late-19th-century Australia. Particular focus is given to the diary and scrapbook of an Australian girl named Mabel Ogilvie, which focused upon an imaginary realm centered on ideas surrounding Puseyism, a spiritual and ritualistic form of Anglicanism. Purpose: This research examined the effect of Scrapbook media-based QR codes to improve students' motivation to learn Social Studies. Methodology This inquiry used the Research and Development (RND) method to develop a Scrapbook media-based QR code product and test the resulting product's effectiveness; the researcher used an experimental form of one group pretest-posttest design. This research and development used the ADDIE model, which contained five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. The population of this study comprised fourth-grade elementary school students from the Srengseng subdistrict, Kembangan, West Jakarta. The sample of this study was drawn randomly, employing the Slovin formula, with 73 students as the experimental group. The data analysis approach in this study uses a paired sample t-test to test the hypothesis and the Kolmogorov-Smimov test to test the normality of the data distribution. Findings This study found that the posttest mean score for 73 students was 58.22, which was greater than the pretest means of 83.42. This study concludes that applying a Scrapbook media-based QR code positively improves the learning motivation of fourth-grade elementary school students in the Srengseng sub-district, Kembangan, West Jakarta, Indonesia. Implications to Research and Practice This research contributes to increasing students' motivation to gain knowledge and experience using technology in 21st-century learning, especially in fun social studies learning.
