Purpose: To assess the healing process of the extraction socket and the dimensional changes that occur after alveolar ridge preservation utilizing a polylactide-co-glycolide scaffold (PLGA). Materials and Methods: The present study involved the extraction of 28 teeth from 14 patients. The total number of sockets was 28, which were divided into two groups consisting of 14 test sockets and 14 control sockets. The study group (SG) was subjected to socket preservation with a PLGA scaffold while the control group (CG) was left for spontaneous healing. The dimensions were measured before and after operation at 1, 3, and 5 mm below the alveolar crest horizontally and the height of buccolingual bone vertically. Results: According to the histologic analyses, the PLGA scaffold was resorbed within 4 months. CBCT imaging revealed a decrease in the horizontal crest dimension at three distinct coronoapical levels in SG, measuring 2.05 ± 1.05 mm at -1 mm, 1.51 ± 0.89 mm at -3 mm, and 0.92 ± 0.7 mm at -5 mm. CG showed readings of 1.22 ± 1 at -1 mm, 0.92 ± 0.67 at -3 mm, and 0.73 ± 0.69 at -5 mm. In comparison to CG, SG showed a significant reduction in horizontal losses at -1 mm. Vertical crest dimensions decreased by 1.64 ± 1.11 mm for the buccal bone height and by 1.56 ± 1.08 mm for lingual bone height in SG; in CG, the buccal and lingual bone height had mean values of 2.08 ± 1.44 mm and 1.73 ± 1.27 mm, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference observed in the vertical losses between the groups. Conclusions: Following a period of 4 months, the PLGA scaffold was completely resorbed. Lactate, a product of glycolysis, is formed under aerobic conditions. Extensive work has shown lactate flux in young and exercising humans; however, the effect of age is not known. We tested the hypothesis that postprandial lactate shuttling (PLS) would be diminished in older adults. We used [3-13C]lactate and [6,6-2H]glucose tracers, an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and arterialized blood sampling to determine postprandial lactate rates of appearance (Ra), disappearance (Rd), and oxidation (Rox) in 15 young (28.1 ± 1.4 yr) and 13 older (70.6 ± 2.4 yr) healthy men and women. In young participants, fasting blood [lactate] (≈0.5 mM) rose after the glucose challenge, peaked at 15 min, dipped to a nadir at 30 min, and rose again peaking at 60 min (≈1.0 mM). Initial responses in lactate Ra of older participants were delayed and diminished until 90 min rising by 0.83 mg·kg-1·min-1. Lactate Rox was higher throughout the entire trial in young participants by a difference of ∼0.5 mg·kg-1·min-1. Initial peaks in lactate Ra and concentration in all volunteers demonstrated the presence of an enteric PLS following an OGTT. Notably, in the systemic, but not enteric, PLS phase, lactate Ra correlated highly with glucose Rd (r2 = 0.92). Correspondence of second peaks in lactate Ra and concentration and glucose Rd shows dependence of lactate Ra on glucose Rd. Although results show both enteric and systemic PLS phases in young and older study cohorts, metabolic responses were delayed and diminished in healthy older individuals.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We used isotope tracers, an oral glucose tolerance test, and arterialized blood sampling to determine postprandial lactate flux rates in healthy young and older men and women. Lactate rates of appearance and oxidation and the lactate-pyruvate exchange were delayed and diminished in both enteric and systemic postprandial lactate shuttle phases in older participants.

Physical function is regarded as the cornerstone of healthy aging, and exercise is an important determinant of healthy aging. This study examined the feasibility and physiological (heart rate, blood pressure, blood lactate, and rate of perceived exertion) and psychological (enjoyment) response resulting from an acute progressive sled-push (SLP) exercise session using the novel XPO Sled Trainer in older adults and compared that with walking (WKC) condition. The exercise session comprised six exercise bouts at 75%, 85%, 100% (2×), and 125% (2×) of normal velocity with a 2-min rest between bouts. Thirty-six older adults were randomly allocated into either the SLP or WKC conditions. No adverse events were observed during the exercise session, and all participants completed the exercise protocol as prescribed. One-third of the participants in the SLP group reported minimal body discomfort. Significantly higher responses were observed for all physiological variables as the intensity of the exercise increased in the SLP group compared with the WKC group (p <.001). The SLP group presented a decline in enjoyment as the intensity of the exercise increased (during), but similar enjoyment level than the WKC group for the overall exercise session (p =.711). Our findings support the viability and safety of SLP exercise using the XPO Sled Trainer in older adults. Such exercise demonstrated an intensity-driven modality that may have potential to elucidate positive adaptations in the cardiovascular system of older adults with acceptable levels of enjoyment. Our purpose was to determine how age affects metabolic flexibility and underlying glucose kinetics in healthy young and older adults. Therefore, glucose and lactate tracers along with pulmonary gas exchange data were used to determine glucose kinetics and respiratory exchange ratios [RER = carbon dioxide production (V̇co2)/oxygen consumption (V̇o2)] during a 2-h 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). After an 12-h overnight fast, 28 participants, 15 young (21-35 yr; 7 men and 8 women) and 13 older (60-80 yr; 7 men and 6 women), received venous primed-continuous infusions of [6,6-2H]glucose and [3-13C]lactate with a [Formula: see text] bolus. After a 90-min metabolic stabilization and tracer equilibration period, volunteers underwent an OGTT. Arterialized glucose concentrations ([glucose]) started to rise 15 min post glucose consumption, peaked at 60 min, and remained elevated. As assessed by rates of appearance (Ra) and disposal (Rd) and metabolic clearance rate (MCR), glucose kinetics were suppressed in older compared to young individuals. As well, unlike in young individuals, fractional gluconeogenesis (fGNG) remained elevated in the older population after the oral glucose challenge. Finally, there were no differences in 12-h fasting baseline or peak RER values following an oral glucose challenge in older compared to young men and women, making RER an incomplete measure of metabolic flexibility in the volunteers we evaluated. Our study revealed that glucose kinetics are significantly altered in a healthy aged population after a glucose challenge. Furthermore, those physiological deficits are not detected from changes in RER during an OGTT.NEW & NOTEWORTHY To determine metabolic flexibility in response to an OGTT, we studied healthy young and older men and women to determine glucose kinetics and changes in RER. Compared to young subjects, glucose kinetics were suppressed in older healthy individuals during an OGTT. Surprisingly, the age-related changes in glucose flux were not reflected in RER measurements; thus, RER measurements do not give a complete view of metabolic flexibility in healthy individuals.

The skin microbiome plays a pivotal role in the production of attractive cues detected by mosquitoes. Here, we leveraged recent advances in genetic engineering to significantly reduce the production of L-(+)-lactic acid as a strategy to reduce mosquito attraction to the highly prominent skin commensals Staphylococcus epidermidis and Corynebacterium amycolatum. Engraftment of these engineered bacteria onto the skin of mice reduced mosquito attraction and feeding for up to 11 uninterrupted days, which is considerably longer than the several hours of protection conferred by the leading chemical repellent N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide. Taken together, our findings demonstrate engineering the skin microbiome to reduce attractive volatiles represents an innovative untapped strategy to reduce vector attraction, preventing bites, and pathogen transmission. These findings set the stage for new classes of long-lasting microbiome-based repellent products.

Lactate elevation is a well-characterized biomarker of mitochondrial dysfunction, but its role in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is not well defined. Urine lactate was measured in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in 3 cohorts (HUNT3, SMART2D, CRIC). Urine and plasma lactate were measured during euglycemic and hyperglycemic clamps in participants with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Patients in the HUNT3 cohort with DKD had elevated urine lactate levels compared with age- and sex-matched controls. In patients in the SMART2D and CRIC cohorts, the third tertile of urine lactate/creatinine was associated with more rapid estimated glomerular filtration rate decline, relative to first tertile. Patients with T1D demonstrated a strong association between glucose and lactate in both plasma and urine. Glucose-stimulated lactate likely derives in part from proximal tubular cells, since lactate production was attenuated with sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibition in kidney sections and in SGLT2-deficient mice. Several glycolytic genes were elevated in human diabetic proximal tubules. Lactate levels above 2.5 mM potently inhibited mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in human proximal tubule (HK2) cells. We conclude that increased lactate production under diabetic conditions can contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction and become a feed-forward component to DKD pathogenesis.

Dietary glucose in excess is stored in the liver in the form of glycogen. As opposed to direct conversion of glucose into glycogen, the hypothesis of the postprandial lactate shuttle (PLS) proposes that dietary glucose uptake is metabolized to lactate in the gut, thereby being transferred to the liver for glycogen storage. In the present study, we provide evidence of a PLS in young healthy men and women. Overnight fasted participants underwent an oral glucose tolerance test, and arterialized lactate concentration and rate of appearance were determined. The concentration of lactate in the blood rose before the concentration of glucose, thus providing evidence of an enteric PLS. Secondary increments in the concentration of lactate in the blood and its rate of appearance coincided with those of glucose, which indicates the presence of a larger, secondary, systemic PLS phase driven by hepatic glucose release. The present study challenges the notion that lactate production is the result of hypoxia in skeletal muscles, because our work indicates that glycolysis proceeds to lactate in fully aerobic tissues and dietary carbohydrate is processed via lactate shuttling. Our study proposes that, in humans, lactate is a major vehicle for carbohydrate carbon distribution and metabolism.

This study investigated the effects of an acute dose (900 mg) of New Zealand Blackcurrant (NZBC) extract on 5-km running performance, alongside associated physiological and metabolic responses. Sixteen trained male runners (age 26 ± 5 years, stature 173.4 ± 7.3 cm, body mass 73.7 ± 6.9 kg, maximal oxygen consumption [ V ˙ O 2 max ] 55.4 ± 6.1 ml·kg−1·min−1) ingested either capsules containing NZBC extract (3 × 300 mg CurraNZ, 315 mg anthocyanins) or a matched placebo (3 × 300 mg gluten-free flour) 2 hr before exercise in a double-blind, randomized, crossover design. Performance time, physiological, and metabolic responses were assessed in a 5-km time trial, preceded by 10-min exercise at the lactate threshold on a treadmill. NZBC extract did not alter the physiological or metabolic responses to exercise at the lactate threshold (oxygen uptake, respiratory exchange ratio, minute ventilation, carbohydrate oxidation, fat oxidation, heart rate, blood lactate, or rating of perceived exertion, p >.05). The 5-km time trial was completed in a faster time in the NZBC extract condition compared with placebo (NZBC: 1,308.96 ± 122.36 s, placebo: 1,346.33 ± 124.44, p =.001, d = −0.23, confidence interval range = [−0.46, 0.00 s]). No differences in physiological or metabolic responses were apparent between conditions for the 5-km time trial (p >.05). Ingesting 900 mg of NZBC extract as an acute dose improves performance in trained male runners without altering physiological or metabolic responses to exercise. Further research is needed to assess a wider range of possible mechanisms (e.g., cardiovascular function, metabolite profiles) to advance insight into improved performance following supplementation. Breast cancer metastasis to the brain is a clinical challenge rising in prevalence. However, the underlying mechanisms, especially how cancer cells adapt a distant brain niche to facilitate colonization, remain poorly understood. A unique metabolic feature of the brain is the coupling between neurons and astrocytes through glutamate, glutamine, and lactate. Here we show that extracellular vesicles from breast cancer cells with a high potential to develop brain metastases carry high levels of miR-199b-5p, which shows higher levels in the blood of breast cancer patients with brain metastases comparing to those with metastatic cancer in other organs. miR-199b-5p targets solute carrier transporters (SLC1A2/EAAT2 in astrocytes and SLC38A2/SNAT2 and SLC16A7/MCT2 in neurons) to hijack the neuron-astrocyte metabolic coupling, leading to extracellular retention of these metabolites and promoting cancer cell growth. Our findings reveal a mechanism through which cancer cells of a non-brain origin reprogram neural metabolism to fuel brain metastases.

The resident human skin microbiome is responsible for the production of most of the human scents that are attractive to mosquitoes. Hence, engineering the human skin microbiome to synthesize less of mosquito attractants or produce repellents could potentially reduce bites and prevent the transmission of deadly mosquito-borne pathogens. In order to further characterize the human skin volatilome, we quantified the major volatiles of 39 strains of skin commensals (Staphylococci and Corynebacterium). Importantly, to validate the behavioral activity of these volatiles, we first assessed landing behavior triggered by human skin volatiles. We demonstrated that landing behavior is gated by the presence of carbon dioxide and L-(+)-lactic acid. This is similar to the combinatorial coding triggering mosquito short range attraction. Repellency behavior to selected skin volatiles and terpenes was tested in the presence of carbon dioxide and L-(+)-lactic acid. In a 2-choice landing behavior context, the skin volatiles 2- and 3-methyl butyric acids reduced mosquito landing by 62.0-81.6% and 87.1-99.6%, respectively. Similarly, the terpene geraniol was capable of reducing mosquito landing behavior by 74.9%. We also tested the potential repellency effects of terpenes in mosquitoes at short-range using a 4-port olfactometer. In these assays, geraniol reduced mosquito attraction (69-78%) to a mixture of key human kairomones carbon dioxide, L-(+)-lactic acid, and ammonia. These findings demonstrate that carbon dioxide and L-(+)-lactic acid change the valence of other skin volatiles towards mosquito landing behavior. Moreover, this study offers candidate odorants to be targeted in a novel strategy to reduce attractants or produce repellents by the human skin microbiota that may curtail mosquito bites, and subsequent mosquito-borne disease.

This study aims to investigate the energy absorption performance of three bending-dominated lattice structures including quad-diametral (QD), quad-diametral-line (QDL), and dodecahedron (DO)). Compression test specimens with these three lattice types were manufactured using the material extrusion additive manufacturing technique with PLA material. The specimens were manufactured with different sets of values of the print temperature, layer thickness, and line width to identify their effect on the energy absorption performance. Taguchi's method was utilized for this purpose which revealed that the temperature is the most effective and its optimized value is 225 °C. It was also found that the energy absorption performance of the DO lattice is superior to that of QD and QDL lattices. In the following set of experiments, the print temperature was fixed to its optimized value (i.e. 225 °C), and another process parameter (i.e. print speed) along with layer thickness and line width were investigated among eight different groups of DO lattices. Numerical investigations were also performed and validated based on the experimental results. Parametric studies were also done for the DO lattice to improve its energy absorption performance by changing the strut diameters and introducing grading to the struts at each lattice cell. Needless electrospinning (NES) is the most advanced and robust method to generate biopolymeric nanofibers. NES overcomes the needle clogging and low throughput issues of conventional needle based electrospinning (ES). However, the issue with all ES techniques is the absence of generalized methods in the literature, and most of the work is being done empirically. The solvent system dictates the feasibility of the ES process, and solvent system based studies can help create more generalized ES methods. The current work provides a systematic approach to fabricating tribiopolymeric nanofibers. NES was used to fabricate chitosan (CS)/polylactic acid (PLA)/nanocellulose (NCC) based nanofibers by optimizing the solvent system using dichloromethane (DCM) and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). Biopolymeric blend PLA/CS/NCC (10:0.1:0.05 w/v %) in various formulated solvent systems were made and analyzed for their physical properties (sedimentation rate, particle size, viscosity, and surface tension) and subjected to NES. The binary solvent system SS91 (DCM (90):TFA (10) %) showed the lowest sedimentation rate and viscosity while the highest particle size and surface tension, resulting in the beads free nanofibers. The viscosity and surface tension comparison were used to determine a critical point for the feasibility of nanofiber fabrication. Multicellular, thin‐walled impact tubes have been intensely studied and used in various engineering fields in recent years due to their lightweight, high performance, ease of application, superior energy absorption, and stable deformation characteristics. In this study, energy absorption, crashworthiness performances, and deformation properties of thin‐walled structures manufactured from polylactic acid (PLA+) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) using fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology were compared under quasi‐static axial compression. Thin‐walled structures consist of multicellular tubes connected by concentric corner‐edge connections with square and hexagonal cross‐sections. Experimental testing outcomes indicate that the energy absorption capacity increases with increasing the number of corners in multicellular structures. The tubes with square wall‐to‐wall (S‐WW) and hexagonal wall‐to‐wall (H‐WW) cross‐sections exhibit superior crashworthiness performance compared to other cross‐sections. Based on the experimental results, the absorbed energy by WW patterned PLA+ square tubes are 19%, 7%, and 46% more than that of wall‐to‐corner (WC), corner‐to‐wall (CW), and corner‐to‐corner (CC) patterned tubes, respectively, while it is 11%, 19%, and 80% more in hexagonal cross‐section tubes, respectively. This study provides an informative reference for easier applicability of multicellular energy‐absorbing structures with 3D‐print and the design of corner‐edge connections of internal connections in multicellular structures. Due to its favorable mechanical strength, transparency, and biocompatibility, polylactic acid (PLA) has considerable potential as a biodegradable material. Nevertheless, developing high‐performance PLA composites through environmentally friendly and cost‐effective methods remains a significant challenge. In this study, the composites comprising poly(L‐lactide) (PLLA), basalt fibers (BFs), and poly(D‐lactide) (PDLA) are prepared through facile melt blending. The in situ formed stereocomplex polylactide (SC‐PLA) crystals improve the crystallization ability and rheological behavior of PLLA/BF/PDLA composites. Upon adding 5 wt% PDLA, BFs are nicely dispersed in PLLA matrix because of increased shear intensity. The synergistic effect of BFs and SC‐PLA crystals enhances the mechanical, thermomechanical, and heat resistance properties of PLLA. In particular, PLLA/BF/10%PDLA composites exhibit a Vicat Softening Temperature (VST) of 155.5°C, increasing by approximately 100°C over neat PLLA. Annealing treatment increases the Young's modulus, thermomechanical properties, and VST of samples while reducing their tensile strength. Interestingly, the tensile strength of the annealed PLLA/BF/10%PDLA composites is 50.2 MPa, twice that of the annealed neat PLLA due to the introduction of SC‐PLA crystals. Simultaneously improving the rheological, mechanical, and heat resistance performance of PLLA opens possibilities for expanding its potential applications in the industrial field. [Display omitted] • Acidification pretreatment (AP) enhanced the degradation of lactic acid. • AP accelerated the hydrolysis and acidogenesis of acidified food waste (AFW). • AP promoted the acidogenesis of AFW dominated by butyric acid fermentation. • Biochemical methane potential of AFW was improved by 35.77% through AP. • Enzymatic predictions indicated that AP increased the lactate dehydrogenase activity. Acidified food waste significantly disrupts anaerobic digestion, highlighting the need for effective solutions to mitigate its impact. This study presents a method that utilizes acidified sludge to pretreat acidified food waste, thereby significantly improving the efficiency of hydrolysis and acidogenesis. After acidification pretreatment, hydrolysis efficiency improved from 64.54 % to 96.51 %, while acidogenesis efficiency increased from 34.82 % to 49.95 %. Additionally, the concentration of short-chain fatty acids and hydrogen production in the acidification pretreatment group increased by 45.89 % and 48.67 %, respectively. The pretreatment group exhibited a biochemical methane potential of 512.84 ± 13.73 mL/(g volatile suspended solids), which was 35.77 % higher than that of the control group. Mechanism analysis revealed that the higher abundance of genes associated with lactate dehydrogenase in the acidified sludge facilitated the rapid degradation of lactic acid. Moreover, the abundant Clostridium butyricum in the acidified sludge promoted the targeted conversion of lactic acid and other organic matter into butyric acid within the food waste system. This efficient butyric acid fermentation improved the fermentation environment and provided abundant substrates for methane production. Opuntia ficus-indica cladodes are by-products which contain high amounts of fibres, bioactive and functional compounds. Given their high annual productivity per hectare, cladodes represent a cheap and suitable substrate, usable for fermentation processes. We investigated their potential as a substrate for the growth and production of lactic acid from Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5. A separate hydrolysis and fermentation was performed. The concentration of reducing sugars obtained after the dilute acid and enzymatic hydrolysis was 28.45 g/L. The lactobacillus count ranged from 6.03 to 8.1 log CFU/mL, whereas lactic acid yield and productivity were 0.63 g/g and 0.73 g/L h, respectively. The maximum lactic acid concentration was found to be 17.5 g/L. This study reports the possibility of using the O. ficus indica cladode for lactic acid production by LA-5 aiming to reduce costs for sustainable industrial production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this research was to improve the performance of vortex turbines by testing the performance of vortex turbines using experimental methods, with test variables including blade tilt, flow speed, and vortex turbine impeller material using PLA (polylactic acid). Tests were conducted on a laboratory-scale gravitational water vortex turbine (GWVT) with a pool diameter of 1 meter and a height of 0.8 meters. The test results showed that the turbine with 5 blades produced a maximum torque of 5.89 Nm and an efficiency of 51.10%. The turbine with 7 blades produced a maximum torque of 7.85 Nm and an efficiency of 58.51%. The highest efficiency, 64.69%, was achieved by the 9-bladed turbine, which also had a maximum torque of 8.83 Nm. Experimental tests showed that this laboratory-scale vortex turbine achieved a maximum power output of 87.28 watts, with an efficiency of 56.66% and a torque of 9.81 Nm, using a 9-bladed turbine at a water velocity of 2.5 m/s. These results certainly show an improvement compared to previous reference studies, where the use of materials with lower density, higher blade angle, and larger blade geometry can improve the performance of vortex turbines. In this paper, the foamed polylactic acid (PLA) composites with different ratios of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and lignin (Lg) are prepared. Molecular dynamics simulation analysis indicates that the fillers enhance the mechanical properties of the composites. The optimal foaming temperatures for PLA/Lg and PLA/TiO2 composites are found to be 110 and 100°C, respectively. The supercritical carbon dioxide foaming process is applied to get the foamed composites, and their mechanical and thermal properties are analyzed. The results show that the addition of TiO2 improves the melting point and compression properties of the PLA composites. Furthermore, the inclusion of Lg increases the molecular chain mobility, foaming multiplicity, and compression strength of the composite materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fiber separation technology has been widely used in the removal of metal ions, dyes, proteins, and particles. In this work, the reversible characteristic of temperature sensitive hydrogel which possesses the expansion and contraction at different temperature is used to control the change of internal pores of filter materials for achieving the selective separation and concentration of solution. We prepared polylactic acid (PLA) hollow fiber as outer support layer by the template method and PLA electrospun membrane as internal support diaphragm by electrospinning. Then, the method of adding poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel in the hollow fiber layer by layer was adopted to form the hydrogel/PLA fiber. When the mass ratio of PNIPAM/PLA was 3/1, the sample presented the relatively tight interior morphology and was selected for protein separation. By adjusting the temperature, the rejection capacities of PNIPAM/PLA composite fiber for bovine serum albumin (BSA), and ovalbumin (OVA) were in the range of 25–36 mg/g and 22–31 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the fiber reusability was investigated by swelling and deswelling elution processes. It was found that the sample could be reused 5 times. Renewable resources based polymers have been the focus of materials science scientists since they help to protect the environment in addition to reducing the petroleum resources use. Among renewable polymers poly (lactic acid) (PLA) has emerged due to its biodegradable character and proper performance similar to engineering resins, which afford wide field of applications. In this work the thermal degradation of esterified PLA with itaconic acid (PLA ITA) and the biocomposite PLA ITA FLAX was investigated using thermogavimetry (TG) which data were corroborated through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Isothermal TGs scans and FTIRs spectra were acquired from 150 to 600°C, collected data evidenced that FLAX improved PLA ITA thermal stability, delaying the decomposition of PLA ITA by up to 100 min at 250°C, ensuring safer processability at higher temperatures. From the deconvolution of the DTG peaks, the peak at lower temperature is suggested to be linked to itaconic anhydride decomposition which undergoes macromolecule dissociation, converting into itaconic anhydride and releasing water and afterwards being converted into citraconic anhydride, while the peak at higher temperature is associated to the thermal degradation of telechelic PLA. The compatibility between two distinct polymers in the blend is important to maximize various properties of the blends. This study investigated the effects of kaolin modifications through acid and calcination treatments on the compatibility, molecular weight, its distribution, and various properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) blends. In addition, the incorporation of the modified kaolin as a compatibilizer into the blends enhanced their mechanical and thermal properties, addressing the challenges of immiscibility between distinct polymers. The experimental approach included the utilization of scanning electron microscopy, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, x‐ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, rheometer, and melt flow index to examine the structural, molecular, and thermal, mechanical and rheological behaviors of the composites. The changes in various molecular weights were correlated with other properties. The incorporation of surface‐treated kaolin into the blend improved the compatibility between PLA and PVB, exhibiting a singular melting temperature peak and a less distinct interface between two different polymers. Facial masks available in the market are primarily made of non‐woven fabric. To extend their shelf life, preservatives, and essences are added to their ingredients. However, this practice has a significant impact on the environment and human health. As a result, consumers nowadays prefer to choose "Clean Beauty" products for their skincare routines. Herein, electrospinning technology was used to prepare a novel Janus nanofiber membrane comprising Polylactic acid/Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PLA/PVP) and Chitosan/Gelatin (CS/GEL), loaded with Gastrodia elata polysaccharide (GEP) and melatonin (MT). The Janus nanofiber facial mask is a solid mask that provides excellent moisturizing, antioxidant, and biocompatibility benefits. It can dissolve quickly and be absorbed by the skin, while the hydrophobic fiber helps slow down the rapid evaporation of water in the mask. This, combined with the Janus structure, helps delay the loss of water and allows for quick penetration, resulting in a long‐lasting moisturizing effect. Ruminal acidosis occurs as a continuum of disorders, stemming from ruminal dysbiosis and disorders of metabolism, of varying severity. The condition has a marked temporal dynamic expression, resulting in cases expressing quite different rumen concentrations of VFA, lactic acid, ammonia, and rumen pH over time. Clinical ruminal acidosis is an important condition of cattle and subclinical ruminal acidosis (SRA) is very prevalent in many dairy populations, with estimates between 10% and 26% of cows in early lactation. Estimates of the duration of a case suggest that the lactational incidence of the condition may be as high as 500 cases per 100 cows in the first 100 d of lactation. Historical confusion about the etiology and pathogenesis of ruminal acidosis led to definitions that are not fit for purpose, as acidic ruminal conditions solely characterized by ruminal pH determination at a single point fail to reflect the complexity of the condition. Use of a model based on integrated ruminal measures, including VFA, ammonia, lactic acid, and pH, for evaluating ruminal acidosis is fit for purpose, as indicated by meeting postulates for assessing metabolic disease, but requires a method to simplify application in the field. Although it is likely that this model, which we have termed the Bramley acidosis model (BAM), will be refined, the critical value in the model is that it demonstrates that ruminal acidosis is much more than ruminal pH. Disease, milk yield, and milk composition are more associated with the BAM than rumen pH alone. Two single VFA, propionate and valerate, are sensitive and specific for SRA, especially when compared with rumen pH. Even with the use of such a model, astute evaluations of the condition, whether in experimental or field circumstances, will be aided by ancillary measures that can be used in parallel or in series to enhance diagnosis and interpretation. Sensing methods, including rumination detection, behavior, milk analysis, and passive analysis of rumen function, have the potential to improve the detection of SRA; however, these may advance more rapidly if SRA is defined more broadly than by ruminal pH alone. Chinese rice wine (Huangjiu) is a traditional fermented wine in China. The biogenic amines are the important index during its fermentation. This study investigated the changes in biogenic amine content and its formation during fermentation of Chinese rice wine, and analyzed the correlation between the physicochemical and biological factors of Chinese rice wine and the production of biogenic amines. Results showed that, during the pre-fermentation stage (stage I), the content of biogenic amine was significantly negatively correlated with sugar level and acidity, and was significantly positively correlated with amino acid concentration. The maximum biogenic amine concentration in Chinese rice wine was 36.79 mg/L. During the post-fermentation stage (stage II), a significant increase in the content of lactic acid bacteria was positively correlated with biogenic amine content. The maximum biogenic amine concentration in Chinese rice wine was 22.50 mg/L. The high amino acid concentration and lactic acid bacteria concentration in the fermentation process enhance the biogenic amine formation. Summary: This study explores using pitomba peel and seeds to obtain a natural extract with high antioxidant capacity, employing extraction techniques with eutectic solvents combined with agitation and temperature control. The analysis revealed that, for the extraction with pitomba peel residues, the average levels of phenolic compounds did not show significant differences except for the extraction with ethanol. In contrast, the extractions performed with pitomba seeds showed significant differences, with the combination of choline chloride with lactic acid and choline chloride with glycerol providing the highest phenolic compound values. For flavonoids, the highest amount was obtained with the extraction using L‐proline and levulinic acid for the pitomba peel and ethanol and choline chloride with levulinic acid for the pitomba seeds. The results of the DPPH and FRAP assays indicate that, for antioxidant activity, the highest DPPH value was achieved with the extraction of pitomba peel using choline chloride with glycerol. In contrast, for pitomba seeds, elevated values were found with choline chloride with glycerol and choline chloride with levulinic acid. In the FRAP assay, the averages between L‐proline with levulinic acid and choline chloride with glycerol were not significantly different, showing high values. For pitomba seeds, the averages between ethanol and choline chloride with glycerol were also not significantly different and showed the highest obtained values. The results demonstrate that the extracts obtained from pitomba residues are rich in valuable compounds for potential applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. This study examines the morphology and various thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties of polylactic acid (PLA)-based nanobiocomposites. The objective of this investigation is to evaluate the potential of modified Algerian clay as a nanofiller through an examination of the characteristics of PLA/Mag-CTA and PLA/CMC nanobiocomposites with varying levels of prepared fillers. This study is concerned with the synthesis of poly(lactic acid)/Maghnite-CTA (PLA/Mag-CTA) and poly(lactic acid)/microcrystalline cellulose (CMC) nanobiocomposites, with two distinctive catalysts and organic reinforcements produced in solution. The outcomes of the various techniques employed demonstrate that PLA nanobiocomposites exhibit a mixed morphology, comprising intercalation and exfoliation. The results from the diverse techniques used show that the PLA nanobiocomposites developed have a mixed intercalated-exfoliated morphology. The dispersion of the Maghnite-CTA filler and microcrystalline cellulose was enhanced during the production of the various materials, as well as the presence of aggregates at high levels. The best rheological performance, corresponding to the optimal dispersion of the nanofiller, was observed for a low quantity of organic filler. Thermal behavior properties were significantly enhanced with the incorporation of the two nanofillers. Analysis by steric exclusion chromatography showed that the fillers used in the nanobiocomposite synthesis increased the average molecular weights of the PLA chains, while the polydispersity index remained constant. Today, economic consumption of biodegradable polymers is significant in many applications. Thermoplastic starch (TPS) and polylactic acid (PLA) are two bio-based and biodegradable polymers that are increasingly being used to replace the petrochemical-based polymers. Adding TPS into a PLA matrix can also decrease material cost and increase its biodegradation rate. This work tested the printability of TPS/PLA films. For this purpose, TPS was first prepared by the addition of sorbitol and glycerol as softeners using an internal mixer at 140°C. Then, it was added to the PLA in internal mixer at 180°C. To analyse the data, design of the experiment was done according to Box–Behnken design (BBD) method for three variables in three levels by using Design-Expert software, which led to the preparation of 15 samples. Individual and interactive effects of wt% of PLA in TPS/PLA mixture, the wt% of starch in TPS, and the ratio of sorbitol to glycerol on the tensile properties, thermal properties and printing properties (optical density) were investigated. Solvent-based flexographic ink was applied to test printability of the films. Rising concerns over fossil fuel depletion and plastic pollution have driven research into biodegradable alternatives, such as polylactic acid (PLA). Microbial fermentation is preferred for lactic acid production due to its ability to yield enantiomerically pure lactic acid, which is essential for PLA synthesis, unlike the racemic mixture from chemical synthesis. However, commercial lactic acid production using first-generation feedstocks faces challenges related to cost and sustainability. Macroalgae offer a promising alternative with their rapid growth rates and carbon capture capabilities. This review explores recent technological advancements in macroalgae physicochemical characterization, optimization of fermentation conditions, and innovative pretreatment methods to enhance sugar conversion rates for L-LA production. It also covers downstream processes for L-LA recovery, presenting a complete macroalgal biorefinery system. Environmental impacts and economic prospects are assessed through exergy and techno-economic analyses. By valorizing macroalgae detritus, this study underscores its potential to support a sustainable biorefinery industry, addressing economic feasibility and environmental impact. Polylactic acid (PLA) models of normal human femoral diaphyses were designed using three‐dimensional (3D) printing technology to create inexpensive, accessible, and reproducible specimens for flexural biomechanical studies. These models were subjected to three‐point bending and their response to loading was characterized. The anisotropic mechanical behavior of the 3D‐printed femurs and the influence of printing orientations, infill density, wall layers, resolution, and other printing parameters were explored to develop a design space. The objective of the design space was set to emulate the flexural biomechanical response of the normal human femur bones. Results show the 3D‐printed PLA diaphyseal femurs with 5% infill density, two–four wall layers, and a resolution of 200 µm resulted in a flexural strength of 184.8 ± 8.18 MPa. Models with 20% infill density and six wall layers resulted in a flexural modulus of 18.54 ± 0.543 GPa. These results emulate the biomechanical response of the normal human femur, as determined by historical target values derived from prior cadaveric and 3D printing data. With further research, inclusive of modeling the proximal and distal femur and more comprehensive biomechanical testing, 3D‐printed femurs may ultimately serve as a cheap, accessible biomechanical resource for surgeons and researchers. The discovery of nitric oxide's role in biological processes like platelet function, vasodilation, cell permeability, and inflammation has advanced our understanding of organic nitrate therapy's hemodynamic and nonhemodynamic effects. Short-term use of organic nitrates prevents left ventricular enlargement and infarct expansion. However, information on their long-term impact on LV remodeling in post-acute cardiac dysfunction patients is limited. In this study, we utilized an innovative active hydrogel with gelatin (Gel)/polyethylene glycol (PEG)/polylactic acid (PLA) encapsulating gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)-based drug delivery system for the sustained release of nitroglycerin (NTG). Gel/PEG/PLA/NTG/AuNPs hydrogel-based system is a non-transplant surgical method that can adhere to the surface of the heart and deliver the drug directly to the epicardium. Cardiac dysfunction was induced by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery. Echocardiograms were used to study the pre- and post-operative hemodynamics. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Masson's trichrome stain (MTS) staining revealed that the acute myocardial infarction (AMI) rats' group had irregularly shaped fibers and a lack of transverse striations, whereas Gel/PEG/PLA/NTG/AuNPs hydrogel group showed significant improvement. Rats in the Gel/PEG/PLA hydrogel group demonstrated marked vasodilation, compared to the AMI group. Mechanistically, we determined that hydrogel disrupts the initiation of post-cardiac dysfunction via inhibiting Wnt/β-catenin transcriptional activation. Hence, the Gel/PEG/PLA/NTG/AuNPs hydrogel group effectively protected against ischemic injury and inflammation in AMI, demonstrating a novel method for treating acute cardiac dysfunction. Lanthanides were tested (Ce3+, Er3+, and Yb3+) as catalysts to produce lactic acid (LA) from the monosaccharides present in corn stover (glucose, xylose, and arabinose) resulting in ytterbium being the most active. A MW-heated system led to similar LA yield as a conventionally heated pressurized system. The maximum value of LA yield was 40% at 240 °C after 20 min of isothermal treatment regardless the starting monosaccharides, which allowed to propose a similar LA production route based on the products profile determined along time for the three monosaccharides. Temperature and time determined the product profile, observing furfural degradation at severity factors higher than 3.5, while values higher than 5.5 were needed to observe LA degradation. By increasing temperature, catalyst solubility decreased, increasing its presence in the solid residue after treatment. Xylan conversion to LA was similar as for xylose, but lower yield was obtained from microcrystalline cellulose. Biodegradable thermoplastic polylactic acid (PLA) has recently been limited in its broader development and application due to its high cost. Therefore, it is crucial to develop low-cost and high-performance PLA-based composites by adding fillers. In this study, surface-modified incinerated sewage sludge ash (M-OH-ISSA) was employed as a reinforcing filler in PLA to prepare PLA/M-OH-ISSA thermoplastic composites with varying M-OH-ISSA ratios (10–30 wt%), and the mold mechanism for the PLA/M-OH-ISSA composites was explored. The surface of incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) was modified to improve interfacial adhesion by NaOH alkali treatment and KH570 silane grafting, which successfully grafted silane groups onto the surface of the ISSA and converted the surface from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, strengthening the compatibility between the ISSA and PLA. The effects of the M-OH-ISSA content on the mechanical and thermal properties of the PLA composites were investigated. The mechanical test results showed that the tensile and flexural properties of the 15 wt% M-OH-ISSA-filled PLA composites were excellent compared to those of pure PLA, with strengths of 33.67 MPa and 73.70 MPa, respectively, which are all 1.6 times greater than those of pure PLA. Morphological analysis via SEM indicated that the composites with 15 wt% M-OH-ISSA exhibited good adhesion between the M-OH-ISSA and the matrix. The thermal performance of the composites was determined by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG). The results showed that the crystallinity of the composites increased with increasing M-OH-ISSA content and that the thermal stability between 290°C and 400°C decreased slightly with increasing M-OH-ISSA. However, the composites have good thermal stability near 200°C and do not undergo thermal degradation if processed at this temperature. To expand the potential applications of polylactic acid (PLA), it is essential to incorporate a highly flexible polymer into the blend. Polycaprolactone (PCL) is an ideal choice due to its ductility and biodegradability. However, blending PLA with PCL resulted in weak mechanical properties. To address this issue, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and nano calcium carbonate (NCC) were introduced to enhance the adhesion at the interface between PLA and PCL. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images provided clear visual evidence of the impact of GMA and NCC on the morphology of the blend. Both components were effective in reducing the size of the dispersed PCL phase, shrinking it to approximately half the size of the original blend. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that GMA caused a reaction between its epoxy group and the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of PLA and PCL. This reaction led to the formation of strong peaks in the 6.5 to 7.5 range in 1H NMR, as well as peaks at 76 and 139 ppm in 13C NMR. These findings were further corroborated by FT-IR, which demonstrated that NCC, despite its surface coating, did not create any new bonds. Rheological studies further demonstrated the positive effects of GMA and NCC. Both the storage modulus (G′) and complex viscosity (η*) of the blends increased, showing improved post-processing performance. Investigation into the shear-thinning behavior of the uncompatibilized blends revealed that NCC caused a significant decrease in complex viscosity at higher frequencies, indicating the disruption of the nanoparticle network. The power-law slope was measured to be 0.62. In contrast, the blend containing the compatibilizer demonstrated a moderate decrease in viscosity, with a power-law slope of 0.36. To analyze the behavior of the PLA/PCL blends in the presence of compatibilizers and nanoparticles at intermediate frequencies, the Palirene model was utilized. Objective: This trial was conducted to explore the impact of different wilting time of Italian ryegrass (IRG) in the field on the nutritional quality and fermentation characteristics of its silage. Methods: The harvested IRG was directly wilted in the field for 0 day (W0), 1 day (W1), 2 days (W2), and 3 days (W3), respectively, and tedded every 6 hours. And the preserved IRG was sampled at 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 45 days after ensiling and three replicates per treatment. Results: With the extension of wilting, the dry matter (DM) content and pH value of wilted IRG gradually increased (p<0.05). There was a downward trend in; neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and hemicellulose with the increase of wilting time, but only W2 and W3 were significantly different from W0 (p<0.05). Crude protein (CP), in vitro DM digestibility), total digestible nutrients (TDN), and relative feed value decreased significantly with the increase of wilting time (p<0.05), except for W1. After 45 days of ensiling, W1 had the highest CP, TDN, and the lowest ADF and NDF. During ensiling, the increase of acetic acid and the decrease of WSC in W0 and W1 were similar, but the accumulation rate of lactic acid in W0 was faster than that in W1, resulting in the lowest pH value in W0. After 5 days of ensiling, the ratio of lactic acid to acetic acid in W1 stabilized at around 3:1, while W0 kept changing. Conclusion: Italian ryegrass that wilted in the field for 1 day effectively improved the dynamic changes in CP, TDN, ADF, and NDF and fermentation quality of silage. The exploitation of deep-eutectic solvents (DESs) offered a potential substitute for water-based solutions when it came to leaching REEs from phosphogypsum (PG). The REEs leachate from PG obtained by DES which comprised choline chloride (ChCl) and diglycolic acid (DGA) or lactic acid (LA). The data offered a successful method for REEs leaching by DES ChCl:LA. The optimal leaching conditions included 150 min, 70°C, ChCl:LA 1:2 molar ratio of 800 rpm, a 15:1 L/S ratio, and 15% additional water. Cyanex 923 was used to assess REEs extraction from DES leachate. The best parameters were 900 rpm, 0.8 M Cyanex/toluene at 25°C, with 15 min extraction time and 1/1 A/O ratio. The REEs were stripped from the REEs/Cyanex after equilibrating for 20 minutes using 0.7 M citric acid, 1/2 A/O ratio, and 1000 rpm at 25°C. The RE ions precipitated from the obtained stripping solution by 30% oxalic acid and pH 1. The RE oxalate was precipitated and then burned at 700°C to gain RE oxide. The RE oxide powder was subjected to analysis to determine the REEs; it was possible to determine that the REEs were 80.98% in RE oxide concentrate, resulting in a purity of 94.76%. Sugar compounds are an important part of biomass resources, and their catalytic conversion can prepare a series of platform compounds, such as lactic acid and polyols. One of the key steps is the isomerization of aldoses to ketoses. However, finding a simple method to efficiently convert aldoses to ketoses remains a great challenge. Herein, we report a core–shell structured catalyst, Pt/SiO2@Mg(OH)2, for the efficient conversion of xylose as well as the further conversion of xylose to xylulose. Xylose, a five-carbon sugar unit with the highest content in biomass, was used as the object of study to determine the optimal reaction conditions in the aqueous system by adjusting the loading amount of Mg(OH)2, catalyst addition, reaction temperature, and reaction time: In the optimum aqueous conditions, the yield of xylulose was 23.61%. We also investigated the effect of solvent effects on the hydrothermal reaction and determined the optimal solvent ratio, the yield of xylulose reached 31.74% at H2O:MeOH (8:2). Bone tissue engineering (BTE) applications and regenerative strategies have been used to improve the clinical practice of repairing large bone defects associated with surgical resections, congenital malformations, and trauma. The scaffolds are designed to stimulate a biological response, including cell interactions, and guide tissue regeneration by functioning as artificial biomimetic extracellular matrixes. Polymeric biomaterials are suitable for bone tissue engineering since they possess both chemical and physical properties, enabling the control of shape, morphology, and biodegradability, which makes them suitable for bone regeneration and tissue engineering applications. In vivo animal models were studied for collagen, chitosan, poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and high density polyethylene (HDPE), the four most common polymers employed in bone tissue engineering. Through analysis of the results of this review, the in vivo studies can provide a large-scale evaluation of the possibility of achieving optimal bone-forming capabilities and regenerative capabilities. In this research, tiny MoO 2 nanoparticles of 10 nm in diameter were prepared through a straightforward solvothermal approach with a specific ratio of oleylamine and oleic acid as stabilizers. The critical factor in the synthesis process was found to be the ratio of oleylamine to oleic acid. Moreover, a two-phase interface assembly method facilitated the uniform deposition of MoO 2 onto CdS nanorods. Due to the localized plasmonic-thermoelectric effect on the surface of MoO 2 along with its abundant oxygen vacancies, the composite catalyst exhibited outstanding photo-utilization efficiency and an abundance of active sites. The CdS-MoO 2 composite displayed a unique photochemical property in transforming lactic acid into pyruvic acid and generating hydrogen simultaneously. After exposure to artificial sunlight for 4 h, significant values of 4.7 and 3.7 mmol⋅g−1⋅h−1 were achieved for hydrogen production and pyruvic acid formation, respectively, exceeding CdS alone by 3.29 and 4.02-fold, while the selectivity of pyruvic acid was 95.68 %. Recently, mushroom production and cultivation of various bioactive components through submerged cultivation has drawn considerable attention of global community. Submerged cultivation is far more effective than fruiting bodies in bioreactors during which culture conditions can also be controlled. Various studies entail that it is possible to grow a wide variety of edible mushroom strains in submerged liquid cultures that yield a high content of biomass and bioactive substances, including enzymes, lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins, by using such an approach that is safe for use in the food industry. This review will focus on the traditional methods and enlists various bioactive compounds that were frequently derived from the edible mushrooms while providing an extensive explaination about the submerged cultivation methods. In addition, the current study will also highlight the application of various culture conditions such as an increase or decrease in pH, inoculum sizes, temperature, dissolved oxygen content, and their subsequent impact on biomass production and the total yield of bioactive compounds. Current study would plausibly lead to the further exploitation of mushroom mycelia by the food industries and thus would definitely find their appropriate application as nutraceuticals, food supplements, and flavoring agents. Application and efficacy of lacto-fermentation and submerged cultivation would definitely produce safe, high-quality yield of biomass and bioactive substances by increasing the concentration of the amino acids that give food its umami flavors or by calculating the desired level of substances or components which make food inedible. This would encourage the food authorities to authorize mushroom-based high-quality bioactive substances encompassing nutraceutical content, which is crucial, most particularly for the food industries. Carbon fibre is cost prohibitive due to fossil-based raw materials and the substantial energy needed for manufacturing. Although lignin-derived oil palm biomass has been synthesised, its fundamental properties render it an unsuitable carbon fibre precursor. This study aimed to obtain lignin-derived oil palm biomass (DES-L) using choline chloride (ChCl) and lactic acid (LA) at various molar ratios (1:2–1:10) and to evaluate its fundamental properties in relation to its viability as a carbon fibre precursor at different reaction times (3–6 h) and temperatures (130–170 °C). ChCl-based DES produced high DES-L yields (74.94–98.42%) and solubilities (49.42–66.12%), with comparable phenolic hydroxyl group content (1.37–6.53 mmol/g). A higher LA molar ratio provides more active protons, facilitating the proton-catalysed breakdown of lignin-polysaccharide complexes, resulting in higher solubility and yield. The high lignin purity (81.21–89.97%) demonstrates that ChCl-based DES effectively cleaves the lignin-carbohydrate linkages, resulting in low carbohydrate content but high particulate matter (6.46–14.33%) due to cellulose degradation. The inverse correlation between volatile matter (16.25–36.53%) and ash content (0.99–3.00%) was due to the formation of volatile macromolecules from the highly branched polymer structure of lignin. The low carbon content (42.88–56.83%) diminishes the carbonaceous nature of the DES-L. Lignin has a sufficiently high average molecular weight (2221–5980 g/mol) and glass transition temperature (72.62–80.87 °C) as a carbon fibre precursor. Overall, the lignin-derived oil palm biomass obtained in this study using ChCl-based DES demonstrated preliminary feasibility as a carbon fibre precursor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditional poly(lactic acid) (PLA) dyeing with synthetic disperse dyes in water medium presents a significant environmental risk since it consumes a large amount of chemicals and generates dyeing wastewater. In order to comply with the demands of clean production and sustainable development, a dispersant-free solvent dyeing system was developed by employing decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) as dyeing medium and microbial prodigiosins prepared through surfactant-assisted fermentation as natural disperse dye. The influence of D5 medium on PLA fiber and prodigiosins was investigated. It was discovered that D5 could swell PLA fibers by penetrating the inside of the fibers while having no adverse effects on prodigiosins. The dyeing parameters were subsequently optimized in terms of K/S value and strength loss. The results indicated that PLA fabrics dyed in a modified solvent dyeing system containing 250% (owf) water exhibited the highest K/S value and minimum strength loss when they were dyed at dyeing temperature 105 °C, aqueous pH7.0 and dyeing time 30 min. The colorfastness of solvent dyed fabrics were equivalent to that of aqueously dyed fabrics in terms of rubbing and washing. The solvent dyeing process developed in this study effectively reduces the consumption of dispersant agents, being conducive to facilitate the further development of sustainable PLA industry. Microplastics (MPs) and pesticides are two pollutants of concern in agricultural soils. 3,5-dichloroaniline (3,5-DCA), a highly toxic metabolite of dicarboximide fungicides, commonly co-exists with MPs and poses a risk to the environment and food safety. Batch adsorption and soil incubation experiments were employed to investigate the effects of polyethylene (PE) and polylactic acid (PLA) MPs on the environmental behavior of 3,5-DCA in soil. Chive (Allium ascalonicum) was used as the experimental plant, a pot experiment was conducted to examine the effects of individual or combined exposure to MPs and 3,5-DCA on plant 3,5-DCA bioaccumulation, growth characteristics, and phytotoxicity. The results showed that PE- and PLA-MPs increased the adsorption capacity of soil to 3,5-DCA and prolonged the degradation half-life of 3,5-DCA by 6.24 and 16.07 d, respectively. Two MPs partially alleviated the negative effects of 3,5-DCA on the root length and fresh weight of chives, while PE-MPs had a positive and dose-dependent impact on the contents of photosynthetic pigment in chive leaves. Co-exposure to 3,5-DCA and MPs increased residues of 3,5-DCA in soil and chive roots but had no significant effect on 3,5-DCA residues in chive stems or leaves. Moreover, 3,5-DCA residues in PLA-MP soil were consistently higher than those in PE-MP soil. Conclusively, MPs altered the 3,5-DCA adsorption and degradation behavior in soil, as well as its bioaccumulation in chives. During fabrication of complex polymeric structure engineers need to compromise either accuracy or duration which hinders the production efficiency of the industries. Additive manufacturing is an evolving technology with great potential to achieve enhanced mechanical properties of materials over other manufacturing processes. Additive manufacturing effectively reduces lead time thus providing faster fabrication. A prevalent additive manufacturing method to fabricate polymeric structure is fused deposition modelling. Composite material generally possesses better mechanical properties than non-composite material. Polylactic acid is one of popular feedstocks used to fabricate components through fused deposition modelling. Functionally graded materials are structured to possess different mechanical properties towards a graded direction. Hence, this study aims to provide insight to the characteristics of the functionally graded materials structure fabricated with wood polymer composite and ceramic-reinforced polylactic acid. Mechanical tests such as tensile (smooth and V-notch), compression, flexural, impact, and hardness (Shore D hardness) are conducted for functionally graded materials structure and the extracted results are compared with the characteristics of wood polymer composite and ceramic-reinforced polylactic acid materials. The tensile strength of the functionally graded materials structure is found superior to weaker composites (wood polymer composite) and comparable to resilient materials (ceramic-reinforced polylactic acid). Microscopical examinations are carried out for the fabricated structure to ensure the quality. The fractured surfaces are examined using optical microscope to evaluate the mode of failures. The microscopic evaluation conducted for fabricated and fractured structure indicates robust bonding within and between (functionally graded materials interface) wood polymer composite and ceramic-reinforced polylactic acid structure. Attempts were made to produce osteoinductive three- dimensional (3D) porous scaffolds with interconnected pores. Among the synthetic polymers, poly (ε- caprolactone) (PCL) was proven to be highly biocompatible and osteoinductive. However, it suffers from shrinkage due to high crystallinity and fast crystal growth. Here, we used polylactic acid, which is a rigid, low- crystalline and biocompatible polymer, as the major phase blended with PCL comprising the minor phase. However, these two polymers are highly incompatible and the PCL minor phase tend to form large droplets, distributing it unevenly throughout the continuous phase. Here, we used cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), as a hydrophilic and osteoinductive nanoparticle, to suppress coalescence of PCL droplets and a tri-block copolymer of PCL-PEG-PCL (BCP) to reduce the interfacial tension of the two phases. 3D foams were prepared using thermally-induced phase separation and salt leaching and the porosity and pore size was tuned using CNC and BCP. The biocompatibility of the 3D scaffolds was evaluated by MG63 cell lines and the results indicated high biocompatibility. The scaffolds were also quite successful at inducing the osteogenesis of hMSCs. The specimen containing 10% BCP and 1.0% CNC had the highest calcium deposition with the highest expression of bone- specific genes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the present, the spent Pleurotus substrate (SPS), which is a lignocellulosic waste from the industrial production of mushrooms, is poorly valorized and mostly landfilled. Considering the large amount of SPS that is required to produce one kilo of mushrooms and its hazard to the environment if not properly disposed of, finding means to valorize this waste is of utmost importance. This work proposes the valorization of SPS through the extraction of cellulose nanofibers (NC-SPS), by applying several bleaching and alkaline hydrolysis treatments followed by microfluidization. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of NC-SPS showed that most of the lignin, hemicelluloses, and other impurities were removed after the treatments of SPS. The transmission electron microscopy analysis of NC-SPS showed the presence of nanofibers with an average width of 24.5 ± 14.9 nm, XRD indicated an increase in crystallinity from 60% for SPS to 71% for NC-SPS, while TGA showed that the onset degradation temperature increased with about 43 °C after the treatments. The new NC-SPS are similar to the nanocellulose extracted from wood and can replace it in various applications. In this work, NC-SPS were tested as modifiers for poly(lactic acid) (PLA) leading to an increase in its crystallinity, Young's modulus (of up to 57%), and storage modulus, while preserving its thermal stability and transparency. The objective of this study is to develop the easy-to-clean and fouling resistant polylactic acid (PLA) ultrafiltration membranes made of stimuli-responsive materials. Here, N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) was polymerized on montmorillonite (MMT) to create a thermosensitive MPNI nanocomposite. FTIR, XRD, TGA, SEM, TEM and DLS results confirmed the successful polymerization of NIPAM on MMT. Thermosensitive ultrafiltration PLA membranes were fabricated by incorporating varying amounts of MPNI, ranging from 0.0 to 1.0 wt%. The modified membranes exhibited improved water uptake, porosity, mechanical strength, hydrophilicity, and pure water flux by incorporating MPNI. Furthermore, they demonstrated decreased hydrophilicity and water uptake in response to changes in water temperature. During humic acid (HA) filtration with a 10 ppm concentration, PLA-MPNI-0.75 membrane showed higher water flux (93 L. m2. h− 1) and better HA rejection (75%) compared to neat PLA. Moreover, employing a thermosensitive cleaning method, particularly by-passing warm water (above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of NIPAM through the membrane, resulted in improved in flux recovery ratio (FRR) for the PLA-MPNI membranes, while PLA was regenerated at around 40%. Poly(hydroxyalkanoates) (PHAs) are emerging as sustainable materials in packaging and medical device industries. Nevertheless, the high cost and the need to improve the mechanical properties have limited their widespread use. Blending with other bio-based polymers, such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA), has been proposed in previous studies. This study investigates the effects of temperature, azodicarbonamide (AZ, foaming agent), boron nitride (BN, filler), and multilayer film/foam coextrusion on the properties of a blend containing an amorphous PHA and PLA. The effect of twin-screw micro-compounder temperature (185 °C & 205 °C) and BN concentrations of 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 wt% (185 °C) on the properties of the PHA/PLA blend were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and tensile testing. Design of experiments (DoE) was used to find the optimal concentrations of AZ and BN (205 °C) using JMP® software. The response surface analysis predicted an optimal design based on the target response levels (modulus, tensile strength, strain at break, and toughness). This formulation was prepared and characterized using DSC, TGA, tensile, and melt flow index (MFI) measurements. Finally, this formulation was processed via film/foam coextrusion and examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and density measurements. This study demonstrated that AZ and BN can be used to manipulate the mechanical properties and crystallinity of PHA/PLA blends, while reducing the overall material cost via density reduction (20–21% for the optimal formulation). BACKGROUND: Tobacco stalk, the main waste from tobacco planting, was used as raw material to produce levulinic acid, one of the most important platform chemicals. It was reported that steam explosion was an efficient method to treat lignocellulose to hydrolyze the hemicellulose component. Oxidation treatment combined with catalysis of Al2(SO4)3 proved to be efficient for the conversion of cellulose to levulinic acid in our recent report. Here, tobacco stalk was first treated by steam explosion, and then the solid residue was oxidized and converted to levulinic acid in the presence of Al2(SO4)3. RESULTS: A xylo‐oligosaccharide yield of 6.6 g 100 g−1 was obtained from tobacco stalk via steam explosion. 15.4 g 100 g−1 (39.6 mol%) yield of levulinic acid was obtained from oxidized tobacco stalk in water at 180 °C in 5 h using Al2(SO4)3 as a catalyst. As high as 20.8 g 100 g−1 (53.5 mol%) yield of levulinic acid can be obtained using NaCl as a co‐catalyst. CONCLUSION: Steam explosion was efficient for the depolymerization of the hemicellulose component of tobacco stalk to xylo‐oligosaccharide. A simple salt of Al2(SO4)3 showed good catalytic activity for conversion of oxidized tobacco stalk to levulinic acid. Nicotine in tobacco stalk promoted the formation of lactic acid. The growing interest in biodegradable scaffolds for bone regeneration created a need to investigate new materials suitable for scaffold formation. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a polymer commonly used in biomedical engineering, e.g. in tissue engineering as a biodegradable material. However, the mechanical behavior of PLA along its degradation time is still not explored well. For this reason, the mechanical properties of PLA scaffolds affected by incubation in physiological medium needs to be investigated to show the potential of PLA to be used as a material for biodegradable scaffold formation. The purpose of this research is to determine the mechanical properties of PLA scaffolds before and after incubation, and to apply constitutive material models for further behavior prediction. Two sets of PLA scaffolds were printed by the 3D printer "Prusa i3 MK3S" and sterilized by ultraviolet light and ethanol solution. The first set of specimens was incubated in DMEM (Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium) for 60, 120, and 180 days maintaining 36.5 °C temperature. The mechanical properties of the scaffolds were determined after performing the compression test in the "Mecmesin MultiTest 2.5-i" testing stand with a force applied at two different speed modes. The obtained data was curve fitted with the hyperelastic material models for a model suitability study. The second set of specimens was incubated in PBS (Phosphate Buffered Saline) for 20 weeks and used in a polymer degradation study. The obtained results show that the mechanical properties of PLA scaffolds do not decrease during incubation in physiological medium for a predicted new bone tissue formation period, though hydrolysis starts at the very beginning and increases with time. PLA as a material seems to be suitable for the use in bone tissue engineering as it allows to form biocompatible and biodegradable scaffolds with high mechanical strength, required for effective tissue formation.
