Applying the concept of diaspora, this paper examines an organization in Kampala, Uganda that utilizes sport to foster cultural belonging and increase livelihood opportunities for refugees. A participatory action research approach was implemented with multiple forms of data collection including semistructured interviews, photovoice, and photocollaging. Findings highlight how sport and livelihoods are used by refugees to resist exclusion and other inequalities in Kampala and to express diaspora space and consciousness. Discussion highlights the usefulness of the concept of diaspora for understanding the intersections of sport, refugees, livelihoods, and, more importantly, to stimulate a homing desire for refugees forcibly displaced. The article focuses on the interwoven Indigenous and diaspora identities of the author's family on the island of Guåhan. Topics include the interconnected histories of Black and Indigenous Pacific peoples, the narrative of family discovery that challenges dominant representations of Guåhan, and the author's choreographic practice as a means to engage with and honor her ancestral heritage.

Este artículo aborda las diferentes generaciones de la literatura de Costa de Marfil en lengua española apoyándose en tres puntos fundamentales. Por un lado, se destaca la imposibilidad de comprender esta literatura sin considerar las arraigadas relaciones históricas entre el hispanismo y África Occidental. Por otro lado, se razona sobre la necesidad de transcender una lectura tradicional que se centre exclusivamente en su condición de “literatura africana de expresión castellana”, sin considerar su profundo componente crítico y antirracista. De igual manera, es imprescindible tener en cuenta las dinámicas que comparte con la literatura marfileña en francés, que se apoya igualmente en relatos de contenido panafricano y anticolonial. A través de un enfoque interdisciplinario que integra teoría literaria, historia cultural y estudios postcoloniales, los autores analizan obras de escritores marfileños que utilizan la lengua española como medio de resistencia anticolonial y reafirmación identitaria. Este corpus literario desafía las narrativas eurocéntricas y enriquece el campo del hispanismo con perspectivas africanas, subrayando la importancia de una memoria histórica compartida y de una identidad panafricana. Esta investigación abre nuevas rutas teóricas para el estudio de la literatura africana en español. Los hallazgos evidencian cómo estas obras literarias contribuyen a la reconfiguración de una narrativa transmoderna inclusiva y diversa. The article presents highlights of a roundtable discussion on the significance of the American Civil War. Topics discussed include emancipation of African American slaves and African diaspora, secession of Southern states that led to the passage of the Homestead Act and Pacific Railway Act, Civil War as a formative event of Reconstruction, freedom and anti-racism in U.S. history, and relevance of the Civil War to capitalism and neoliberalism, as well as to political and agricultural economy.

This roundtable showcases how different Asian, Pacific Islander, and Indigenous communities in Colorado are fighting for sovereignty of their homelands. It reorients the question of "homelands" to highlight the experiences of communities whose homelands remain occupied by settler-colonial and imperial nation-states, like the United States, India, Israel, and China. Participants speak to the struggles of sovereignty of their communities and communities they work with, unsettling epistemological frameworks to disrupt normative understandings of home, migration, and diaspora. This article examines how Teng Yun Temple, the oldest sanctioned Chinese temple in Brunei Darussalam, navigates assimilation pressures in a Muslim-majority country while upholding religious orthodoxy and cultural identity through transnational ties with its ancestral land. Serving as a symbol of ethnic Chinese identity, the temple is a bastion of Chinese religious and cultural heritage in a conservative country where political power and cultural space available for non-Malay/Muslims are circumscribed. This article delves into Teng Yun Temple's strategies to adapt religious practices and maintain transnational connections in response to restrictive state regulations. It highlights the agency of Brunei's Chinese minority in preserving their culture and religious practices, showcasing the role of the temple in the country's religious diversity. The case study sheds light on local and transnational dynamics within a Southeast Asian Chinese religious organization, revealing how a religious minority navigates identity and state policies. This article examines the development of the Cantonese sworn brotherhood, the Chee Kung Tong, in global perspective. By examining the broad thematic similarities between the chapters that developed around the world, this article argues that the Chee Kung Tong adapted the sworn brotherhood, an associational form long used in mainland China and Southeast Asia, into a flexible organization able to meet the needs of mobile and vulnerable Cantonese migrants. Chinese voluntary associations (CVAs) are often portrayed as "old people's clubs" and extant studies have largely neglected younger generations' experiences in these associations. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork with younger Singaporean Chinese who engage with CVAs, this paper explores how they negotiate Chineseness in and through the spaces of CVAs. This paper contributes to extant literature in two ways. First, it sheds light on the role of migrant associations in shaping younger generations' ethnic identity and belonging. CVAs act as sites of knowledge, relationships and connections to ancestral places. Yet at the same time, CVAs are spaces where the younger generations experience alienation during their encounters with older generations. Second, the paper responds to larger scholarly concerns about what China's "rise" means for the Chinese diaspora. Recent studies of Chinese voluntary associations (CVAs) have attempted to highlight the theoretical significance of CVAs for understandings of community (re)making. However, the power dynamics inherent in community (re)making has rarely been expounded. In recognition of this, we weave together case studies across countries to explore the complex power relations played out in and through the transformation of CVAs. Collectively, CVAs are understood as ever-changing, heterogeneous ancestral communities composed of common ancestral ties be it origin, locality, surname, religion or language. We aim to contribute to existing scholarship on ethnic and diaspora studies through focusing on CVAs in three ways: (1) foreground CVAs as sites of power relations through unpacking ethnic relations and gender hierarchies; (2) illuminate Chinese diaspora transnationalism beyond political-economic perspectives; and (3) examine the contemporaneous transformation of ethnic Chinese communities in shifting times, including amidst China's "rise" as a global power. In the wake of the 100th anniversary, this paper examines the shift in Armenian genocide commemorations materializing in the USA for the 50th anniversary of the 1915 genocide. Explored are ritual aspects of the commemorative practices undertaken to pay homage to its victims. Accentuated is the 1965 landmark year during which Armenians from diasporas around the world (including the American at the heart of this analysis) took to the streets, for the first time, to demand Turkey's recognition of the Medz Yeghern. Through the prism of two newspapers published in English (Hairenik Weekly and The Armenian Mirror-Spectator), the author explores this ethnic mobilization of the Armenian-American community with its public protest against the decades-long injustice and silence. Unveiled are the inner workings of the commemoration planning, as well as the ways by which Armenian-Americans narrated their tragedy to the host community (in which they were already well-settled). The article depicts the preparations for and the semicentennial itself as the moment of formation of an ethnic body politic – one transcending intra-ethnic competition and dispute even as the group remained formally divided. There is a plethora of research on the determinants of state repression. Concomitant with the advancement of technology, there is a growing body of literature on high-tech repression. However, relatively scarce attention has been paid to the impact of high-tech repression on individuals. This study makes a novel contribution to the literature by analysing the impact of China's high-tech repression in East Turkestan on the identity, beliefs and practices of Uyghurs. We analyse the impact of state surveillance in East Turkestan based on surveys and focus group interviews with members of the Uyghur diaspora (who experienced China's repressive practices in the region and subsequently migrated to Turkiye) between July and September 2023. The overwhelming majority of the survey respondents indicated that high-tech repression severely reduced their social interactions and cultural practices in East Turkestan and that this repression has negatively affected their view of the Chinese state and technology in general. Most of the respondents indicated that after witnessing this type of repression, they clung more to their national identity. Our focus group interviews provide more in-depth results on the impact of high-tech repression. This article provides a tour d'horizon of the recent emigration of the Kurdish political elite from Turkey and contextualizes it in its historical course. Specifically, the article discusses the similarities and differences of the exilic waves at the two ends of the chain of pro-Kurdish political parties in Turkey, i.e., the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) and the Democracy Party (DEP). Based on semi-structured elite interviews, a comparison of the patterns of integration with and differentiation from the Kurdish diaspora organizations in Europe, in particular, reveals significant variation between these two exilic waves despite their common root cause. Such variation, coupled with tensions derived mainly from the hierarchal structure of the Kurdish diaspora organizations, fuels a rivalry that may alter the composition of Kurdish political elites in Europe. Iranian Jews produced roughly 15 periodicals during the twentieth century, on which some initial work has been undertaken. These periodicals, newspapers, and pamphlets gave a voice to the community and served to foster the consolidation of political subjectivity and syncretic national ideologies within the public sphere. With that, scholarship still lacks any significant exploration of the publications produced by those Iranian Jews who emigrated to Israel after it declared independence in 1948. In an initial step towards illuminating these fruitful historical resources, this article views in parallel two publications produced by the community during the first years of Israeli statehood: Kurosh and Setareh-ye Sharq. Following a short background on the arrival of Iranian Jews in the country and the conditions they faced, the article analyses the publications as manifestations of two distinct approaches to adaptation to the new environment. In Kurosh, there is evidence of an anti-establishment spirit of independence, facilitating an activistic and assertive Iranian Jewish consciousness in the land that was anchored in connection to Iranianness. In Setareh-ye Sharq, meanwhile, we find top-down discursive and social pressures on the community to accept a normative vision of Iranian identity in Israel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the wake of recent interventions to better connect the subfields of international migration and race and ethnicity through a sociology of racialized immigration, we push this further by arguing for the necessity of a global Blackness perspective on global migration. Such a focus does not just reflect the role of race in the dynamics of migration, and vice versa, but more importantly shifts assumptions about this relationship. So, it is not enough to say that race matters in migration but rather that blackness and Black lives matter in how migration unfolds. Using global blackness as a starting point in our analyses of migration reveals a clearer and closer entanglement of race, racism, colonialism, and migration. We argue that global Blackness structures notions of who migrates and under what conditions, as well as our ideas regarding migrants and their descendants and use the examples of New York City, Paris, and France as paradigmatic sites for understanding this relationship. The object of this study is a new Russian migrant community in Estonia, a relatively small group of Russian citizens who escaped their home country after the resumption of the mass-scale attack against Ukraine. The author seeks to identify major narratives produced the anti-Putin Russian migrants settled in Estonia and unveil their political meanings. The article discusses how these narratives are communicated, what audiences they appeal to, and how the agency of the new Russian community in this Baltic state is discursively constructed. This study departs from earlier studies by incorporating nonlinearities, asymmetric structures, cross-sectional dependence, and policy variations across countries into the remittance-poverty causal nexus. Due to the high incidence of extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) despite the persistent remittance inflows to the region, data on SSA for the periods 1981–2020 are analyzed using the Hatemi-J data decomposition procedure, a battery of second-generation estimators, and Dumitrescu-Hurlin heterogeneous panel Granger non-causality test. The findings, unlike prior studies, confirm the existence of cross-sectional dependence, as well as the need for policy diversity among SSA countries. The research outcomes also differ from previous research in that they reveal multiple features of asymmetries in the causality between remittances and poverty reduction which vary across SSA countries. Policy differences among SSA nations to address country-specific peculiarities are attested by symmetric causality. In certain countries, remittance inflows are stimulating factors that induce poverty reduction, whereas, in others, the high incidence of extreme poverty is a causal agent that pushes Africans in the diaspora to send money home to help alleviate poverty. Only a few instances of bidirectional causality have been established. Evidence of no causality is found to exist in some countries. The outcomes of nonlinear and asymmetric causalities are more diverse. All of the pairs of positive and negative components show strong evidence of asymmetric causality, which varies across SSA countries with more informative and robust policy dimensions. Building upon reflexive autobiography to theorize Asian racialization in a globalizing circumstance, this paper focuses on how race is constructed transnationally by global media, and how global interconnectedness continues to project white Americanness, racialized anti-Black aesthetics, and otherization of Asianness in and through sport. I trace three historical conjunctures to build a connection between the collective history and my self-reflection on social contexts: Americanization through global media, aspiration of whiteness, and the criminalization of Blackness. With this, I attempt to articulate sport as the most convenient identity-making apparatus in immigrant America. This article concludes by highlighting the importance of the intersectionality of the asymmetric power structures that redress the miseducation that elides Asian narratives from sport. Jokes concurrently produce humour and offence owing to differences in cultural considerations of funniness and taboo. With growing audience diversity and online dissemination of live events, stand-up comics are exposed to increased scrutiny for irreverent anecdotes. Yet, 'punching up' has become an acceptable form of benign transgression. This is more so in cross-cultural contexts where differences heighten offence, because jokes do not just make us laugh but also create discomfort, especially when the joke-teller is different from us; whether it is 'up' or 'down', a punch is still a punch. Using the stand-up acts of four African diaspora comedians – Andi Osho, Dave Davis, Urzila Carlson and Trevor Noah – this essay interrogates cross-cultural joke presentation mechanics, themes and performer–audience relations to determine how and why these jokesters variously utilize punch-up jokes. Queries guiding the study include, what performance specificities do humourists enact to mitigate offence while dealing with sensitive/volatile subjects and a more diverse, political correctness-conscious audience? What is/are the relationship(s) between identity, cultural representations and jokes? In answering these questions, the emphasis is on discussing how the selected comedians craftily erect pre-determined sets of values that establish the context(s) within which the offensiveness of their 'punch(es)' is/are mitigated. Accelerating globalisation and transnational migration in recent decades has led to an increasing number of women migrants. This phenomenon calls for an investigation of women's identities as migrants. This article examines women migrants' sense of belonging through their everyday material practices. I draw on the concept of diasporic objects to examine the material objects that women migrants take with them, which function as prisms for their relationships to their national cultures. I adopt a theoretical framework of intimacy – including national intimacy, intimate culture and diasporic intimacy – to examine how women relate to their nations via a nation–family continuum. Through an analysis of 18 women migrants' narratives about their diasporic objects, I argue that the diasporic objects of women migrants articulate their domestic and familial life and connect them with their imagined national cultures. Their concept of 'home' is haunted by memories of war, patriarchal oppression and authoritarianism. I conclude by discussing how they use their diasporic objects to transform the idea of home into a rooted and transitive concept. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The increasing presence of African diasporic people in Europe and their identity politics have given rise to a proliferation of studies on their experiences, albeit with the exception of central eastern Europe (CEE). This research expands on this scholarship by addressing lived experiences, racialisation processes and struggles to belong among Afropeans in Czechia. Grounded in ethnography the study draws from narrative interviews with self-identified Afroczechs who are closely connected to both their African heritage and their Czechness. We conceptualise their identity politics as Restricted Affiliation in a sense that the state of belonging to Czechia has distinct limits due to the high costs of racial Otherness they experience. The findings demonstrate the limits of a shared language vis-à-vis racial ideologies in Czech national identity constructions and contribute to more visibility and further theorising of Czech blackness. Both diaspora and tourism are highly complex concepts. As an emerging tourism concept, diaspora tourism entangles the different perspectives related to tourism mobilities; however, it has received limited attention within tourism studies. The research focus and debates in current tourism studies in relation to diaspora remain unclear and fail to accurately address the emerging market segment(s) in diaspora tourism. This study identified a range of entanglements that shape current research around diaspora tourism in terms of the application contexts of diaspora tourism, linking concepts, concerned diaspora communities, and key research topics. The Holodomor of 1932–1933 resulted in the deaths of millions of Ukrainians from starvation, execution and deportation to labour camps. Survivors were further divided and displaced by World War II, when a large proportion of the peasantry endured forced labour in Germany. Those who avoided repatriation to the Soviet Union at the end of the War formed diaspora communities in parts of the West, where a small number gave testimony to their experiences during the famine. Others, however, lived in silence for a number of psychological and political reasons, unable to give a voice to their memories. The postgenerations grew up with these silences and a growing understanding that there was more to be told. Many have undertaken academic research as an avenue to deconstruct and contextualise their familial memories, in order to contribute to processes of repairing the damage of the past. Their works bear the markings of intergenerational trauma and a 'pathology of recognition' (Oliver 2001) that drives the postgenerations' quest for recognition from the perpetrator nation and the public. This paper examines intergenerational trauma in the academic research of diasporic postgenerations and the efficacy of academia as a space for symbolically unpacking and repairing the past. In this article, we explore how migrants establish and operate small and medium-sized enterprises in the host country while navigating liminality and developing appropriate entrepreneurial strategies. We use a multiple-case study of Russian-speaking migrant entrepreneurs in Germany to explore how the integration of entrepreneurial migrants into the host country depends on their agency, ability to enter new contexts, adaptive strategies, perceived country of origin, and connections to diasporas. The study contributes to migrant entrepreneurship by explaining how migrants strategise and diminish their liminality by leveraging their portfolio of capabilities and resources to establish, grow, and transform entrepreneurial ventures. Research on physical activities among religious and minority ethnic groups in Europe often focuses on classical public health issues or how to 'empower', and 'equip' people to stay healthy as well as integrated. In producing healthy citizens, bodies have been disciplined and are attuned to dominant discourses regarding religion, race, minority ethnic groups, and their health practices. This paper aims to show how minority ethnic groups, through physical activities, pursue their wellbeing beyond matters of integration and physical health. With a focus on participants from the predominantly Muslim Somali-Dutch and Christian Ghanaian-Dutch communities in the Netherlands, I argue from a biopolitical lens that physical activities are used by state institutions to 'produce' bodies in particular ways that are meaningful to the state. However, the demands of the state on ethnic minority groups often leads to the racialisation of bodies. Compliance with and resistance to disciplinary mechanisms emerge around understanding and engaging in physical activities. Thus, people adopt creative ways to incorporate physical activities into their daily routines, considering their migration situation and living conditions to address or negotiate issues of sociality, intimacy, and morality. This paper, therefore, shows how engaging in physical activities enables the embodiment of different forms of sociality, experience, and aesthetics that are important in the pursuit of wellbeing, especially when dealing with racisms. Renewed interest in empire and colonialism has transformed our understanding of transnational networks and processes of exchange, entanglement, and globalisation. However, colonial entanglement still conceals some significant players in globalising cultures. The Protestant women's foreign missionary movement pioneered transnational activism by interweaving women's empowerment in "foreign" and "home" environments into a single mission. Essential in developing conceptual and organisational frameworks to address "global issues," the movement's impact upon state formation was also profound. This case study of the Women's Foreign Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church in Canada (1876–1914) combines global diaspora frameworks with local, regional, national, and gendered settler lenses. Close review of Scottish diaspora scholarship and a multi-scale approach to the WFMS's engagement with social reform helps integrate siloed scholarships, revealing how local and foreign mission environments intersected and collaborated to fortify structures of Anglo-Protestant hegemony in Canada and globally. This article seeks to model the socio-political influences of media use in diaspora. Participant observation and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from Tunisian diaspora members residing in France, Denmark and Sweden. The article proposes 'mediatized diaspora' as a new model explaining the transnational intertwining between media and politics in the diaspora. Four sets of influences enabled by multimodal communication were defined and discussed as components of the model: (1) aspirations for the country of origin; (2) political meaning-making; (3) engaging in political actions; and (4) perceptions of social reality. While literature on memory and dictatorship in Latin America is extensive and narratives departing from the memories of children are evolving, the (gendered) intergenerational processes at the core of the experience of military terror, from the specific location of the diaspora, have so far been marginal in both research and in public debates. What is the language through which collective experiences of violence and political persecution are told to the next generation in diaspora contexts? What does it mean to articulate narratives from the dictatorship in Chile with memories emerging from the diaspora located in Sweden? This understanding is a vital point of departure in our study of young female adults whose parents came to Sweden after the Pinochet military takeover, a group that we here refer to as the daughters of the Chilean diaspora in Sweden. Provenance, as the foundational principle of archival studies, dictates that records with the same creator should be organized separately from those of a different creator. This idea of provenance, however, fails to consider different epistemologies of origin. Using an ethnographic study of the Palestinian diaspora in Southeast Michigan, this paper interrogates provenance through Palestinian epistemology and Palestinian futurism to theorize a transformative provenance that positions archival origins as both spatially and temporally unfixed. Rather than rejecting provenance, the concept is a useful departure point to consider how Western understandings of origin and custody can be broadened by other ways of knowing. In this article, I track the origins and custody of memories and stories, the main medium of records in this community, to highlight the culturally specific epistemologies involved in their preservation. I then propose a transformative provenance based on three qualities. First, intergenerational: Chain of custody belongs to both the past and the present, as stories belong to the time of a grandparent's past exile and a grandchild's present diaspora. Second, collective: With the spatial referent of memories being lost, ownership is shared within village kinship networks. Third, imaginative: Origins of memories exist in the past, present, and the future, as those in diaspora use memories to imagine future liberation. By grounding this analysis of Palestinian memory work within the community's conceptualizations of knowledge organization, this paper contributes to current discourse around decolonial recordkeeping, non-Western epistemology, and the management of diaspora archives. This article presents an ethnographic study of diasporic nationhood, Catholicism, and ethical navigation among Polish migrants in Denmark. Focusing on a vibrant Polish Catholic community in Copenhagen, the study utilises fieldwork and 25 semi-structured interviews gathered from 2021 to 2023 to explore the under-researched role of a nationalised Catholicism as a repertoire of guidance in a migratory setting. The conceptual framework combines a praxiological approach to diasporic nationhood with the notion of ethical affordances. Foregrounding specific modalities of connections between Catholic Polish nationhood and ethical guidance, the study expands the perspectives on how migrants actively engage Catholicism amid their lives of transition and accommodation in Denmark. Based on such focus, the analysis shows how this connection enables both an ethical navigation in new terrain, but also an opposition to the secular public outside the church environments. Within the nascent social scientific study of Catholicism and migration, the study contributes by analytically combining these elements – diasporic nationhood and ethical navigation – thereby providing novel insights into the often overlooked ethical and religious experiences of post-accession Polish migrants, and the ethical difference a nationalised form of Catholicism makes. The article is devoted to the study of the peculiarities of the legal regulation of multiple citizenship under the modern legislation of Ukraine. Within the framework of the article, the author tries to analyze the current state of enshrining the right to citizenship in the legislation of Ukraine and the degree of the regulation of multiple citizenship. The possibility of introducing the multiple citizenship in Ukraine has been clarified and its necessity has been established. The announced changes to the legislation on citizenship were analyzed. The author put an emphasis on the relevance of issues of multiple citizenship, caused by the emigration of Ukrainians, by the large Ukrainian diaspora in the foreign countries as well as by the numerous representatives of national minorities who live in our country. In the context of the article, the importance of solving multiple citizenship issues at the legislative level and developing a clear state policy in this area are emphasized. Since enshrining in the legislation the so-called principle of «nonrecognition of multiple citizenship» means only the non-recogni tion of its legal consequences. An intermediate conclusion about the significant gaps in the legislation of Ukraine about multiple citizenship based on the results of the analysis of normative-legal base was made. The author is convinced that the multiple citizenship in Ukraine come of conscious activity of the legislator and the need to solve the issues of multiple citizenship in Ukraine is extremely high. The theoretical and legal foundations of understanding the actual concept of citizenship and the concept of the right to citizenship by the legislation of Ukraine were analyzed. The multiple citizenship as a special legal position of a person who at one time is in the citizenship of two or more states was established. The author put an emphasis on the fact of absence of the concept of bipatrism in the law of Ukraine "On citizenship" and on the absence of the principle of inadmissibility of cases of multiple citizenship among the principles of state policy in the field of citizenship. It was concluded that the draft laws introduced by the President of Ukraine are directed towards changing the ordinary, not the constitutional, legislation on citizenship. That is why the opinion regarding the expediency of changing the legislation on citizenship in order to solve the problems of the outdated migration policy and satisfy the interests of a lar ge part of Ukrainians was expressed. AbstractYouth living at the intersections of multiple marginalized identities are navigating a polarized context where civil liberties are threatened. The aim of this paper is to provide a theoretically framed illustration of how my practice has evolved since Fall 2023 through the genocide of Palestinians. I define and illustrate five theories that guide my work, and provide anti-oppressive occupational reformulations of witnessing and self-care. A liberatory occupational analysis of cultural activity highlights the centrality of history and rootedness in land, collective memory and storytelling, transgenerational continuity, and political resistance, for healing during a time of active traumatization. In 1912, Ikaria, a Greek island in the North Aegean Sea, seceded from the Ottoman Empire in a short-lived Revolution, becoming the independent ‘Free State of Ikaria’ for nearly five months. Consequently, a culture of radicalism grew on the island, fuelled by emerging fascism in Greece and Europe, WWII, andthe Greek Civil War (1946–1949), where Ikaria was used as a prison for communist exiles. Ultimately, this radicalism transitioned into the diaspora, which had simultaneously been growing in Egypt, the United States, and from the 1910s, Australia, with South Australia being a significant place of settlement and community. This study examines the Ikarian diaspora in the context of the Ikarian Revolution (1912) and subsequent political radicalism. It explores their emigration, settlement, and community building practices in the United States, Egypt, and Australia, with South Australia taken as a case study due to its origins at the same time as the Revolution and growing left-wing activism on the island. It hopes to unravel and link the diaspora with the unique story and memory of the Revolution and its impacts on Ikarian culture and identity. This paper examines the eating practices and habits that have been resituated, transmitted, and negotiated in the specific migratory context of Chicago’s Mexican neighborhoods. I focus primarily on commercial urban spaces offering Mexican food. For while the importance of the domestic sphere in migrant food socialization has been widely analyzed, the complementary role of commercial food sites in the “ethnicized” urban public space has received less attention. This article seeks to demonstrate the key socializing role of such places (businesses, restaurants and certain social venues in the city), as part of what those surveyed refer to as “life in Spanish.” On this basis, we test the hypothesis of public production of corporalities, identities, and sensitive experiences of food transmission in the commercial migrant space, without suggesting that “domestic” food patterns are “superior,” more “authentic,” or “legitimate” than culinary practices in commercial locations. To this end, different circles of commensality and sociability, both generational and professional, surrounding the commercial consumption of culturally significant foods are taken into account. Methodologically, this ethnographic research has relied on participant observation in urban anthropology, also inspired by the theoretical principles of dialogic and dynamic anthropology, as well as considering subjectivities, affects, and sensitivities. This article examined the attitudes of Hungarian Jews towards Israel using two databases that were collected in 1999 and 2017 in a quasi-representative sample. The findings indicate that 1) Perception of Israel’s central role depends on age and the level of Jewish affiliation; 2) One’s perception of Israel’s centrality for diasporic life and one’s feeling of belonging to Israel do not necessarily coincide; and 3) The younger generations and the more secularised Jews are more critical of Israeli policies. Introduction: This research investigates resilience and lived experiences of transnational Russophone families amidst global changes, with a focus on the intricate dynamics of communities spread across borders. The study emphasizes the importance of considering individual migrant experiences in understanding language learning and integration. We explored perceptions of local language proficiency among Russophones; challenges faced by adult Russophones in learning a new language; attitudes and experiences of adults regarding language learning; and strategies Russophone immigrants use to address gaps in the target language. Methods: Methodologically, the research employs ethnographic and thematic analyses, drawing on a diverse array of sources including interviews, social media posts, and personal communications. This approach highlights the necessity of considering both prompted responses and spontaneous discussions to capture authentic opinions on language learning from various perspectives. Results: The study underscores the interconnectedness and interdependence within transnational families, illustrating how their lives are shaped by factors that transcend national boundaries. The examination of their diverse experiences reveals their capacity to endure and overcome challenges of integrating into new societies. Russophone migrants' attitudes toward language learning highlight how learning the host country's language enhances integration and social mobility, while maintaining the native language preserves cultural heritage, although second-generation immigrants often feel disconnected from their linguistic roots. Discussion: Studies by various authors discuss challenges which immigrants face when adapting to a new linguistic environment. This project emphasizes the impact of language learning on identity and reveals cultural flexibility in attaining social justice in multicultural contexts. These insights suggest that language programs and policies should address both the practical needs of immigrants and the preservation of their cultural identities taking into account their naïve views about language learning. In this study, I aim to critically examine the Israeli planning discourse related to the execution of the first national masterplan for Jewish population dispersion in Israel's history, the ‘Sharon Plan’. I argue that the discursive justification of the Population Dispersion Policy, as presented in Israel's planning historiography, provides planning, cultural, moral and economic advantages to the dispersion of Middle-Eastern and North African Jews (‘Mizrahi’ Jews), used to de-Arabise them as a project of ‘whiteness’. Subsequently, I analyse the three-dimensional language initiated in the Sharon Plan – Land, People and Time dimensions – though three main motifs: the ‘making the desert bloom’ motif, the modernistic progress motif, and the urgency motif. On a larger theoretical scale, I suggest reinvestigating how spatial design and national planning historiographies racialise social groups. Methodologically, I apply the Cultural Approach to Critical Discourse Analysis on a case study that engages the built environment, by assembling a corpus that includes the masterplan, Arieh Sharon's lectures and articles collected at the Azrieli Architectural Archive of Tel-Aviv Art Museum, and three planning and architectural exhibitions’ catalogues. This article sheds light on Italian emigration flows with a focus on their geographical origins in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, that is, during the so‐called Great Migration. Annual province‐level data on Italian emigration are analysed in order to reconstruct the regional origins of emigrants, the factors motivating their decisions, their gender, and their literacy levels. The regions generating the largest population outflows were located in the North of the country. Despite the literature's focus on the Italian south diaspora to the US, the main destinations of Italian emigration in this period were other European countries. Explanations focusing on economic factors as emigration drivers prove weak. The provinces generating the greatest outflows do not appear to share any characteristics nor obey any underlying pattern: some tentative explanations concerning provinces of origin will be offered. Data relating to the emigration of women and children point to the central role of nuclear families, displaying a higher rate of growth compared to overall emigration, with peaks during the migration booms to Latin America (1890s) and the United States (1905–1907). No obvious connection emerges between emigrant outflow size and literacy levels: people migrated from the literate North as well as from the more impoverished regions featuring much lower literacy levels. Nationalism studies have only recently started to grapple with the Anthropocene as a foundational shift for the discipline. One of the effects of climate change is the forced displacement of large populations, and if access to rights cannot be ensured outside the structures of territorial sovereignty, this migration could easily translate into widespread rightlessness. I argue that this necessitates a rethinking of how communities become rights‐bearing and how such rights‐bearing communities have existed outside the structures of the nation‐state. Specifically, I propose looking to Paul Gilroy's account of the Black Atlantic diaspora as an example of a rights‐bearing community that successfully claimed “the right to have rights” through a concerted effort of vocalising experiences of displacement. Reading Gilroy through rights‐scholarship in political theory I argue that the Black Atlantic can inform work on climate diasporas and their latent political potential as rights‐bearing communities. In this text, I reflect on the African cosmovivencias of Ubuntu and the place of the ancestors within those cosmovivencias. I also approach the resignifications that Ubuntu and ancestrality have had in the African Diaspora. I show how ancestrality is present both in Ubuntu and in the cultural, religious, and traditional manifestations, which express the resignifications of the African cosmovivencias of Ubuntu in Latin America. To support my argument, I bring examples of cases that I consider to be experiences of these cosmovivencias. For Africa, I mention Ubuntu (South Africa) and the instances of the figure of “Kimbilikiti,” a common spirit of the Lega ethnic group (eastern DRC); the ancestral ritual for good fishing, practiced jointly in Uvira (also in east DRC); and the figure of “Abashingantahe” (wise men, judges), in Burundi. For Latin America, I bring up the experiences understood as “suficiencias íntimas” and “vivir sabroso” in Colombia and the African rooted religions and the quilombola communities. In January 2020, Ukrainian Flight PS752 was shot down shortly after take‐off from Tehran's IKA airport, killing all 176 passengers, the majority of whom were headed to Canada via connecting flights. In the aftermath of the tragedy, many among the Iranian diaspora in Canada, ourselves included, were stricken by an unexpectedly deep sense of shock and sorrow, to the point that some experienced what we term as “vicarious death.” Drawing on 49 in‐depth interviews with the Iranian diaspora in Edmonton, this study explores questions about how being an immigrant, being far from “Home,” and being a member of a racialized group might shape and deepen the experience of collective grief and how, conversely, collective grief might influence the meaning of “Home” and bring into question one's ethno‐national self‐identity. Our results present a multi‐dimensional, sociological understanding of grief as a collective, rather than individualistic, experience and highlight the complexity and depth of emotional experiences among immigrants. For Black people of the African diaspora, who have survived generational oppression including enslavement, and exist in persistently hostile environments in which anti-Black racism is structural and interpersonal, an expansive view of posttraumatic growth (PTG) is required to promote personal and collective healing. Using the intergenerational healing and well-being framework, the authors examine historical and contemporary examples of personal and collective healing among Black people to reimagine pathways to PTG. Implications for helping professions when rethinking PTG in the context of systemic anti-Black racism are presented. Chinatowns in Canada and the United States are marked by cultural hybridity, where the translation of various types, verbal and non-verbal, takes place to produce distinct urban meanings. On the basis of an ethnographic observation, this article reveals the role of translation in the signification and imagination of Chinatowns. Cultural diaspora in relation to multimodal translation is designed as a theoretical framework, under which linguistic, aesthetic and cross-cultural tensions are explained. It argues that the urban meanings of Chinatowns are generated through an omnipresent practice of translation enacted by the interplay of text, image and culture across time and space. In the meantime, Chinatowns have evolved from ethnic enclaves into cosmopolitan prototypes for future cities. A translational perspective on Chinatowns incorporates visual semiotics into verbal languages to unpack cross-cultural relations, which informs a great deal about the nature of translation. This commentary responds to the essay by Suraj Yengde titled 'Race and Caste in the Making of US Sociology', picks up a few threads in Yengde's argument and attempts to unravel them in the interests of deepening this conversation on an issue that has returned to the foreground of global sociology and anthropology. Given the thin and tenuous disciplinary separations between sociology and social anthropology in India, especially evident in studies on caste, this commentary straddles these two disciplines in the Indian context and points to some interesting disciplinary intersections in the American context. Specifically, Yengde's discussion of questions of caste, race and class is extended to look at Indian and diasporic contexts to speak to the specific intersections of caste, race, gender, class, region and temporality in contexts of caste formation drawing on the work of Joan Mencher and Gail Omvedt, among others. This article examines the gendering of space and the entailed dismantlement of the passivity associated with Arab women in Lalami's The Other Americans (2019) and Darraj's The Inheritance of Exile (2007). Drawing on transnational feminism, this article critically examines the agency of the second generation of Arab American females in the space of the diaspora in their claiming of and entitlement to the public space. They are different from their mothers who seek to perpetuate the discursive division and the dual dichotomy of the public space which is that of men, and the private domestic which is that of women, even after their migratory journeys. The submissiveness and passivity that are linked to Arab women are revisited and brought to question as Arab female migrants in the novels negotiate space as independent agents in total oblivion to the biased and ideological division. Their heterogeneous and dissimilar subjectivities, negotiations, and experiences answer back the othering rhetoric which represents them as being isomorphic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay troubles the romanticized US American "nation of immigrants" narrative through its relationship to Black diasporic histories of migration. The Immigration Act of 1924 codified white ethnocentrism in US American citizenship rights, and thus represented a potential challenge to Black American citizenship claims. Here we reflect on Black American rhetorical practices as a mode of worldmaking; of laying claim to putatively white space and US American citizenship. Through this lens, Black migration and consequent transformation of space functions as a transgressive practice for a people who are perpetually positioned outside of nationality, a way of reclaiming ownership over the spoils of unwilling labor. These Black rhetorical practices echo through the diaspora, as those who built but do not own push back against the ontological negation of ethnonationalist citizenship and immigration policies dictated by white and western imperial powers, in favor of speaking themselves into belonging.
