We present a novel simulation approach combined with pulsed laser experiments, spectroscopic ellipsometry, and Raman spectroscopy to comprehensively analyze phase transformation dynamics in thin films. The simulations apply to any thin film stack and incorporate critical factors, such as thin film interference, heat transfer, and temperature-dependent optical properties during heating and melting. As a case study, we investigate the picosecond laser-induced amorphization of antimony sulfide (Sb2S3) thin films, a promising alternative to traditional phase-change materials in photonic applications to validate the simulation model. The computational efficiency of our simulations enables not only the investigation of the laser-induced phase transformation but also the optimization of key process parameters and parameter fitting. The simulations identified optimal film thickness and laser fluence parameters that maximize energy efficiency, melting effectiveness, and quenching rate while ensuring high reflectivity contrast between the amorphous and crystalline states. By constructing a wide-ranging, high-resolution parameter map of the laser fluence and film thickness dependence of the melting process, we demonstrate how this model guides the understanding of phase transformation dynamics. Raman spectroscopy confirms the polycrystalline to amorphous transition of Sb2S3 and provides a semiquantitative estimate of the amorphous fraction as a function of laser fluence, which is qualitatively consistent with the simulation predictions of the model. The open-source simulation framework, experimentally validated, provides valuable insights into laser-induced amorphization dynamics in Sb2S3 and related phase-change material thin films, enabling rapid optimization of photonic devices. In this paper, we investigate the role of electron correlation in predicting the S1–S0 and T1–S0 excitation energies and, hence, the singlet–triplet gap (ΔEST) in a set of cyclazines, which act as templates for potential candidates for fifth generation organic light emitting diode materials. This issue has recently garnered much interest with the focus being on the inversion of the ΔEST, although experiments have indicated near degenerate levels with both positive and negative being within the experimental error bar [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 102, 6068 (1980), J. Am. Chem. Soc. 108, 17(1986)]. We have carried out a systematic and exhaustive study of various excited state electronic structure methodologies and identified the strengths and shortcomings of the various approaches and approximations in view of this challenging case. We have found that near degeneracy can be achieved either with a proper balance of static and dynamic correlation in multireference theories or with state-specific orbital corrections, including its coupling with correlation. The role of spin contamination is also discussed. Eventually, this paper seeks to produce benchmark numbers for establishing cost-effective theories, which can then be used for screening derivatives of these templates with desirable optical and structural properties. Additionally, we would like to point out that the use of domain-based local pair natural orbital-similarity transformed EOM-coupled cluster singles and doubles as the benchmark for ΔEST [as used in J. Phys. Chem. A 126(8), 1378 (2022), Chem. Phys. Lett. 779, 138827 (2021)] is not a suitable benchmark for these classes of molecules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Because copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) has significant uses in industrial devices and pigments, it is a subject of great interest in basic scientific research. Studying and adjusting its photoelectric qualities, in particular, has drawn much attention. In this work, in situ high-pressure experiments were used to investigate in detail the vibrational and optical properties of ground-state β-CuPc up to 13 GPa. Both micro-Raman and ultraviolet and visible light (UV–vis) absorption measurements revealed a phase transition occurring around 3 GPa. Notably, the macrocycle breathing vibration was found to have a remarkable characteristic of first weakening and then strengthening in response to this pressure-induced phase transition. The UV–vis absorption data revealed that the bandgaps corresponding to the two absorption edges decrease gradually with increasing pressure, with one edge disappearing entirely above 11 GPa. Furthermore, the blue β-CuPc can be adjusted to dark green at 10 GPa and ultimately entirely black due to the merging of its absorption bands and redshifts at high pressure. Skin expansion is a well-established technique in plastic surgery, and recent studies have highlighted its potential in promoting hair regeneration. This study aimed to explore how the mechanical and optical properties of skin change during a prolonged stretching process. A hybrid method was developed to assess, in vivo, the effects of an 8-day skin stretching protocol—previously used in hair regeneration research—on the dorsal skin of mice. This method combined mechanical and optical measurement systems. Tensile stress–strain curves were generated using a spring-based setup, while optical properties such as scattering and birefringence were analyzed with a polarimetry imaging system that incorporated the Mueller matrix (MM) and Mueller matrix polar decomposition (MMPD) methods. The results showed that Young's modulus increased from approximately 5 kPa on day 1 to 60–100 kPa by days 6–8, indicating collagen fiber straightening and increased stiffness. Optical analysis revealed greater anisotropy in both scattering and birefringence, as reflected by changes in MM elements and MMPD results. These changes suggest skin adaptation and regeneration, particularly within the first 24 h of stretching. Interestingly, alterations in optical properties closely mirrored changes in mechanical properties, pointing to a coordinated process of structural remodeling and functional adaptation in the skin. Beyond hexagons, a distinctive family of pentagonal two-dimensional materials (2DMs) has emerged, featuring asymmetric geometry, exotic characteristics, and promising applications. Pentagonal tessellation of 2DMs generally leads to semiconducting bandgaps and directional electrical and optical properties. The theoretical prediction of penta-graphene and the experimental realization of materials, such as PdSe2, PdPSe, PdPS, and NiN2, have revealed a new horizon for penta-materials, showcasing high air stability and inherent auxeticity. Due to the rarity of pentagonal topology in nature, it is crucial to employ computational models and simulations to establish the stable configurations of these materials and understand their behavior in pentagonal arrangements. Consequently, the multitude of theoretically predicted penta-materials far surpasses the number of experimentally synthesized ones, numbering in the hundreds. A comprehensive catalog encapsulates recent progress, properties, and future perspectives, unlocking their full potential and paving the way for experimental realization. Organic electronics (OE) such as organic light-emitting diodes or organic solar cells represent an important and innovative research area to achieve global goals like environmentally friendly energy production. To accelerate OE material discovery, various computational methods are employed. For the initial generation of structures, a molecular cluster approach is employed. Here, we present a semi-automated workflow for the generation of monolayers and aggregates using the GFNn-xTB methods and composite density functional theory (DFT-3c). Furthermore, we present the novel D11A8MERO dye interaction energy benchmark with high-level coupled cluster reference interaction energies for the assessment of efficient quantum chemical and force-field methods. GFN2-xTB performs similar to low-cost DFT, reaching DFT/mGGA accuracy at two orders of magnitude lower computational cost. As an example application, we investigate the influence of the dye aggregate size on the optical and electrical properties and show that at least four molecules in a cluster model are needed for a qualitatively reasonable description. The effect of cadmium ions introduced into fluorophosphate glass on the growth and photoluminescence (PL) of the CsPb1–xCdxBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) is systematically studied. The x-ray diffraction patterns have shown that cadmium ions are really incorporated into the NCs that results in a decrease in the lattice constant from 5.85 (x = 0) to 5.75 Å (x = 0.45). At the large cadmium content in the glass (x > 0.38), simultaneous formation of the perovskite CsPb1–xCdxBr3 NCs and the non-luminescent CsCdBr3 NCs in the hexagonal phase is found. It is also found that the lattice contraction leads to an increase in the bandgap energy and a noticeable shift of the PL band to the blue region of the spectrum (from 2.42 to 2.68 eV) with a drop in quantum yield from 85% for CsPbBr3 NCs down to 4% for CsPb0.55Cd0.45Br3 NCs. It is shown that the PL quantum yield decreases due to the formation of deep trap states, which manifest themselves as a PL band in the energy range of 1.6–2.5 eV at cryogenic temperatures. The Hf/Ti ratio was precisely controlled at monolayer thickness using atomic partial layer deposition (APLD). HfxTi1−xO2 films with varying Hf concentrations were deposited by adjusting the pulse time of Hf precursors within a single atomic layer. Characterization using x-ray reflectivity, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and spectroscopic ellipsometry confirmed the presence of Hf, Ti, and O in the films. Increasing the Hf content caused the binding energies of the O 1s peak to shift to higher values, indicating a chemical environment change from TiO2-like to HfO2-like. A higher Hf content also increased the relative atomic percentages of Hf, Ti, and O, altering the film properties. The mass density and optical properties were notably sensitive to changes in the Hf/Ti ratio at monolayer thickness. The potential of APLD to reduce dimensionality through precise control of both thickness and composition renders it especially appropriate for applications requiring highly specific material properties. We conduct systematic studies of the optical characteristics of plasmonic nanoparticles that exhibit C2v symmetry. In particular, we analyze three distinct geometric configurations: an L-type shape, a crescent, and a split-ring resonator shaped like the Greek letter π. Optical properties are examined using the finite-difference time-domain method. It is demonstrated that all three shapes exhibit two prominent plasmon modes associated with the two axes of symmetry. This is in addition to a wide range of resonances observed at high frequencies corresponding to quadrupole modes and peaks due to sharp corners. Next, to facilitate nonlinear analysis, we employ a semiclassical hydrodynamic model, where the electron pressure term is explicitly accounted for. This model goes beyond the standard Drude description and enables capturing nonlocal and nonlinear effects. Employing this model enables us to rigorously examine the second-order angular resolved nonlinear optical response of these nanoparticles in each of the three configurations. Two pumping regimes are considered, namely, continuous wave (CW) and pulsed excitations. For CW pumping, we explore the properties of the second harmonic generation (SHG). Polarization and angle-resolved SHG spectra are obtained, revealing strong dependence on the nanoparticle geometry and incident wave polarization. The C2v symmetry is shown to play a key role in determining the polarization states and selection rules of the SHG signal. For pulsed excitations, we discuss the phenomenon of broadband terahertz (THz) generation induced by the difference-frequency generation. It is shown that the THz emission spectra exhibit unique features attributed to the plasmonic resonances and symmetry of the nanoparticles. The polarization of the generated THz waves is also examined, revealing interesting patterns tied to the nanoparticle geometry. To gain deeper insight, we propose an analytical theory that agrees very well with the numerical experiments. The theory shows that the physical origin of the THz radiation is the mixing of various frequency components of the fundamental pulse by the second-order nonlinear susceptibility. An expression for the far-field THz intensity is derived in terms of the incident pulse parameters and the nonlinear response tensor of the nanoparticle. The results presented in this work offer new insights into the linear and nonlinear optical properties of nanoparticles with C2v symmetry. The demonstrated strong SHG response and efficient broadband THz generation hold great promise for applications in nonlinear spectroscopy, nanophotonics, and optoelectronics. Nonpolar (100), polar (002), semipolar (101), and nonpolar (110) preferred oriented ZnO films were synthesized by regulated growth using the chemical bath deposition method. The crystallinity, surface morphology, and optical properties of ZnO films with different preferred orientations after annealing in different atmospheres were systematically investigated. The experimental results show an increase in crystallinity and a decrease in surface roughness of the films after annealing; in particular, the optical transmittance of semipolar (101) preferred oriented ZnO films was significantly higher than that of the other samples. XPS and PL spectra confirmed that annealing in argon effectively increased donor defects, whereas annealing in oxygen and ozone reduced donor defects in the films, and that ozone annealing was best suited to enhance acceptor defects in nonpolar (110) preferred oriented ZnO films. Argon annealing is the best for the enhancement of donor defects in polar (002) preferred oriented ZnO films. This work achieves modulation of optical properties and defects of ZnO films by annealing in different atmospheres, which provides new ideas for the application of ZnO materials. The absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra of negatively photodoped ZnO nanocrystals dispersed in ethanol are measured under a stepwise photodoping process at room temperature. The spectra are measured almost simultaneously at each photodoping level and compared in detail to discuss the origin of the spectral change. The redshift of the PL spectrum and the increase of its intensity are clearly observed in the early stage of photodoping and are attributed to the trion luminescence. The PL spectrum is found to split into two peaks for highly photodoped nanocrystals. The cause of the splitting is discussed in terms of its dependence on the nanocrystal size. Plasmonic substrates have been extensively investigated due to their potential applications in fluorescence microscopy, chemical sensing, and photochemical reactions. The optical properties of the substrate depend on the spatial and temporal features of the plasmon excited. Hence, the ability to directly visualize plasmon dynamics is crucial. In this study, we investigated the spatial and temporal properties of plasmon excitation in a plasmonic nanobowl substrate consisting of a periodic hexagonal array of nanoscale bowl-like structures developed with self-assembly. Near-field transmission imaging revealed that multiple plasmon resonance bands are observed from visible to near-infrared spectral region, and the optical contrast of the image is dependent on the observed band. Near-field two-photon photoluminescence microscopy revealed that the probability of excitation inside each nanoscale bowl-like structure is greater than that in the surrounding area. Near-field time-resolved imaging revealed that the nanobowl substrate exhibited a substantially long plasmon dephasing time, exceeding 12 fs. Based on the spectral features of the near-field and far-field spectra, we found that optically dark plasmon mode is excited by the near-field illumination and only partly contributes to the long dephasing time observed. This fact indicates that the dephasing time is extended by some other mechanism in the periodic substrate. We revealed from this study that the enhanced optical fields induced in the nanobowl structure originate from the photosynergetic effect of the cavity mode and plasmon mode excited. In this study, we investigated the creation of mono crystalline diamond membranes for use in two-dimensional optical cavities. The creation method involves ion irradiation to create a buried layer of damaged material that is removed to leave a free-standing mono crystalline top layer. Simulations were used to determine the optimal parameters for irradiation, which were tested in experiments. Hydrogen ions were found to be the optimal ion species for irradiation, and long-term high-temperature annealing was beneficial in reducing ion-induced damage in the membrane. The resulting membranes, which were 300 nm thick, contained a high density of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy centers. Their optical and spin properties were analyzed. The findings of this study can be applied to the creation of diamond membranes hosting other color centers, with thicknesses matched to their respective fluorescence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zr-based MXenes recently attracted attention because of its experimental preparation showing temperature stability, mechanical strength, and promising energy, sensoric, and electrochemistry applications. However, necessary theoretical predictions at a precise/predictive level are complicated due to essential excitonic features and strong electron correlation (i.e., a necessity to go beyond standard density functional theory, DFT). Contrary to the prevailing focus on oxygen-terminated MXenes and standard predictions of other Zr-based MXenes as conductors, based on the hybrid DFT and GW many-body perturbational theory, we were able to find seven different semiconductors (five of them for their equilibrium geometry and two others under slight tensile biaxial strain) in the case of two- and three-layered Z r 2 C T 2 and Z r 3 C 2 T 2 configurations with various terminations (T = O, F, S, Cl). We observed semiconductor-to-conductor transition induced by strain in the majority of such Zr-based MXenes at an experimentally achievable strain range. Furthermore, using the Bethe–Salpeter equation (BSE), we demonstrated that selected semiconducting Zr-based MXenes possess high optical absorption efficiency (20%–30%) in the visible light range, underscoring their potential in photonic applications. The high sensitivity of Zr-based MXenes to external conditions and functionalization combined with the thermal stability makes the materials promising for applications at operational temperatures in electronic and optical technologies. Photocurrent measurements are widely used to study the intrinsic optoelectronic properties of semiconductors, such as photocarrier generation efficiency and carrier mobility, as well as evaluate the performance of optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells and photodetectors. Interferometric spectroscopy precisely measures optical properties and gathers optical spectra information on semiconductors. Consequently, photocurrent-based interferometric measurements, with high signal-to-noise ratios, high resolution, and broad frequency bandwidths, can probe the energy distributions of low-density defects and impurities and investigate charge transport in materials and devices. Here, we demonstrate that photocurrent interference spectroscopy reveals the intrinsic properties of solar-cell materials: bulk crystals of GaAs and halide perovskite, and thin films of halide perovskite and quantum dot. We show that homodyne interference spectroscopy of photocurrent can monitor low-density localized states in semiconductors and that it can be used in combination with other spectroscopy techniques, such as photoluminescence measurements, to provide a deep understanding of photocurrent generation processes. Furthermore, we show that heterodyne interference spectroscopy of photocurrent can be used to investigate the frequency dependence of material parameters, such as the dielectric constant, absorption coefficient, and reflectance. As an application, we used interference spectroscopy of photocurrent to show the impact of multiexcitons on the photoabsorption and photocarrier generation processes in quantum dot solar cells. Finally, we used it to reveal the distinctive spectral characteristics at the band edge of a halide perovskite, which is considered to be an exceptional solar-cell material with high energy conversion efficiency. Zinc tungstate is a semiconductor known for its favorable photocatalytic, photoluminescence, and scintillation properties, coupled with its relatively low cost, reduced toxicity, and high stability in biological and catalytic environments. In particular, zinc tungstate evinces scintillation properties, namely the ability to emit visible light upon absorption of energetic radiation such as x rays, which has led to applications not only as radiation detectors but also for biomedical applications involving the delivery of optical light to deep tissue, such as photodynamic therapy and optogenetics. Here, we report on the synthesis of zinc tungstate nanorods generated via an optimized but facile method, which allows for synthetic control over the aspect ratio of the as-synthesized anisotropic motifs via rational variation of the solution pH. We investigate the effect of aspect ratio on their resulting photoluminescent and radioluminescent properties. We further demonstrate the potential of these zinc tungstate nanorods for biomedical applications, such as photodynamic therapy for cancer treatment, by analyzing their toxicological profile within cell lines and neurons. In the presented work, the possibility of controlling laser generation using a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in a hybrid layered structure consisting of a thin metal layer (Ag), a layer of NLC doped with a light-absorbing dye, and a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) with a rectangular refractive index profile is theoretically studied. Spectral dependencies of the reflection, transmission, and absorption coefficients of light as well as the localization coefficient of the light field in NLC within the photonic bandgap of the DBR are obtained. Narrow dips in the reflection coefficient and peaks in the transmission coefficient are achieved due to the excitation of plasmons at the Ag-NLC interface. The dependence of the spectral position and magnitude of the plasmonic dips/peaks and the enhancement of the light field in the NLC medium on the thickness and orientation of the NLC layer as well as the impact of a light-absorbing dye doping are investigated. Theoretical calculations of the temporal dependencies of luminescence pulses for pumping pulses of different power settings (below, above, and at the threshold of laser generation) and different values of light absorption in the dye-doped NLC medium are performed, taking into account the peculiarities of the optical properties of the dye-doped NLC. In this paper, we study theoretically the electron and spectral properties of Ge 1 − x Sn x systems, including alloys, cubic- and spherical quantum dots. The single-particle electron and hole states are calculated within the s p 3 d 5 s ∗ tight-binding approach and used in further modeling of the optical properties. We systematically study the interplay of Sn-driven indirect–direct bandgap transition and the quantum confinement effect in systems of reduced dimensionality. We demonstrate the regime of sizes and compositions, where the ground state in Ge 1 − x Sn x quantum dots is optically active. Finally, we calculate absorbance spectra in experimentally relevant colloidal quantum dots and demonstrate satisfactory agreement with experimental data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of intriguing materials with tunable electronic and optical properties. In this work, we investigate the electronic and optical properties of COFs embedded with hBN and graphene. Our results demonstrate that graphene integration enhances the ultraviolet and visible light absorption of C 6 N 6 and B 6 O 6 monolayers, while charge transfer in all COF/graphene heterostructures leads to the formation of a built-in electric field. Furthermore, we show that incorporating hBN into B 6 O 6 and C 6 N 6 heterostructures enables control of their bandgap through an applied electric field, resulting in a semiconductor-to-metal transition under moderate electric field strengths. Additionally, B 6 O 6 /hBN exhibits suitable band edge alignment for photocatalytic water splitting. These findings provide valuable insights into the electronic and optical properties of COF heterostructures and their potential applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices. Quantum mechanical/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) methods are interesting to model the impact of a complex environment on the spectroscopic properties of a molecule. In this context, a FROm molecular dynamics to second harmonic Generation (FROG) code is a tool to exploit molecular dynamics trajectories to perform QM/MM calculations of molecular optical properties. FROG stands for "FROm molecular dynamics to second harmonic Generation" since it was developed for the calculations of hyperpolarizabilities. These are relevant to model non-linear optical intensities and compare them with those obtained from second harmonic scattering or second harmonic generation experiments. FROG's specificity is that it is designed to study simple molecular liquids, including solvents or mixtures, from the bulk to the surface. For the QM/MM calculations, FROG relies on the Dalton package: its electronic-structure models, response theory, and polarizable embedding schemes. FROG helps with the global workflow needed to deal with numerous QM/MM calculations: it permits the user to separate the system into QM and MM fragments, to write Dalton's inputs, to manage the submission of QM/MM calculations, to check whether Dalton's calculation finished successfully, and finally to perform averages on relevant QM observables. All molecules within the simulation box and several time steps are tackled within the same workflow. The platform is written in Python and installed as a package. Intermediate data such as local electric fields or individual molecular properties are accessible to the users in the form of Python object arrays. Zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid metal halides (HMHs) have emerged as a promising platform for exploring excitation-dependent multicolor luminescent materials owing to their diverse crystal structures and chemical compositions. Nevertheless, understanding the mechanism behind excitation-dependent emissions (EDEs) in 0D HMHs and achieving precise modulation remains challenging. In this work, the delicate regulations on the EDE of 0D (DMEDABr)4SnBr3I3 (DMEDA: N, N′-dimethylethylenediamine) with mixed halogens are achieved under low temperature and high pressure, respectively. The inhomogeneous halogen occupation at the atomic scale leads to the formation of Br-rich and I-rich SnX6 (X = Br, I) octahedra, which act as distinct luminescent centers upon photoexcitation. At low temperatures, the narrowed photoluminescence spectra could distinguish the individual emissions from different luminescent centers, resulting in a pronounced EDE of (DMEDABr)4SnBr3I3. In addition, the contraction and distortion of the luminescent SnX6 (X = Br, I) centers at high pressure further result in different degrees of emission shifts, giving rise to the gradual emergence and disappearance of EDE. We studied the origin of the vibrational signatures in the sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectrum of fibrillar collagen type I in the carbon–hydrogen stretching regime. For this purpose, we developed an all-reflective, laser-scanning SFG microscope with minimum chromatic aberrations and excellent retention of the polarization state of the incident beams. We performed detailed SFG measurements of aligned collagen fibers obtained from rat tail tendon, enabling the characterization of the magnitude and polarization-orientation dependence of individual tensor elements X ijk 2 of collagen's nonlinear susceptibility. Using the three-dimensional atomic positions derived from published crystallographic data of collagen type I, we simulated its X ijk 2 elements for the methylene stretching vibration and compared the predicted response with the experimental results. Our analysis revealed that the carbon–hydrogen stretching range of the SFG spectrum is dominated by symmetric stretching modes of methylene bridge groups on the pyrrolidine rings of the proline and hydroxyproline residues, giving rise to a dominant peak near 2942 cm−1 and a shoulder at 2917 cm−1. Weak asymmetric stretches of the methylene bridge group of glycine are observed in the region near 2870 cm−1, whereas asymmetric CH2-stretching modes on the pyrrolidine rings are found in the 2980 to 3030 cm−1 range. These findings help predict the protein's nonlinear optical properties from its crystal structure, thus establishing a connection between the protein structure and SFG spectroscopic measurements. Magic-sized nanocrystals (MSNCs) grow via jumps between very specific sizes. This discrete growth is a possible avenue toward monodisperse nanomaterials that are completely identical in size and shape. In spite of this potential, MSNCs have seen limited study and application due to their poor optical properties. Specifically, MSNCs are limited in their range of emission wavelengths and commonly exhibit poor photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). Here, we report silver doping of CdSe MSNCs as a strategy to improve the optical properties of MSNCs. Silver doping leads to controllable shifts in emission wavelength and significant increases in MSNC PLQYs. These results suggest that doped MSNCs are interesting candidates for displays or luminescent solar concentrators. Finally, we demonstrate that the doping process does not affect the magic size of our MSNCs, allowing further photophysical study of this class of nanomaterial. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Boron carbonitride (BCN) films containing hybridized bonds involving B, C, and N over wide compositional ranges enable an abundant variety of new materials, properties, and applications; however, their electronic performance is still limited by the presence of structural and electronic defects, yielding sluggish mobility and electrical conductivity. This work reports on mechanically stable BCN films and their corresponding optical and electronic properties. The ternary BCN films consisting of hybridized B–C–N bonds have been achieved by varying N2 flow by the radio frequency magnetron sputtering method. The BCN films show a bandgap value ranging from 3.32 to 3.82 eV. Hall effect measurements reveal an n-type conductivity with an improved hall mobility of 226 cm2/V s at room temperature for the optimal film. The n-BCN/p-Si heterojunctions exhibit a nonlinear rectifying characteristic, where the tunneling behavior dominates the injection regimes due to the density of defects, i.e., structural disorder and impurities. Our work demonstrates the tunable electrical properties of BCN/Si p–n diodes and, thus, is beneficial for the potential application in the fields of optics, optoelectronics, and electrics. J-aggregates, which are supramolecular assemblies that exhibit unique optical properties owing to their excitonic interactions, have potential applications in artificial light-harvesting systems and fluorescence biosensing. Although J-aggregates are formed in solution, in situ observations of their structures and behaviors in solution remain scarce. In this study, we investigated the J-aggregates of 1,1′-dioctadecyl-3,3,3′,3′-tetramethylindocarbocyanine perchlorate [DiIC18(3)] in methanol/water (M/W) binary solvents using fluorescence imaging as well as polarized absorption and fluorescence measurements to explore the relationship between their structure and macroscopic optical properties under static conditions. Fluorescence images revealed that the DiIC18(3) J-aggregates have fibrous structures in the M/W = 44/56 (v/v) binary solvent. We measured the polarization-angle dependence of the fluorescence intensity of the fibrous J-aggregates to determine the direction of their transition dipole moment. Furthermore, the J-band absorbance was dependent on the polarization angle of the linearly polarized incident light, even in the absence of an external force such as that generated by a flow or stirring, indicating that the J-aggregates "spontaneously" aligned in solution. We also monitored the time evolution of the degree of alignment of the fibrous J-aggregates, which revealed that the formation and elongation of the fibers induced their alignment, resulting in the observed macroscopic optical anisotropy in solution. A unique on-chip method for the direct correlation of optical properties, with atomic-scale chemical–structural characteristics for a single quantum dot (QD), is developed and utilized in various examples. This is based on performing single QD optical characterization on a modified glass substrate, followed by the extraction of the relevant region of interest by focused-ion-beam–scanning electron microscope processing into a lamella for high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) characterization with atomic scale resolution. The direct correlation of the optical response under an electric field with STEM analysis of the same particle allows addressing several single particle phenomena: first, the direct correlation of single QD photoluminescence (PL) polarization and its response to the external field with the QD crystal lattice alignment, so far inferred indirectly; second, the identification of unique yet rare few-QD assemblies, correlated directly with their special spectroscopic optical characteristics, serving as a guide for future designed assemblies; and third, the study on the effect of metal island growth on the PL behavior of hybrid semiconductor–metal nanoparticles, with relevance for their possible functionality in photocatalysis. SIGNIFICANCE: Spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) applies patterned near-infrared illumination to quantify the optical properties of subsurface tissue. The periocular region is unique due to its complex ocular adnexal anatomy. Although SFDI has been successfully applied to relatively flat in vivo tissues, regions that have significant height variations and curvature may result in optical property inaccuracies. AIM: We characterize the geometric impact of the periocular region on SFDI imaging reliability. APPROACH: SFDI was employed to measure the reduced scattering coefficient ( μ s ) and absorption coefficient ( μ a ) of the periocular region in a cast facial tissue-simulating phantom by capturing images along regions of interest (ROIs): inferior temporal quadrant (ITQ), inferior nasal quadrant (INQ), superior temporal quadrant (STQ), central eyelid margin (CEM), rostral lateral nasal bridge (RLNB), and forehead (FH). The phantom was placed on a chin rest and imaged nine times from an en face or side profile position, and the flat back of the phantom was measured 15 times. RESULTS: The measured μ a and μ s of a cast facial phantom are accurate when comparing the ITQ, INQ, STQ, and FH to its flat posterior surface. Paired t tests of ITQ, INQ, STQ, and FH μ a and μ s concluded that there is not enough evidence to suggest that imaging orientation impacted the measurement accuracy. Regions of extreme topographical variation, i.e., CEM and RLNB, did exhibit differences in measured optical properties. CONCLUSIONS: We are the first to evaluate the geometric implications of wide-field imaging along the periocular region using a solid tissue-simulating facial phantom. Results suggest that the ITQ, INQ, STQ, and FH of a generalized face have minimal impact on the SFDI measurement accuracy. Areas with heightened topographic variation exhibit measurement variability. Device and facial positioning do not appear to bias measurements. These findings confirm the need to carefully select ROIs when measuring optical properties along the periocular region.

Rare-earth titanate oxides are believed to be prospective functional materials for photocatalytic and photoluminescent applications because of their excellent optical properties and thermal stability of their physical properties. However, the relationships between optical properties and photoelectron trapping mechanisms are unclear. Herein, the structure, electronic, and optical properties of pyrochlore-structure Re2Ti2O7 (Re = Sm and Eu) were investigated using the first-principles approach with the Hubbard parameter U (GGA + U). The calculated bandgap is 2.5 eV for Sm2Ti2O7 and 2.4 eV for Eu2Ti2O7, which is in good agreement with the experimental observation. The results indicate that the strongly localized f states at the top of valence band are charge-trapping sites for photoexcitation of Re2Ti2O7, where electrons can absorb photon energy and transfer from the valence band to the conduction band, resulting in the photocatalytic and/or fluorescent effects in the visible and early UV regions. The important optical parameters, dielectric function ε (ω) , refractive index n (ω) , extinction coefficient k (ω) , reflectivity R (ω) , absorption coefficient I (ω) , optical conductivity σ (ω) , and electron energy-loss L (ω) were studied in detail, indicating that these optical parameters of Sm2Ti2O7 and Eu2Ti2O7 are insensitive to the ultra-violet (UV) radiation, but both Sm2Ti2O7 and Eu2Ti2O7 exhibit excellent optical properties in the visible and early UV regions. This work provides a clear understanding on the photoelectron trapping mechanism of pyrochlore-structure Re2Ti2O7, which will help to improve the photocatalytic and photoluminescent performance of Re2Ti2O7 and broaden their applications. Polymer-based ternary nanocomposites with tunable optical properties are the key components for optoelectronics applications. Here, we demonstrate the linear and nonlinear optical properties of polypyrrole (PPy) and its ternary composites with different concentrations of the MoS2–ZnO core–shell (ZnO@MoS2) heterostructure. The interesting observation of multiple excitons and their transportation through the interface of PPy and ZnO@MoS2 by using photoluminescence and fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy was studied. Furthermore, the third-order nonlinear optical properties of all samples were also measured by employing the z-scan technique at an excitation wavelength of 532 nm. The reverse saturable absorption of pure PPy was switched to saturable absorption after the addition of ZnO@MoS2 at the uniform linear transmittance. These ternary composites with good nonlinear responses provide an option for the development of high-performance nonlinear optical devices and open a new path for the future development of ternary systems in the optical fields. This review concentrates on the microstructure of InxGa1−xN layers and quantum wells (QWs) in relation to their optical properties. The microstructure of InxGa1−xN, with a constant In(x) concentration, shifts with layer thickness. Only layers below 100 nm for x = 0.1 are nearly defect-free. A photoluminescence peak is observed at 405 nm, in line with ∼10% In, suggesting band-edge luminescence. Layers with greater thickness and In content present a corrugated surface with numerous structural defects, including V-defects, causing redshifts and multi-peaks in photoluminescence up to 490 nm. These defects, resembling those in GaN, lead to a corrugated sample surface. Atomic force microscopy shows a 3.7-fold larger corrugation in samples with 20 QWs compared to those with 5 QWs measured on 2 × 2 μm2 areas. Like in GaN, dual growth on different crystallographic planes results in varied QW thicknesses, influencing optical traits of devices made from InxGa1−xN layers. The purpose of this review and the chosen subject is to highlight the significant contribution of Wladek Walukiewicz and his group to the current research on the properties of InxGa1−xN, which are crucial alloys in the field of optoelectronics. N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) iridium(III) complexes are considered as promising candidates for blue emitters in organic light-emitting diodes. They can play the roles of the emitter as well as of electron and hole transporters in the same emission layer. We investigate optical transitions in such complexes with account of geometry and electronic structure changes upon excitation or charging and exciton transfer between the complexes from first principles. It is shown that excitation of NHC iridium complexes is accompanied by a large reorganization energy ∼0.7 eV and a significant loss in the oscillator strength, which should lead to low exciton diffusion. Calculations with account of spin–orbit coupling reveal a small singlet–triplet splitting ∼0.1 eV, whereas the oscillator strength for triplet excitations is found to be an order of magnitude smaller than for the singlet ones. The contributions of the Förster and Dexter mechanisms are analyzed via the explicit integration of transition densities. It is shown that for typical distances between emitter complexes in the emission layer, the contribution of the Dexter mechanism should be negligible compared to the Förster mechanism. At the same time, the ideal dipole approximation, although giving the correct order of the exciton coupling, fails to reproduce the result taking into account spatial distribution of the transition density. For charged NHC complexes, we find a number of optical transitions close to the emission peak of the blue emitter with high exciton transfer rates that can be responsible for exciton–polaron quenching. The second order cumulant method offers a promising pathway to predicting optical properties in condensed phase systems. It allows for the computation of linear absorption spectra from excitation energy fluctuations sampled along molecular dynamics (MD) trajectories, fully accounting for vibronic effects, direct solute–solvent interactions, and environmental polarization effects. However, the second order cumulant approximation only guarantees accurate line shapes for energy gap fluctuations obeying Gaussian statistics. A third order correction has recently been derived but often yields unphysical spectra or divergent line shapes for moderately non-Gaussian fluctuations due to the neglect of higher order terms in the cumulant expansion. In this work, we develop a corrected cumulant approach, where the collective effect of neglected higher order contributions is approximately accounted for through a dampening factor applied to the third order cumulant term. We show that this dampening factor can be expressed as a function of the skewness and kurtosis of energy gap fluctuations and can be parameterized from a large set of randomly sampled model Hamiltonians for which exact spectral line shapes are known. This approach is shown to systematically remove unphysical contributions in the form of negative absorbances from cumulant spectra in both model Hamiltonians and condensed phase systems sampled from MD and dramatically improves over the second order cumulant method in describing systems exhibiting Duschinsky mode mixing effects. We successfully apply the approach to the coumarin-153 dye in toluene, obtaining excellent agreement with experiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Laser lift-off (LLO) is an important step in the processing chain of nitride-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs), as it enables the transfer of LEDs from the growth substrate to a more suitable carrier. A distinctive feature of LLO with ultrashort pulses is the ability to use either above- or below-bandgap radiation, since nonlinear absorption becomes relevant for ultrashort pulses. This study addresses the differences in the absorption scheme for below- and above-bandgap radiation and investigates the electrical and optical properties of InGaN/GaN LEDs before and after LLO with 347 and 520 nm laser light via current–voltage and power- as well as temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements. LLO could be successfully realized with both wavelengths. The threshold fluence required for LLO is about a factor of two larger for 520 nm compared to that for 347 nm. Furthermore, an increase in leakage current by several orders of magnitude and a significant decrease in efficiency with laser fluence are observed for below-bandgap radiation. In contrast, leakage current hardly increases and efficiency is less dependent on the laser fluence for samples lifted with 347 nm. This degradation is ascribed to the absorption of laser light in the active region, which facilitates a modification of the local defect landscape. The effect is more severe for below-bandgap radiation, as more laser light penetrates deep into the structure and reaches the active region. Ultimately, we show that LEDs lifted with ultrashort laser pulses can exhibit good quality, making ultrashort pulse LLO a viable alternative to conventional LLO with nanosecond pulses. For large plasmonic nanoparticles, retardation effects become important once their length becomes comparable to the wavelength of light. However, most models do not incorporate retardation effects due to the high computational cost of solving for the optical properties of large atomistic electrodynamics systems. In this work, we derive and implement a recursive fast multipole method (FMM) in Cartesian coordinates that includes retardation effects. In this method, higher-order electrodynamic interaction tensors used for the FMM are calculated recursively, thus greatly reducing the implementation complexity of the model. This method allows for solving of the optical properties of large atomistic nanoparticles with controlled accuracy; in practice, taking the expansion to the fifth order provides a good balance of accuracy and computational time. Finally, we study the effects retardation has on the near- and far-field properties of large plasmonic nanoparticles with over a million atoms using this method. We specifically focus on nanorods and their dimers, which are known to generate highly confined fields in their junctions. In the future, this method can be applied to simulations in which accurate near-field properties are required, such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The discovery of strontium niobate (SNO) as a potentially new transparent electrode has generated much interest due to its implications in various optoelectronic devices. Pristine SNO exhibits exceptionally low resistivity (∼10−4 Ω cm) at room temperature. However, this low resistivity occurs due to large number of carrier concentration in the system, which significantly affects its optical transparency (∼40%) in the visible range and hinders its practical applications as a transparent electrode. Here, we show that modulating the growth kinetics via oxygen manipulation is a feasible approach to achieve the desired optoelectronic properties. In particular, epitaxial (001) SNO thin films are grown on (001) lanthanum aluminate by pulsed laser deposition at different oxygen partial pressures and are shown to improve the optical transparency from 40% to 72% (λ = 550 nm) at a marginal cost of electrical resistivity from 2.8 to 8.1 × 10−4 Ω cm. These changes are directly linked with the multi-valence Nb-states, as evidenced by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, the defect-engineered SNO films exhibit multiple electronic phases that include pure metallic, coexisting metal-semiconducting-like, and pure semiconducting-like phases as evidenced by low-temperature electrical transport measurements. The intriguing metal-semiconducting coexisting phase is thoroughly analyzed using both perpendicular and angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements, further supported by a density functional theory-based first-principles study and the observed feature is explained by the quantum correction to the conductivity. Overall, this study shows an exciting avenue for altering the optical and transport properties of SNO epitaxial thin films for their practical use as a next-generation transparent electrode. The incorporation of boron into a diamond lattice holds the potential to advance X-ray optics, offering the capability to manipulate various parameters of the lattice. This includes enhancing near-infrared absorption relative to pure diamond, thereby enabling Q-switchable optics. The use of MeV boron implantation emerges as a promising method for precisely doping the diamond lattice. However, for these optics to function effectively as Bragg-reflecting mirrors, ion implantation must be executed with meticulous attention to maintaining a strain-free, perfect diamond lattice. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of utilizing a 9 MeV ion beam for high energy boron implantation. Different areas of a high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) diamond sample were subjected to irradiation with 9 MeV Boron ions, ranging in fluences from 5×1015 to 2.5×1016ions/cm2. Following boron implantation, high-temperature vacuum annealing was performed to restore the diamond lattice. Our assessment utilized X-ray rocking curve imaging, surface profilometry, and micro-Raman spectroscopy, with additional observations on near-infrared transmission properties. Our measurement of high-quality Bragg reflection through X-ray rocking curve imaging, sensitive to implantation-induced strain and defects, served as an key diagnostic for the effectiveness of this ion-implanted sample as a Bragg-reflecting optic.

The development of large-scale, high-quality ferroelectric semiconductor nanowire arrays with interesting light-emitting properties can address limitations in traditional wide-bandgap ferroelectrics, thus serving as building blocks for innovative device architectures and next-generation high-density optoelectronics. Here, we investigate the optical properties of ferroelectric CsGeX3 (X = Br, I) halide perovskite nanowires that are epitaxially grown on muscovite mica substrates by vapor phase deposition. Detailed structural characterizations reveal an incommensurate heteroepitaxial relationship with the mica substrate. Furthermore, photoluminescence that can be tuned from yellow-green to red emissions by varying the halide composition demonstrates that these nanowire networks can serve as platforms for future optoelectronic applications. In addition, the room-temperature ferroelectricity and ferroelectric domain structures of these nanowires are characterized using second harmonic generation (SHG) polarimetry. The combination of room-temperature ferroelectricity with photoluminescence in these nanowire arrays unlocks new avenues for the design of novel multifunctional materials.

The high-pressure synthesis of double-core nanothreads derived from pseudo-stilbene crystals represents a captivating approach to isolate within the thread chromophores or functional groups without altering its mechanical properties. These entities can be effectively utilized to finely tune optical properties or as preferential sites for functionalization. Bibenzyl, being isostructural with other members of this class, represents the ideal system for building co-crystals from which we can synthesize double-core nanothreads wherein bridging chromophores, such as the azo or ethylene moieties, are embedded in the desired concentration within a fully saturated environment. To achieve this, a critical step is the preliminary characterization of the high-pressure behavior of crystalline bibenzyl. We report here an accurate investigation performed through state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques, Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction up to 40 GPa. Our findings reveal a strongly anisotropic compression of the crystal, which determines, at pressures between 1 and 2 GPa, consistent modifications of the vibrational spectrum, possibly related to a torsional distortion of the molecules. A phase transition is detected between 9 and 10 GPa, leading to a high pressure phase where, above 24 GPa, the nanothread formation is observed. However, the observed reaction was limited in extent and required significantly higher pressures in comparison to other members of the pseudo-stilbene family. This comprehensive study is imperative in laying the foundation for future endeavors, aiming to synthesize double-core nanothreads from pseudo-stilbene crystals, and provides crucial insights into the high-pressure behavior and phase transitions of crystalline bibenzyl. In order to greatly improve the photocatalytic properties, corn-like ZnO/ZnS heterojunctions with a particle size of about 60–71 nm have been synthesized by the solvothermal method and the subsequent sulfuration process. A declining trend is found for the specific surface area with increasing sulfuration time. The corn-like ZnO/ZnS heterojunctions exhibit good photocatalytic properties. With increasing sulfuration time, the degradation rate increases first and then decreases. The best degradation rate is observed for the heterojunction sulfurated for 90 min. The strong broad luminescence band is extremely beneficial to the absorption of visible light by multiphoton process. In addition, the energy transfer from ZnS to ZnO contributes to charge separation, forming a type-II heterojunction mechanism. After one cycle of photocatalytic process, except that corns become more broken, variation of particle size and shape is very small. The degradation speed of RhB after a second cycle of photocatalytic process is slower than the first one except when using the sample sulfurated for 360 min. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Graphene has been a subject of great interest not only due to its fascinating properties but also for being the pioneer among 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials. Hexagonal boron nitride, an isomorph of graphene and a wide gap insulator, is commonly referred to as white graphene. The combination of the insulating hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) with other crystals to form heterostructures provide a path for engineering and manipulating new physics and device properties. In this work, we investigate the vdW heterostructures formed by assembling h-BN and lizardite, a clay-mineral that is abundant in nature and represents the most stable polymorph of the serpentine family. The optoelectronic properties of three distinct heterostructures are presented to discern the characteristics of the systems. We observe that unlike lizardite and h-BN which are insulators, all the three heterostructures exhibit a semiconducting nature. The direct gap of the heterostructure in which two h-BN sheets are simultaneously placed above and below the octahedral and tetrahedral layers also makes it relevant for optoelectronic devices. Additionally, unlike lizardite, the heterostructures demonstrate a polarization-dependent optical properties. The study of the assembled structures combining the clay-mineral with h-BN not only widens the spectrum of vdW heterostructures but also explores their potential within the context of the serpentine family. Periodic density functional theory was employed to investigate the impact of chemical modifications on the properties of π-conjugated acenedithiophene molecular crystals. Here, we highlight the importance of the β-methylthionation effect, the position of the sulfur atoms of the thiacycle group and their size, and the number of central benzene rings in the chemical modification strategy. Our results show that the introduction of the methylthio groups at the β-positions of the thiophene and the additional benzene ring at the center of the BDT crystal structure are a promising strategy to improve the performance of organic semiconductors, as observed experimentally. We found that β-MT-ADT exhibits large charge carrier mobility, which is in good agreement with the experimental results and comparable to that of rubrene. In addition, the electronic and optical properties of these ambipolar materials suggest promising performances with β-MT-ADT > ADT > β -MT-NDT > NDT > BEDT-BDT > β -MT-BDT > BDT. Moreover, functionalization with thiacycle-fused sulfur atoms of different sizes and numbers improve the properties of BDT but is still less efficient than the methylthionation effect. The luminescence efficiency of AlxGa1−xN quantum dots (QDs) and quantum wells (QWs), buried in AlN cladding layers and emitting in the ultraviolet range between 234 and 310 nm, has been investigated. The growth and optical properties have been done using similar aluminum composition (varying from 0.4 to 0.75) for both QDs and QWs. In order to compare as much as possible the optical properties, the QWs were fabricated with a growth time tuned such that the QW width is similar to the average height of the QDs. The photoluminescence (PL) showed emission ranging from 4 to 5.4 eV, putting into evidence differences in terms of full width at half maximum, PL intensity, and asymmetry of the line shape between QDs and QWs. The results show shorter wavelengths and a slightly narrower PL linewidth for QWs. To determine the light emission dependence with the electric field direction in the crystal, the evolutions of the emission diagrams for all samples were recorded along two orthogonal directions, namely, the "in-plane" (growth) and the "on-side" directions, from which the light emission was collected. For the whole QDs and QWs samples' series, the shapes of the emission diagram indicate emission in both in-plane and on-side directions, as evidenced by intra-valence band mixings caused by strain effects combined with the anisotropic Coulomb interactions that are particularly contributing to the polarization at wavelengths below 260 nm. Furthermore, the degree of polarization, determined for each sample, showed good agreement with results from the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
