Purpose: The purpose of this survey was to create a list of essential historical and contemporary readings for undergraduate and graduate students in the field of exercise physiology. Methods: Fifty-two exercise physiologists/sport scientists served as referees, and each nominated ∼25 papers for inclusion in the list. In total, 396 papers were nominated by the referees. This list was then sent back to the referees, with the instructions to nominate the "100 essential papers in sports and exercise physiology." Results: The referees cast 4722 votes. The 100 papers with the highest number of votes received 51% (2406) of the total number of votes. A total of 37 papers in the list of "100 essential papers" were published >50 years ago, and 63 papers were published since 1973. Conclusions: This list of essential studies will provide a perspective on contemporary studies, the "giant's shoulders" to enable young scholars to "see further" or to understand where they have "come from." This compilation is also meant to impress on students that, given the (lack of) technology available in the past, some of the early science required enormous intuitive leaps on the part of historical scientists. This systematic meta-review evaluated the effects of exercise with and without protein interventions on muscle strength and function in older adults with sarcopenic obesity. PubMed, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Scopus, and SPORTDiscus databases were searched through February 2021 for relevant systematic reviews and meta-analyses with aerobic, resistance, and/or combined training interventions with and without protein supplementation in older adults ≥ 65 years with sarcopenic obesity. This meta-review showed that exercise with and without protein supplementation improved body composition (i.e., decreased percentage body fat) and functional outcomes (i.e., gait speed and grip strength). Because the current literature is limited, determining the effects of exercise and combined protein supplementation in this population requires further investigation. In the meantime, protein recommendations should align with general sarcopenia recommendations. Angiomyxomas, also known as vascular myxolipomas, are a rare type of soft tissue tumor characterized by the proliferation of adipose tissue within a myxoid stroma accompanied by multiple vascular channels. They represent a distinct variant of lipomas and require differentiation from other benign and malignant lipoma subtypes. Despite their rarity, only a few cases of angiomyxolipoma have been documented in medical literature. We present a case of angiomyxolipoma occurring in the cheek of a 40-year-old female patient who presented with a long-standing history of swelling on the left side of her face. Histopathological examination revealed alternating nests of myxoid and adipose tissue containing dilated blood vessels, which confirmed the diagnosis of angiomyxolipoma. This case underscores the importance of recognizing and accurately diagnosing rare soft tissue tumors like angiomyxolipoma to guide appropriate management and follow-up care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: This study explores the utilization and impact of Chat GPT-3, a state-of-the-art AI language model, among on-call radiology residents and experienced radiology consultants. The objective is to understand how Chat GPT-3 influences clinical practice, communication, and patient care within the dynamic and time-sensitive realm of radiology. METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining surveys and in-depth interviews with radiology residents and consultants across various healthcare institutions. The participants provided information about their experience with Chat GPT-3, including its frequency of use, purposes, perceived advantages, and limitations. Qualitative data were analyzed thematically, and quantitative data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis. RESULTS: The findings demonstrate that Chat GPT-3 has become an integral tool for on-call radiology professionals, aiding in image interpretation, report generation, and access to up-to-date medical literature. Participants reported that Chat GPT-3 enhanced the speed and accuracy of their radiological assessments, particularly in complex and time-sensitive cases. Moreover, it facilitated seamless communication with colleagues, including referring physicians, and improved the overall quality of patient care. However, challenges such as concerns over data privacy and occasional inaccuracies in responses were noted. CONCLUSION: Chat GPT-3 is increasingly becoming a valuable asset for on-call radiology residents and consultants, transforming radiological practice by accelerating decision-making, enhancing collaboration, and improving patient outcomes. Despite some limitations, the technology's role in radiology appears promising, suggesting a need for further research and guidelines to optimize its integration and ensure patient data security. Melanomas on the dorsum of the hand are exceedingly rare, with limited documentation in medical literature. This report presents seven cases of dorsal hand and finger melanomas, encompassing patients from Australia, New Zealand and Turkey, predominantly women with a mean age of 53 years. The majority were invasive, with a mean Breslow thickness of 1.1 mm and none were of lentigo maligna subtype. The rarity of dorsal hand melanomas prompts speculation into potential protective factors unique to this site, challenging existing knowledge on melanoma aetiology and sun exposure. In education, the Education Resource Information Center (ERIC) is a major database. Medical education, situated between medicine and education, has no dedicated database of its own. Many medical education researchers use MEC, some use ERIC and some do not.We performed a descriptive analysis using search strategies to retrieve medical education references from MEC and ERIC. ERIC references which were duplicates with MEC references were removed. Unique ERIC references were tallied.Between 1977 and 2022, MEC has 359,354 unique references relevant to medical education. ERIC provided 3925 unique references for the same period, all of which would be missed by searching only MEC. The mean unique ERIC medical education references per year for all 46 years is 85 (SD = ±29), or 119 (SD = ±15) for the last 10 years from 2013 to 2022.ERIC consistently offered a small yet significant number of unique references relevant to medical education for decades. We recommend the use of ERIC for medical education research when comprehensive literature searches are required, such as in systematic reviews, scoping reviews, evidence synthesis, or guideline development. Introduction: Garlic (Allium sativum L.), has been cultivated in various countries and is valued for its medicinal and culinary properties. It contains bioactive compounds such as phenolic compounds, organic sulfides, polysaccharides, and saponins, with allicin being a particularly studied compound. These compounds have been shown to possess antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperlipidemic and antihypertensive effects. Garlic has been used for over 5000 years as a curative plant and has potential applications in food science, medicine, and nutraceuticals. Aim of the Study: The aim of the study is to provide a comprehensive review of the overall impact of Allium sativum L. on human health and in order to draw attention to the benefits of regular consumption. Materials and methods: A comprehensive review of scientific and medical literature was conducted utilizing PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Searching terms were: garlic, Allium sativum L., garlic antiinflammatory, garlic anticancer, garlic health effects. Conclusion: Allium sativum L. is associated with a comprehensive range of beneficial effects on the human body. These include anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, positive influence on lipid profile, cardiovascular system, and the anticancer activity among others by stimulation of tumor apoptosis. However, prior research has made limited attempts to holistically summarize existing knowledge on the application of digital assessments in medical education through literature reviews. This paper presents a scoping review of previous studies on the application of digital assessments in medical education.The following databases were searched: PubMed, Embase (Ovid), Scopus, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Web of Science, in February of 2024. The inclusion criteria for the review were: (1) articles that investigated digital assessments in medical education, (2) presented original research, (3) were in English, and (4) were published from the year 2012 forward.Of the 1553 articles identified, we analyzed 89 articles from recognized digital databases. The review results provide a comprehensive understanding of prior research related to the use of digital assessments in medical education, including information on existing studies, attitudes, benefits, and challenges, as well as recommendations for the implementation of digital assessments in the field of medical education.This review reports the current literature surrounding digital assessment applications in medical education, highlighting predominantly positive perceptions and significant advantages. While challenges persist, the proposed recommendations offer guidance in how to navigate these issues towards future initiatives that facilitate its appropriate research and adoption and harness its capabilities to enrich the learning and assessment processes in medicine. Introduction: Chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR-Ts) targeting CD19 represent a significant advance in treatment for patients with relapsed/refractory B-cell malignancies. Although a significant minority of recipients are women during their reproductive years, there is a paucity of data regarding pregnancy and neonatal outcomes in women previously treated with CAR-T. This is important as maternal T cells are known to cross the placenta and into breastmilk during pregnancy and breastfeeding, respectively. Case Presentation: Here we present two successful pregnancies following CAR-T therapy where both neonates were initially breastfed. These represent the first cases of neonates born following CAR-T therapy comprehensively described in medical literature. Conclusion: Pregnancy following CAR-T therapy does not appear to be associated with adverse neonatal outcomes. Further work is required to delineate the outcomes in this population. Within the paramedic sphere, simulation is valuable in providing exposure to high‐acuity, low occurrence incidents encountered rarely in practice, affording unique educational opportunities. Recognising this importance, this scoping review seeks to establish the contemporaneous evidence base for the use of simulation‐based assessment in the context of paramedic education, systematically map the research done in this area and consider the implications for future educational programmes.A scoping review of peer, and non‐peer reviewed literature across a broad range of medical literature databases for both published and grey material utilising previously published search filters for the paramedic field. The review was conducted aligned to the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews checklist. Studies were selected based on relevance to the research question.Twenty four unique papers were identified, filtered via the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria to five included papers. The application of forward snowballing methodology revealed three additional papers included for appraisal. Thematic analysis of the eight papers revealed the domains of assessment acceptability and assessment validity as key considerations for the design and use of simulation‐based assessment in the field.Simulation‐based assessment has a role in paramedic education; additional research is necessary to empirically establish the validity and reliability of the modality in the field. The genus Prototheca (alga) comprises a unique group of achlorophyllic saprotrophic and mammalian pathogen species. Despite its rare occurrence in humans and animals, protothecosis is considered an emerging clinical entity with relevance in immunocompromised patients. In this study, the characterization of spherical structures with endospores recovered from a blood culture in an HIV patient was investigated using phenotypic and molecular methodologies. On 2% Sabouraud dextrose agar, the isolate displayed morphological and biochemical characteristics found on isolates identified as Prototheca wickerhamii. To validate these analyses, molecular phylogeny of the internal transcript space (ITS) partial gene confirmed the identity of the isolate as P. wickerhamii. This is the first case of systemic human protothecosis in Brazil. The present case of human Prototheca and those reported in the medical literature highlight the need for novel methodologies to identify pathogenic algae in the clinical laboratory, improving in this way the diagnosis and treatment of this group of neglected pathogens. Author summary: Species of Prototheca are achlorophyllous algae widespread in aquatic and wet environments, exhibiting the surprising ability to act as a pathogen of mammals, including humans. With no tendency to self-resolve and the potential for fatal outcomes in immunocompromised patients, protothecosis has emerged as a concerning infection in the last decades. In this study, we identified a Prototheca isolate from a fatal case of systemic protothecosis, using traditional assays, and phylogenetic analysis. Traditional assays identified the pathogen as Prototheca wickerhamii, findings later confirmed by molecular methodologies. Because of its unique classification, clinical diagnosis and laboratory identification are challenging. For instance, the macro morphology of the colonies on culture mimics those in Candida species, a fact contributing to delay therapy. Therefore, the accurate identification and characterization of clinical isolates using molecular methodologies may have a positive impact on the diagnosis and treatment of this unusual infection. Purpose: Anterior plagiocephaly (AP), secondary to isolated frontosphenoidal synostosis (IFS), represents one of the rarest forms of craniosynostosis documented in medical literature. Therefore, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the long-term (> 2 years) postoperative outcomes of this minor suture synostosis. Methods: This study presents the long-term outcomes of two patients previously treated for IFS, detailing their clinical, imaging, and postoperative characteristics. Additionally, a systematic review was conducted following PRISMA criteria to summarize existing literature on the topic. The review specifically focuses on long-term aesthetic outcomes, reoperation rates, and complications following surgical intervention for IFS. Results: Four articles encompassing 12 patients were included in the systematic review. The review highlights clinical features, postoperative complications, reoperation rates, and long-term aesthetic outcomes. The mean age at surgery was 17.5 months (range 9.5–24 months), with an average age at diagnosis of 9.3 months (range 6–10 months). Fronto-orbital advancement was the predominant surgical approach described across all cases. The reoperation rate among patients was 16.6%, with only two cases reporting postoperative complications. In one of our cases, an intraoperative CT scan was utilized to illustrate real-time improvement in frontal bone alignment according to the surgical plan, which significantly contributed to positive long-term clinical outcomes observed during a follow-up period exceeding 24 months. Conclusion: IFS, is a rare minor suture synostosis, significantly affects the aesthetic appearance of the forehead and necessitates consideration in the management of AP cases. Surgical intervention has shown minimal reoperation rates and excellent long-term prognosis. Many practices available for use in health service psychology are ineffective or harmful. How we describe these practices is important to scientific discourse and science communication with policy-makers and the general public. The label "pseudoscience" is typically applied in these cases, though the meaning of pseudoscience varies widely creating a quagmire for transparent and accurate communication. To clarify this issue, we review several prominent definitions of pseudoscience as well as consider how the term is used amongst psychology scholars and science-communicators. We define two additional terms adapted from the medical literature, contemporary and alternative psychotherapies and low-value practices, and discuss their strengths and limitations. Finally, we recommend the broader category of low-value practices for use due to its definitional clarity, lack of competing definitions, and potential for clarifying research programs. Objectives: Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a predominantly male illness. Although the rate of female patients increased, a knowledge gap exists in the medical literature regarding gender‐based differences. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: Adult patients treated for laryngeal SCC in a tertiary medical centre between 2006 and 2020. Data were collected on demographics, clinical presentation, treatment modalities, disease recurrence and survival status. Participants: Two hundred ninety‐one patients with laryngeal SCC, 50 (17.2%) females and 241 (82.8%) males. Main Outcome Measures: Disease‐specific survival (DSS), overall survival (OS) and disease‐free survival (DFS), as well as differences in disease characteristics and treatment modalities. Results: Tumour subsites differed significantly between females and males (36% vs. 19.5% supraglottic, 62% vs. 80.5% glottic and 2% vs. 0% subglottic, respectively; p = 0.006). Females were diagnosed at younger ages (61.7 ± 10.58 vs. 65.87 ± 11.11 years, p = 0.016) and advanced‐stage disease (58% vs. 39.4%, p = 0.018). Females were treated with combined modalities at higher rates (36% vs. 54.8% for single modality, p = 0.031). DSS rates did not differ between genders (log‐rank p = 0.12). Despite being diagnosed at more advanced disease stages, females demonstrated prolonged median OS compared to males (130.17 vs. 106.17 months, log‐rank p = 0.017). No significant differences in DFS were observed (log‐rank p = 0.32). In a multivariate Cox proportional hazards model, male gender remained an independent negative OS predictor (HR = 2.08; CI, 1.10–3.96; p = 0.025), along with increasing age (HR = 1.06; CI, 1.04–1.09; p < 0.001) and advanced disease stage (HR = 1.7; CI, 1.08–2.67; p = 0.023). The subject of this article are patients with ankylosing spondylitis and the possibilities of improving the control of morning pain and stiffness characteristic of the disease by applying the principles of chronopharmacology. Chronopharmacology uses knowledge of biological rhythms to develop an optimal pharmacotherapeutic plan. The aim was to study and summarize the modern medical literature on the subject by means of the methods of analysis of the information obtained by keywords in specialized electronic medical databases. In conclusion, it can be said that the results of the study of the available literature show the importance of applying the principles of chronopharmacology to achieve optimal pain control, manage morning stiffness and improve therapeutic results in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. The exponential growth of biomedical literature necessitates advanced methods for Literature-Based Discovery (LBD) to uncover hidden, meaningful relationships and generate novel hypotheses. This research integrates Large Language Models (LLMs), particularly transformer-based models, to enhance LBD processes. Leveraging LLMs' capabilities in natural language understanding, information extraction, and hypothesis generation, we propose a framework that improves the scalability and precision of traditional LBD methods. Our approach integrates LLMs with semantic enhancement tools, continuous learning, domain-specific fine-tuning, and robust data cleansing processes, enabling automated analysis of vast text and identification of subtle patterns. Empirical validations, including scenarios on the effects of garlic on blood pressure and nutritional supplements on health outcomes, demonstrate the effectiveness of our LLM-based LBD framework in generating testable hypotheses. This research advances LBD methodologies, fosters interdisciplinary research, and accelerates discovery in the biomedical domain. Additionally, we discuss the potential of LLMs in drug discovery, highlighting their ability to extract and present key information from the literature. Detailed comparisons with traditional methods, including Swanson's ABC model, highlight our approach's advantages. This comprehensive approach opens new avenues for knowledge discovery and has the potential to revolutionize research practices. The sudden spread of the monkeypox virus has been accompanied by an increase in the scientific interest in the virus. More than 1,400 PubMed-indexed documents have been authored by about 5,800 unique authors, averaging around 120 publications per month. This sheer rise in the number led us to explore the content published in the literature. We discovered more than 30% of the documents are Quantitative Productivity (QP) i.e., papers that illustrate the emerging trends of parachute concerns, modified salami tactics, cyclic recycling, and excellence in redundancy. In addition, we found few common hyper-prolific authors previously identified in the COVID-19 literature. Further, we share our experience in publishing monkeypox literature and highlight the growing readership and citation interest in editorials, commentaries, and correspondences that were thought to be uncitable in the medical literature. As long as the scientific community and public demand, the supply of such papers will continue, with no responsibility on the authors, journals, or the reader. Since overhauling the current system is an arduous task, we propose the optimization of existing retrieval services that would selectively filter documents based on article type (requires standardization of definitions) to dilute the crowding out effects of quantitative productivity. Background: There are limited comprehensive descriptions of character strengths and virtues specific to the professional identity formation of medical students in the literature. This absence of a satisfactory summation of virtues has stimulated us to attempt a conceptual framework utilizing a tripartite taxonomy. This taxonomy reflects recent interest in and importance of justice and care of the self. Methods: Our taxonomy is grounded within a perennial tradition of medical ethics that focuses on the moral "excellences" or "virtues" that form the character of a good doctor, as acquired over time within a community of practice. Character refers to the whole set of excellences of a practitioner as a member of the medical community. Results: We propose a tripartite taxonomical classification of virtues as Other-Regarding Virtues, Self-Regarding Virtues, and Equal-Regarding Virtues. Though synergistic, each category is readily distinguishable with regard to a fundamental mindset. To thrive, a medical student must develop character strengths that encompass all three categories. Conclusions: Our goal in introducing this tripartite taxonomy is to provide a framework of virtues to contribute to the definition of professional identity. We envision the taxonomy will provide a structure for professional identity formation curriculum development and organize the ever-elusive assessment of professionalism in learners. This taxonomy can also be viewed as an aspirational roadmap for practicing physicians and educators, and as a compass for their daily consciousness. Background: Hydatid disease, also known as echinococcosis, is an endemic parasitic infection, most commonly caused by Echinococcus granulosus. It may affect any organ resulting in the formation of hydatid cysts, but most frequently involves liver and lungs. Hydatid cyst arising primarily from axilla is an extremely rare manifestation of this condition, with only a few cases reported in medical literature. Case presentation: Here we present the case of a 32-year-old Indian male farmer, who presented with a painless, slow-growing mass in the left axillary region of 8 months duration. Preoperative imaging led us to the diagnosis of primary axillary hydatid cyst, with no other associated cysts or masses anywhere else in the body. Following antihelmintic therapy, the cyst was surgically excised without rupture. The diagnosis was further confirmed by macroscopic and histopathological examination. Conclusion: This case report highlights the importance of considering hydatid cyst in the differential diagnosis of palpable masses in the axillary region, especially in regions where the disease is endemic. Objective Patients and Methods Results Conclusions To investigate the outcomes of ureteroscopy and lasertripsy in lower pole renal stones <2 cm when treated in situ compared to displacement to the upper pole.Using the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE)/PubMed, the Excerpta Medica dataBASE (EMBASE), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), the Cochrane Library, and Clinicaltrials.gov we identified adult population, English language, studies published until March 2023 comparing surgical outcomes and stone‐free rates (SFRs) in relation to lower pole stones <2 cm managed in situ vs those displaced (International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews [PROSPERO] identifier: CRD42023432750). Analysis was performed using R with the ‘meta’ package. Bias analysis was performed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool for randomised trials and the Newcastle–Ottawa scale for observational studies. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to ascertain the certainty of evidence.A total of five studies were included, comprising two retrospective cohort studies, three randomised trials, with a total of 408 patients. Meta‐analysis demonstrated SFRs are significantly higher in those patients undergoing displacement vs those managed in situ (risk ratio 1.21, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.10–1.34, P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in complication rates. Operative time was significantly longer in the displacement group (mean difference 5.62 min, 95% CI 0.40–10.83 min; P = 0.03). Overall risk of bias was moderate. Certainty of evidence was moderate for stone‐free status, and very low for all other outcomes.This systematic review and meta‐analysis demonstrates that for lower pole stones <2 cm displacement strategies have significantly higher SFRs than treatment in situ, with no significant difference in complications. Objective Methods Results Conclusion To evaluate the safety, efficacy, tolerability, and cost‐effectiveness of bedside or office‐based ureteric stent insertion.Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses‐Protocols (PRISMA‐P) and A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2 guidelines, we searched PubMed/the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), the Excerpta Medica dataBASE (EMBASE), Google Scholar, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and Dimensions for English‐language studies from 1978 to April 2023. Inclusion criteria focused on primary ureteric stent placements outside of the operating theatre (OT).A total of 15 studies involving 2072 stents were included. Success rates for correctly positioned stents in bedside or office‐based insertions ranged from 60% to 95.8%, with most studies reporting ≥80% success rates. Common failure reasons included impacted stones and difficulty identifying the ureteric orifice. Pain and tolerability were assessed using various methods, with validated tools indicating moderate pain levels, but most patients would undergo the procedure again under local anaesthesia. Complication rates were generally low, with minor complications such as haematuria or postoperative fever being the most common. Procedural costs were significantly lower in non‐OT settings, with estimates indicating savings of up to four‐fold.Bedside or office‐based ureteric stent insertion is a viable alternative to OT procedures, offering high success rates, manageable pain levels, low complication rates, and substantial cost savings. This approach is particularly advantageous in settings with limited OT access, highlighting its potential for broader adoption in urological practice. Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify and visualize from different perspectives the topic on occupational exposure in operating room (OEOR). Methods: In the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), all the half-century data were retrieved from January 1st, 1973 to December 31st, 2022. CiteSpace, VOSviewer and Excel 2019 were employed to analyze and visualize data, based on publications, countries, institutions, journals, authors, keywords. Result: A total of 336 journal papers were found. The increase of publications virtually started in 1991, peaked in 2020 and has been slowing down ever since. USA played most significant part among all the 49 countries/regions, while Universidade Estadual Paulista out of 499 institutions published the most papers. International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health bears the most documents and citations in all the 219 retrieved journals. There are 1847 authors found, among whom Hoerauf K is the most influential one. "Occupational exposure", "nitrous oxide" and "operating room personnel" are the top 3 co-occurrences keywords. Conclusion: The trend in the field lies in "anaesthetic gas", "blood borne pathogen", "radiation" and "aerosol", while "surgical smoke" and "occupational safety" are the recently researching hot spots in this study. Background: The adoption and successful implementation of digital health solutions heavily depend on digital health literacy, which is particularly critical in the current COVID-19 era. Low levels of digital health literacy are associated with poor preventative practices, the spread of inaccurate information, vaccine hesitancy, and reduced subjective well-being. Thus, the aim of this review was to highlight areas of current scholarly interest and identify any gaps in the literature regarding conceptual and methodological advancements in digital disruption. Methods: The authors conducted a literature search using the databases Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar, focusing on papers released between 2003 and October 2023. The following keywords were used to conduct a thorough literature search: ((digital health OR digital disruption OR digital dental health)) AND (medical health OR telemedicine)), ((online doctor OR online consultation OR online health app)) AND (COVID-19 OR pandemic)). A total of 1,244 studies were screened, including duplicates and non-English research. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 72 articles were selected for the review. Results: A total of 72 articles were included in this review. The studies discussed the potential reasons for disrupted access to healthcare, which is linked to avoidable hospital admissions. Delayed care due to disruptions can lead to disease progression, the exacerbation of existing conditions, and chronic ambulatory care-sensitive conditions. Digital health innovations were presented as solutions to enhance care, reduce clinical workload, and promote independent living. Conclusions: In conclusion, this narrative review provides a comprehensive overview of the conceptual and methodological advancements in digital technology related to healthcare. Background. Froin's syndrome (FS) is a rare entity with uncertain prevalence and prognosis, defined by a pathognomonic triad: cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) xanthochromia, elevated protein levels in the CSF, and hypercoagulated CSF, usually obtained through lumbar puncturing below the level of a partial or complete spinal block. Methods. We conducted a comprehensive review of the literature on FS from its first description in 1903 to December 2023, utilizing PubMed and Google Scholar, and included two new cases from our clinical practice. Results. We describe two patients who suffered from Froin's syndrome secondary to spinal abscesses. According to our review, FS is caused by neoplasia in 33% of cases, non-malignant mechanical causes in 27%, infections in 27%, non-infectious inflammatory processes in 6%, and vascular in 6%. The most prevalent symptoms are paraplegia/paraparesis (64%), back pain (38%), altered mental state and/or confusion (23%), sciatica (17%), headaches (17%), leg sensory defects (17%), and urinary retention (14%), and are thought to be linked with the underlying causes rather than the CSF characteristics. FS holds a poor prognosis: only 22% recuperate fully after treatment, 22% die due to the cause leading to FS, and 14% retain sequelae. Conclusions. Xanthochromia and proteinorachia >500 mg/dL are not specific to any single pathological condition, but indicate defective CSF recirculation and spinal block, causing diffusive and/or inflammatory processes resulting in the hyperproteinosis and coagulation of the CSF. Spinocerebellar ataxia type 34 (SCA34) is a dominantly inherited disease that causes late-onset ataxia, in association with skin lesions in the form of erythrokeratodermia variabilis. It is caused by mutations in the ELOVL4 gene, which encodes for the ELOVL4 protein and has the function of lengthening very long chain (VLC) fatty acids (FA), which are important components of central myelin. The aim of this work was to review the medical literature on the biochemical abnormalities of SCA34, and based on the obtained information, to propose supplementation of deficient FAs. A review of the ad hoc medical literature was performed. Plasma levels of the ELOVL4 products C32, C34 and C36 FA have not been reported in SCA34 yet. However, pathogenic variants of ELOVL4 revealed deficient biosynthesis of C28, C30, C32, C34 and C36 FA compared to WT in cell cultures, and the levels of ceramides and phosphatidylcholines containing ≥ 34 C FA were decreased compared to WT in HeLa cells expressing mutant SCA34 proteins. Besides, a pathological study of SCA34 revealed myelin destruction and loss of oligodendrocytes in cerebral and cerebellar white matter. Levels of VLC-FA should be determined, to identify specifically deficient FAs in SCA34. Cerebellar ataxia could possibly be improved by administration of the deficient FAs, as found in SCA38 with supplementation of docosahexaenoic acid. The authors suggest investigators with access to SCA34, to take into consideration this therapeutic hypothesis, and try to verify the potential efficacy of administration of VLCFA in this disease. Aims: Cochlear implantation is a potential intervention for individuals with severe to profound hearing loss, in particular in the pediatric population. This literature review aims to comprehensively evaluate the applications of electrophysiological tests in enhancing cochlear implant (CI) outcomes for children. Methods: A literature review searched Medline and PubMed databases for articles on electrophysiological tests in CI children, using the terms "electrophysiological tests," "children," and "cochlear implant." The systematic search leads to 72 eligible texts. Results: Electrophysiological tests can be used to test CI children without the need for their active participation. These tests can be helpful in identifying and improving the health of deaf children in various ways, such as determining the CI functional status, the semantic integration effects in CI children, the effect of central auditory structures in speech stimulus processing, the development of lexical-semantic in CI children, and tracking the maturation of the central auditory system. CI enhances central auditory nervous system (CANS) maturation and auditory/language skills. Conclusion: The quality of electrophysiological tests can be improved to enhance hearing outcome prediction, postoperative physiology understanding, and hearing loss mechanisms. Background: Esophageal cancer is the eighth most common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. There are two main histological subtypes of esophageal cancer: adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Among the factors associated with the development of esophageal cancer, estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) has been found to have a clinical significance. Aim: To investigate the relationship between ERβ expression and esophageal cancer. Methods: English Medical literature searches were conducted for ERβ expression in patients with esophageal cancer versus healthy controls. Searches were performed up to August 31, 2023, using MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase and Google Scholar. Meta-analysis was performed by using Comprehensive meta-analysis software (Version 4, Biostat Inc., Englewood, NJ, USA). Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were calculated. Heterogeneity was evaluated using Cochrane Q-test, and it was considered present if the Q-test P value was less than 0.10. I2 statistic was used to measure the proportion of inconsistency in individual studies, with I2 > 50% representing heterogeneity. We also calculated a potential publication bias. Results: Ten studies representing 11 substudies were selected according to the inclusion criteria. The odds ratio of ERβ expression in fixed effect analysis was 0.448, 95% CI: 0.237 to 0.846, 55.2% lower in esophageal cancer than in normal mucosa. Heterogeneity and inconsistency were low, and no publication bias was demonstrated. Conclusion: This meta-analysis showed that ERβ expression is lower in esophageal cancer biopsy specimens than in healthy controls, this finding may have a significant effect on survival and can lead to new therapeutic avenues. Background & Objective: Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE) has gained popularity as an objective assessment tool. Traditional assessment methods such as video and semester practical examinations are better suited to assessing the cognitive domain in pharmacology. The competency-based medical education curriculum has shifted to the psychomotor and attitude communication domains (hands-on demonstration on manikins, criticism of prescription and medical literature, hands-on demonstration on manikins, computer-assisted learning), and assessing these domains calls for more objective methods of assessment, such as the OSPE. This study aimed to design and implement the OSPE as an assessment tool for practical pharmacology for Phase II MBBS students. We also evaluated the perception, acceptability, and usefulness of OSPE for the students and the faculty. Material & Methods: The faculty was sensitized. Group discussions with the head of the department and faculty were held regarding the content of the OSPE stations and the design, planning, implementation, and feasibility checks. The OSPE was scheduled to be held at the upcoming formative examination with a set of 8 OSPE stations and 2 rest stations. The OSPE stations were set up in the department and were initially piloted by faculty. The OSPE was carried out in the formative examination of Phase II students. Feedback questionnaires for both students and faculty members were prepared and validated prior to administration. Results: Of the ninety-eight students in the batch, 96 participated. The average OSPE score obtained by the students was 22.23 ± 5.74 (the total OSPE score was 35). Ninety-six percent of the students enjoyed the OSPE, 99% of whom were satisfied (Likert scale 3-5). All the faculty agreed that the OSPE was unbiased and structured, although it required more effort, and manpower and preparation were time consuming. The malignant transformation of mature cystic teratomas during pregnancy is a rare occurrence in medical literature. In this case report, we present a remarkable instance of mucinous intestinal adenocarcinoma arising from a mature ovarian cystic teratoma diagnosed during pregnancy. This is among the few reports detailing the effective use of the FOLFOX 6 chemotherapy regimen for treating this type of intestinal cancer. We report a surgically challenging case, in the context of a diagnosis of juvenile glaucoma refractory to drug therapy, multi-operated, known patient with congenital ichthyosis, part of Dorfman–Chanarin Syndrome (DCS), with a single functional eye. She is a young patient (54) and housewife in an urban environment known to have DCS and BE (both eyes), strong myopia, and congenital nystagmus. She initially underwent cataract surgery in 2015 and again in 2017. As of 2015, she was known to have juvenile glaucoma under maximal therapy. The important increases in pressure started in 2020 when the dermatological condition worsened (exacerbation of skin changes in the context of ichthyosis), the patient is in menopause, and presbyopia has set in. The glaucoma could no longer be controlled with medication and required serial surgery in both eyes (initially in the right eye in 2020 and in the left eye in 2023). The right eye showed a favorable evolution until 2024, when a second trabeculectomy became necessary, with a favorable evolution. Conclusions: To our knowledge, such a case has not been documented in the medical literature. Frequent monitoring of intraocular pressures and prompt treatment are required. It is a rare association, a very complicated case of managing a patient with refractory glaucoma and multiple associated ophthalmic and systemic pathologies. We are also dealing with a single functional eye, difficult to manage due to a thin sclera that has caused intraoperative difficulties, and the association of congenital nystagmus and strabismus. Background and Objectives: Statistics are of paramount significance to physicians as they allow them to critically interpret the medical literature and to contribute to it. However, teaching statistics to medical students and physicians, as well as learning statistics, is nothing short of difficult and anxiety-inducing to a great extent. Materials and Methods: In this study, an example of a novel approach to teaching statistics to medical students is introduced at a single college of medicine in Saudi Arabia. In this retrospective report, a new approach that has been developed and delivered to students is described. Results: The approach, referred to as the personal experience pathway, is part of a major curriculum change to the MBBS program. The track presents statistics to students as a tool, rather than a subject, that students will need to interpret results, either present in the literature or those of the research projects they are conducting. The outcome of this process has been assessed through measuring students' scholarly output through student self-reporting and has been followed up over four student cohorts graduating between the years 2019 and 2022. The approach has successfully equipped students with a solid foundation of statistical understanding that has allowed them to publish in peer-reviewed journals. Such scholarly output has increased significantly over the last two years. Conclusions: The current study presents a framework through which the detailed curriculum plan could be applied to other medical schools, nationally and internationally, which will better prepare future statistically oriented physicians. Background: We carried out a systematic review of the medical literature on potential effects of caregiving on the health and well being of spouses of Fibromyalgia (FM) patients and pooled the results in a meta-analysis. Methods: The review is comprised of original studies that examined the mood states and well-being of husbands/wives, or long-term intimate partners, of FM patients. The authors searched the PubMed, Scopus, APA PsycNet and Web of Science databases using the key words "fibromyalgia and spouses," "fibromyalgia and partners," and "fibromyalgia and husbands." Of 570 papers that were initially identified using the search words, 18 papers were considered eligible. We used the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist (JBICAC) and Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) tools to assess the risk of bias in the analytical cross-sectional and qualitative studies, respectively. Results: The overall score in mood states was significantly higher among spouses of FM patients than among spouses of individuals without FM (SMD [95% CI] = 0.52 [0.30; 0.74]). The strongest evidence was found for depression, SMD [95% CI] = 0.68 [0.33; 1.03]. The overall standardized score of quality of life was significantly lower among spouses of FM patients, SMD [95% CI] = -0.59 [-0.79; -0.38], with significant differences in physical function and role, emotional role, and mental health subscales. Limitation: Limitation of this review is the scant number of studies that addressed several health domains, which made it impossible to carry out meta-analyses in these domains. Conclusion: Spouses of FM patients show the emotional and physical consequences of caregiving, and impaired quality of life. AbstractThis study examines the effect of forest loss on child health and educational outcomes in Indonesia, a country that has experienced one of the highest deforestation rates in the world. In line with the findings in the medical and biological literature that deforestation can encourage the breeding of malaria-carrying mosquitoes through changes in local ecosystems, our estimation results show that deforestation significantly increases child fever but not other infectious diseases, implying an increased incidence of malaria infection due to deforestation. In addition, the results from the education analysis show that children exposed to larger-scale deforestation in early childhood are afterwards more likely to fall behind academically in terms of years of education. Various robustness checks suggest that these adverse health and educational effects are driven by forest loss but not by other possible preexisting trends or confounders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Spinal cysts have traditionally been treated with surgery since it was first described in 1950. However, there have been rare instances where these cysts have resolved on their own without the need for surgical intervention. Here, we discuss the 27th reported case of such spontaneous resolution in the medical literature and delve into the details of this unique case. Case presentation: This report details a rare case of a 58-year-old Middle Eastern female who suffered from severe radicular and lumbar pain. Radiological study showed the presence of a cyst in the lumbar column. Noninvasive treatment was chosen after ensuring that there were no other symptoms requiring surgery. The patient showed gradual improvement over the course of 12 months, after which the pain completely disappeared. Discussion: The surgical approach is currently the main treatment for spinal cysts, but spontaneous resolution, despite its rarity, may be worth considering as a preferred therapeutic approach in the future. This avenue has not been thoroughly explored or studied. Due to the etiology of these cysts and their location within mobile joints, a longer period of conservative management including rest and physical therapy may play a pivotal role in promoting natural resolution. Conclusion: Conservative treatment of cysts should continue for at least 8 months, using painkillers and physical therapy without lumbar bracing. Surgery remains the most effective means of treatment to date. Further research is needed to validate and establish standardized treatment protocols. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Medical named entity recognition (NER) focuses on extracting and classifying key entities from medical texts. Through automated medical information extraction, NER can effectively improve the efficiency of electronic medical record analysis, medical literature retrieval, and intelligent medical question–answering systems, enabling doctors and researchers to obtain the required medical information more quickly and thereby helping to improve the accuracy of diagnosis and treatment decisions. The current methods have certain limitations in dealing with contextual dependencies and entity memory and fail to fully consider the contextual relevance and interactivity between entities. To address these issues, this paper proposes a Chinese medical named entity recognition model that combines contextual dependency perception and a new memory unit. The model combines the BERT pre-trained model with a new memory unit (GLMU) and a recall network (RMN). The GLMU can efficiently capture long-distance dependencies, while the RMN enhances multi-level semantic information processing. The model also incorporates fully connected layers (FC) and conditional random fields (CRF) to further optimize the performance of entity classification and sequence labeling. The experimental results show that the model achieved F1 values of 91.53% and 64.92% on the Chinese medical datasets MCSCSet and CMeEE, respectively, surpassing other related models and demonstrating significant advantages in the field of medical entity recognition. Introduction: Neurosurgery is an intensely competitive field. With the USMLE Step 1 transitioning to a pass/fail system, research has become a crucial component of the neurosurgery residency application process. This emphasis on research is particularly critical for international medical graduates (IMGs), who often face greater challenges compared to their U.S. counterparts. IMGs typically need more publications and higher H-indices to stand out. However, accessing quality research opportunities is significantly more difficult for those from low- and middle-income countries. This mini-review aims to provide a new perspective for IMGs, demonstrating that publishing in prestigious neurosurgical journals is possible even with limited resources. Methods: We searched Scopus and reviewed Brazilian publications from 2014 to 2023 in Neurosurgery and the Journal of Neurosurgery. We extracted the methodological designs of the studies and the graduation status of the first authors. Results: In 2023–2024, four Brazilian medical students published systematic reviews in major neurosurgical journals as first authors, marking a revolutionary change in the Brazilian neurosurgical landscape not seen in the past decade. These achievements illustrate that high-impact publications are attainable without geographical proximity, substantial financial support, or access to extensive institutional databases. Letters to the editor also represented a considerable Brazilian contribution. Conclusion: Literature reviews and letters to the editor are accessible methods for IMGs to engage in impactful research. IMGs can maximize their abilities and significantly contribute to neurosurgery by embracing literature reviews and meta-analyses. This report describes a male skeleton recovered from the Samnite necropolis of Barrea (Abruzzo, 8th–5th century BCE), showing one malformed foot consistent with the diagnosis of unilateral congenital clubfoot associated with tarsal and tarsometatarsal coalitions in the same foot. This finding is particularly noteworthy because tarsal coalitions in congenital equinovarus foot have rarely been reported in medical literature, and to our knowledge, never in the paleopathological record. The recovery of this individual with impaired locomotion from a grave containing a complete array of weapons and armor sheds new light on the occupant's identity and social attitudes toward disabled people in Samnite society. In mortuary archaeology, the correlation between warrior burials and social identity in life of the dead in ancient times is a widely debated issue. Some scholars assert that the weapons in these graves suggest the existence of a warrior class; others propose that the military items of the burial assemblage indicate a high social status or significant power. Painting has played an important role in the expression of scientific findings and experiences in different civilizations and cultures. When writing was not able to express the content correctly, traditional medicine scholars incorporated their ideas into pictures and paintings that, although elementary, were used as illustrations of traditional medicine information at the time. Background: Cutaneous graft‐versus‐host disease (GVHD) is a common complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Phototherapy has been used to treat cutaneous GVHD, but data on its safety and efficacy are sparse. Aim: Review the current medical literature regarding the efficacy, dosing, and safety of various types of phototherapies for the treatment of cutaneous GVHD. Methods: A systematic review of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and ClinicalTrials databases was performed. Publications were screened according to the PRISMA guidelines. Exclusion criteria comprised case reports and case series reporting less than five patients, review articles, and articles not published in English. Results: A total of 28/1304 (2.5%) studies were included. Fifteen studies (n = 267 patients) focused on psoralen and ultraviolet (UV) A (PUVA), in which 65.5% of patients received concomitantly other systemic treatments. The response rate was 89.9%, with a mean of 33.2 treatments. Adverse events were recorded in 54% but were mainly mild. Eight studies, encompassing 95 patients, focused on narrow‐band (NB) UVB. A response was observed in 94%, with a mean number of 26 treatments and 8.6% adverse effects. UVA1 was reported in six studies (n = 132 patients). A response was recorded in 89.3% with a mean of 26.2 treatments. Adverse events were noted in 70.1%, with a discontinuation rate of 10.9%. It should be noted that adverse events were recorded during the follow‐up period of the studies, which varied significantly, ranging from no follow‐up to 31 months. Conclusions: Current data regarding the use of phototherapy for the treatment of cutaneous GVHD are based on retrospective studies and case series. The present report advocates the use of one of the three modalities of phototherapy as an effective and safe adjunctive treatment for cutaneous GVHD, especially NB UVB phototherapy. A comprehensive review of Montaigne's extensive travels across Europe, interactions with prominent physicians, and the various treatments he sought for urolithiasis is conducted. Montaigne's struggle with urolithiasis began at the age of 45, profoundly impacting his life and writings. His journey through France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy in search of relief, along with consultations with renowned physicians such as Félix Platter and Girolamo Borro, significantly influenced his philosophical inquiries into human suffering and mortality. Montaigne's detailed accounts of his condition, describing 19 episodes of renal colic, offered early patient-centered perspectives in medical literature, highlighting the importance of understanding the psychological and emotional dimensions of illness. His therapeutic use of thermal baths and other non-invasive treatments reflected the medical practices of the time. Montaigne's experience with urolithiasis not only shaped his philosophical essays but also underscored the importance of empathetic and holistic patient care. Currently there is a severe lack of research on autism and Indigenous people in Canada. This scoping review explores this literature gap and assesses the same literature from an Indigenous perspective. Scoping reviews are an effective means to explore the literature in a specific area, in this case, autism and Indigenous people in Canada. We explored existing literature as it pertains to Indigenous populations and autism in Canada. To support this review, the Indigenous Quality Assessment Tool (QAT) was adapted to appraise the quality of literature. In total, there were a total of 212 articles identified of which 24 met the inclusion criteria: (1) some focus on autism, (2) a component specific to Indigenous people, and (3) specific to Canada. Of the 24 articles and reports, 15 were peer-reviewed and the rest considered grey literature. Most articles focused on program delivery with some literature using primary data (quantitative and/or qualitative). Overall, the quality of the research was appraised as poor, as determined by the QAT. Findings reaffirm the critical need for research that addresses autism in Indigenous communities within Canada and show the importance of having research done in full partnership with, or led by, Indigenous people. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a prevalent condition affecting over 150 million men worldwide. While there is a wealth of publications and research in the field of ED, there is a noticeable scarcity of bibliometric analyses of the literature on this topic. This study aims to analyze the scientific activity and research trends related to ED. We conducted a comprehensive search of the Scopus database to identify potentially relevant studies on ED published from 1841 to November 12, 2022. We used the primary keywords "erectile dysfunction" or "impotence" for the search. Several software tools were employed for data calculation and visualization. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear correlation statistical test were used. The main outcomes of interest included the number of publications, year of publication, document type, country of origin, affiliated organizations, and journals of publication. Our search revealed a total of 30,634 publications with a cumulative 657,894 citations in the field of ED literature over the past 18 decades. "Original Article" emerged as the most common document type, accounting for 22,292 records. The United States stood out as the most prolific country, contributing 8809 publications (25% of the total). The University of California in the United States led in research output with 581 publications. Notably, the 'Journal of Sexual Medicine' was the leading publication source, with 1715 publications associated with it. Clinicians and experts in sexual medicine should take authorship trends into account when they review ED articles to improve patient care. A primary strength of our study is that it presents a comprehensive bibliometric review of ED reports spanning 18 decades. Results are limited to ED literature published in the sexual medicine journals and the urology analyzed. The publication volume on ED literature witnessed a substantial increase from 1975 to 2022. The findings from this bibliometric analysis provide valuable insights into research hotspots and emerging trends in the field of ED, which can aid researchers in gaining a better understanding of this topic. Purpose: In the context of medical literature, a significant lacuna exists in understanding median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS). While clinical aspects are well documented, literature lacks a robust exploration of the anatomical relationship between the celiac trunk and the median arcuate ligament (MAL). Methods: Morphometric parameters, including the vertebral level of MAL origin, MAL thickness, celiac trunk (CeT) origin level, diameter, and distances between CeT/Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) and the MAL center were observed on 250 CT angiograms. Cadavers (n = 11) were dissected to examine the same parameters and histo-morphological examination of MAL tissue was done. Results: Radiological findings established average MAL thickness of 7.79 ± 2.58 mm. The celiac trunk typically originated at T12. The average distance between the celiac trunk and the MAL center was 1.32 ± 2.04 mm. The angle of the celiac trunk to the abdominal aorta was primarily obtuse. The average celiac trunk diameter was 5.53 ± 1.33 mm. Histological examinations revealed a diverse MAL composition, indicating variable mechanical properties. Conclusion: This study provides comprehensive morphometric data on the anatomical relationship between the MAL and the celiac trunk. In contrast to available literature which says the average MAL thickness of > 4 mm is an indicator of increased thickness, we observed much higher average thickness in the studied population. The findings contribute to a better understanding of normal anatomical variations which can serve as reference values for accurate radiological diagnosis of MALS. OBJECTIVES: For critically ill patients with acute severe brain injuries, consciousness may reemerge before behavioral responsiveness. The phenomenon of covert consciousness (i.e., cognitive motor dissociation) may be detected by advanced neurotechnologies such as task-based functional MRI (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) in patients who appear unresponsive on the bedside behavioral examination. In this narrative review, we summarize the state-of-the-science in ICU detection of covert consciousness. Further, we consider the prognostic and therapeutic implications of diagnosing covert consciousness in the ICU, as well as its potential to inform discussions about continuation of life-sustaining therapy for patients with severe brain injuries. DATA SOURCES: We reviewed salient medical literature regarding covert consciousness. STUDY SELECTION: We included clinical studies investigating the diagnostic performance characteristics and prognostic utility of advanced neurotechnologies such as task-based fMRI and EEG. We focus on clinical guidelines, professional society scientific statements, and neuroethical analyses pertaining to the implementation of advanced neurotechnologies in the ICU to detect covert consciousness. DATA EXTRACTION AND DATA SYNTHESIS: We extracted study results, guideline recommendations, and society scientific statement recommendations regarding the diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic relevance of covert consciousness to the clinical care of ICU patients with severe brain injuries. CONCLUSIONS: Emerging evidence indicates that covert consciousness is present in approximately 15-20% of ICU patients who appear unresponsive on behavioral examination. Covert consciousness may be detected in patients with traumatic and nontraumatic brain injuries, including patients whose behavioral examination suggests a comatose state. The presence of covert consciousness in the ICU may predict the pace and extent of long-term functional recovery. Professional society guidelines now recommend assessment of covert consciousness using task-based fMRI and EEG. Representations of disease in Renaissance paintings have been discussed in medical literature, in the context of historical epidemiology, as potential sources of information about the incidence and appearance of particular conditions in earlier times. The present study seeks to show how Renaissance art can also contribute to historical nosology by casting light on the question of whether particular conditions recognized as abnormal today were understood as pathological in the past. The hands of two Renaissance Madonna figures are examined in sculptures produced by Francesco di Simone Ferrucci (1437–1493). Because the Virgin Mary was considered physically perfect by believers, and because Francesco was a successful producer of devotional sculptures for a wide audience, it is highly probable that any abnormal conditions found in the hands of Madonnas sculpted by him would not have been regarded as pathological at the time. The sculptures examined appear to depict camptodactyly and boutonniere deformity in the hands of Madonna figures. These uncommon conditions are also found in Renaissance artworks that show other individuals of high social status, but their presence in the hands of the Madonna gives the strongest indication that they were not considered pathological, due to religious belief in the Virgin's physical perfection. Examination of Madonna figures in late fifteenth century Renaissance art can contribute to historical nosology by identifying abnormal conditions that were not regarded as pathological at the time.
