This article examines the use of non-English resources in academic libraries, with a focus on reference and instruction. Academic librarians from the United States and Canada were surveyed about their perceptions regarding the use of non-English resources during reference and instruction duties and the results are considered through a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens. The authors explore literature regarding the dominance of the English language in higher education, scholarly communication, and academic publishing. Library literature is also reviewed, emphasizing reference and instruction services viewed through a critical librarianship or "critlib" lens. These perspectives are applied to the survey results with a discussion of the implications for academic reference and instruction librarians. Our contribution draws on quantitative data from a longitudinal mixed‐methods study to uncover different patterns of social contacts of study abroad (SA) students and the relationship of these social contacts with (a) language use, (b) target language development, and (c) contextual variables. Data were obtained by means of online questionnaires pre, during, and post sojourn. English oral proficiency gains were measured using the Oral Proficiency Interview by Computer (OPIc) test before and after the stay. Latent profile analysis yielded four profiles of social contacts, which differed in terms of the degree of integration into the community of locals or international students. Students with distinct profiles differ significantly with respect to language use but not in terms of language gains. Regression analyses indicate that comparable progress in oral proficiency was made by students across profiles of social contacts and also by those in an English as a lingua franca (ELF) context suggesting that different SA context and networking patterns are conducive to second language (L2) gains. We, 'the five horsewomen' as Anne Turvey named us, are a group of teachers who trained on the PGCE English course at the IOE (2011–2012) and then undertook the MA English Education together. What kind of knowledge informs the practice of English teachers? Recent policy developments, in England and elsewhere, have sought to specify a knowledge base for teachers. Anne Turvey played a key role in the London Association for the Teaching of English (LATE), a voluntary subject network for those involved in the teaching of English that had been founded at the Institute of Education in 1947. As Chair of the Association in the LATE 1990s and well into the 21st century, Anne helped to ensure LATE's continued existence and relevance in the midst of challenging contexts. This article examines the transformation of Australian EAL/D (English as an additional language/dialect) classrooms, transitioning from a monolingual focus on Standard Australian English (SAE) to embracing plurilingual and intercultural approaches in English language and literacy teaching and learning. Employing hermeneutic phenomenological and narrative analyses, the study reflects on the lived experiences of 16 English teachers who learned English as an additional language and migrated to Australia. The research highlights the significance of fluid affective processes, cultural responsiveness, plurilingualism, and intercultural identity development in language and literacy classrooms. Findings emphasise the central role of affect in EAL teaching and its implications for cultural responsiveness and linguistic diversity. The lived experiences of these teachers underscore the transformative potential of diverse teaching strategies that resonate with students on affective and cultural levels. Implications include fostering plurilingual literacy and identity development, promoting global identity, and cultivating intercultural capabilities among learners and educators. Ultimately, the article highlights the paradigm-shifting power of English language and literacy education when enriched with empathy, creativity, and a commitment to linguistic and cultural diversity. This study investigates the impact of social media discourses, espoused by neoliberal and consumerist ideologies, on a language teacher educator's (LTE) identity negotiation. Through a collaborative case study, it examines Hassan's (the second author) experiences with social media in the Iranian English language teaching (ELT) context over three years. The data consist of extensive email discussions and four online meetings between the authors over one year. The analysis of Hassan's narratives reveals dominant social media discourses emphasizing sameness, omniscience, and commercialized luxurious lifestyles. These discourses often equate social media visibility with professional qualifications, pressuring Hassan to conform to trends that conflict with his sense of professionalism and authenticity. Hassan's emotional struggles and identity tensions led to critical reflection and ongoing negotiation of his professional identity. The findings underscore the need for professional development programs that support LTEs in navigating the pressures of self‐branding while maintaining their professionalism. Additionally, the study calls for further research into the long‐term effects of social media on professional identity and well‐being across diverse cultural and institutional contexts. Although language learners' knowledge of second language (L2) speech acts is postulated to be substantially influenced by learner variables, there is little empirical evidence of the influence of pragmatic motivation (PM) and willingness to communicate (WTC). To address this gap, this study sought to investigate the impact of PM and WTC as two important multifaceted learner variables on L2 speech‐act knowledge. The participants included 500 Persian‐speaking learners of English as a foreign language. The researchers developed and validated three instruments for data collection: a multiple‐choice discourse completion task (MDCT) including five common English speech acts, a PM questionnaire, and a WTC questionnaire. Data were collected in two subsequent phases. First, the MDCT was administered, and then the participants filled out the two questionnaires. Data analysis using multiple regression revealed that both PM and WTC significantly predicted L2 speech‐act knowledge. However, PM turned out to be a stronger predictor of this knowledge than WTC. The findings imply that PM and WTC are implicated in L2 pragmatic knowledge and hence language teachers should consider these two variables to help learners enhance their pragmatic acquisition. U.S. National Professional Development (NPD) grants can afford a longitudinal understanding of how teachers learn to support English learners. When NPD projects are completed successively and successfully, they can provide an even greater longitudinal arc of understanding. This article chronicles the designs and lessons learned across five NPD grants between 2002 and 2023. Each grant represents a snapshot in time, presenting a set of assumptions from the field, programmatic innovations, and insights from research outcomes. From highlighting the difference between incremental and radical pedagogical change and what it takes to move beyond individual teacher change to systemic change benefiting multilingual learners, the article outlines the succession of aspirations (capacity building, sustainability, and scalability), experiences, changing conditions, and data points framing lessons learned and new cycles of praxis. This article offers implications for theory, practice, and research. Over decades, the body of research about the experiences and perceptions of prospective teachers of English during their teaching practicum has grown substantially. However, little research is currently available on the role of the wider educational context in shaping the TESOL practicum. The current study attempts to fill this gap by differentiating the wider educational context from the local situational context through providing details and insights about prospective teachers' intricate interactions with their wider educational context. In this study, the researchers used an exploratory qualitative research design. Following analysis of 24 participants' written observation reports collected over a 10‐week period, they conducted a focus group discussion with five participants. Findings revealed four key themes pertaining to the Turkish educational context, showing that several factors beyond the control of prospective teachers inevitably affect their practicum experience. In conclusion, this study delves into the complexity of the TESOL practicum by highlighting the intricate interplay between the wider educational context and prospective teachers' experiences. It is suggested that investigating context‐bound factors and gaining a deeper understanding of the elements that frame prospective teachers' perceptions of their wider educational context could ultimately result in more principled and effective teacher education. The purpose of this article is to share the examination of inclusivity as a paradigm for fostering authenticity and agency (Moore, 2017) among teacher candidates. This framing challenges the notion of inclusion as a tool of meritocracy used to manage learners through expectations that uphold monolingualism, decenter racial histories, and rely on rigid behavior plans. In this work, the authors interrogate the impact inclusion as assimilation has on English learners' authentic ways of knowing and being. Thus, they present a conceptualization of spaces of difference (Agbenyaga & Klibthong, 2012) within the context of an Inclusive Early Childhood Teacher Education (IECTE) program and the objectives of the Preparing Inclusive Early Childhood Educators (PIECE) project. With its rigorous coursework, clinical experiences, multi‐tiered mentorship, and practice‐based professional development, the PIECE project aims to develop inclusive early childhood educators at the preservice and in‐service levels. Infused throughout the PIECE project is an emphasis on cultivating the knowledge and skills needed to provide high‐quality instruction that improves educational outcomes for English learners (ELs). Frameworks of transformative theory and intersectionality perspectives provided the authors with a grounding for the work within the PIECE project community of learners (i.e., teacher candidates, teacher educators, and school district partners). This article summarizes critical concepts of inclusivity centered in the PIECE project work. These concepts include (1) understanding oneself to look beyond; (2) disrupting notions of normalcy and naturalized language; and (3) reconceptualizing inclusivity as a social justice act. Quality partnerships are imperative for successful project implementation. The partnership between project personnel and independent evaluators is often overlooked. In effective partnerships, both the evaluators and the education project management team collectively ensure that educational initiatives are well‐planned, executed, and assessed. This collaborative approach fosters a culture of continuous improvement and accountability, ultimately leading to better educational outcomes for English learner students, educators, and the community. This conceptual article highlights eight elements of an effective project management and evaluator partnership: (1) clear communication and collaboration, (2) goal alignment, (3) early planning for evaluation, (4) multi‐purpose evaluation activities, (5) shared responsibility, (6) feedback loops, (7) transparency, and (8) evaluation capacity building. The authors present these elements through the design, deployment, analysis, and use of the Better English Learners Instruction and Education in Varied Environments (BELIEVE) classroom observation tool. The tool was collaboratively created and deployed across two National Professional Development grants in response to the COVID‐19 pandemic, addressing the need for a tool that could be used in varying learning modes and capture how effectively classroom teachers were teaching academic content and literacy to English learners in elementary and middle schools. The article illustrates how this tool has been used by program personnel to inform the teacher–coach relationship and educate teachers and administrators about best practices, and by the evaluation team to assess the progress of teachers' use of research‐based practices to teach English learners. This article uses an Islamic lens to explore the question, What are the identities, aspirations, and motivations for Pakistani and Muslim women learning English? As Muslim women, the research participants had a strong allegiance to motherhood, with children being a motivating factor in learning English. This study explores how motherhood identities and the Islamic faith intersect in powerful ways for Pakistani British women learning English in the United Kingdom. The way that motherhood identity is conceptualised through the Islamic faith for these learners can be invisible to educational institutions and policymakers. The article offers an alternative narrative by directly engaging with women's lived experiences as language learners, as Muslim women and as mothers, thus contributing knowledge from the perspective of the learners, whose voices are often not heard in TESOL debates. In this study, the authors address the case of STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) content teachers in an English medium instruction (EMI) environment in Kazakhstan to argue that the professional needs and identities of these teachers are considerably different than the specialist English teachers who teach English language skills and grammar. Therefore, STEM teachers require a different language policy response and diagnosis, and should be understood through a different analytical lens. The study draws on qualitative interviews with one EMI expert and 58 STEM content teachers from six cities or regions of Kazakhstan to present an account of the challenges they confront within mainstream schools. Findings suggest that policies force STEM content teachers to take the role of English teachers, although they are not prepared for that role. These teachers emphasize that their main responsibility is to teach course content, not the English language. As a result, they undergo several dilemmas such as professional [dis]investment and identity crisis, linguistic disadvantages, inferiority complexes, and pedagogical and theoretical limitations. Top‐down policies render local teachers and practitioners voiceless and disconnected from policymaking. The authors propose a non‐traditional, participatory, and non‐hierarchical policy framework, where policy actors at different levels collaboratively engage to assess teachers' diverse needs and take contextually informed actions to address the afore‐stated dilemmas and challenges. The significance of social justice in education has become increasingly important, as education plays a crucial role in empowering individuals and fostering a dynamic environment that promotes awareness of social justice issues. This study focuses on exploring social justice education (SJE) within the context of Türkiye, where research in this area is relatively limited, particularly in terms of classroom‐based investigations. This qualitative study adopted the case study design and facilitates as an extracurricular activity focusing on sustainable development goals, given the absence of a predefined curriculum or specific lesson plans for SJE. The study involved 15 students from a state university preparatory English class and utilized diverse online resources. The study's results indicated a significant transformative influence, specifically in enhancing the comprehension of the scope of social justice and fostering critical thinking abilities. Language classroom anxiety is a significant concern for applied linguists and English language teachers. As an affective variable, foreign language anxiety has the potential to harm learners' language learning and performance. While the impact of language anxiety on the academic achievement of learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) has been extensively studied, little research has investigated the coping strategies of teachers to address learners' anxiety. This study aimed to explore such EFL teacher strategies in online English language classes, using a qualitative phenomenological research approach. The study involved in‐depth interviews with 20 teachers selected through theoretical sampling. The researchers used thematic analysis to analyze the interview data. The results revealed three factors that emerged from 24 identified coping strategies: creating a safe environment for EFL learners, utilizing learners' first language (L1), and engaging learners in classroom activities. This study investigates whether Japanese university students' motivation to communicate in English was enhanced through the application of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) practices. Fifty‐three non–English majors took a CLIL English class that utilized massive open online course (MOOC) content for a semester. They gave presentations on the MOOC of their choice after watching lectures for a certain period. A questionnaire on second‐language (L2) willingness to communicate (WTC) and international posture was administered three times throughout the semester. Analysis of variance showed significant effects on the factor having things to communicate, whereas L2 WTC and other elements of international posture did not change significantly. A qualitative analysis of students' comments on classes indicated that allowing students to learn topics of interest to them and giving presentations boosted having things to communicate, intercultural approach‐avoidance tendency, and L2 WTC. Based on these results, the author discusses the importance of students' autonomy in learning topics and the necessity of longitudinal research and increasing opportunities for students to speak English in useful and authentic ways. Testing practices and the construct of English both serve separately and interactionally to promote activities of modernity and coloniality. Tests categorize and rank learning and knowledge in discrete, static ways. The construct of the English language through standardization and other processes upholds linguistic purism ideologies. Such concerns in both areas lead to the guiding question: What and whose purposes are being served with testing in English? In engaging with this question, the author posits that decolonizing approaches to testing and the construct of English are needed. In this article, she presents assessment practices developed within Indigenous learning contexts that can inform general approaches to assessment and language with implications for English language testing. In doing so, the article offers actions toward imaginative and creative reconfigurations of English testing according to epistemologies of communities that have confronted colonialist activities. In this study the author combines translingualism and raciolinguistic perspectives to analyze the language ideologies and idealized listening/reading subject positions that undergird discourses on English language teaching in Pakistan. Drawing on data from national policy documents, the national curriculum for English, and English proficiency assessment reports, he shows how discourses on English as a medium of instruction, the English language curriculum, and assessment in Pakistan are fraught with deficit ideologies that emphasize a particular view of English proficiency that serves as an imaginary line of demarcation between proficient and deficient English teachers and reinforce linguistic and socioeconomic hierarchies. Instead of reified, Anglo‐normative orientations to English proficiency, the author proposes a translingual orientation that places students' multilingual identities at the center of English language teaching (ELT) practices. He concludes with a call for ELT practitioners and critical language scholars to develop organic links between classroom translingualism and political activism in order to dismantle socioeconomic hierarchies. A genre‐based approach to second language (L2) writing instruction has received traction due to its impact on helping L2 students improve their writing skills. This approach to teaching writing is particularly useful for young English language learners (ELLs), as it simultaneously focuses on their English language and writing skills development. Despite this, the genre‐based approach is often criticized for its apparent prescriptiveness. In this article, we make the case that a genre approach to writing instruction is a boon not a barrier to ELLs in elementary contexts. Drawing on the scholarship in early childhood literacy and L2 writing, we posit that a genre approach to writing instruction is helpful to elementary ELLs for the following reasons: (a) it is a phased approach, (b) it provides experiential learning opportunities, (c) it is goal‐oriented, and (d) it helps make students self‐efficacious and autonomous. The increase in the English learner (EL) student population in the United States and these students' placement in U.S. public schools have created high priority demands to address their language and learning needs. General education teachers, however, are often unprepared or underprepared to work with ELs, with limited knowledge and expertise to integrate differentiated instruction (DI) for them. This study examined two elementary teachers' understanding of differentiated instructional practices for EL students in a mainstream setting. Employing qualitative methods and following inductive data analytic processes, the study examined what these elementary teachers say facilitates DI for ELs. The researcher used semi‐structured individual interviews, a joint interview, and photo elicitation as the primary sources of data collection, and documents such as teachers' differentiated lesson plans and statements of teaching philosophy as secondary data sources. Findings revealed that a caring relationship between the teacher and ELs was essential and played a key role in student learning. By building caring relationships, the teachers learned about their EL students' needs and their interests and used that knowledge to implement DI for these students. Furthermore, teachers' proficiency in a language other than English and their metalinguistic awareness to bridge between one language and the other guided the teachers' differentiated instructional practices for their ELs. The continued push to internationalize Korean higher education means that international and Korean students are enrolling in courses that are undergoing dynamic changes that neither group may be prepared for. This research investigated how the experiences of international students and Korean students who attended the same TESOL graduate school assigned identity positions to each other and their professors during such courses. Using positioning theory allowed this qualitative study to illustrate how participants assigned perceived rights and duties to act, know, or believe in accordance with who they believed they, and other people were, on their program. Violations of these perceived rights and duties resulted in assigning negative identity positions that previously were limited in description to vague "tensions" which impacted international student performance. Findings explain how cultural differences connected to language, participation, hierarchy, and friendships were keenly felt by all participants, and the perceived rights and duties that were violated due to these differences reinforced the marginalized identity position some international students felt. The development of Global Citizenship Education (GCE) in China has spurred some transitions in cultural education related to English curriculum development. Notwithstanding researchers have discussed cultural education in the field of English language teaching, there is still a dearth of study in Chinese academia about the diachronic analysis of cultural education with reference to GCE in the National English Curriculum Standards (NECS). To fill the gap, a qualitative study was conducted to examine the extent to which Chinese NECS considers the impact of GCE with regard to cultural education, and how cultural education has transitioned between two NECS during the past decade through qualitative content analysis of themes including orientation of cultural education, Chinese cultural education, global cultural education, transcultural education, and cultural education of English-speaking countries. The findings reveal that critical GCE has not been sufficiently taken into account in NECS, while some transitions associated with inclusivity and diversity were identified regarding cultural education in the new curriculum, which could provide implications for English curriculum development and teachers' practices towards more flexible, dynamic and fluid transcultural communications. In this article I examine the concept of 'gentrification' from its inception to its current varied uses and interpretations. Using the Oxford English Dictionary's third edition illustrative quotations database as a diachronic corpus of English, I employ a corpus-assisted and cognitive linguistics-inspired critical discourse analysis to trace the genealogy of the term within the broader field of related terms. By disentangling the emergence of this ideologically-laden term, the study enhances our understanding of how class-struggle discourse has evolved from the late Middle Ages to the Enlightenment and late-modernity. It is argued that a robust definition of 'gentrification' – which foregrounds the displacement of low-income residents – depends on historicizing the phenomenon, i.e. tracing its roots in concepts, practices and values. • The article traces the genealogy of gentrification , from its origin in related terms to its modern meanings. • It employs a critical discourse analysis, using the OED's illustrative quotations as a diachronic English corpus. • It contextualizes gentrification within class-struggle discourse, as it evolved from the late Middle Ages to today. • It argues for a robust definition of gentrification , emphasizing that displacement is central to its original meaning. Scholars have suggested English classrooms with sufficient context and fun activities to increase English performance and promote learning motivation. With the rapid growth of technology-enhanced learning, virtual reality (VR) has become increasingly popular in English learning. Using VR without a well-designed learning environment, however, may not guide students to focus on the learning content to achieve the learning goals. Hence, this study proposed a self-regulated-based gamified VR learning system to trigger students to monitor their learning process to achieve their learning goals. To examine the effectiveness of the proposed system, a quasi-experiment was conducted in a middle school in China involving three groups: students who adopted the self-regulated-based gamified VR system, students who learned with the gamified VR system, and those who learned with a conventional VR system. The results showed that the self-regulated-based gamified VR system significantly improved the students' English learning performance regarding their English vocabulary and speaking, self-regulation, learning motivation, learning attitudes, and meta-cognition tendency. This study, based on Jiang's (2000. Lexical representation and development in a second language. Applied Linguistics 21(1). 47–77) bilingual lexicon model, investigates the learnability of collocations among 34 Japanese EFL learners and examines the influence of their L1 on such learning. An acceptability judgment task assessed the knowledge of three different types of collocations: English-only collocations that cannot be directly translated into Japanese (e.g., flat rate); congruent collocations that can be translated into Japanese without changing their meaning (e.g., cold tea); and Japanized collocations that are infelicitous in English, but felicitous in Japanese (e.g., yellow voice). After the task, participants translated the collocations and rated the difficulty on a four-point Likert scale. The relationship between the accuracy of these collocations and the translation difficulty rating scores was analyzed using mixed-effects logistic regression modeling to assess L1 influence. The results showed that with increasing L2 proficiency, learners tend to regard congruent and English-only collocations as acceptable, but even highly proficient learners did not fully reject the Japanized collocations. This suggests that as L2 proficiency increased, participants learned to accept felicitous collocations but did not learn to reject Japanized infelicitous ones. In addition, the influence of L1 was evident in English-only and Japanized collocations and could not be avoided by those with increasing proficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to compare the comprehension of second language (L2) English articles by native speakers of Korean, an article-less language, and by Korean learners of English as an L2 and Spanish as a third language (L3). The participants were 22 adult learners with advanced overall proficiency in L2 English and L3 Spanish. They completed two tasks, an online self-paced reading task and an offline acceptability rating task. The findings showed that both the trilingual and the bilingual groups relied on definiteness in distinguishing English articles as native speakers do. The findings related to the trilingual group were predicted by the morphological congruency hypothesis, but those related to the bilingual group were against the predictions of the fluctuation hypothesis. A comparison between the two non-native groups showed that the trilingual group had a higher sensitivity to distinguish English articles than the bilingual group, which provides evidence for positive backward transfer from the L3 to the L2 in article comprehension by learners of English whose L1 is article-less, such as Korean. Affect plays a significant role in language teaching and learning and in use of languages, and this includes the phenomenon of linguistic shame. Although shame is considered personal by many, its origins are social; linguistic shame is inextricably connected to language use as a social practice. In this paper, we focus on English language teacher education in settings outside the Anglosphere where English is taught and learned as an additional language, in which pre-service English teachers are generally also learners of English. Awareness and understanding of linguistic shame within language teacher education in such settings has implications for participation in the learning of pre-service teachers. Drawing on data from pre-service English teacher education in the non-Anglophone setting of Sri Lanka, we discuss the understanding of linguistic shame and shaming as a social practice, awareness of and responses to it in teacher education classrooms, and the implications. Teacher contingency, in which teachers adapt their support to the learner's level of understanding is assumed to be the distinguishing characteristic of scaffolding. Yet, classroom studies on the topic scarcely exist. The current study examined the process of contingency in classroom settings. Three novice and three experienced English language teachers were video‐recorded to compile a 9‐h corpus. The model of contingent teaching was used to code the different stages of scaffolding. Conversation analysis was applied to provide an emic perspective of each stage. The results indicated different contingent and non‐contingent teaching patterns for novice and experienced teachers. The non‐contingent teaching of novice teachers was characterized by skipping the diagnosis stage, failing to adapt the support to the learners' level of understanding by using high‐support moves, and failing to check learners' understanding. The experienced teachers mainly diagnosed their learners' understanding, checked their diagnosis, and used a wider array of strategies to provide interventions. This study investigates how prepositional phrases within English noun phrases (e.g., the studentof physicsfrom Italy) are represented and processed by advanced Chinese‐speaking learners of English (henceforth L2ers). Using grammaticality judgment tasks and self‐paced reading tasks, we aim to examine the offline performance and the real‐time processing of English NP‐internal PPs in relation to the head nouns. To this end, two groups of participants were instructed to provide judgments of testing materials and to respond on‐line to experimental stimuli containing the proform one. Results indicate that highly proficient L2ers processed English NP‐internal PPs utterly differently from English controls in that they demonstrated almost no sensitivity to the existence of PPs as complements following one, mostly without consciously distinguishing them from PP adjuncts. To account for L2ers' response patterns, we propose a partial representation hypothesis (PRH), claiming that L2ers tend to disregard intermediate categories containing PP‐complements in English NPs, thus only partially representing syntactic constituents of the target language. What drives provincial students in Korea to choose a college in Seoul? What role does English language learning play in their choices? This study focuses on two young academic migrants to Seoul, Joon and Lynn, to explore how macrocultural phenomena shaped their psychology and contributed to their language education. Previous studies have focused on how the culture of English learning in Korea encourages study abroad. Less understood are nation-level migration trajectories and what drives this form of mobility. Participants' narratives showed different values and opportunities assigned to different regions. 'In-Seoul' discourse and a sense of belonging in the imagined communities impacted their college choices and learning experiences. Both shared that their final goal of moving between regions was to expand their horizons: Joon perceived Seoul as a propitious place for his occupation, and Lynn saw it as an interim place where she could communicate freely with people from different cultural backgrounds. Joon showed voluntary alignment with the ideals sought by colleges in Seoul. Lynn negotiated her way into communities of fluent language speakers and academic pursuits within her major. The interaction between multilingualism and emotions has so far mostly been researched in Northern contexts. The findings obtained suggest that the first language is typically preferred for emotional and mental activities (i.e. 'first language primacy'). In this article, we extend this area of investigation to Africa. We use the Bilingualism and Emotions Questionnaire to probe first language primacy in South Africa, employing a novel analytical approach – multiple correspondence analysis – that allows us to examine the relationship between particular languages and their order of acquisition. Our findings, in part, do reflect favouring of the L1, but with two important qualifications. First, English is also widely used for emotional expression in non-intimate domains. Second, L1 isiXhosa speakers prefer English for mental calculations, and isiXhosa is generally not associated with positive emotional characteristics. We explain these trends in relation to the multilingual context of South Africa, which, like many postcolonial countries, uses a former colonial language extensively in formal institutional spaces. This study used a corpus-informed approach to identify students' key concerns regarding their English language education. To address the complexity of key elements in student evaluations, the data collection involved students' comments from 2012 to 2022, regarding their English language professors across different English-related departments at several institutions on Ratemyprofessors.com. These comments were treated as a corpus which covered more than 1,200 comments with over 70,000 words. The data analyses involved two stages. First, using the KeyBNC software, keyword analysis was performed to identify keywords which suggests the students' areas of concern regarding their English language education. Second, through the USAS tagging system, Wmatrix was implemented to indicate the areas of concern through semantic domains. The findings in both analyses clearly indicated that the students' concerns involved a wide range of areas, with an emphasis placed on grading and course evaluation issues. Overall, this study argued that, despite some comments that appeared superficial, it is important for professors to critically and judiciously consider all aspects of the evaluations as they can be valuable for improving teaching practices. The present study analyses the impoliteness of criticism over social status and distance, incorporating the concept of "levels of imposition." Criticism as a fundamental speech act is commonly used by people in the modern era, either in the digital world or the real world. It usually contains impoliteness if it embodies negative behavior, conveying criticism. This study belonged to an interlanguage pragmatics study and used forty participants from English language learners having Javanese backgrounds. It also applied the role play technique to take data to be analyzed using mixed method analysis. The data showed that the criticizer performed various impoliteness strategies in criticism, considering familiar and unfamiliar relationships in different social status levels. They mainly performed bald-on-record impoliteness and adhered to other strategies such as negative, positive, and mock politeness. Besides that, delivering criticism in high intonation was also perceived as a part of impoliteness. Since the earliest studies on multilingual advantages, it has proved difficult to disentangle language development from general cognition. It remains unclear whether language interdependence is an independent variable or whether observable effects are mediated by cognitive ability. Measurable effects of one language on another typically go hand in hand with differences in cognitive ability. We hypothesise that high cognitive ability produces stronger language interdependence effects than low cognitive ability. We consider this problem in the context of heritage bilingualism in Germany comparing a linguistically mixed cohort of bilingual students (n = 557; i.e. Russian-German, n = 237; Turkish-German, n = 320) with a monolingual German control (n = 852) regarding their proficiencies in the foreign language English. We ask whether the bilingual students manifest an English development that is different from their monolingually socialised peers. We place the students in three different groups depending on their performance in a visual-spatial cognitive ability test. We fit structural equation models to test whether heritage language and German proficiency impact English proficiency differently across these groups while additionally controlling for language background and socio-economic status. Acquisition of oral English verb morphology presents difficulties for bilinguals, learners of EFL and English-speaking monolingual children with specific language impairment. This study aimed to identify challenging English verb inflections among sixth grade speakers of Arabic (N = 85) and Hebrew (N = 86) using an elicited oral narrative task, and EFL L1, L2, L3 skills that support oral production of English morphosyntactic structures and verb inflections. To understand potential universal versus language specific patterns, we compared performance of our sample with that of monolingual children with specific language impairment. Oral narratives were transcribed and analysed for obligatory use of four target tenses to assess the use of verb inflectional morphology. Results indicated that 3rd person singular presented most difficulties for both groups. Present progressive was more difficult for Hebrew speakers, as Arabic utilises this aspectual form in oral modality, while copula was more problematic for Arabic speakers. This error pattern aligns with use of verb inflections by English monolingual SLIs. Notable differences were seen in EFL/ L1/L2/L3 skills supporting EFL verb inflections: Hebrew speakers relied mostly on English reading comprehension, while Arabic speakers drew support from EFL, L1, and Hebrew morphological awareness. Although translanguaging has become a central issue in the multilingual education literature, research on pedagogical translanguaging practices remains underdeveloped. This article describes a study of 72 primary school students (age = 10.68) who participated in an intervention based on translanguaging pedagogies. During the intervention, the boundaries between Basque, Spanish, and English were purposefully and systematically softened to develop the students' communicative competence in the three languages. The study adopted a qualitative approach to explore the pedagogical validity of translanguaging. Focus group discussions were conducted as well as classroom observation in the Basque, Spanish and English language subjects. Qualitative Content Analysis was conducted to analyze the data. In addition, we analyzed translanguaging materials completed by students to gain a better understanding of their performance. The results are discussed in terms of specific translanguaging strategies designed for the intervention and show an increase in students' metalinguistic awareness in the three languages. Students found pedagogical translanguaging useful since it facilitates language comparison and scaffolds understanding and written production. In addition, they found vocabulary strategies particularly beneficial for scaffolding foreign language learning. Despite rich insights that the experience of Global South countries like the Philippines could offer in understanding emerging trends in SLA research, i.e. learning languages other than English (LOTEs), studies conducted in this context are few and far apart. The study explored the motivations and emotions of 389 Filipino learners of LOTEs who accomplished a 76-item questionnaire. Six factors of LOTE motivation and two factors of LOTE emotions were simultaneously analysed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). Composite reliability measures showed that these factors were valid and reliable. Six sets of model fit measures indicated a good fit for the final SEM model. Initial and final direct effects showed that the six factors of LOTE motivation significantly influenced LOTE enjoyment and LOTE anxiety. Against the backdrop of studies dominated by the Japanese and Chinese experiences, the Filipino experience has shown to be equally susceptible to the influences of globalisation and the hegemony of English on learning languages other than English. The final SEM model of LOTE learning among Filipinos is instructive of the multifaceted LOTE motivation, but it also captures the effects of motivational constructs in the 'flowering of emotions' in the context of learners acquiring a language other than English. This study investigates the function and morphosyntax of English Embedded Language (EL) islands in Pashto-English bilingual data, using the Matrix Language Frame model to explore the role of the two languages in codeswitching and the pragmatic force behind the selection of EL islands. A dataset of 14 hours was collected from AVT Khyber, a YouTube channel covering a wide range of talking shows and interviews. The research question is how EL islands figure in the overall clause structure of Pashto-English codeswitching. The study finds that English EL islands in Pashto-English codeswitching follow the structure dependency rule of the Embedded Language to retain well-formedness with the overall grammatical frame of the Pashto language. Most of the EL islands are fixed expressions and the multiword are collocated with each other. In most cases, EL islands are used as their counterparts in the Pashto language and lack the same pragmatic force. The study provides insights into the pragmatic and morphosyntactic aspects of EL islands in the Pashto-English bilingual context and contributes to the understanding of codeswitching phenomena in bilingual communities. This paper outlines the history of The International Association for the Improvement of Mother Tongue Education [IAIMTE] and the International Association for Research in L1 Education [ARLE]. Delegates at a 1993 conference at UEA recognised how important research was to generate evidence about the teaching and learning of all first languages, and to disseminate knowledge and good practice. Over the first decade of the 21st century, IAIMTE ran several successful conferences; the ambition now is to hold the conference outside Europe every four years. In 2014, IAIMTE shifted its focus (and name) from the "mother tongue" to "L1" education, a shift in terminology that reflected research problematising the term "mother tongue". From its beginnings, the Association has regarded its work as "scientific", emphasising empirically oriented research. Language teacher associations (LTAs) serve as a platform for the personal and professional learning of language teachers. This study uses Q methodology to explore how involvement in Thailand TESOL promotes collective leadership among its committee members. Twenty current and former members participated in a card-sorting task, and six of them were further interviewed. A by-person factor analysis categorised participants into three groups based on their shared perspectives on collective leadership. Thailand TESOL provides its committee members with various forms of collective leadership, such as collaborative efforts to contribute to English education, inclusive leadership practices and shared purposes. The evolving educational landscape requires members to practice collective leadership and adaptability, encouraging a culture of continuous professional learning and innovation within and beyond the association. The findings not only illuminate distinct aspects of collective leadership promoted by the association but also contribute to LTA research, particularly concerning members' personal and professional learning. While motivation has been recognized as a key catalyst for the uptake of self-initiated professional development (PD), motivational changes that occur in the course of self-initiated PD practices remain unexplored in English Language Teaching (ELT) contexts and beyond. Yet this research area warrants closer attention since motivation is a dynamic construct displaying nonlinear trajectories over multiple timescales. The exploratory single-case study reported here aims to tackle changes in motivation and the sources of these changes as reported by an English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) teacher trainee who engaged in ELT assistantship in a real classroom as a self-driven PD activity over four months in Turkey. Drawing on data from self-ratings of perceived motivational intensity, journal entries, and semi-structured interviews, the analyses showed that the focal participant's motivational development manifested a constantly evolving pattern with temporal ups and downs, fluctuating in response to a complex array of individual and contextual factors such as shifting self-efficacy beliefs, display of coping efforts, perceived success/failure of the lessons, and group dynamics in the classroom. This study aims to investigate the impact of technology-based education (TBE) on the academic motivation (AM), academic perseverance (AP), and academic self-efficacy (ASE) of high school sophomore males. Technology has an important place in education in the modern digital age since it opens up new avenues for instruction and learning. Research is still being conducted to determine the precise impacts of TBE on different facets of students' academic performance and attitudes. The study employed a quasi-experimental research design and utilized the cluster sampling method to select participants. Data collection for the study was conducted in the year 2023 and involved the administration of three distinct questionnaires: Harter's AM questionnaire, Benishek et al.'s AP questionnaire, and Lent et al.'s ASE questionnaire. A thorough grasp of how TBE affects male students' AM, AP, and ASE is one of the research's predicted objectives. Examining how technology affects these factors might provide insightful information for educational practices and interventions targeted at improving student performance and engagement. The study's findings revealed that TBE significantly influences both AE and AP while having a distinct impact on ASE. The outcomes of this study may have implications for curriculum designers, instructors, and educational officials by offering evidence-based suggestions for successfully integrating technology into the classroom. Furthermore, the findings might fill a gap unique to male students in the second year of high school by adding to the body of knowledge already available on TBE and its effects on student outcomes. This qualitative case study explores how rural teachers in the Colombian periphery perceive and appropriate national bilingual policies. I drew theoretically on coloniality/decoloniality, bilingualism, and teacher agency and collected data through questionnaires and in-depth interviews from four self-contained rural elementary school teachers. Data were analysed through thematic analysis and thematic coding and yielded three research categories: (a) bilingual policies and teaching realities gap, (b) policies’ discourses and teacher identity interconnectedness, and (c) eclectic and collaborative teachers. The main findings suggest that teachers perceive bilingual education merely as English language teaching and that bilingual policies’ powerful discourses have influenced their identity negatively. Likewise, they acknowledge that the educational authorities’ expectations are distant from the rural realities, so theyrecur to various pedagogical strategies and collaborative work to teach English and address bilingual policies’ methodological shortcomings. However, these efforts suggest racialised/colonised perceptions and teaching practices that enforce global agendas and neglect local necessities. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly made advances across various fields, including ELT. In this article we embrace an egalitarian dialogue framework to explore and understand the role of AI in language education. This format provides a useful backdrop for navigating the dual responses—enthusiasm and scepticism—by which AI's influence in education has often been characterized. We critically assess both the advantages and limitations of AI in ELT, highlighting and praising how AI-powered tools can assist educators in differentiating instruction, promoting learner autonomy, and creating personalized and inclusive learning environments, thus making education more accessible to students with diverse and individual needs. However, the article also addresses the challenges posed by the digital divide, particularly the inequities in access to (AI) technologies in low-socioeconomic-status regions. We also reflect upon how AI can become an obstacle in developing learner autonomy due to the risks associated with overdependence on such technologies and the lack of critical skills. The article concludes that although AI presents exciting opportunities for advancing and facilitating language learning, its integration must be approached with a rational mindset to ensure that it serves to bridge educational gaps rather than intensify them. There is undoubtedly, and understandably, a growing interest in incorporating generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies into ELT. While advanced AI models have the potential to support language education, offering new tools and resources to enhance learning, their use also raises important questions regarding ethics and responsibility. As we follow the emergence of GenAI as another ELT tool, it is crucial to strike a balance between leveraging the benefits of these technologies and maintaining the core values of effective pedagogy. Educators must develop clear guidelines and best practices for the responsible integration of AI in the classroom, ensuring that it enhances rather than replaces human interaction and critical thinking.
