Abstract

Energy primarily comes from fossil fuels, which leads to environmental deterioration through increased carbon dioxide load and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Renewable energy is a cheap alternative, and biomass, like municipal solid wastes (MSWs), can be suitably used for energy production. This paper reviews the impact of variations in MSW composition on its physical, chemical, and lignocellulosic properties. It further illustrates how these properties affect torrefaction products. It was observed that MSW can refer to either a combination of different waste types or independent wastes; hence, there is no standard composition of MSW. The variations in composition are responsible for fluctuating physical, chemical, and lignocellulosic properties. These properties, along with torrefaction process parameters, simultaneously affect the torrefied product, whereas lignocellulosic properties influence the biochar yield, and physical and chemical properties impact calorific value and ash content. Torrefying MSW containing low moisture content yields biochar with a high calorific value. Methods to improve the lignocellulosic properties of MSW have not been studied. Research is needed to assess the possibility of improving biochar yields in MSW by enhancing lignin percentages, possibly through blending MSW. A guide on the best blend combinations and ratios is required. Also, it is crucial to study optimal torrefaction process parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

6. Design of Classroom Furniture for Use at Tertiary Institutions

Abstract

The design of classroom desktop-chairs (one size fits all) in many institutions is usually done with no consideration of ergonomics. Therefore, there is a mismatch between classroom desktop-chairs dimensions and students' anthropometric characteristics. This may cause musculoskeletal disorders and affect learning effectiveness due to sitting for a long time in an awkward position. Ergonomically designed furniture is known to reduce musculoskeletal disorders and improve the attentiveness of students in the classroom environment. This research, therefore, aimed to use the concept of ergonomics to design classroom desktop-chair for students in Uasin-Gishu County. Anthropometric data was collected from a total of three hundred and eighty-two (382) students of both genders. The selected tertiary institutions for the survey were Moi University (MU), University of Eldoret (UoE), Rift Valley Technical Training Institute (RVTTI) and The Eldoret National Polytechnic (TENP). Fourteen (14) anthropometric measurements were taken from students with the help of anthropometric tools. The research applied fundamental engineering principles of product design and was carried out in compliance with ISO 7250-1: (Basic human body measurements for technological design part 1: Body measurement definitions and landmarks). The data obtained was analysed using Minitab 17.0 statistical package, to get the mean, standard deviation, minimum, maximum, 5th, 50th and 95th percentiles. SolidWorks 2019, was used to design a desktop-chair. The analysed anthropometric data set was used to design, a suitable classroom desktop-chair. One type of ergonomically suitable classroom desktop-chair design was proposed to improve the match between classroom desktop-chairs dimensions and students' anthropometric characteristics. The analysed anthropometric data set can be used for the design of classroom desktop-chairs for students not only in the selected tertiary institutions but all over Kenya. Keywords: Muscu

Abstract

An investigation on the fraction of tire pyrolysis oil with a distillation range similar to that of automotive diesel (150–360°C) was carried out to determine its suitability as an alternative or supplement to diesel fuel. The quality of this oil was evaluated by comparing its key properties to the requirements for South African National Standards for Automotive diesel fuel (SANS-342) and also to conventional automotive diesel fuel. The viscosity, density, and copper strip corrosion of this fuel were found to be within the acceptable limits, while sulfur content and flush point were out of their respective set limit. In addition, mixing rule equations for predicting viscosity and density for both pure and blends of the oil as a function of temperature were developed and evaluated. The equations were found suitable due to their low absolute percentage deviation (APD).
