This paper introduces novel mathematical optimisation models for the 2-Dimensional guillotine Cutting Stock Problem with Variable-Sized Stock that appears in a Spanish company in the honeycomb cardboard industry. This problem mainly differs from the classical cutting stock problems in the stock, which is considered variable-sized, i.e. we have to decide the panel dimensions, width, and length. This approach is helpful in industries where the stock is produced simultaneously with the cutting process. The stock is then cut into smaller rectangular pieces that must meet the customers' requirements, such as the type of item, dimensions, demands, and technical specifications. Furthermore, in the problem tackled in this paper, the cuts are guillotine, performed side to side. The proposed mathematical models are validated using real data from the company, obtaining results that drastically reduce the produced material and leftovers, reducing operation times and economic costs. In this research we proposed and tested a solution for improving lightfastness of paperboard electrophotographic prints – enhancing the printed material with inks containing pearlescent pigments. The goal was to analyze how pearlescent pigments' composition and the size of their particles affect lightfastness, and to assess whether this important property is influenced by the tone value of the initial ink layer. Therefore, lightfastness of the unprinted paperboard and the paperboard printed in electrophotography with medium and full coverage of black ink was measured before and after overprinting with pearlescent inks. The results indicate that pearlescent pigments can be efficiently used to prevent light induced degradation of both paperboard and the corresponding prints. The most significant improvements in lightfastness were noticed when pearlescent inks were printed directly onto the paperboard and on the prints with 50 % black coverage. The best protection from light was achieved with pigments containing only two layers – mica and ferric oxide. Pigments containing mica, titanium dioxide, and tin oxide provided satisfactory lightfastness of the printed paperboard even with the small surface coverage. No significant correlation was found between the size of pearlescent pigment particles and the lightfastness of the paperboard prints to which they are applied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the use of sodium carbonate pulping in oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) pulp production for paperboard manufacturing. The pulping varying the active alkali (AA) (4.5 %, 6.5 %, 8.5 %), NaOH fraction (F) (10 %, 20 %, 30 %), and cooking time (T) (30′, 60′, 90′). The performance was evaluated based on screened pulp yield, kappa number, and delignification selectivity. Furthermore, the functional groups, S/G ratio, and morphological structure of the optimum pulp were observed. The tensile and tear indices of the OPEFB pulp paperboard were also measured. The results suggest sodium carbonate pulping at a low chemical dose successfully produced OPEFB pulp. Based on the highest delignification selectivity value of 12.74, the most effective pulping conditions were achieved with AA-6.5 %, F-30 %, and T-90′. The optimum OPEFB pulp analysis revealed a decrease in lignin proportion with the dominant degradation of the syringyl unit. Thus, the fibers are easily separable during mechanical treatment. These characteristics influenced the paperboard, resulting high tensile and tear indices of 7.90–8.15 Nm g−1 and 15.09–16.25 mN m2 g−1, respectively. Overall, this study demonstrated the potential of sodium carbonate pulping to produce high-quality pulp and paperboard from OPEFBs, highlighting the thoroughness of the research process in the pulp and paper manufacturing field. [Display omitted] The recycling of paper and board (PB) yields economic and environmental advantages compared to primary paper production. However, PB from lightweight packaging (LWP) waste is currently not comprehensively reintegrated into the paper value stream. To develop an adapted recycling process for PB from LWP, PB quantities, qualities, and fluctuations ranges in LWP are required. Currently, no sufficient database is available. Therefore, we developed a methodical approach and conducted a case study to access the PB potential in LWP sorting plants using manual analysis and sensor-based material flow monitoring. Differences resulting from seasonal variations, materials from different settlement structures, and fluctuation ranges in LWP composition over two weeks have been investigated. PB contents in the input of 6.5 wt% (ww) and 5.9 wt% (ww) were determined for winter and summer sampling campaigns, respectively. The PB product stream amounted to 5.7 wt% (ww, winter) and 4.8 wt% (ww, summer). Around 45 wt% (ww) of PB from the PB product stream was classified as misplaced by the consumer and should have been discarded in separate paper collections. Based on the determined PB quantities and qualities, a potential of usable and in the PB product stream available PB in LWP was determined. The technically available and usable PB potential in German LWP waste amounts to 89,000 to 100,000 tons per year (average PB yield of around 65 wt% (ww)). Increasing demand for packaging has motivated research into sustainable materials to prevent continued plastic pollution. Materials based on polysaccharide polyelectrolyte complexes (PPCs) are emerging as a viable solution for packaging applications. We employed ball milling, a well‐established technology, for the preparation of PPC materials to create an innovative one‐step process capable of producing highly concentrated and homogeneous PPC particle precursor dispersions. We fabricated carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and chitosan (CS)–based PPC solutions exhibiting high‐solid loading and investigated the potential of PPC solutions made from ball milling as alternative barriers for packaging. PPC‐coated paperboard exhibited improved Cobb test performance and outstanding grease resistance as compared to pristine paper. The results certified that a single‐step process via ball milling can produce high‐solid content PPC solutions useful for creating bio‐based coatings with excellent barrier performance. Chromatogeny is a hydrophobization technique with fatty acid chloride without solvent that confers an improved barrier to water and water vapour, thanks to a technology that can be implemented on an industrial scale and adapted to any hydroxylated substrate, including cellulosic materials. In this work, a chromatogenically modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) coating layer was used as a high oxygen barrier material and as a model for hydroxylated polymers, including microfibrillated cellulose coating. Multiple passes can be applied to the coated layer to improve grafting densities. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms and distribution of the reagent in the coated layer or whether it also modifies the board. In this work, we have demonstrated that the modification proceeds from the surface to the interior of the PVA layer by developing an imaging technique based on labelling with osmium tetroxide (OsO4) of the double bond of an oleyl acyl chloride used as an unsaturated hydrophobizing agent. The result is a brilliant marking of the modified PVA layer strictly limited to the top surface, as revealed by SEM images. Calculations based on simple assumptions about volume expansion due to modification were compared with experimental data, i.e. measurements of the thickness of the grafted layers. The results showed that, under our experimental conditions, the reagent penetrates a zone strictly limited to the upper part of the PVA layer and never reaches the board. Moreover, the second pass does not significantly increase the reagent's penetration depth, but does significantly increase the hydrophobicity of the grafted material, as shown by the Cobb measurements. The cardboard remains intact in all the experimental situations explored on a pilot scale. The increasing demand for disposable textile products, personal care items, and electronic commerce has led to a substantial rise in waste generation, particularly from nonwoven fabric masks (wNWFs) and corrugated cardboard (wCC). This study assessed the feasibility of utilizing these waste materials, which were produced in significant amounts during the COVID-19 pandemic, as both a matrix and reinforcement filler in wood–plastic composites (WPCs). The WPC was fabricated using either two extrusion cycles or thermokinetic homogenization, with both processes being followed by hot pressing. The formulations consisted of virgin polypropylene (vPP), wNWF, and wCC in proportions of 45, 45, and 10 wt %, respectively. The results demonstrated that the composites produced via two extrusion cycles exhibited a tensile strength that was 85% higher and three-point flexural strength three times greater than those produced through thermokinetic homogenization. These findings contribute to advancements in scientific and technological knowledge and offer an efficient solution for managing these types of waste, which continue to be generated post-pandemic. This research develops and evaluates a recyclable corrugated cardboard vibration isolation box reinforced with balsa wood as an alternative to traditional open trench methods for mitigating ground-borne environmental body waves. This study includes designing and testing scaled prototypes, laboratory analyses, prototype fabrication, and full-scale field experiments. In soft ground conditions, ensuring slope stability during deep excavations is a key engineering challenge for open trenches. For this purpose, scaled prototypes were subjected to laboratory tests to assess the resistance of the wave barrier's wall surface. Numerical analyses were also conducted to evaluate the strength of the internal lattice structure under various loads. A prototype was fabricated for on-site experiments simulating real-world conditions. Field experiments evaluated the vibration isolation performance of the proposed barrier. Accelerometer sensors were strategically placed to gather data, analyzing ground surface vibrations for free field motions to assess the vibration shielding efficiency of both the open trench method and the corrugated vibration isolation box, with and without Styrofoam infill. This study concludes that the recyclable corrugated vibration isolation box is a viable alternative, offering comparable or improved vibration isolation efficiency in soft soil conditions while promoting environmental sustainability using recyclable materials. The influence of carrier mobility on the space charge transport behavior inside the oil-impregnated pressboard insulation of converter transformers cannot be neglected. However, at present, current knowledge is usually derived from empirical or theoretical values, lacks experimental studies, and often ignores the effects of temperature and field strength under actual operating conditions. In this paper, based on the variable-temperature surface potential decay (SPD) method, a carrier mobility measurement platform for oil-impregnated pressboard is established, and the carrier mobility values for different combinations of oil and oil-impregnated pressboard are obtained experimentally to analyze and reveal the influence mechanisms of temperature and field strength on the carrier mobility. The results indicate the following: (1) The positive and negative carrier mobilities of oil-impregnated pressboard are in the range of 10−12–10−13 m2·V−1·s−1, and the negative carrier mobility is always higher than the positive carrier mobility. (2) The carrier mobility is positively correlated with the changes of temperature and field strength, and when the temperature increases from 20 °C to 80 °C, the positive and negative carrier mobilities increase by 4.01 times and 4.72 times, respectively; when the field strength increases from 1 kV/mm to 7 kV/mm, the positive and negative carrier mobility increases by 2.53 and 2.72 times, respectively. (3) The carrier mobility of the pressboard with a higher oil absorption rate changes more significantly with temperature; when the field strength is 7 kV/mm and the temperature increases from 20 °C to 80 °C, the positive polarity carrier mobility increases from 3.96 × 10−13 m2·V−1·s−1 to 2.64 × 10−11 m2·V−1·s−1, an increase of 66.67 times, while the increase in the carrier mobility of the pressboard with a lower oil absorption rate is only 1.59 times. (4) The carrier mobility of the naphthenic transformer oil-impregnated pressboard is higher than that of the paraffin-based transformer oil-impregnated pressboard, and the carrier mobility of two kinds of naphthenic transformer oil-impregnated pressboard is 3.16 times and 2.47 times higher than that of the paraffin-based transformer oil-impregnated pressboard, respectively, under the conditions of 60 °C and 7 kV/mm. (5) Utilizing the Darcy model and microscopic scanning results of the pressboard morphology, it was revealed that permeability and fiber structure are key factors influencing the variation in carrier mobility. This study examines the domestic solid waste management system in the LATAM region, using the city of Guayaquil in Ecuador as a case study. Through the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology, the study compares domestic and external recycling processes, evaluating their effects on global warming potential, fossil resource scarcity, and terrestrial ecotoxicity. The results reveal that increasing recycling rates significantly reduces environmental impacts, with domestic recycling offering slightly higher environmental benefits than external options. A demographic analysis using machine learning techniques identifies distinct patterns of waste generation across different population clusters, highlighting the need for tailored waste management strategies. The study also emphasizes the importance of accurate local data and the integration of recycling initiatives with market realities, particularly in the light of policies mandating recycled content in products like PET bottles. A sensitivity analysis of the waste recovery indicator (WRI) demonstrates the potential for substantial environmental and economic benefits with higher recycling rates. The findings suggest that, to advance towards a circular economy, Latin American cities like Guayaquil must enhance their recycling infrastructure, refine waste management policies, and focus on demographic-specific strategies. The European Union (EU) regulations mandate 10% of all food packaging to be reusable by 2030. United States (U.S.) exporters of specialty crops face new challenges in ensuring microbiological food safety using reusable packaging. A novel antimicrobial formulation consisting of ammonium carboxylate salt of capric acid and L-arginine (GS-2) was recently developed as a spray coating chemical for food packaging materials. In this study, we evaluated the antimicrobial efficacy of GS-2 against microbial strains representing three foodborne bacterial pathogens (Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enterica), one fungal spoilage organism (Aspergillus niger), and one surrogate viral pathogen (murine norovirus) on three reusable plastic materials (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, high-density polyethylene, and polypropylene) and one cardboard packaging material, respectively. Different chemical concentrations, exposure times, and storage conditions were individually evaluated for the relative antimicrobial efficacies of GS-2 against these microorganisms. Our results showed that GS-2 was highly effective for inactivating bacterial pathogens on both plastic and cardboard surfaces. For instance, 3% GS-2 achieved a >5 log CFU/in2 reduction in E. coli O157:H7, L. monocytogenes, and S. enterica on tested plastic surfaces at an exposure time of 60 min. However, its efficacy against A. niger and murine norovirus was less optimal, resulting in a ≤1 log CFU/in2 reduction on all tested surfaces. Based on our study, GS-2 demonstrated a strong potential as an antibacterial coating reagent for reusable food packaging materials to minimize pathogen contamination and ensure the safety of the specialty crops. Paper- and paperboard-based materials are alternatives to petroleum-based plastics in food packaging but unsuitable for their poor moisture and oil resistance. In this sense, fluorinated compounds improve water and grease repellency, though their use is controversial. Petroleum-based plastic coatings are used to create moisture barriers and heat-sealable layers on paperboard. Despite their good convertibility and barrier properties, the use of sustainable biobased polymer coatings as alternatives has attracted interest due to environmental concerns. In this study, the convertibility and water resistance of bio-based multilayered coating composed of biowax and polylactic acid (PLA) were investigated. Convertibility of the coatings was studied through heat-sealing experiments and by evaluating their durability when they were subjected to high stresses during creasing and folding. Surface imaging was performed to evaluate film formation and coating integrity. The wettability and water absorption properties of the coatings were also investigated. Different coating compositions resulted in different film formation processes, surface appearances, and water absorption. The presence of wax in a coating increased its hydrophobicity and reduced its water absorption already with the smallest addition in the coating. However, a high wax content in the coating caused defects in the coating layer, whereas the addition of PLA increased the convertibility of the coated material. This indicates that water resistance, heat sealability, and convertibility can be simultaneously achieved by optimizing the composition of wax and PLA coatings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The disposable cup market has long relied on paperboard with a fossilbased polymer coating as a replacement for 100% plastic cups. Paperboards with biobased or biodegradable polymer coatings are aimed at reducing the fossil resource consumption of the packaging sector. However, as their properties are inherently different from traditional, fossilbased materials, they can face runnability issues. In order to establish a connection between certain material properties and runnability issues, four coated paperboard materials with differing surface and strength properties were converted into 250 mL/8 oz disposable drinking cups. The materials included two single-side extrusion-coated paperboards and two two-sided dispersion-coated paperboards. The cups were manufactured in two separate runs with minor machine adjustments to affect the resulting cup geometry. A comparison of the manufactured cups and material properties revealed the materials' coefficient of friction to be the major cause of runnability issues or defects. The present research aimed to increase the accuracy of predicting the maximum force required to compress a solid cardboard box. Changes in the technology of solid cardboard production and the design of packaging help to increase the durability of packaging; however, typical estimation methods do not take these changes into account. By determining the number of important parameters of the box and using a specific approach, it was possible to develop a semiempirical model of the maximum force that compresses the box and simplifies its description. By using this model, the amount of solid board required for a specific package can be reduced without reducing the life of the box. Waste fiber reinforced concrete is gaining recognition as a high‐performance construction material, offering notable load‐bearing capacity, corrosion resistance, and enhanced durability features. As the building and construction industry focuses on sustainable practices, fibers derived from waste materials create an opportunity to be utilized further in composite designs. This study explores the tensile, compressive, and flexural behaviors of cardboard fibers (kraft fibers) and textile polyester fibers in concrete materials. The composite microstructure is also investigated using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to measure the bonding performance of the fibers within the cementitious matrix. Four mix designs were created using 2.5% textile fibers as a reinforcement agent and 5% silica fume modified kraft fibers (SFKFs) as a partial cement replacement. The combination of fibers achieved 44 MPa compressive strength, equaling the control. Tensile strength was enhanced by 5% when using the combination of the two fibers, achieving 3.58 MPa in comparison to 3.41 MPa. However, flexural strength was reduced among all fibrous concrete materials. SEM images distinguished the natural and synthetic characteristics associated with the two fibers within the cementitious matrix. Namely, demonstrating the chemical bonding of SFKFs in comparison with the physical bonding properties of the textile fibers. This study developed a VR-based mobile learning system to simulate the natural environment of a geopark for university students to learn geological knowledge. This learning method used a Google cardboard equipped with smartphones, where students can watch stereoscopic scenes and experience virtual environments as if visiting the geopark. In order to evaluate the learning effectiveness of the proposed system, we collected the learning outcomes, learning motivation, and cognitive load of students before and after the learning activity. The results indicated that students had significantly better learning achievement in their comprehension ability and learning motivation after using the proposed system. Therefore, it can be inferred that the VR-based mobile learning system not only helps students restructure knowledge and improves their comprehension skills but also enhances their learning motivation tendencies. In addition, the results showed that the students did not have high intrinsic and extraneous cognitive loads but had a high germane cognitive load. Salak (Salacca edulis Reinw.) in bunch form can be attractive to consumers because its own unique shape. The use of primary and secondary packaging can maintain fruit quality. This study aims to evaluate quality change of salak in bunches including physical damage, mechanical damage, physiological and microbiological damage. Salak bunches were stored for 22 days, with observations every 3 days to analyze fruit damage, TSS, weight loss, and fruit hardness. The study used a single-factor completely randomized design, involving 3 treatments: wooden crates (K1), cardboard without net foam (K2), and cardboard with net foam (K3). Data were analyzed descriptively, analysis of variance, and DMRT at the 5% level. Primary packaging was effective in reducing mechanical damage to fruit after 13 hours of transportation, with mechanical damage reaching 0 (zero) due to net foam. The type of packaging used had a significant effect on quality change of salak during storage, namely physical, physiological and microbiological damage, weight loss, hardness, and TSS. Cardboard packaging with net foam was the best treatment, showing low physiological and microbiological damage until the 16th day of storage, which amounted to 4.05, as well as a low rate of change in quality for 22 days. Food contact paperboard poses a potential risk of food contamination due to the possible release of chemicals (intentionally added or not), particularly in recycled paperboard. Water extractions were performed, according to wet food procedures, of paperboard samples collected from a manufacturer at the beginning and the end of a recycling production chain. Chemical analysis and hormonal activities in vitro of water extracts were studied. ICP–MS analysis confirmed the presence of 15 trace elements with lower concentrations after the recycling process, with the exception of chlorine. The chromatographic analyses demonstrated that the identified substances in the starting paperboard, before the recycling process, were approximately twice as high as in the end paperboard, after the recycling process. These substances included also natural wood products, chemical additives, and undesirable substances such as phthalates. Two major products (3,5-di-tert-butylphenol and methyl-2-pyrrolidone) were found in the starting and the end paperboard extracts, respectively. Two common substances were identified in both extracts: 2,4-di-tert-buthylphenol and dehydroabietic acid. Evaluation of potential endocrine disruption showed that the starting paperboard extract exhibited oestrogenic and antiandrogenic effects, while these effects nearly disappeared in the end paperboard extract. Air cleaning reduces indoor exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) during wildfire smoke events. However, resource and cost constraints may limit access to air cleaning during such an event, as both commercial devices and the higher-rated MERV filters that do-it-yourself (DIY) assemblies typically rely upon tend to be expensive and in short supply. With these constraints in mind, we developed and evaluated several configurations of a novel, DIY air cleaner that uses common household fabrics as filtration media. Clean air delivery rates (CADRs) of the devices were experimentally evaluated in two ways: first, with independent measurements of flowrates and single pass removal efficiencies, and second, via pull-down testing in a large chamber. With two layers of cotton batting fabric and a flowrate-increasing cardboard shroud attached, the device achieved particulate matter CADRs of 162, 134, and 206 m3/h in 0.02–0.3, 0.3–1, and 1–2.5 µm particle diameter bins, respectively, during chamber testing. Results indicate that these simple, inexpensive, fabric configurations can meaningfully reduce PM2.5 levels in smaller zones of a home, and thus represent a viable option for improving indoor air quality during rapid-onset air pollution events, such as wildfires. Corrugated cardboard is widely used for packaging due to its sturdiness and lightweight properties. However, its ability to withstand lateral forces during handling, transportation, and storage is critical for maintaining its structural integrity. In this study, the problem of understanding and quantifying the strain experienced by corrugated cardboard boxes under shear stresses at various points in their lifecycle is addressed. Specifically, a precise methodology for testing shear stresses was developed and validated, enhancing the understanding of the material's behaviour. Several key problems are addressed in this research, including the quantification of the amount of strain experienced by cardboard boxes from a warehouse to the final delivery, the development of a reliable testing methodology to measure shear stresses, and the understanding of the mechanical behaviour and structural integrity of corrugated cardboard under these conditions. It is anticipated that the findings will improve the design and durability of corrugated cardboard packaging, ensuring better performance during transportation and storage. This research contributes to the optimisation of logistics, the improvement of packaging quality, and the support of sustainable development by enhancing the reuse and recyclability of corrugated cardboard. Understanding the response of solid combustibles under high radiant fluxes is critical in predicting the thermal damage from extreme scenarios. Unlike the more moderate radiant fluxes in conventional hydrocarbon fires, extreme events such as strong explosion, concentrated sunlight and directed energy can generate dynamic radiant fluxes at the MW/m² level, creating a unique threat to materials. This study investigates the pyrolysis and spontaneous ignition behaviors of corrugated cardboard by using both experimental and numerical methods, under 10-cm dynamic high radiant fluxes ranging from 0.2 to 1.25 MW/m² for 10 s. The spontaneous ignition process at dynamic high radiant fluxes was recorded and quantified. Two ignition modes were found at the critical radiant flux of 0.4 MW/m², namely hot-gas spontaneous ignition and hot-residue piloted ignition. The latter is not the focus of this paper due to its extremely small probability of occurrence. The research reveals that the increase in flux intensity induces shorter delay times for both pyrolysis and ignition, lower ignition energy density, along with a corresponding rise in the critical mass flux and surface temperature at ignition moment. The simulation results are generally aligned with the experimental findings, despite some divergences may be attributed to model simplifications and parameter assumptions. Typical household recyclable bin in Australia contains around 60% of waste cardboard. Given the possibilities of developing a construction material, this study conducted a life cycle assessment (LCA) comparing the development of cardboard trusses with © timber trusses, encompassing production to construction. The results show that cardboard trusses offer significant environmental benefits, including a 73% reduction in climate change category, an 83% decrease in ozone-depleting potential, and almost complete avoidance of agricultural land occupation compared to timber trusses, showcasing their sustainability. In both material manufacturing and material transportation, cardboard trusses prioritize climate change mitigation, accounting for over half of the environmental impact. Timber trusses, in contrast, heavily impact land occupation and exhibit climate change dominance. A benefit analysis highlights advantages of cardboard trusses, particularly in reducing land occupation, sustainability, circular economy, and particulate matter formation. The peculiarities of the decoration of gravure imprints on cardboard using fluorescent inks are considered. The influence of the number of fluorescent impurities added to gravure printing ink on the optical indicators of printed image quality, particularly optical density, and gloss, is investigated. Increasing the number of fluorescent impurities added to the ink from 10 to 30% helps to increase the gloss on imprints from 2 to 15 units. Conducted thermogravimetric studies show the resistance of fluorescent imprints to the influence of temperatures during drying in the printing process. The topography of the surface of the substrates and its influence on the quality of imprints is studied. Conducted electron microscopic studies of imprints obtained with inks with different amounts of fluorescent impurities show their uniform distribution on the surface of the substrate. Studies of the fluorescence spectra of the ink and the imprints formed by it confirm the phenomenon of an increase in the intensity of the glow of printed images. The studies confirm the well-known influence of substrate roughness on the smoothness of gravure imprints. It is established that the absence of significant macro irregularities on the surface of Koppargloss FBB cardboard is due to the presence of two coating layers. Analysis of the surface profiles of FBB cardboard shows that its roughness parameter (Ra = 0.424 μm) is three times smaller compared to Incada Silk С GC1 cardboard (the roughness parameter Ra = 1.28 μm), with a single-layer coating. Such a pattern is also preserved on the imprints, which is reflected in their quality accordingly. Studies show that for imprints on GC1 cardboard, the average ΔE value is 2.23, for imprints on FBB cardboard, the average ΔE value is 3.71, which is due to the presence of double coating. The factors that can influence the process of fluorescence of printed images are outlined. The technological characteristics of inks for gravure printing on packaging are described.

The present research aimed to increase the accuracy of predicting the maximum force required to compress a solid cardboard box. Changes in the technology of solid cardboard production and the design of packaging help to increase the durability of packaging; however, typical estimation methods do not take these changes into account. By determining the number of important parameters of the box and using a specific approach, it was possible to develop a semiempirical model of the maximum force that compresses the box and simplifies its description. By using this model, the amount of solid board required for a specific package can be reduced without reducing the life of the box. The maximum force prediction method is also suitable for creating other box models at different moisture levels.

This study aims to design and fabricate a prototype of massage chair made of corrugated cardboard materials and evaluate its structural strength. It could be a pioneering study as no one had manifested or discussed it before. The prototype is currently made with dimensions of approximately 60 ´ 50 ´ 100 cm, consisting of 6 cardboard components, affords a reflexology sensation from solid rubber balls, and provides reclinable features at the backrest and footrest. The most prominent benefit of this cardboard massage chair compared to the commercialized ones is environmentally friendly and lightweight products. Moreover, the constructed component can be disassembled and folded, making it a portable massage chair. From the strength evaluation, the cardboard massage chair can still endure a load of 50 kg to the prototype’s seat, backrest, and footrest. However, multi loading directions (e.g., vertical, longitudinal, lateral), stress concentration, and fluctuating person weight would generate tremendous stress and lead to a more substantial possibility of damage and failures on the cardboard after several testing cycles. Therefore, further improvement processes should be investigated to develop an optimized version of cardboard massage chair in the future.

To solve the environmental pollution and harm to human health caused by the use of adhesives in traditional paperboard, the development of environmentally friendly mycelium paperboard has become a hot topic. Due to the high dipole moment and hydrogen bonding between macromolecules, hyphae can form clamp shaped connection structures for nutrient reproduction and transfer, and can grow on natural agricultural waste, forming a natural biocomposite material. This study determined the combination of Ganoderma weberianum/corn straw, and designed single factor cultivation conditions such as cultivation time, straw particle size, and fructose addition to explore the effects on the mechanical properties, waterproof properties, and thermal decomposition performance of the hyphal paperboard formed by hot pressing. The optimal cultivation process was obtained through orthogonal experiments. The experimental results indicate that various factors have varying degrees of influence on the edgewise strength, flexural stiffness, and static bending strength and waterproofness of paperboard. Firstly, when the cultivation time was 30 days, the flexural stiffness reached 16.63 mN/m, which was 21.2% higher than the flexural stiffness of kraft paper (13.10 mN/m). Moreover, with the increase of cultivation time, the water absorption (24 hours) had also decreased from 3.92% to 1.27%. Secondly, previous research results have shown that the addition of fructose, glucose, and sucrose increases the biomass growth rate of strains. In this study, fructose was chosen as an exogenous nutrient, and the results showed that when a mass fraction of 5% fructose was added, the mechanical properties were the best, with a flexural stiffness of 18.87 mN/m, which was 30.5% higher than that of kraft paper (13.10 mN/m). Thirdly, the particle size of the sbstrate has a significant impact on the appearance and properties of the material. The results show that, from the appearance perspective, the mycelium paperboard made of 0.165～0.250 mm particle size has the closest appearance and feel to kraft paper. At the same time, during the testing period, it was found that the mycelium paperboard made of 0.165～0.250 mm straw was the least prone to deformation and loosening, and the molding effect was significantly improved compared to other components. In terms of mechanical properties, the edgewise strength increased by 17.4%, the static bending strength increased by 14.9%, and the flexural stiffness increased by 57.3%. The experimental results show that the degree of influence of various factors on the edgewise strength, flexural stiffness, and static bending strength of paperboard is in the order of particle size, cultivation time,fructose addition amount. When the particle size is 0.165～0.250 mm, the cultivation time is 30 days, and the fructose addition of 5.0%, the edgewise strength of the prepared paperboard is 14.36 N/mm, the static bending strength is 10.89 MPa, and the flexural stiffness is 33.09 mN/m. As the particle size decreases, the water absorption rate and water thickness expansion rate of the paperboard after 24 hours of water absorption decrease to 0.86% and 0.59%. The mycelium paperboard prepared by different single factors has the same thermal decomposition process, starting at around 150 ℃ and reaching its maximum at 350 ℃. A meticulous parametric exploration scrutinizes critical aspects such as buckling resistance, charging current, plating time, and electrode configurations for copper electroplating. Key findings highlight the exceptional stability of copper electroplating on filter paper, exhibiting robust resistance against environmental variations and bending angles spanning +180° to −180°. Utilizing higher pencil grade material and maintaining a minimum 4 cm distance with a voltage range of 3 to 1.44 V ensures uniform, controlled plating without burning, optimizing the electrode area below 1 cm2 for enhanced practicality. The research underscores the longevity and durability of copper‐plated filter paper, with negligible resistance changes even after 1000 folds. The impact of perforation patterns on the compressive strength of cardboard packaging is a critical concern in the packaging industry, where optimizing material usage without compromising structural integrity is essential. This study aims to investigate how different perforation designs affect the load-bearing capacity of cardboard boxes. Utilizing finite element method (FEM) simulations, we assessed the compressive strength of packaging made of various types of corrugated cardboards, including E, B, C, EB, and BC flutes with different heights. Mechanical testing was conducted to obtain accurate material properties for the simulations. Packaging dimensions were varied to generalize the findings across different sizes. Results showed that perforation patterns significantly influenced the compressive strength, with reductions ranging from 14% to 43%, compared to non-perforated packaging. Notably, perforations on multiple walls resulted in the highest strength reductions. The study concludes that while perforations are necessary for functionality and aesthetics, their design must be carefully considered to minimize negative impacts on structural integrity. The characterization and modeling of the out-of-plane behavior of fiber-based materials is essential for understanding their mechanical properties and improving their performance in various applications, especially in the forming process. Despite this, research on paper and paperboard has mainly focused on its in-plane behavior rather than its out-of-plane behavior. However, for accurate material characterization and modeling, it is critical to consider the out-of-plane behavior. In particular, delamination occurs during forming processes such as creasing, folding, and deep drawing. In this study, three material models for paperboard are presented: a single all-material continuum model and two composite models using different cohesion methods. The two composite models decouple in-plane and out-of-plane behavior and consist of continuum models describing the behavior of individual layers and cohesive interface models connecting the layers. Material characterization experiments are performed to derive the model parameters and verify the models. The models are validated using three-point bending and bulge tests and show good agreement. A case study is also conducted on the application of the three models in the simulation of a deep drawing process with respect to wrinkle formation. By comparing the simulation results of wrinkle formation in the deep drawing process, the composite models, especially the cohesive interface composite model, show greater accuracy in replicating the experimental results, indicating that a single continuum model can also be used to represent wrinkles. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are used in food contact materials (FCMs), e.g. as production aids in the fabrication of PTFE based coatings for kitchenware or as additives in paper and board. Growing concerns about the environment and health related to PFAS have led to an increasing interest in monitoring PFAS levels in FCMs as well as their migration into food. In this study, method development for the analysis of PFAS by thermal desorption – gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) was done. In addition to fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs), which are the only PFAS commonly analysed by GC-MS, it was proven that perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) and per- and polyfluoroether carboxylic acids (PFECAs) as well as their thermolysis products, perfluoroethers (PFEs) and perfluoroalkenes, can be analysed by GC-MS without prior derivatization. Screening for PFCAs and FTOHs was possible by electron impact ionization (EI) using group specific SIM fragments. Confirmation of identity has been done by EI scans as well as chemical ionization (CI) SIM measurements. LODs (limits of detection) of PFCAs, FTOHs and PFECAs in the TD-GC-MS instrument were in the low pg range. Thermal degradation of PFCAs and PFECAs during TD-GC-MS measurement was investigated. Tensile properties of paperboard have been characterized, and it has been shown that paper tensile properties are dependent on the strain rate. Tensile testing was done using strain rates in the range 10−4–3 s−1, which corresponds to crosshead movements ranging from 1 up to 24,000 mm/min, using an electro-mechanical testing machine. Two paperboards, and its free-laid top, middle and bottom plies were characterized in MD and CD. The testing was limited by the maximum crosshead speed of the testing machine. Initially 50 mm (grip to grip) long samples were tested, but to test even higher strain rates also short samples with length of 5 mm were tested. The results showed that ultimate strength increased by 9 % per decade increasing of testing rate, and Young's modulus increased by 7 %. This shows that the previously reported rule of thumb of 10 % increase of in-plane strength per decade increase of strain rate holds. The testing here shows that this is valid also at strain rates as high as 3 s−1. Moreover, the strain at break in CD for long tensile specimens was observed to decrease when the strain rate exceeded 0.1 s−1, which resulted in straighter crack paths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main drawback of recycled fibers is the deterioration of fiber bonding dependent papermaking properties (like tensile, tear and burst indexes) due to the hornification effect, as a results of drying during papermaking. In order to improve the papermaking properties through increasing fiber bonding, an alkaline treatment of Old Corrugated Cardboard (OCC) followed by fractionation were carried out in this investigation. Alkaline treatment dissolved 6.6 % organics (carbohydrates and lignin) and fibers became wider as a results of fiber swelling. The alkali treatment decreased fines from 39.9 % to 28.5 %, consequently, decreased drainage resistance from 26 °SR to 21 °SR. The papermaking properties of OCC pulp increased on alkaline treatment. Fiber fractionation of alkaline treated OCC further increased papermaking properties. At 40 °SR value, the tensile index, burst index and tear index of alkaline treated longer fiber fraction was 49 N m/g, 3.2 kPa m2/g, 7.2 mN m2/g, respectively while it was 40.4 N m/g, 2.1 kPa m2/g and 6.1 kPa m2/g, for non-treated longer fiber fraction, respectively. Flexural vibration (FV), torsional vibration (TV), static torsion (ST), longitudinal vibration (OAV), and tension (OAT) of 45° off-axis tests of flat pieces of cardboards were analyzed to determine the in-plane shear modulus (IPSM) using samples of various widths. The analyses were performed with simulations using the finite element method (FEM) for models with and without lamination and physical experiments using cardboard samples. For the FV, TV, and ST tests, the IPSM was calculated using binary search (BS) and linear regression (LR). The FEM results suggest that the IPSM values obtained from the TV and ST test simulations were affected by lamination. In contrast, the effect of lamination was not clear in the FV, OAV, and OAT test simulations. The coefficient of variation obtained from the FV experiments was often larger than that obtained from other tests. Despite this variation, the FV test is more attractive than the other tests because the experiments could be performed easily, and the effect of lamination could be reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We explored the aging effects on insulating materials used in power transformers through dielectric spectroscopy. Frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) was conducted for both aged and new Kraft paper and pressboard samples to determine their dielectric properties across a temperature range of 40-100 °C for pressboard and 40-70 °C for Kraft paper. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to classify the data, identify key factors contributing to variance, and elucidate the relationships between different parameters. The analysis revealed positive correlations between conductivity and frequency, as well as between permittivity and tan delta, with distinct differences in behavior observed between aged and new samples at lower frequencies. Additionally, the impact of temperature was evident, with increased temperature leading to an upward shift in dielectric behavior. At lower temperatures, aging had a reduced effect on the materials' properties. Modern μ -CT scans offer non-destructive three-dimensional microstructure analysis of various materials. Despite small density contrasts, this technology also accurately captures the complex network structure of paper and paperboard. It provides detailed insight into the fiber orientation distribution in paper, which was previously unattainable with existing measurement methods. The image analysis results are applicable for numerical fiber network models, and simulations based on these models can significantly improve our understanding of the microstructural influence on macrostructural paper properties, such as strength, stiffness, and curl tendency. This work presents a new method for investigating the microstructural fiber orientation in paperboard. Orientation tensors obtained from μ -CT scan image processing are extracted and evaluated. Based on the direction of the orientation tensor's first eigenvector, the fiber orientation distribution is determined and then approximated by periodic and non-periodic probability density functions (PDFs). In this study, 40 commercial paperboard samples, each consisting of three plies, were analyzed. From a given set of commonly used PDFs, the best fitting ones have been identified based on their original location in the paper roll and on their ply. It was found that the von Mises PDF provided the most accurate representation of fiber orientation distribution in the middle ply, while the Elliptical PDF was the most suitable for the outer plies. Moreover, a more pronounced fiber orientation anisotropy was observed at the edges of the paper roll than in its center. The best PDFs and their function parameters are provided to allow for direct usage in numerical microstructure models of paperboard, thus enhancing their representativeness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cellulosic material is considered to be excellent for food packaging due to its low cost, easy degradability, and high recyclability rates. However, its application is still limited due to its porous structure and high hydrophilicity, which provide high permeabilities to grease, gas and water vapor. One solution to fix these issues and to bring new functionalities that can also extend food shelf life is to coat the paper substrate with biopolymers containing nanoparticles and/or components with antioxidant and/or antimicrobial activities. In this regard, the aim of this study was to review some aspects of the current knowledge critically and didactically on applications of biopolymer-based coatings incorporated with active components and/or nanoparticles on paper/paperboard materials usually applied as primary cellulosic active packaging. Studies have shown that this combination can positively improve the physical, mechanical, and barrier properties of cellulosic packaging, along with the enhancement of antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. A better understanding of these aspects enables the use of other active compounds to develop more functionality to the packaging itself as well as to apply it to food packaging in general. The purpose of the work is to study by experimental analysis and finite element methods the mechanical response of a packaging, consisting of a corrugated cardboard container, used for the transport of fruit and vegetables. During the container design, three different configurations were selected which differ both in the choice of liner and in the type of wave. In particular, the type E, F and N microwaves were chosen. They are characterized by a lower amplitude than the high and medium waves commonly used in corrugated cardboard packaging, making it possible to reduce material consumption and, consequently, costs. In the initial phase of the study, experimental tests were performed to evaluate the mechanical strength of the liners. In addition, edge compression tests (ECTs) were performed to determine the stacking resistance of the structure. The break‐in resistance of the structures was analysed using a test conducted according to an internal standard, called strength packaging test (SPT). Subsequently, a parametric study was set up with the finite element method for the simulation of the mechanical behaviour of the three structures, using the homogenization technique. The comparison between the maximum total deformations, measured experimentally and calculated numerically, has highlighted the need to introduce corrective coefficients to improve the homogenization of the wave structure. In this way, it was possible to improve the matching of the results obtained on the structures simulated by the homogenization technique and those obtained on the corresponding real structures. Cardboard packaging is a good example of sustainable material use, yet even more sustainable solutions are available, such as replacing wood fibers with those from alternative sources like agricultural waste. In our research, we produced paperboard from fibers obtained from waste tomato stems using a pilot paper machine, and its basic, surface, and mechanical properties were then determined. Additionally, we produced corrugated cardboard from the tomato fiber-based paperboard and analyzed its performance under different environmental conditions. A comparative analysis was made with commercial corrugated cardboard to determine the differences in mechanical properties and the quality of the prints made using the flexographic printing technique. The results indicated that the properties of tomato fiber-based paperboard and corrugated cardboard are sufficient for many packaging applications. Analyses showed that the mechanical properties of both commercial and corrugated cardboard produced from tomato stems were affected by the environmental conditions, while the change in print quality was minor. Exposure to high humidity had a much greater effect than exposure to low temperature. High humidity lowered the tensile and bursting strength and resistance to compression, resulting in decreased strength and stiffness, while low temperature had a less severe effect. Nevertheless, corrugated cardboard made from tomato-based paperboard can be used for storage of fresh produce locally, as well as for transport packaging, provided the transport box is designed to address its poor stacking strength. The print quality of this cardboard is also suitable for transport packaging, and the readability of the UHF RFID tags remains satisfactory. The findings of this study have significant implications for the development of sustainable materials. The successful use of tomato stems, a waste product from agriculture, in the production of corrugated cardboard supports the circular economy by turning waste into a valuable resource. Children with ADHD fail to establish good relationships with others and practice undesirable behaviors that disturb those around them. Additionally, this disorder may create difficulties in social performance and adaptation to different life contexts. Nonetheless, in light of recent technological advancements, traditional education programs no longer cover deficiencies resulting from this disorder. It is also no longer attractive among children with ADHD. Therefore, in this research study, the researchers designed four Google Cardboard Virtual Reality (VR) applications that were developed with several domain experts' supervision to enhance four social skills (greeting back, waiting for a turn during an ordering, not interrupting others while talking, and cooperating) among children with ADHD which had the potential to help them integrate smoothly into society. A quasi-experimental study was conducted for one group in the Developmental and Behavioral Disorders Clinics and Centers in Maternity and Children's Hospital in Najran Region, Saudi Arabia. The results were promising and showed an improvement in the social skills of the participants with mild or moderate ADHD symptoms. The primary heat transfer source in the conventional multi-cylinder drying of paper and board is conduction. Conduction is facilitated by high-tension contact with steam-heated cylinders, while convective drying, the main mass transfer source, operates as heated air flows over the article web in the pockets. This conduction process occurs at elevated temperatures and contact pressures to ensure effective contact between the wet paper web and the heated cylinders. The contact pressures and temperatures of the hot surface significantly influence the conductive drying characteristics. This research paper presents an experimental study that involves designing a simple lab-scale setup with in-situ and continuous sensing capabilities for various commercially available grades of paper and board. Embedded thermocouples measure the temperatures of the heated platen and the sheet, allowing the collection of flux data to determine heat transfer characteristics. The goal of this study is to ascertain the instantaneous contact coefficients for different basis weights as a function of moisture content. Water can cause damage to power transformers by accelerating aging processes, reducing the dielectric margin, decreasing the partial-discharge inception voltage, and increasing the risk of unexpected failures. Modern electrical companies utilize a variety of drying techniques but sometimes do not comprehend them, making drying less effective. To address these challenges, this study proposes the application of synthetic ester to dry distribution transformers because water dissolves better in the ester than other dielectric liquids. An improved laboratory model of transformer insulation was used for the investigation. This model dried the ester using a molecular filter and carefully selected adsorbed weight. Pressboard strip water content before and after drying was analyzed to determine the drying efficacy of the cellulose insulation. The water content was measured using the Karl-Fischer titration method. The investigation proved that the drying procedure worked. At an ester moisture level of 105-120 ppm and an insulation system temperature of 70°C, samples dried for 5 days showed above 1% water loss.
