Abstract

The absence of global magnetic fields is often cited to explain why Mars lacks a dense atmosphere. This line of thought is based on a prevailing theory that magnetic fields can shield the atmosphere from solar wind erosion. However, we present observations here to demonstrate a counterintuitive understanding: unlike the global intrinsic magnetic field, the remnant crustal magnetic fields can enhance atmosphere loss when considering loss induced by plasma wave-particle interactions. An analysis of MAVEN data, combined with observation-based simulations, reveals that the bulk of O+ ions would be in resonance with ultra-low frequency (ULF) waves when the latter were present. This interaction then results in significant particle energization, thus enhancing ion escaping. A more detailed analysis attributes the occurrence of the resonance to the presence of Mars' crustal magnetic fields, which cause the majority of nearby ions to gyrate at a frequency matching the resonant condition ({\omega}-k_{\parallel} v_{\parallel}={\Omega}_i) of the waves. The ULF waves, fundamental drivers of this entire process, are excited and propelled by the upstream solar wind. Consequently, our findings offer a plausible explanation for the mysterious changes in Mars' climate, suggesting that the ancient solar wind imparted substantially more energy., Comment: 16 pages & 5 figures & Supplementary Material

Abstract

The dual-channel multi-mode 850 nm optical Miniature Transmitter (MTx) is developed for data transmission of the ATLAS LAr calorimeter readout at LHC. The MTx's are exposed to the radiation field of proton-proton collisions, therefore, the tolerance in Total Ionizing Dose (TID) is required. The TID effects in the MTx are investigated with X-rays and Co-60 gamma-rays for the active components of VCSEL diodes and the customized Link-on-Chip laser driver (LOCld) developed in 0.25 um Silicon-on-Sapphire CMOS technology. The irradiation tests were conducted at various dose rates. The responses to TID are observed with degradation of laser currents at initial dose of 10 to 100 Gy(SiO2), and partial recovery with additional TID to a stable output about 90 % of the original. The optical eye diagrams of irradiated samples show slightly increased jittering, and are suitable for the ATLAS requirement of 5 Gbps applications., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The upgrade of the CMS experiment for the high luminosity operation of the LHC comprises the replacement of the current endcap calorimeter by a high granularity sampling calorimeter (HGCAL). The electromagnetic section of the HGCAL is based on silicon sensors interspersed between lead and copper (or copper tungsten) absorbers. The hadronic section uses layers of stainless steel as an absorbing medium and silicon sensors as an active medium in the regions of high radiation exposure, and scintillator tiles directly readout by silicon photomultipliers in the remaining regions. As part of the development of the detector and its readout electronic components, a section of a silicon-based HGCAL prototype detector along with a section of the CALICE AHCAL prototype was exposed to muons, electrons and charged pions in beam test experiments at the H2 beamline at the CERN SPS in October 2018. The AHCAL uses the same technology as foreseen for the HGCAL but with much finer longitudinal segmentation. The performance of the calorimeters in terms of energy response and resolution, longitudinal and transverse shower profiles is studied using negatively charged pions, and is compared to GEANT4 predictions. Abstract

One month after launching Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM), a bright thermonuclear X-ray burst from 4U~0614+09, was observed on January 24, 2021. We report the time-resolved spectroscopy of the burst and a burst oscillation detection at 413 Hz with a fractional amplitude 3.4\% (rms). This coincides with the burst oscillation previously discovered with \textit{Swift}/BAT \citep{Strohmayer2008}, and therefore confirms the spin frequency of this source. This burst is the brightest one in the normal bursts (except the superburst) ever detected from 4U~0614+09, which leads to an upper limit of distance estimation as 3.1 kpc. The folded light curve during the burst oscillation shows a multi-peak structure, which is the first case observed during a single burst oscillation in nonpulsating sources. The multi-peak profile could be due to additional harmonics of the burst oscillation, which is corresponding to several brighter/fainter spots at the stellar surface.

Abstract

The Compact Muon Solenoid Collaboration is designing a new high-granularity endcap calorimeter, HGCAL, to be installed later this decade. As part of this development work, a prototype system was built, with an electromagnetic section consisting of 14 double-sided structures, providing 28 sampling layers. Each sampling layer has an hexagonal module, where a multipad large-area silicon sensor is glued between an electronics circuit board and a metal baseplate. The sensor pads of approximately 1 cm$^2$ are wire-bonded to the circuit board and are readout by custom integrated circuits. The prototype was extensively tested with beams at CERN's Super Proton Synchrotron in 2018. Based on the data collected with beams of positrons, with energies ranging from 20 to 300 GeV, measurements of the energy resolution and linearity, the position and angular resolutions, and the shower shapes are presented and compared to a detailed Geant4 simulation.

Abstract

Quantum phase transitions play an important role in shaping the phase diagram of high-temperature cuprate superconductors. These cuprates possess intertwined orders which interact strongly with superconductivity. However, the evidence for the quantum critical point associated with the charge order in the superconducting phase remains elusive. Here we show the short-range charge orders and the spectral signature of the quantum fluctuations in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) near the optimal doping using high-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. On performing calculations through a diagrammatic framework, we discovered that the charge correlations significantly soften several branches of phonons. These results elucidate the role of charge order in the LSCO compound, providing evidence for quantum critical scaling and discommensurations associated with charge order., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

As part of its HL-LHC upgrade program, the CMS Collaboration is developing a High Granularity Calorimeter (CE) to replace the existing endcap calorimeters. The CE is a sampling calorimeter with unprecedented transverse and longitudinal readout for both electromagnetic (CE-E) and hadronic (CE-H) compartments. The calorimeter will be built with $\sim$30,000 hexagonal silicon modules. Prototype modules have been constructed with 6-inch hexagonal silicon sensors with cell areas of 1.1~$cm^2$, and the SKIROC2-CMS readout ASIC. Beam tests of different sampling configurations were conducted with the prototype modules at DESY and CERN in 2017 and 2018. Abstract

The CMS experiment at the CERN LHC will be upgraded to accommodate the 5-fold increase in the instantaneous luminosity expected at the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). Concomitant with this increase will be an increase in the number of interactions in each bunch crossing and a significant increase in the total ionising dose and fluence. One part of this upgrade is the replacement of the current endcap calorimeters with a high granularity sampling calorimeter equipped with silicon sensors, designed to manage the high collision rates. As part of the development of this calorimeter, a series of beam tests have been conducted with different sampling configurations using prototype segmented silicon detectors. In the most recent of these tests, conducted in late 2018 at the CERN SPS, the performance of a prototype calorimeter equipped with ${\approx}12,000\rm{~channels}$ of silicon sensors was studied with beams of high-energy electrons, pions and muons. This paper describes the custom-built scalable data acquisition system that was built with readily available FPGA mezzanines and low-cost Raspberry PI computers.

Abstract

Precession is a unique motion in which the orientation of the rotational axis of a rotating body is not fixed but moving, and it generally exists in the Universe from giant stars through tiny atomic nuclei. In principle, the precession of an atomic nuclide can be approximately described as wobbling motion, arising from the coupling of a rotation and a harmonic vibration. Recently, a number of wobbling bands were reported at low spin, which violate the wobbling approximation that can be valid only at high spin. Here we explore the nature of the reported low-spin wobbling bands. Via a new experiment, we demonstrate that one such band in $^{187}$Au is generated by dominant single-particle excitation rather than by the excitation of a wobbling phonon. We point out that the imperfect research paradigm used previously would lead to unreliable identification of low-spin wobbling bands. Consequently, new experimental approaches should be developed to distinguish among the different excitation mechanisms that can give rise to the observed low-spin bands in odd-even nuclei.

Abstract

The ATLAS phase-I upgrade aims to enhance event trigger performance in the Liquid Argon (LAr) calorimeter and the forward muon spectrometer. The trigger signals are transmitted by optical transceivers at 5.12 Gbps per channel in a radiation field. We report the design, quality control in production and ageing test of the transceivers fabricated with the LOCld laser driver and multi-mode 850 nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). The modules are packaged in miniature formats of dual-channel transmitter (MTx) and transceiver (MTRx) for the LAr. The transmitters are also packaged in small form-factor pluggable (SFP) for the muon spectrometer. In production, the LOCld chips and VCSELs in TOSA package were examined before assembly. All of the modules were tested and selected during production for quality control based on the eye-diagram parameters measured at 5.12 Gbps. The yield is 98 % for both the MTx and MTRx on a total 4.7k modules. The uniformity of transmitter channels of a MTx was assured by choosing the TOSA components with approximately equal light powers. The ageing effect is monitored in burn-in of a small batch of transmitter modules with bit-error test and eye-diagrams measured periodically. Abstract

The superconductivity of cuprates, which has been a mystery ever since its discovery decades ago, is created through doping electrons or holes into a Mott insulator. There, however, exists an inherent electron-hole asymmetry in cuprates. The layered crystal structures of cuprates enable collective charge excitations fundamentally different from those of three-dimensional metals, i.e., acoustic plasmons. Acoustic plasmons have been recently observed in electron-doped cuprates by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS); in contrast, there is no evidence for acoustic plasmons in hole-doped cuprates, despite extensive measurements. This contrast led us to investigate whether the doped holes in cuprates La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ are conducting carriers or are too incoherent to induce collective charge excitation. Here we present momentum-resolved RIXS measurements and calculations of collective charge response via the loss function to reconcile the aforementioned issues. Our results provide unprecedented spectroscopic evidence for the acoustic plasmons and long sought conducting p holes in hole-doped cuprates.

Abstract

We report on the development of a high-resolution and highly efficient beamline for soft-X-ray resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) located at Taiwan Photon Source. This beamline adopts an optical design that uses an active grating monochromator (AGM) and an active grating spectrometer (AGS) to implement the energy compensation principle of grating dispersion. Active gratings are utilized to diminish defocus, coma and higher-order aberrations as well as to decrease the slope errors caused by thermal deformation and optical polishing. The AGS is mounted on a rotatable granite platform to enable momentum-resolved RIXS measurements with scattering angle over a wide range. Several high-precision instruments developed in house for this beamline are briefly described. The best energy resolution obtained from this AGM-AGS beamline was 12.4 meV at 530 eV, achieving a resolving power 42,000, while the bandwidth of the incident soft X-rays was kept at 0.5 eV. To demonstrate the scientific impacts of high-resolution RIXS, we present an example of momentum-resolved RIXS measurements on a high-temperature superconducting cuprate, La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. The measurements reveal the A$_{1g}$ apical oxygen phonons in superconducting cuprates, opening a new opportunity to investigate the coupling between these phonons and charge density waves., Comment: 9 pages, p figures, submitted to J. of Synchrotron Radiation. Abstract

Magnetic topological quantum materials (TQMs) provide a fertile ground for the emergence of fascinating topological magneto-electric effects. Recently, the discovery of intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator MnBi2Te4 that could realize quantized anomalous Hall effect and axion insulator phase ignited intensive study on this family of TQM compounds. Here, we investigated the AFM compound MnBi4Te7 where Bi2Te3 and MnBi2Te4 layers alternate to form a superlattice. Using spatial- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we identified ubiquitous (albeit termination dependent) topological electronic structures from both Bi2Te3 and MnBi2Te4 terminations. Unexpectedly, while the bulk bands show strong temperature dependence correlated with the AFM transition, the topological surface states show little temperature dependence and remain gapless across the AFM transition. The detailed electronic structure of MnBi4Te7 and its temperature evolution, together with the results of its sister compound MnBi2Te4, will not only help understand the exotic properties of this family of magnetic TQMs, but also guide the design for possible applications., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

Topological quantum materials coupled with magnetism can provide a platform for realizing rich exotic physical phenomena, including quantum anomalous Hall effect, axion electrodynamics and Majorana fermions. However, these unusual effects typically require extreme experimental conditions such as ultralow temperature or sophisticate material growth and fabrication. Recently, new intrinsic magnetic topological insulators were proposed in MnBi2Te4-family compounds - on which rich topological effects could be realized under much relaxed experimental conditions. However, despite the exciting progresses, the detailed electronic structures observed in this family of compounds remain controversial up to date. Here, combining the use of synchrotron and laser light sources, we carried out comprehensive and high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies on MnBi2Te4, and clearly identified its topological electronic structures including the characteristic gapless topological surface states. In addition, the temperature evolution of the energy bands clearly reveals their interplay with the magnetic phase transition by showing interesting differences for the bulk and surface states, respectively. The identification of the detailed electronic structures of MnBi2Te4 will not only help understand its exotic properties, but also pave the way for the design and realization of novel phenomena and applications., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure

Abstract

In situ particle observations provide useful information for determining the significance of nonlinearity in wave‐particle interactions. Here, we examine an electromagnetic Landau resonance event observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission near the dayside magnetopause along this line of thought. During this event, protons with energy ∼ ${\sim} $748 eV and pitch angle ∼25° ${\sim} 25{}^{\circ}$ are observed to resonate with electromagnetic‐ion‐cyclotron waves. Detailed data analysis reveals the existence of a second harmonic signal in proton modulation. Using an observation‐based test particle simulation, this signal is explained as a low‐resolution manifestation of phase space rolled‐up structures, which themselves are not observable due to limited instrument resolution. The presence of these rolled‐up structures suggests that the waves induce significant displacement of the protons in phase space, consequently confirming the nonlinear nature of the observed interaction. Based on the observations, we further discuss the possibility of the nonlinear electromagnetic Landau resonance generating second harmonic waves. Plain Language Summary: The nonlinearity of wave‐particle interactions becomes nonnegligible when wave‐induced phase space displacement of particles is comparable with that caused by the background fields. Nonlinear interactions differ from their linear counterparts in several aspects, including the area of phase space involved in resonance, particle energization efficiency, and the interactions' asymptotic state. This study investigates the nonlinear nature of an electromagnetic Landau resonance event between electromagnetic‐ion‐cyclotron waves and protons observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission. Further investigation shows the existence of a second harmonic signal in proton modulation. 33. Property Analysis of Laser Welded Dissimilar Q345D/20Mn2 Steel Joints.

Abstract

A fibre laser was used to weld Q345D/20Mn2 dissimilar steel with and without a Ni60 powder filler. Finite element (FE) simulation of the temperature and stress fields in the laser beam welding (LBW) was conducted COMSOL. Experimental investigation determined the effect of Ni-based powder filled welding on the microstructure, morphology, element content, microhardness and fracture morphology of the weld cross-section. The results show that when the laser power was 2700 W, the scanning speed was 1 mm/s and the out-of-focus amount was 0 mm, the tensile properties of Q345D/20Mn2 steel welds were optimal and deformation was minimal. Under such conditions the depth of the weld pool can reach 2.7 mm and the width 2.8 mm. After the Ni-based powder melts and penetrates the bottom of the base material (BM) along the weld seam, small cytosolic, equiaxed and columnar crystal grains can be observed near the fusion line, and the Ni-based filler powder can achieve a good metallurgical bond with the BM. The location of tensile fracture is at the weld and small tough nests can be observed in the cross-section leading to judgment that the fracture mode is ductile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

34. Achieving Maximum Performance of a Laser Clad Ni-based Coating Through Optimization of Laser Remelting Processing Parameters.

Abstract

Through simulation based on the Workbench platform in ANSYS the optimal laser remelting process parameters were identified to achieve the maximum performance of a Ni60 coating laser clad onto a H13 steel surface. Laser remelting with a fibre laser was conducted according to the optimal process parameters obtained and the coating morphology, microstructure and microhardness after remelting were analysed. The results show that when the laser power was 1200 W and the scanning speed was 4 mm/s the remelted coating has the smallest residual stress value, pores in the coating were basically eliminated, the organization was dense, the hardness improved and the coating quality was the best. When the laser power was 900 W and the scanning speed was 2 mm/s the maximum residual stress value of the remelted coating was slightly smaller than that of the un-remelted coating, the coating morphology quality was better, and there were very few bubbles. 35. Optimizing the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of a Laser Clad Ti-6Al-4V Coating by Laser Shock Peening (LSP).

Abstract

In view of the difficulties such as coarse microstructure, performance degradation and excessive residual stress during the preparation of Ti-6Al-4V layers by laser cladding, the microstructure and mechanical properties of such a Ti-6Al-4V coating were optimized and improved based on the plastic deformation effect caused by laser shock peening (LSP). The characteristics of phase composition, changes in microstructure and morphology, grain plastic deformation and the influence of mechanical properties of the laser clad Ti-6Al-4V coating were studied pre- and post-LSP. The results indicate that the α/α' phase content increases and the β phase content decreases after LSP. The β phase and acicular martensite α' phase is refined significantly and divided, and the basket structure presents a more dense and staggered distribution after LSP. Laser cladding causes the grains in the Ti-6Al-4V coating to undergo plastic strain and the degree of grain refinement was significantly improved following LSP. The microhardness at the top of the laser clad Ti-6Al-4V coating increases from 23 to 30% compared after LSP. At the same time, the LSP promotes the transformation of residual tensile stress to compressive stress on the surface of the laser clad Ti-6Al-4V coating, with an average residual compressive stress value of about 339 MPa. Abstract

Exact expressions are obtained for a diversity of propagating patterns for a derivative nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with a quintic nonlinearity. These patterns include bright pulses, fronts and dark solitons. The evolution of the wave envelope is determined via a pair of integrals of motion, and reduction is achieved to Jacobi elliptic cn and dn function representations. Numerical simulations are performed to establish the existence of parameter ranges for stability. The derivative quintic nonlinear Schr\"odinger model equations investigated here are important in the analysis of strong optical signals propagating in spatial or temporal waveguides., Comment: J. Abstract

Previous studies of the modulation instability (MI) of continuous waves (CWs) in a two-core fiber (TCF) did not consider effects caused by co-propagation of the two polarized modes in a TCF that possesses birefringence, such as cross-phase modulation (XPM), polarization-mode dispersion (PMD), and polarization-dependent coupling (PDC) between the cores. This paper reports an analysis of these effects on the MI by considering a linear-birefringence TCF and a circular-birefringence TCF, which feature different XPM coefficients. The analysis focuses on the MI of the asymmetric CW states in the TCFs, which have no counterparts in single-core fibers. We find that, the asymmetric CW state exists when its total power exceeds a threshold (minimum) value, which is sensitive to the value of the XPM coefficient. We consider, in particular, a class of asymmetric CW states that admit analytical solutions. In the anomalous dispersion regime, without taking the PMD and PDC into account, the MI gain spectra of the birefringent TCF, if scaled by the threshold power, are almost identical to those of the zero-birefringence TCF. However, in the normal dispersion regime, the power-scaled MI gain spectra of the birefringent TCFs are distinctly different from their zero-birefringence counterparts, and the difference is particularly significant for the circular-birefringence TCF, which takes a larger XPM coefficient. On the other hand, the PMD and PDC only exert weak effects on the MI gain spectra. Abstract

We present a detailed x-ray diffraction study of the strain in InAs/GaSb superlattices grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The superlattices were grown with either InSb or GaAs interfaces. We show that the superlattice morphology, either planar or nanostructured, is dependent on the chemical bonds at the heterointerfaces. In both cases, the misfit strain has been determined for the superlattice layers and the interfaces. We also determined how the magnitude and sign of this strain is crucial in governing the morphology of the superlattice. Our analysis suggests that the growth of self-assembled nanostructures may be extended to many systems generally thought to have too small a lattice mismatch., Comment: 40 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables.
