1. 3-loop Feynman Integral Extrapolations for the Baseball Diagram

Abstract

We focus on numerical techniques for expanding 3-loop Feynman integrals with respect to the dimensional regularization parameter $\varepsilon,$ which is related to the space-time dimension as $\nu = 4-2\varepsilon,$ and describes underlying UV singularities located at the boundaries of the integration domain. As a function of the squared momentum $s,$ the expansion coefficients exhibit thresholds that generally delineate regions for their computational techniques. For the problem at hand, a sequence of integrations with a linear extrapolation as $\varepsilon\rightarrow 0$ may be performed to determine leading coefficients of the $\varepsilon$-expansion numerically. For the "baseball" Feynman diagram, we have used extrapolation with respect to an additional parameter to improve the accuracy of the $\varepsilon$-expansion coefficients in case of singularities internal to the domain., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings submission to ACAT 2024

Abstract

We conducted measurements of $K^- + {^3{\rm He}} \to \pi \!Y \!N + N'$ reactions using a $1~{\rm GeV}/c$ $K^-$-beam, with the objective of understanding the broad decay width of $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ (approximately twice as broad as that of $\Lambda(1405)$ considered to be the $\bar{K} \!N$ quasi-bound state). We successfully reproduced distributions of the $\pi \! Y \! N$ invariant mass and momentum transfer for $\pi \! Y \! N$ using model fitting functions for $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ formation and quasi-free $\bar{K}$ absorption (${\rm QF}_{\bar{K}-{\rm abs}}$) processes. The model can describe the experimental data quite well, and four $\bar{K} \! N \! N \to \pi \! Y \! N $ cross-sections were obtained. The results indicate that mesonic decay is the dominant decay branch of $\bar{K} \! N \! N$. The results also suggest that $\Gamma_{\pi \Lambda N} \sim \Gamma_{\pi \Sigma N}$, which indicates that the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=1$ absorption channel, in addition to the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=0$ absorption channel, substantially contribute to the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ decay, making the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ state approximately twice as unstable as $\Lambda$(1405).

Abstract

Increasing accuracy of the theory and experiment of the $n$$=$$2$ $^3$P fine structure of helium has allowed for increasingly-precise tests of quantum electrodynamics (QED), determinations of the fine-structure constant $\alpha$, and limitations on possible beyond-the-Standard-Model physics. Here we present a 2~part-per-billion (ppb) measurement of the $J$$=$$1$-to-$J$$=$$0$ interval. The measurement is performed using frequency-offset separated-oscillatory-fields. Our result of $29\,616\,955\,018(60)$~Hz represents a landmark for helium fine-structure measurements, and, for the first time, will allow for a 1-ppb determination of the fine-structure constant when QED theory for the interval is improved., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1807.07923

Abstract

We measured a set of $\pi^\pm\Sigma^\mp$, $\pi^0\Sigma^0$, and $\pi^-\Sigma^0$ invariant mass spectra below and above the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold in $K^-$-induced reactions on deuteron. We deduced the $S$-wave $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\pi\Sigma$ and $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a $\bar{K}N$ and $\pi\Sigma$ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to $\Lambda(1405)$ is located at 1417.7$^{+6.0}_{-7.4}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$(systematic errors) + $[-26.1^{+6.0}_{-7.9}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.7}_{-2.0}$(systematic errors)]$i$ MeV/$c^2$, closer to the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

$\bar K$-nuclear bound systems, kaonic nuclei, have been widely discussed as products of the strongly attractive $\bar K N$ interaction in $I = 0$ channels. Recently, we demonstrated that kaonic nuclei can be produced via in-flight $(K^-,N)$ reactions using the low-momentum DC kaon beam at the J-PARC E15 experiment. We observed the simplest kaonic nuclei, $K^-pp$, having a much deeper binding energy than normal nuclei. For further studies, we have proposed a series of experimental programs for the systematic investigation of light kaonic nuclei, from $\bar K N$ ($\Lambda(1405)$) to $\bar K NNNN$. Although lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is the most frequently operated on spinal disease, the causal relationship between LSS and development of sleep disorders remains unclear due to lack of longitudinal studies. This study aimed to determine whether LSS was a risk factor for developing new sleep disorders, primarily insomnia, using a prospective cohort of community residents.Patients and Methods: This study was a prospective cohort study. Participants aged ≥ 65 years from the “Locomotive Syndrome and Health Outcomes in Aizu Cohort Study (LOHAS)” conducted in 2008 formed our study population. LSS was diagnosed using the self-administered, self-reported history questionnaire, a validated diagnostic support tool for LSS. Sleep disorder was investigated using a questionnaire during the 2-year follow-up. The impact of LSS on sleep disorder onset was analyzed after adjusting for potential confounders, such as age, sex, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, depression, and smoking habits, using propensity score matching.Results: Of the 489 participants who were followed up for two years, 38 (7.8%) had newly developed a sleep disorder in 2010. After adjusting for confounding factors, a comparison of 133 participants each in the control and LSS groups showed significantly higher frequency of new-onset sleep disorders (19 [14.3%] in the LSS group versus 6 [4.5%] in the control group).Conclusion: LSS was found to be an independent risk factor for sleep disorders.Keywords: lumbar spinal stenosis, sleep disorder, insomnia, cohort study, musculoskeletal disorder, locomotive syndrome

Abstract

We have performed an exclusive measurement of the $K^{-}+\! ~^{3}{\rm He} \to \Lambda pn$ reaction at an incident kaon momentum of $1\ {\rm GeV}/c$.In the $\Lambda p$ invariant mass spectrum, a clear peak was observed below the mass threshold of $\bar{K}\!+\!N\!+\!N$, as a signal of the kaonic nuclear bound state, $\bar{K}NN$.The binding energy, decay width, and $S$-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor of this state were observed to be $B_{K} = 42\pm3({\rm stat.})^{+3}_{-4}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}$, $\Gamma_{K} = 100\pm7({\rm stat.})^{+19}_{-9}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}$, and $Q_{K} = 383\pm11({\rm stat.})^{+4}_{-1}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}/c$, respectively. The total production cross-section of $\bar{K}NN$, determined by its $\Lambda p$ decay mode, was $\sigma^{tot}_{K} \cdot BR_{\Lambda p} = 9.3\pm0.8({\rm stat.})^{+1.4}_{-1.0}({\rm syst.})\ \mu{\rm b}$.We estimated the branching ratio of the $\bar{K}NN$ state to the $\Lambda p$ and $\Sigma^{0}p$ decay modes as $BR_{\Lambda p}/BR_{\Sigma^{0}p} \sim 1.7$, by assuming that the physical processes leading to the $\Sigma N\!N$ final states are analogous to those of $\Lambda pn$., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

We investigate neutralization processes (especially thermal surface neutralization), which are required for the magneto-optical trapping of radioactive atoms. A variety of neutralization methods are first summarized: neutral beam injection for fusion reactors, neutral atom implantation in semiconductor processing, and the production of radioactive neutral atoms in accelerators. We focus on thermal surface neutralization, which produces neutral atoms in the thermal energy range for laser cooling. The experiments were carried out with yttrium, gadolinium, and zirconium foils to neutralize francium and rubidium ions for magneto-optical trapping. The results reconfirm that yttrium foil is a good neutralizer (i.e., it has a neutral release efficiency $>65\%$). In addition, the release fraction when using yttrium foil exceeds 75\% at 1350 K, which is greater than the release fraction for the other foils. This reconfirmation is important because few previous studies have focused on thermal surface neutralization. Moreover, the results show that the neutralization efficiency is strongly influenced by the experimental process itself.

Abstract

We investigate how the Coulomb interaction affects the energy $E$ and width $\Gamma$ of resonance states in mirror nuclei. We employ a three-cluster microscopic model to determine position of resonance states in two- and three-body continua. Two parameters are introduced to quantify effects of the Coulomb interactions. As the energy and width of the corresponding resonance states of mirror nuclei are displayed on an $E$-$\Gamma$ plane, these parameters determine a rotation and a dilatation. With the help of these parameters we found resonance states with strong, small and medium effects of the Coulomb interaction. We also found two different scenarios of the motion of resonance states due to the Coulomb interaction. The first standard (major) scenario represent resonance states with the larger energy and larger width than their counterparts have. There are two main histological subtypes: esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and esophageal adenocarcinoma. ESCC is the predominant histological type of esophageal cancer worldwide and has worse prognosis than esophageal adenocarcinoma. However, effective treatment for patients with ESCC remains limited. Moreover, the risk of recurrence remains high in patients with resectable ESCC even with perioperative multidisciplinary treatment, such as chemoradiotherapy or chemotherapy. Nivolumab, a human monoclonal immunoglobulin G4 antibody that inhibits programmed cell death protein 1, has recently been identified as a potential treatment for patients with metastatic esophageal cancer based on the results of the ATTRACTION-3 and CheckMate 648 trials. The CheckMate 577 trial showed survival benefits of postoperative nivolumab monotherapy compared with placebo in patients with resectable locally advanced esophageal cancer who did not achieve a pathological complete response after preoperative chemoradiotherapy. Abstract

For decades, improved theory and experiment of the $n=2$ $^3$P fine structure of helium have allowed for increasingly-precise tests of quantum electrodynamics, determinations of the fine-structure constant $\alpha$, and limitations on possible beyond-the-Standard-Model physics. Here we use the new frequency-offset separated-oscillatory-fields (FOSOF) technique to measure the $2^3$P$_2\!\!\to\!2^3$P$_1$ interval. Our result of $2\,291\,176\,590(25)$~Hz represents a major step forward in precision for helium fine-structure measurements.

23. Systematic investigation of the Hoyle-analog states in light nuclei

Abstract

We investigate resonance states in three-cluster continuum of some light nuclei $^{9}$Be, $^{9}$B, $^{10}$B, $^{11}$B and $^{11}$C. These nuclei are considered to have a three-cluster configuration consisting of two alpha-particles and neutron, proton, deuteron, triton and nucleus $^{3}$He. In this study, we make use two different microscopic three-cluster models. The first model employs the Hyperspherical Harmonics basis to numerate channels and describe three-cluster continuum. The second model is the well-known complex scaling method. The nucleon-nucleon interaction is modeled by the semi-realistic Minnesota and Hasegawa-Nagata potentials. Our main aim is to find the Hoyle-analog states in these nuclei or, in other words, whether it is possible to synthesize these nuclei in a triple collision of clusters. We formulate the criteria for selecting such states and apply them to resonance states, emerged from our calculations. We found that there are resonance states obeying the formulated criteria which make possible syntheses of these nuclei in a stellar environment., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract

We observed a distinct peak in the $\Lambda p$ invariant mass spectrum of $^{3}{\rm He}(K^-, \, \Lambda p)n$, well below the mass threshold of $m_K + 2 m_p$. By selecting a relatively large momentum-transfer region $q = 350 \sim 650$ MeV/$c$, one can clearly separate the peak from the quasi-free process, $\overline{K}N \rightarrow \overline{K}N$ followed by the non-resonant absorption by the two spectator-nucleons $\overline{K}NN \rightarrow \Lambda N $. We found that the simplest fit to the observed peak gives us a Breit-Wigner pole position at $B_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 47 \pm 3 \, (stat.) \,^{+3}_{-6} \,(sys.)$ MeV having a width $\Gamma_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 115 \pm 7 \, (stat.) \,^{+10}_{-9} \,(sys.)$ MeV, and the $S$-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor parameter $Q_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 381 \pm 14 \, (stat.)\,^{+57}_{-0} \,(sys.)$ MeV/$c$, as a new form of the nuclear bound system with strangeness -- "$K^-pp$"., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Infection is generally considered to be self-limiting and non-critical. Chikungunya infection may be diagnosed by severe joint pain with fever, but it is difficult to diagnose because the symptoms of chikungunya are common to many pathogens, including dengue fever. Diagnosis mainly depends on viral culture, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and IgM ELISA. Early and accurate diagnosis of the virus can be achieved by the application of PCR methods, but the high cost and the need for a thermal cycler restrict the use of such methods. On the other hand, antibody-based IgM ELISA is considered to be inexpensive, but antibodies against chikungunya virus (CHIKV) only develop after 4 days of infection, so it has limited application in the earlier diagnosis of viral infection and the management of patients. Because of these challenges, a simple antigen-based sensitive, specific, and rapid detection method is required for the early and accurate clinical diagnosis of chikungunya.Methods: The amino acid sequence of CHIKV ectodomain E1 and E2 proteins was analyzed using bioinformatics tools to determine the antigenic residues, particularly the B-cell epitopes and their characteristics. Recombinant E2-E1 CHIKV antigen was used for the development of polyclonal antibodies in hamsters and IgG was purified. Serological tests of 96 CHIKV patients were conducted by antigen-capture ELISA using primary antibodies raised against rCHIKV E2-E1 in hamsters and human anti-CHIKV antibodies.Results: We observed high specificity and sensitivity, of 100% and 95.8%, respectively, and these values demonstrate the efficiency of the test as a clinical diagnostic tool. Patients were recruited if they had received anti-VEGF agents for BRVO-ME treatment and included 30 patients (30 eyes) without glaucoma (G[-] group) and 27 patients (27 eyes) with glaucoma (G[+] group). The central retinal thickness (CRT) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 3 months after a single injection of anti-VEGF agents were compared between the two groups.Results: Before treatment, the mean±standard deviation of the CRT was 514.2± 117.3 μm for the G[-] group, which was not significantly different from that for the G[+] group (533.4± 171.4 μm). The CRT in the G[-] and G[+] groups significantly reduced to 321.1± 114.6 μm and 347.8± 134.7 μm, respectively, at 1 month after the injection and to 360.4± 159.5 μm and 352.4± 151.9 μm, respectively, at 3 months after the injection (P< 0.01 for each group). The difference in the degree of CRT reduction between the two groups was not significant. Before treatment, the BCVA was 0.42± 0.32 logMAR units in the G[-] group and 0.57± 0.33 logMAR units in the G[+] group, showing no significant difference. The BCVA in the G[-] and G[+] groups improved significantly to 0.27± 0.26 logMAR units and 0.34± 0.42 logMAR units, respectively, at 1 month, and to 0.18± 0.20 logMAR units and 0.39± 0.34 logMAR units, respectively, at 3 months (P< 0.01). Abstract

The correlation between magnetic properties and microscopic structural aspects in the diluted magnetic semiconductor Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Te is investigated by x-ray diffraction and magnetization as a function of the Mn concentration $x$. The occurrence of high ferromagnetic-transition temperatures in the rhombohedrally distorted phase of slowly-cooled Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Te is shown to be directly correlated with the formation and coexistence of strongly-distorted Mn-poor and weakly-distorted Mn-rich regions. It is demonstrated that the weakly-distorted phase fraction is responsible for the occurrence of high-transition temperatures in Ge$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$Te. When the Mn concentration becomes larger, the Mn-rich regions start to switch into the undistorted cubic structure, and the transition temperature is suppressed concurrently. By identifying suitable annealing conditions, we successfully increased the transition temperature to above 200 K for Mn concentrations close to the cubic phase. Structural data indicate that the weakly-distorted phase fraction can be restored at the expense of the cubic regions upon the enhancement of the transition temperature, clearly establishing the direct link between high-transition temperatures and the weakly-distorted Mn-rich phase fraction., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Subjects received peficitinib 50, 100 or 150 mg as a single dose on Day 1 (fasted) and once daily from Days 8 to 13 in the multiple-dose period (fed). Blood samples were collected before administration each day, and up to 72h post administration. Pharmacokinetic assessments included area under the concentration curve (AUC), half-life (t1/2), maximum concentration (Cmax), and time to maximum concentration (tmax) of peficitinib and its metabolites (H1, H2 and H4). Treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were evaluated.Results: Thirty-six subjects were enrolled (12 per dose group). After a single dose of peficitinib, median tmax was 1.0– 1.5h and mean t1/2 was 7.4– 13.0h for all doses. In the multiple-dose period, median tmax was 1.5– 2.0h. Dose-proportional increases in Cmax and AUC24h were observed for peficitinib and its metabolites following single and multiple doses, with minimal drug accumulation. The major metabolite was H2, with a systemic exposure of > 150% of the parent AUC. Drug-related TEAEs were experienced by 5 (13.9%) and 12 (33.3%) subjects in the single- and multiple-dose periods, respectively. Following multiple doses of peficitinib, TEAEs were more frequent in higher than lower dose groups but were mild in severity with no related discontinuation or death.Conclusion: Following single and multiple doses of peficitinib in healthy Chinese subjects, peficitinib demonstrated rapid absorption and was well tolerated at all doses.Clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT04143477.Keywords: rheumatoid arthritis, treatment, dose-proportionality, tsDMARDs

We have found the possible region of parameters of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) within the bounds from the experimental results of the Higgs mass, the rare decay mode of $b$-quark, the muon $g-2$, the dark matter abundance, and the direct searches for the lighter stop (i.e., one of the supersymmetric partners of top quark) at the LHC. Abstract

We give numerical integration results for Feynman loop diagrams such as those covered by Laporta [1] and by Baikov and Chetyrkin [2], and which may give rise to loop integrals with UV singularities. We explore automatic adaptive integration using multivariate techniques from the PARINT package for multivariate integration, as well as iterated in- tegration with programs from the QUADPACK package, and a trapezoidal method based on a double exponential trans- formation. PARINT is layered over MPI (Message Passing Interface), and incorporates advanced parallel/distributed techniques including load balancing among processes that may be distributed over a cluster or a network/grid of nodes. Results are included for 2-loop vertex and box diagrams and for sets of 2-, 3- and 4-loop self-energy diagrams with or without UV terms. Abstract

The multichannel Efimov physics is investigated in ultracold heteronuclear admixtures of K and Rb atoms. We observe a shift in the scattering length where the first atom-dimer resonance appears in the $^{41}$K-$^{87}$Rb system relative to the position of the previously observed atom-dimer resonance in the $^{40}$K-$^{87}$Rb system. This shift is well explained by our calculations with a three-body model including the van der Waals interactions, and, more importantly, the multichannel spinor physics. With only minor difference in the atomic masses of the admixtures, the shift in the atom-dimer resonance positions can be cleanly ascribed to the isolated and overlapping Feshbach resonances in the $^{40}$K-$^{87}$Rb and $^{41}$K-$^{87}$Rb systems, respectively. Abstract

Cross-control of a material property - manipulation of a physical quantity (e.g., magnetisation) by a nonconjugate field (e.g., electrical field) - is a challenge in fundamental science and also important for technological device applications. It has been demonstrated that magnetic properties can be controlled by electrical and optical stimuli in various magnets. Here we find that heat-treatment allows the control over two competing magnetic phases in the Mn-doped polar semiconductor GeTe. The onset temperatures $T_{\rm c}$ of ferromagnetism vary at low Mn concentrations by a factor of five to six with a maximum $T_{\rm c} \approx 180$ K, depending on the selected phase. Analyses in terms of synchrotron x-ray diffraction and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy indicate a possible segregation of the Mn ions, which is responsible for the high-$T_{\rm c}$ phase. More importantly, we demonstrate that the two states can be switched back and forth repeatedly from either phase by changing the heat-treatment of a sample, thereby confirming magnetic phase-change- memory functionality., Comment: 18 pages (preprint style), 5 figures

Abstract

We demonstrated a frequency offset locking between two laser sources using a waveguide-type electro-optic modulator (EOM) with 10th-order sidebands for magneto-optical trapping of Fr atoms. The frequency locking error signal was successfully obtained by performing delayed self-homodyne detection of the beat signal between the repumping frequency and the 10th-order sideband component of the trapping light. Sweeping the trapping-light and repumping-light frequencies with keeping its frequency difference of 46 GHz was confirmed over 1 GHz by monitoring the Doppler absorption profile of I2. No screening method has yet been established. Grip strength is commonly used in primary care settings to evaluate disease activity and diagnose sarcopenia. This single-center, cross-sectional study aimed to determine the diagnostic accuracy of grip strength for cervical myelopathy (DCM) and cutoff values for primary care DCM screening using area under the curve (AUC) and sensitivity values.Patients and Methods: The DCM group comprised 249 consecutive participants (165 males, 84 females; mean age, 65.1 years) with DCM who had undergone surgery at the affiliated hospital. The control group comprised 735 (280 males, 455 females; mean age, 65.8 years) participants undertaking a local government health checkup. Stratifying by age and sex, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were constructed for each group using minimum grip strength values for both hands. Based on ROC analysis, cut-off values were established so that the screening sensitivity would be 90% for either sex or age group, respectively.Results: According to age group and sex (males/females [M/F]), AUC values for a diagnosis of DCM in M/F were as follows: 40– 59 years, 0.92/0.87; 60– 69 years, 0.94/0.89; 70– 79 years, 0.89/0.91; and 80– 89 years, 0.97/0.97. Calculated M/F cutoff values were 41/24.5, 27/16, 27/15, and 20/10 kg, which were similar to cutoff scores for sarcopenia in M/F patients aged 60– 69 and 70– 79 years. M/F sensitivities in each age groups were 0.94/0.91, 0.92/0.90, 0.95/0.96, and 0.92/0.93. M/F specificities were 0.62/0.59, 0.84/0.83, 0.61/0.71, and 0.83/0.88.Conclusion: Grip strength had moderate-to-high diagnostic accuracy for DCM between participants in the control and DCM groups. We developed easily applicable cutoff values for primary care DCM screening with ≥ 90% sensitivity. Three patients with inflamed conjunctival nevus were examined by slit-lamp biomicroscopy, and the findings before and after the treatments were compared.Results: All three patients had a slightly pigmented and edematous conjunctival tumor at the corneal limbal area. The tumors were hyperemic, and papillae and follicles were present on the superior conjunctiva in all patients. All of the patients had an allergic predisposition. The antiallergic treatment not only resolved the hyperemia and edema of the palpebral conjunctiva, but also reduced the tumor size. In one case, the topical antiallergic agent alone led to a reduction of the tumor size. A combination of topical antiallergic agent and topical immunosuppressant was effective in reducing the tumor size and degree of pigmentation in the other two patients.Conclusion: The hyperemia and pigmentation in eyes with inflamed conjunctival nevus can be resolved by topical antiallergic agent and topical immunosuppressant without resection of the tumor.Keywords: inflamed juvenile conjunctival nevus, epinastine, tacrolimus

This study reviewed the clinical features and visual outcomes of these patients and investigated the background of the prescription of topical corticosteroids.Patients and Methods: The medical records of patients who visited the Cornea Service at Fujita Health University Bantane Hospital and were treated for infectious keratitis from April 2016 to March 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients treated with topical corticosteroids before a culture-proven diagnosis were studied in terms of demographics, best-corrected visual acuity at arrival and at last visit, the clinical course after visit, ocular history, and combination therapy by the previous ophthalmologist.Results: Out of the 200 eyes of 197 patients with infectious keratitis, 14 eyes of 14 patients were treated with topical corticosteroids before a culture-proven diagnosis. All 14 patients were referred, as they had severe keratitis that could not be cured with topical antibiotics and corticosteroids. Based on the culture results, we diagnosed Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) in six patients, fungal keratitis (FK) in two patients, bacterial keratitis (including a suspected case) in two patients, and unknown cause in four patients. Two patients with AK, FK, and unknown keratitis had unfortunate clinical courses and poor visual outcomes. From the information in the referral letters, at least six of the 14 patients were treated with either acyclovir ocular ointment or valaciclovir tablets, along with topical corticosteroids.Conclusion: Application of topical corticosteroids for keratitis that does not respond to empirical antibiotic therapy is harmful since AK or FK is likely involved in these topical antibiotic-resistant cases.
