We have carried out exclusive measurements for the photoproduction of an $\eta$ meson from a proton target with an egg-shaped calorimeter made of BGO crystals (BGOegg) and forward charged-particle detectors at the SPring-8 LEPS2 beamline. The differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries of the $\gamma p \to \eta p$ reaction are measured in a center-of-mass energy ($W$) range of $1.82$-$2.32$ GeV and a polar angle range of $-1.0 < \cos{\theta^{\eta}_{\mathrm{c.m.}}} < 0.6$. The reaction is identified by selecting a proton and two $\gamma$'s produced by an $\eta$-meson decay. The kinematic fit method was employed to select the reaction candidate with the confidence level larger than $1$\%. A bump structure at $W$ = $2.0$-$2.3$ GeV in the differential cross section is confirmed at extremely backward $\eta$ polar angles, where the existing data are inconsistent with each other. This bump structure is likely associated with high-spin resonances that couple with $s\bar{s}$ quarks. The results of the photon beam asymmetries in a wide $\eta$ polar angle range are new for the photon beam energies exceeding $2.1$ GeV. These results are not reproduced by the existing partial wave analyses. They provide an additional constraint to nucleon resonance studies at high energies., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

We have constructed a new laser-Compton-scattering facility, called the LEPS2 beamline, at the 8-GeV electron storage ring, SPring-8. This facility provides a linearly polarized photon beam in a tagged energy range of 1.3--2.4 GeV. Thanks to a small divergence of the low-emittance storage-ring electrons, the tagged photon beam has a size (sigma) suppressed to about 4 mm even after it travels about 130 m to the experimental building that is independent of the storage ring building and contains large detector systems. This beamline is designed to achieve a photon beam intensity higher than that of the first laser-Compton-scattering beamline at SPring-8 by adopting the simultaneous injection of up to four high-power laser beams and increasing a transmittance for the long photon-beam path up to about 77%. The new beamline is under operation for hadron photoproduction experiments.

The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time ($T_1$) of lanthanum and aluminum nuclei in a single crystal of lanthanum aluminate doped with neodymium ions is studied to estimate the feasibility of the dynamically polarized lanthanum target applicable to beam experiments. The application of our interest is the study of fundamental discrete symmetries in the spin optics of epithermal neutrons. This study requires a highly flexible choice of the applied magnetic field for neutron spin control and favors longer $T_1$ under lower magnetic field and at higher temperature. The $T_1$ of $^{139}{\rm La}$ and ${}^{27}{\rm Al}$ was measured under magnetic fields of $0.5$-$2.5$ T and at temperatures of $0.1$-$1.5$ K and found widely distributed up to 100 h. The result suggests that the $T_1$ can be as long as $T_1 \sim$ 1 h at $0.1$ K with a magnetic field of $0.1$ T, which partially fulfills the requirement of the neutron beam experiment. We measured missing mass spectrum of the $^{12}{\rm C}(\gamma,p)$ reaction for the first time in coincidence with potential decay products from $\eta'$ bound nuclei. We tagged an ($\eta+p$) pair associated with the $\eta'N\to\eta N$ process in a nucleus. After applying kinematical selections to reduce backgrounds, no signal events were observed in the bound-state region. An upper limit of the signal cross section in the opening angle $\cos\theta^{\eta p}_{lab}<-0.9$ was obtained to be 2.2 nb/sr at the 90$\%$ confidence level. It is compared with theoretical cross sections, whose normalization ambiguity is suppressed by measuring a quasifree $\eta'$ production rate. Our results indicate a small branching fraction of the $\eta'N\to\eta N$ process and/or a shallow $\eta'$-nucleus potential., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We report on the frozen-spin polarized hydrogen--deuteride (HD) targets for photoproduction experiments at SPring-8/LEPS. Pure HD gas with a small amount of ortho-H2 (~0.1%) was liquefied and solidified by liquid helium. The temperature of the produced solid HD was reduced to about 30 mK with a dilution refrigerator. A magnetic field (17 T) was applied to the HD to grow the polarization with the static method. After the aging of the HD at low temperatures in the presence of a high-magnetic field strength for 3 months, the polarization froze. Almost all ortho-H2 molecules were converted to para-H2 molecules that exhibited weak spin interactions with the HD. If the concentration of the ortho-H2 was reduced at the beginning of the aging process, the aging time can be shortened. We have developed a new nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system to measure the relaxation times (T1) of the 1H and 2H nuclei with two frequency sweeps at the respective frequencies of 726 and 111 MHz, and succeeded in the monitoring of the polarization build-up at decreasing temperatures from 600 to 30 mK at 17 T. This technique enables us to optimize the concentration of the ortho-H2 and to efficiently polarize the HD target within a shortened aging time., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) offers advantages over conventional fan-beam CT in that it requires a shorter time and less exposure to obtain images. CBCT has found a wide variety of applications in patient positioning for image-guided radiation therapy, extracting radiomic information for designing patient-specific treatment, and computing fractional dose distributions for adaptive radiation therapy. However, CBCT images suffer from low soft-tissue contrast, noise, and artifacts compared to conventional fan-beam CT images. Therefore, it is essential to improve the image quality of CBCT. In this paper, we propose a synthetic approach to translate CBCT images with deep neural networks. Our method requires only unpaired and unaligned CBCT images and planning fan-beam CT (PlanCT) images for training. Once trained, 3D reconstructed CBCT images can be directly translated to high-quality PlanCT-like images. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method with images obtained from 24 prostate patients, and we provide a statistical and visual comparison. The image quality of the translated images shows substantial improvement in voxel values, spatial uniformity, and artifact suppression compared to those of the original CBCT. The anatomical structures of the original CBCT images were also well preserved in the translated images. Our method enables more accurate adaptive radiation therapy, and opens up new applications for CBCT that hinge on high-quality images.

Differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> pi- Delta++(1232) reaction have been measured for 0.7

We report the measurement of the $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+}\Lambda$ and $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+}\Sigma^{0}$ reactions at SPring-8. The differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries are measured at forward $K^{+}$ production angles using linearly polarized tagged-photon beams in the range of $E_{\gamma}=1.5$--3.0 GeV. With increasing photon energy, the cross sections for both $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+}\Lambda$ and $\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+}\Sigma^{0}$ reactions decrease slowly. Distinct narrow structures in the production cross section have not been found at $E_{\gamma}=1.5$--3.0 GeV. The forward peaking in the angular distributions of cross sections, a characteristic feature of $t$-channel exchange, is observed for the production of $\Lambda$ in the whole observed energy range. A lack of similar feature for $\Sigma^{0}$ production reflects a less dominant role of $t$-channel contribution in this channel. The photon-beam asymmetries remain positive for both reactions, suggesting the dominance of $K^{*}$ exchange in the $t$ channel. These asymmetries increase gradually with the photon energy, and have a maximum value of +0.6 for both reactions. Comparison with theoretical predictions based on the Regge trajectory in the $t$ channel and the contributions of nucleon resonances indicates the major role of $t$-channel contributions as well as non-negligible effects of nucleon resonances in accounting for the reaction mechanism of hyperon photoproduction in this photon energy regime., Comment: published version, two-column format, 10 pages, 8 figures

The differential cross sections and decay angular distributions for coherent $\phi$-meson photoproduction from helium-4 have been measured for the first time at forward angles with linearly polarized photons in the energy range $E_{\gamma} = \text{1.685-2.385 GeV}$. Thanks to the target with spin-parity $J^{P} = 0^{+}$, unnatural-parity exchanges are prohibited, and thus natural-parity exchanges can be investigated clearly. The decay asymmetry with respect to photon polarization is shown to be very close to the maximal value. This ensures the dominance ($> 94\%$) of natural-parity exchanges in this reaction. To evaluate the contribution from natural-parity exchanges to the forward cross section ($\theta = 0^\circ$) for the $\gamma p \rightarrow \phi p$ reaction near the threshold, the energy dependence of the forward cross section ($\theta = 0^\circ$) for the $\gamma {^{4}\text{He}} \rightarrow \phi {^{4}\text{He}}$ reaction was analyzed. The comparison to $\gamma p \rightarrow \phi p$ data suggests that enhancement of the forward cross section arising from natural-parity exchanges, and/or destructive interference between natural-parity and unnatural-parity exchanges is needed in the $\gamma p \rightarrow \phi p$ reaction near the threshold., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Differential cross sections at $t=t_{\text{min}}$ and decay asymmetries for the $\gamma p\rightarrow\phi p$ reaction have been measured using linearly polarized photons in the range 1.5 to 2.9 GeV. These cross sections were used to determine the Pomeron strength factor. The cross sections and decay asymmetries are consistently described by the $t$-channel Pomeron and pseudoscalar exchange model in the $E_{\gamma}$ region above 2.37 GeV. In the lower energy region, an excess over the model prediction is observed in the energy dependence of the differential cross sections at $t=t_{\text{min}}$. This observation suggests that additional processes or interference effects between Pomeron exchange and other processes appear near the threshold region., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

Differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries for the gamma p -> pi+ n reaction have been measured for 0.6

The ($^{11}$B,$^{11}$Li) double charge-exchange reaction (DCER) at $E(^{11}$B)/$A$=80 MeV was measured for the first time to demonstrate the feasibility of the reaction for studying neutrino nuclear responses for double beta decays (DBD). The $^{13}$C($^{11}$B,$^{11}$Li)$^{13}$O reaction shows strengths at the ground state and low and high excitation giant resonance regions. The $^{56}$Fe ($^{11}$B,$^{11}$Li) $^{56}$Ni reaction shows the large strengths in the possible double giant resonance region and beyond, but shows no strengths in the low excitation region below 5 MeV, suggesting strong concentration of the DBD strength at the high excitation region. The DCER is used to evaluate the spin isospin strengths relevant to DBD responses., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

The $\phi$-$\Lambda(1520)$ interference effect in the $\gamma p\to K^+K^-p$ reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between $\phi$ and $\Lambda(1520)$ production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when $K^+K^-$ pairs are observed at forward angles, but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the $\sqrt{s}=2.1$ GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for $\phi$ photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange and rescattering processes via other hyperon states.

Deformable self-propelled particles provide us with one of the most important nonlinear dissipative systems, which are related, for example, to the motion of microorganisms. It is emphasized that this is a subject of localized objects in non-equilibrium open systems. We introduce a coupled set of ordinary differential equations to study various dynamics of individual soft particles due to the nonlinear couplings between migration, spinning and deformation. By introducing interactions among the particles, the collective dynamics and its collapse are also investigated by changing the particle density and the interaction strength. We stress that assemblies of self-propelled particles also exhibit a variety of non-equilibrium localized patterns.

A laser-Compton backscattering beam, which we call a `Laser-Electron Photon' beam, was upgraded at the LEPS beamline of SPring-8. We accomplished the gains in backscattered photon beam intensities by factors of 1.5--1.8 with the injection of two adjacent laser beams or a higher power laser beam into the storage ring. The maximum energy of the photon beam was also extended from 2.4 GeV to 2.9 GeV with deep-ultraviolet lasers. The upgraded beams have been utilized for hadron photoproduction experiments at the LEPS beamline. Based on the developed methods, we plan the simultaneous injection of four high power laser beams at the LEPS2 beamline, which has been newly constructed at SPring-8. As a simulation result, we expect an order of magnitude higher intensities close to 10$^7$ sec$^{-1}$ and 10$^6$ sec$^{-1}$ for tagged photons up to 2.4 GeV and 2.9 GeV, respectively., Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures, Submitted to Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A on 29 May 2013

To gain insight into the unconventional superconductivity of Fe-pnictides with no electron pockets, we measure the thermal conductivity $\kappa$ and penetration depth $\lambda$ in the heavily hole-doped regime of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. The residual thermal conductivity $(\kappa/T)_{T \rightarrow 0\,{\rm K}}$ and $T$-dependence of $\lambda$ consistently indicate the fully gapped superconductivity at $x=0.76$ and the (line) nodal superconductivity at higher hole concentrations. The magnitudes of $\frac{\kappa}{T}\cdot T_c|_{T \rightarrow 0\,{\rm K}}$ and $\frac{d\lambda}{d(T/T_c)}$ at low temperatures, both of which are determined by the properties of the low-energy excitations, exhibit a highly unusual non-monotonic x-dependence. These results indicate a dramatic change of the nodal characteristics in a narrow doping range, suggesting a doping crossover of the gap function between the s-wave states with and without sign reversal between $\Gamma$-centered hole pockets., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

A search for $K^-pp$ bound state (the lightest kaonic nucleus) has been performed using the $\gamma d \rightarrow K^+ \pi^- \rm{X}$ reaction at E$_\gamma$=1.5-2.4 GeV at LEPS/SPring-8. The differential cross section of $K^+ \pi^-$ photo-production off deuterium has been measured for the first time in this energy region, and a bump structure was searched for in the inclusive missing mass spectrum. A statistically significant bump structure was not observed in the region from 2.22 to 2.36 GeV/$c^2$, and the upper limits of the differential cross section for the $K^-pp$ bound state production were determined to be 0.1$-$0.7 $\mu$ b (95$%$ confidence level) for a set of assumed binding energy and width values.

We report the measurement of differential cross sections for $\omega$ and $\eta'$ photoproduction from protons at backward angles ($-1.0<\cos\Theta_{C.M}^{X}<-0.8$) using linearly polarized photons at $E_{\gamma}=$$1.5-3.0$ GeV. Differential cross sections for $\omega$ mesons are larger than the predicted $u$-channel contribution in the energy range $2.0\leq\sqrt{s}\leq2.4$ GeV. The differential cross sections for $\omega$ and $\eta'$ mesons become closer to the predicted $u$-channel contribution at $\sqrt{s}>2.4$ GeV. A bump structure in the $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the differential cross sections for $\eta'$ mesons was observed at $\sqrt{s}\sim$2.35 GeV., Comment: 15pages 4figures

We present infrared transmission spectroscopy study of the inter-Landau-level excitations in quasi-neutral epitaxial graphene nanoribbon arrays. We observed a substantial deviation in energy of the $L_{0(-1)}$$\to$$L_{1(0)}$ transition from the characteristic square root magnetic-field dependence of two-dimensional graphene. This deviation arises from the formation of upper-hybrid mode between the Landau level transition and the plasmon resonance. In the quantum regime the hybrid mode exhibits a distinct dispersion relation, markedly different from that expected for conventional two-dimensional systems and highly doped graphene.

The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in even-A Cd isotopes has been studied by inelastic ${\alpha}$-scattering at 100 MeV/u and at extremely forward angles, including 0deg. The asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility extracted from the ISGMR in Cd isotopes is found to be $K_{\tau} = -555 \pm 75$ MeV, confirming the value previously obtained from the Sn isotopes. ISGMR strength has been computed in relativistic RPA using NL3 and FSUGold effective interactions. Both models significantly overestimate the centroids of the ISGMR strength in the Cd isotopes. Combined with other recent theoretical effort, the question of the "softness" of the open-shell nuclei in the tin region remains open still., Comment: Minor changes in text. We have developed a cryogenic distillation system to purify Hydrogen-Deuteride (HD) gas for a polarized HD target in LEPS experiments at SPring-8. A small amount of ortho-H$_2$ ($\sim$0.01%) in the HD gas plays an important role in efficiently polarizing the HD target. Since there are 1$\sim$5% impurities of H$_2$ and D$_2$ in commercially available HD gases, it is inevitable that the HD gas is purified up to $\sim$99.99%. The distillation system has a cryogenic pot (17$\sim$21 K) containing many small stainless steel cells called Heli-pack. Commercial HD gas with an amount of 5.2 mol is fed into the pot. We carried out three distillation runs by changing temperatures (17.5 K and 20.5 K) and gas extraction speeds (1.3 ml/min and 5.2 ml/min). The extracted gas was analyzed by using a gas analyzer system combining a quadrupole mass spectrometer with a gas chromatograph. The HD gas of 1 mol with a purity better than 99.99% has been successfully obtained. The effective NTS (Number of Theoretical Stages), which is an indicator of the distillator performances, is obtained as 37.2$\pm$0.6. This value is in reasonable agreement with a designed value of 37.9. A portable NMR polarimeter system has been developed to measure the polarization of a polarized Hydrogen-Deuteride (HD) target for hadron photoproduction experiments at SPring-8. The polarized HD target is produced at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka university and is transported to SPring-8. The HD polarization should be monitored at both places. We have constructed the portable NMR polarimeter system by replacing the devices in the conventional system with the software system with PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation (PXI). The weight of the NMR system is downsized from 80 kg to 7 kg, and the cost is reduced to 25%. We check the performance of the portable NMR polarimeter system. The signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of the NMR signal for the portable system is about 50% of that for the conventional NMR system. A gas analyzer system has been developed to analyze Hydrogen-Deuteride (HD) gas for producing frozen-spin polarized HD targets, which are used for hadron photoproduction experiments at SPring-8. Small amounts of ortho-H$_{2}$ and para-D$_{2}$ gas mixtures ($\sim$0.01%) in the purified HD gas are a key to realize a frozen-spin polarized target. In order to obtain reliable concentrations of these gas mixtures in the HD gas, we produced a new gas analyzer system combining two independent measurements with the gas chromatography and the QMS. The para-H$_{2}$, ortho-H$_{2}$, HD, and D$_{2}$ are separated using the retention time of the gas chromatography and the mass/charge. It is found that the new gas analyzer system can measure small concentrations of $\sim$0.01% for the otho-H$_2$ and D$_2$ with good S/N ratios., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

We investigate the dynamical coupling between the motion and the deformation of a single self-propelled domain based on two different model systems in two dimensions. One is represented by the set of ordinary differential equations for the center of gravity and two tensor variables characterizing deformations. The other is an active cell model which has an internal mechanism of motility and is represented by the partial differential equation for deformations. Numerical simulations show a rich variety of dynamics, some of which are common to the two model systems. The origin of the similarity and the difference is discussed., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We investigate quantum transport of electrons, phase solitons, etc. through mesoscopic networks of zero-dimensional quantum dots. Straight and circular ladders are chosen as networks with each coupled with three semi-infinite leads (with one incoming and the other two outgoing). Two transmission probabilities (TPs) as a function of the incident energy $\epsilon$ show a transition from anti-phase aperiodic to degenerate periodic spectra at the critical energy $\epsilon_c$ which is determined by a bifurcation point of the bulk energy dispersions. TPs of the circular ladder depend only on the parity of the winding number. Introduction of a single missing bond (MB) or missing step doubles the period of the periodic spectra at $\epsilon>\epsilon_c$ . Shift of the MB by lattice constant results in a striking switching effect at $\epsilon<\epsilon_c$. In the presence of the electric-field induced spin-orbit interaction (SOI), an obvious spin filtering occurs against the spin-unpolarized injection. Against the spin-polarized injection, on the other hand, the spin transport shows spin-flip (magnetization reversal) oscillations with respect to SOI. We study the dynamical response of a single semiflexible polymer chain based on the theory developed by Hallatschek et al. for the wormlike-chain model. The linear viscoelastic response under oscillatory forces acting at the two chain ends is derived analytically as a function of the oscillation frequency . We shall show that the real part of the complex compliance in the low frequency limit is consistent with the static result of Marko and Siggia whereas the imaginary part exhibits the power-law dependence +1/2. On the other hand, these compliances decrease as the power law -7/8 for the high frequency limit. These are different from those of the Rouse dynamics. We obtained the spectral function of the graphite H point using high resolution angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The extracted width of the spectral function (inverse of the photo-hole lifetime) near the H point is approximately proportional to the energy as expected from the linearly increasing density of states (DOS) near the Fermi energy. This is well accounted by our electron-phonon coupling theory considering the peculiar electronic DOS near the Fermi level. And we also investigated the temperature dependence of the peak widths both experimentally and theoretically. The upper bound for the electron-phonon coupling parameter is ~0.23, nearly the same value as previously reported at the K point. Our analysis of temperature dependent ARPES data at K shows that the energy of phonon mode of graphite has much higher energy scale than 125K which is dominant in electron-phonon coupling., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We study the electronic structures of two single layer superconducting cuprates, Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ (Tl2201) and (Bi$_{1.35}$Pb$_{0.85}$)(Sr$_{1.47}$La$_{0.38}$)CuO$_{6+\delta}$ (Bi2201) which have very different maximum critical temperatures (90K and 35K respectively) using Angular Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES). We are able to identify two main differences in their electronic properties. First, the shadow band that is present in double layer and low T$_{c,max}$ single layer cuprates is absent in Tl2201. Recent studies have linked the shadow band to structural distortions in the lattice and the absence of these in Tl2201 may be a contributing factor in its T$_{c,max}$.Second, Tl2201's Fermi surface (FS) contains long straight parallel regions near the anti-node, while in Bi2201 the anti-nodal region is much more rounded. Since the size of the superconducting gap is largest in the anti-nodal region, differences in the band dispersion at the anti-node may play a significant role in the pairing and therefore affect the maximum transition temperature., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures,1 table

The 24Mg(3He,t)24Al reaction has been studied at E(3He)=420 MeV. An energy resolution of 35 keV was achieved. Gamow-Teller strengths to discrete levels in 24Al are extracted by using a recently developed empirical relationship for the proportionality between Gamow-Teller strengths and differential cross sections at zero momentum transfer. Except for small discrepancies for a few weak excitations, good agreement with previous 24Mg(p,n) data and nuclear-structure calculations using the USDA/B interactions in the sd shell-model space is found. The excitation energy of several levels in 24Al of significance for determination of the 23Mg(p,gamma)24Al thermonuclear reaction rate were measured. Results are consistent with two of the three previous (3He,t) measurements, performed at much lower beam energies. However, a new state at Ex(24Al)=2.605(10) MeV was found and is the third state above the proton separation energy., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We obtained the spectral function of very high quality natural graphite single crystals using angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). A clear separation of non-bonding and bonding bands and asymmetric lineshape are observed. The asymmetric lineshapes are well accounted for by the finite photoelectron escape depth and the band structure. The extracted width of the spectral function (inverse of the photohole life time) near the K point is, beyond the maximum phonon energy, approximately proportional to the energy as expected from the linear density of states near the Fermi energy. The upper bound for the electron-phonon coupling constant is about 0.2, a much smaller value than the previously reported one., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Differential cross sections for transitions of known weak strength were measured with the (3He,t) reaction at 420 MeV on targets of 12C, 13C, 18O, 26Mg, 58Ni, 60Ni, 90Zr, 118Sn, 120Sn and 208Pb. Using this data, it is shown the proportionalities between strengths and cross sections for this probe follow simple trends as a function of mass number. These trends can be used to confidently determine Gamow-Teller strength distributions in nuclei for which the proportionality cannot be calibrated via beta-decay strengths. Although theoretical calculations in distorted-wave Born approximation overestimate the data, they allow one to understand the main experimental features and to predict deviations from the simple trends observed in some of the transitions., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We use microprobe Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (muARPES) to separately investigate the electronic properties of CuO2 planes and CuO chains in the high temperature superconductor, YBa2Cu4O8. In the CuO2 planes, a two dimensional (2D) electronic structure with nearly momentum independent bilayer splitting is observed. The splitting energy is 150 meV at (pi,0), almost 50% larger than in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+d) and the electron scattering at the Fermi level in the bonding band is about 1.5 times stronger than in the antibonding band. The CuO chains have a quasi one dimensional (1D) electronic structure. We observe two 1D bands separated by ~ 550meV: a conducting band and an insulating band with an energy gap of ~ 240meV. We find that the conduction electrons are well confined within the planes and chains with a non-trivial hybridization., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

KamLAND is a reactor neutrino oscillation experiment with a very long baseline. This experiment successfully measured oscillation phenomena of reactor antineutrinos coming mainly from 53 reactors in Japan. In order to extract the results, it is necessary to accurately calculate time-dependent antineutrino spectra from all the reactors. A simple model of reactor cores and code implementing it were developed for this purpose. We consider the problem of three body motion for a relativistic one-dimensional self-gravitating system. After describing the canonical decomposition of the action, we find an exact expression for the 3-body Hamiltonian, implicitly determined in terms of the four coordinate and momentum degrees of freedom in the system. Non-relativistically these degrees of freedom can be rewritten in terms of a single particle moving in a two-dimensional hexagonal well. We find the exact relativistic generalization of this potential, along with its post-Newtonian approximation. We then specialize to the equal mass case and numerically solve the equations of motion that follow from the Hamiltonian. Working in hexagonal-well coordinates, we obtaining orbits in both the hexagonal and 3-body representations of the system, and plot the Poincare sections as a function of the relativistic energy parameter $\eta $. We find two broad categories of periodic and quasi-periodic motions that we refer to as the annulus and pretzel patterns, as well as a set of chaotic motions that appear in the region of phase-space between these two types. Despite the high degree of non-linearity in the relativistic system, we find that the the global structure of its phase space remains qualitatively the same as its non-relativisitic counterpart for all values of $\eta $ that we could study. However the relativistic system has a weaker symmetry and so its Poincare section develops an asymmetric distortion that increases with increasing $\eta $. For the post-Newtonian system we find that it experiences a KAM breakdown for $\eta \simeq 0.26$: above which the near integrable regions degenerate into chaos., Comment: latex, 65 pages, 36 figures, high-resolution figures available upon request

We consider the 3-body problem in relativistic lineal gravity and obtain an exact expression for its Hamiltonian and equations of motion. While general-relativistic effects yield more tightly-bound orbits of higher frequency compared to their non-relativistic counterparts, as energy increases we find in the equal-mass case no evidence for either global chaos or a breakdown from regular to chaotic motion, despite the high degree of non-linearity in the system. A structural phase transition has been found using electron diffraction technique in PrRu4P12 accompanied by a metal - insulator (M - I) transition (TMI = 60K). Weak superlattice spots appeared at (H, K, L) (H + K + L = 2n + 1; n is an integer) position at a temperature of T = 12 K and 40 K. Above T = 70 K, the spots completely vanished. We extend the canonical formalism for the motion of $N$-particles in lineal gravity to include charges. Under suitable coordinate conditions and boundary conditions the determining equation of the Hamiltonian (a kind of transcendental equation) is derived from the matching conditions for the dilaton field at the particles' position. The canonical equations of motion are derived from this determining equation. For the equal mass case the canonical equations in terms of the proper time can be exactly solved in terms of hyperbolic and/or trigonometric functions. In electrodynamics with zero cosmological constant the trajectories for repulsive charges exhibit not only bounded motion but also a countably infinite series of unbounded motions for a fixed value of the total energy $H_{0}$, while for attractive charges the trajectories are simply periodic. When the cosmological constant $\Lambda$ is introduced, the motion for a given $\Lambda$ and $H_{0}$ is classified in terms of the charge-momentum diagram from which we can predict what type of the motion is realized for a given charge. Since in this theory the charge of each particle appears in the form $e_{1}e_{2}$ in the determining equation, the static balance condition in 1+1 dimensions turns out to be identical with the condition in Newtonian theory. We generalize this condition to non-zero momenta, obtaining the first exact solution to the static balance problem that does not obey the Majumdar-Papapetrou condition., Comment: Latex, 80 pages, 42 figures

We develop the canonical formalism for a system of $N$ bodies in lineal gravity and obtain exact solutions to the equations of motion for N=2. The determining equation of the Hamiltonian is derived in the form of a transcendental equation, which leads to the exact Hamiltonian to infinite order of the gravitational coupling constant. In the equal mass case explicit expressions of the trajectories of the particles are given as the functions of the proper time, which show characteristic features of the motion depending on the strength of gravity (mass) and the magnitude and sign of the cosmological constant. As expected, we find that a positive cosmological constant has a repulsive effect on the motion, while a negative one has an attractive effect. However, some surprising features emerge that are absent for vanishing cosmological constant. For a certain range of the negative cosmological constant the motion shows a double maximum behavior as a combined result of an induced momentum-dependent cosmological potential and the gravitational attraction between the particles. For a positive cosmological constant, not only bounded motions but also unbounded ones are realized.
