As a young scientist in Brazil, my journey began with a modest education in a public school system that often lacked the resources needed to provide students with comprehensive support. However, with persistence and determination, I successfully gained admission to the University of São Paulo, a prestigious institution and one of the top universities in Latin America. My research focuses on the relationship between the nervous and immune systems in psychosis, a topic I am deeply passionate about. In this piece, I will discuss the systemic issues within the Brazilian education and research systems and delve deeper into my own challenges and achievements as a young scientist in Brazil, sharing insights that can inspire others in similar situations. AbstractPurposeConclusionsSince 2014, an educational activity on radiation and health in northern Japan has been carried out by young scientists, the so-called ‘Educational Symposium on Radiation and Health (ESRAH)’. Close cooperation has been continued in preparing for any possible emergency response to radiation accidents because several facilities, e.g., the Tomari Nuclear Power Plant in Hokkaido and the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility in Aomori prefecture. The ESRAH meeting has provided informational exchange and discussion forum on a broad range of subjects in various. In 2023, the 10th Memorial ESRAH meeting took place to boost scientific understanding and multidisciplinary collaborations for young scientists. Herein, we report on the ESRAH2023 symposium and analyze the research categories of young scientists from the past 10-year presentations.To date, the ESRAH meeting has successfully provided a chance for multi-disciplinary research, which accounted for 27% of the total despite the COVID-19 pandemic. We found that the fraction of multi-disciplinary research in 2023 was the highest during 10-year ESRAH meetings. Meanwhile, amongst the research categories, physics, chemistry, and pharmacological studies were indicated to be less for young scientists. It is desired that further collaboration between physics, chemistry, and pharmacology in addition to the current fields would not only clarify radiation effects on the human body but also promote emergency medical care for radiation exposure in the future. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union and the opening of borders, numerous measures have been taken to internationalize Russian science. In particular, publications in journals that are listed in international scientific citation databases have become a point of closer focus. Universities and scientific organizations began inviting foreign professors and sending their own staff and students abroad on international internships. After the start of the Special Military Operation in Ukraine in 2022, Russian science faced numerous sanctions that entailed a reduction in international cooperation. However Russian scientists have accumulated 30 years of experience in active participation in international cooperation and academic mobility. Nevertheless, there is still a significant lack of understanding of how this experience will impact the scientific careers of Russian scientists going forward. In this article, the authors present the results of a study dedicated to exploring this issue. The theoretical framework for the analysis is based on such a concept as “the Three Careers of an Academic” (organizational, cognitive, and community careers) proposed by German experts in sociology of science Johan Gl?ser and Grit Laudel. The empirical data used in the study include materials from in-depth interviews with young scientists under the age of 39, collected in 2020–2021 as part of a project known as “International Mobility of Russian Young Researchers”, as well as the results of a sociological survey of 7,255 highly productive scientists conducted under the “Monitoring of education markets and organizations” in 2022. All respondents had spent more than three months abroad. The study revealed that international mobility has a comprehensive impact, noticeable in all three components of a scientific career. Acquired knowledge and skills, as well as involvement in international projects contribute to the development of a researcher’s cognitive career, while new professional connections promote advancement in the international scientific community. As for the “organizational dimension” of a career, mobility does not have a direct influence on career advancement. However, mobility often leads to personal changes, particularly influencing one’s determination to switch jobs and seek better conditions. These assessments are presented for the first time and can be useful in developing recommendations for science and technology policies regarding the revision of mobility support programs in light of the new geopolitical reality.

The aim of the YC is and always has been to support early-career researchers in the diverse fields of crystallography and the rejuvenation of the field on a national scale. Over the past decade, we have curated events, platforms, and educational content tailored to foster collaboration and knowledge transfer among young crystallographers. In this article, we introduce our group and show how this active and diverse community has shaped the rejuvenation of crystallography in Germany, strengthened by the support of our national society.

Young scholars from Moscow (Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russian State University for the Humanities, A.N. Kosygin Russian State University, Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences), Kaliningrad (Immanuel Kant IKBFU ), St. Petersburg (St. Petersburg State University, Russian National Library) and Nizhny Novgorod (N. I. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University) and from Poland (Bialystok State University) attended the conference. During the first session, Slavic literature was examined from the point of view of poetics and intertextual connections based on the material of Slovenian (short prose of I. Cankar), Czech (drama by V. Havel), Polish (poetry of A. Mickiewicz), as well as Serbo-Croatian (the anthem of the former Yugoslavia) literature; the second meeting combined reports with literary and philosophical issues, examining Polish (J. Iwaszkiewicz, Ch. Milosz), Czech (R. Maly), Bulgarian (V. Paskov) and Macedonian (M. Andreevsky) literature; the focus of the third session was the types of Russian-Slavic literary connections using Russian-Czech examples (correspondence between A.N. Pypin and E. Krasnogorskaya, comparison of the activities of F.L. Chelakovsky and A.S. Pushkin, Russian echoes of the drama R.U.R. by K. Capek), as well as Russian-Balkan materials (translations of J. Dučić’s poetry, echoes of the Balkan vampire theme in Russia in the XIXth century); the fourth meeting was dedicated to the problems of studying modern Slavic literatures, the participants turned to Czech (M. Urban, S. Beeler), Slovak (P. Vilikovsky) and Bulgarian (T. Dimova) literatures. The subsections were moderated by employees of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, specialists in Slavic literatures. Meeting participants and moderators actively engaged in scientific dialogue, identified problematic issues, and outlined further prospects for research. In addition to the speakers who took part in the conference every year, new participants joined the conference this year, which indicates the relevance of this regularly held scientific event.

On May 23–24, 2023, a regular conference for young scholars was held, dedicated to the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture. As with the previous events, the conference was held in a mixed format: at the Institute of Slavic Studies and on the ZOOM platform. The History section was attended by young scholars from various cities of Russia and abroad: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Voronezh, Kazan, Rostov-on-Don, Prešov (Slovakia) and Pécs (Hungary). The papers covered a wide range of issues of the history of Slavic countries and peoples, from the early Middle Ages to the beginning of the XXI century. The participants of the conference touched upon the problems of national identity, borders and frontiers, preservation of historical memory, international relations, as well as issues of cultural history of Slavic peoples. The authors involved a wide range of sources in their work, including medieval literature, diplomatic and archival documents, as well as newspaper and magazine articles. Most of the reports aroused the interest of the audience and led to lively discussions. The discussion was attended not only by the participants of the conference, but also by the scholars of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, many of whom also acted as moderators of individual subsections. Thus, as in previous years, the conference of young scholars «Slavic World: Community and Diversity» served as a good platform for the exchange of experience and the establishment of closer ties between various scientific institutions. The proceedings of the conference will be summed up in a published collection of abstracts.

The research satisfies the current world trends in future jobs, where team work is considered as one of the significant soft skills till 2030. The purpose of the paper is to identify the key team roles, which have leading impact on social competence of young scientists in Ukraine. The novelty of the research is represented by the created theoretical model of social competence and its connection with team work. The proposed model includes such blocks as: approaches to definition, structural elements in combination with evaluation criteria, types of an individual’s social competence, functions and levels of social competence as well as approaches to social competence research. The object of the scientific research is the process of using team work tools in social competence management of young scientists’ teams. The research methodology includes such methods: comparative analysis, critical analysis, descriptive analysis, factor analysis, and cluster analysis. The research is based on the results of the special direction of the mass sociological survey of young scientists in Ukraine. The limitations of the research are that the period of gathering data covers 2020 year before the war in Ukraine. The Belbin’s approach to team roles was taken for researching the current state of team work as an important part of social competence of young scientists in Ukraine. The obtained results confirmed quite equal distribution of managers’ types in the teams of young scientists. The most important team roles are Implementer and Team-worker that corresponds to the young scientists’ basic functions. But, such team roles as Monitor-evaluator, Resource Investigator and Plant require better development. The practical value of the research for the young scientists’ community is in the use of the levels of team-role orientations in building the young scientists project teams and developing their social competence, which gives the opportunity to improve the education and training of young scientists. The possible directions of the research development are studying of the other approaches to team management, stress management and emotional well-being of young scientists. The possible ways of developing team work in particular and social competence in general in the process of education and training of young scientists are the implementation of special modules of soft skills development.

Background: The strategy of the modern educational policy of Kazakhstan endeavours to develop the human capital of Kazakhstani youth as the intellectual foundation of the nation. Despite the intensive development of the network of scientific organizations in Nur-Sultan and Almaty that remain the main scientific centres of the country, among the challenges for the higher education system the low scientific activity of regional universities is stated. Purpose: This study aims to explore the effectiveness of state and institutional support measures in building the research capacity of early-career researchers at regional universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Design/methodology/approach: The research methodology is based on a review and analysis of literature and documents on the state and institutional support of young researchers in Kazakhstan; an analysis of the effectiveness of measures for building the research capacity of young researchers at the regional universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan; and a survey of young researchers from regional universities in Western Kazakhstan. Findings: The study results highlight the fact that the effectiveness of state and institutional support measures in capacity building of early-career researchers at the regional universities in the Republic of Kazakhstan is associated with attracting scientific mentors, including research activities into the teaching workload, providing freedom of action and a creative day for research, launching a bonus pay for research activities, centralizing and organizing the work of the Boards of Young Scientists consisting of the highly-quali- fied research staff of universities on a country level. Conclusions: The study results offer insights on developing a new mechanism for building the research capacity of young scientists in the regional universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan and launching mentoring programs for early-career researchers. The paper presents an analysis of the social responsibility of young scientists in Ukraine during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is based on the results of a mass sociological survey conducted as part of the project "Realisation of the potential of young scientists in the integration of science, education, business". The research methodology examines the key characteristics of the young scientist's profile. The research is limited to the period before the war in Ukraine. The obtained results demonstrate the directions of their social responsibility, including the effectiveness of promoting information about scientific achievements, ways of popularisation of science, the resources necessary for the success of young scientists, the commercialisation of intellectual property rights of young scientists and the implementation of scientific and practical developments of young scientists. The purpose of the paper is to identify the marketing tools, which are promising areas of functional provision of strategic management of young scientists’ human capital in Ukraine. The novelty of the research is represented by the created theoretical model of the conceptual scenario of strategic management of young scientists’ human capital. The object of the scientific research is the process of using marketing tools in strategic management of young scientists’ human capital. The research methodology includes such methods: comparative analysis, critical analysis, statistical analysis, economic-mathematical analysis and graph-analytical. The research is based on the results of mass sociological survey of young scientists in Ukraine performed within the framework of the project «Realization of the young scientists’ potential in integration of science, education, and business» (0120U102126) in 2020 year. The obtained results confirmed fully the proposed hypothesis H1 and H2 and partially the hypothesis H3. The discussion section of the paper proposes the improved method of evaluating the human potential of young scientists, which includes four vectors: assessment of business qualities of educational managers, evaluation of the effectiveness of the organizational structure of management of scientific and educational institutions, assessment of the overall effectiveness of marketing activities of scientific and educational institutions, general evaluation of marketing potential of human development in the strategic management of human capital of research and educational institutions. The fourth component is proposed to produce marketing tools used by young scholars based on the results of a mass sociological survey. The practical value of the proposed instruments for the young scientists’ community and scientific and educational institutions, where they are employed, is in the use of the adapted graph-analytical method, which gives the opportunity to assess the marketing tools in strategic management of young scientists’ human capital.

The Second Summer School on Space Research, Technology and Applications took place between 3 – 10 July 2022 at the National Astronomical Observatory (NAO) in Rozhen, Bulgaria. The school is held for the second year and is organized by the Branch “Cosmos” of the Union of Physicists in Bulgaria. The event brought together PhD students and young scientists, researchers in the field of space sciences. Speakers from prestigious universities and research institutions gave six lectures and two short presentations. Three practical groups were formed, which lasted a whole week, and on the last day the participants presented their results. During three half-day workshops, participants learned about new business opportunities and worked on a practical task with real data and specialized software. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article is devoted to the issue of supporting young scientists in wartime conditions. The general problems and challenges of the activities of young scientists with the beginning of a full-scale war are considered. The support of young scientists at the national level, directly through the activity of the Young Scientists Council at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, is analyzed. Initiatives to support young scientists of Ukraine at the international level were noted. The main projects of the Scholar Support Office were considered. The current agenda of Russian scientific policy pays much attention to measures aimed at supporting the mobility of scientific personnel (including young ones). The purpose of this study is to analyze how the experience of international mobility affects the objective and subjective indicators of employment of Russian Doctorate Holders, and to find out whether the experience of working or studying abroad always gives advantages when returning to the home country. The empirical base of the study is the data of the project “Monitoring survey of Highly Qualified R&D Personnel” (N=1742 for the year 2019). The obtained results show that the impact of the international mobility on the careers of Russian researchers is a complex phenomenon that is not limited to positive effects. A number of advantages can be received for the “non-mobile career”, when loyalty to the current organization is rewarded. Along with the implementation of mobility support programs, it is necessary to create an institutional environment in which researchers with experience in international mobility can maximize their professional potential and have a favorable environment for building a scientific career.

Introduction. In the era of globalization and the development of the digital economy, the key resource for the development of the state is human resources, that is why all developed countries have engaged in competition to attract talented young researchers. The purpose of the article is to analyze successful foreign practices of countries that are leaders in innovative development (USA, China, South Korea, Great Britain, France) to support young researchers and formulate, on the basis of this analysis, recommendations for their use in Russia. Materials and Methods. The study used scientometric methods, in particular, statistical, content analysis, thesaurus, as well as graphical analysis and mathematical methods for processing structured and unstructured big data. Results. The analysis of tools for identifying and supporting young researchers from foreign countries – leaders of innovative development, including activities implemented by government, scientific foundations, universities, associations and research agencies, councils of scientific societies and other institutions is presented. A large number of support tools was considered at all stages of building a career in the field of science, from identifying talented youth to financial and social support for young doctors of science. Recommendations on expanding the range of such tools in Russian practice were formulated. Discussion and Conclusion. The study is of interest to Russian scientific foundations willing to emulate the best foreign practices, as well as to federal executive bodies in order to make effective decisions on the way of improving the system of scientific funding.

This article introduces assistant professor Gregor D. Wehinger of the Institute of Chemical and Electrochemical Process Engineering at Clausthal University of Technology. Besides recent research projects and teaching activities, he gives an overview about his commitment to the community. He reports on current research results in the field of CFD modeling of packed‐bed reactors, redox‐flow batteries, and multiphase systems. The Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation to attract young promising personnel to research activities at the end of 2018, an additional budget was set up, aimed at creating new research laboratories in academic institutions. Scientific and organizational problems that were identified at the stage of the creation and development of new laboratories are discussed. The disintegration and high specialization of institutes at the initial stage of the creation of laboratories affected the speed and quality of the decisions. The selection of young professionals and their employment in the institutions in the shortest possible time in 2018 was the main requirement for obtaining additional funding. At the beginning of 2019, for most organizations, the main problems of a mainly technical nature were the updating of research plans for 2019, taking into account additional budget works opened for new laboratories. Inaccuracies in the coordination of labor costs, financing direct and indirect costs were identified. Taking into account the staff youth, the main risks for new laboratories are the fulfillment of indicators for the state task (articles in journals) and the provision of scientific staff salaries over 200% of the average salary in the region (attraction of additional extrabudgetary funds). Also, taking into account that employees with little experience were taken into new laboratories, it is quite difficult to apply a well-tested Personal Research Activity Rating tool for financial motivation, and other strategies are needed for “the cold start” of new research laboratories in academic institutions. The options of scientific and organizational measures considered in the article are aimed at reducing the risks of the formation of new laboratories and transforming them into points of growth and exchange of best practices among other scientific and educational organizations.

Abstract Where should I submit my paper? This is a question that young scientists and trainees frequently ask. In this Commentary, we advise on how to make such a decision whilst balancing the risks and benefits. We argue that trying to publish in top tier journals may not always be the best option and that publishing in indexed, open access journals may expose research to the same or larger audiences. The value of research should not be judged according to the publishing journal’s name, but rather from other measures of impact such as successful commercialization of new technologies, number of citations, and downloads. We also highlight the role of mentors, who have the responsibility to protect the long-term interests of their trainees by balancing the consequences of acceptances and rejections.

The publication explores the features of the digital technologies’ usage to organize the work of the Young Scientists’ Councils and describes the best practices. The digital transformation of society and the quarantine restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have forced the use of various digital technologies for scientific communication, the organization of work for youth associations, and the training of students and Ph.D. students. An important role in increasing the prestige of scientific activity and encouraging talented young people to participate in scientific projects belongs to the Young Scientists’ Councils, which are created at scientific institutions and higher education institutions. It is determined that the peculiarities of the work of Young Scientists’ Councils are in providing conditions for further staff development of the institution in which they operate; contribution to the social, psychological and material support of young scientists and Ph.D. students; creating an environment for teamwork and collaborative partnership; development of leadership and organizational qualities; contribution to the development of digital competence. The advantages of using electronic social networks in higher education and research institutions are analyzed, namely: general popularity and free of charge; prompt exchange of messages and multimedia data; user-friendly interface; availability of event planning functions, sending invitations, setting reminders; support of synchronous and asynchronous communication between network participants; possibility of access from various devices; a powerful tool for organizing the learning process; possibility of organization and work of closed and open groups; advertising of various events, etc. Peculiarities of managing the activity of the Young Scientists’ Council with the use of digital technologies are determined. The Young Scientists’ Council is a social system, and therefore the management of this system refers to social management. The effectiveness of the digital technologies’ usage to manage the activities of the Young Scientists’ Council depends on the intensity and need for their use to implement organizational, presentation functions and to ensure constant communication. The areas to apply digital technologies for the work managing of Young Scientists’ Councils are sorted as the presentation of activity; distribution of various information for young scientists; conducting questionnaires, surveys; organization and holding of scientific mass events; managing of thematic workgroups, holding of work meetings. It is generalized and described the experience of electronic social networks usage for organizing and conducting of scientific mass events.

Planetary science and deep space exploration under the background of changes unseen in a century have provided young scientists with a golden opportunity. The frontier scientific issues of planetary science and the critical technical challenges of deep space exploration have yet to be explored by young scientists. However, some factors restrict young scientists from devoting themselves to this area. This paper summarizes opportunities and challenges from the perspective of young scientists. It also proposes corresponding policy recommendations, hoping the dream of a powerful country in planetary science and deep space exploration come true with the promoted participation of young scientists. In this study, methodological paradigms and research aspects of the organizational culture of a scientific institution were considered, since such organizations have their own special specifics of work unlike commercial organizations, which is a littlestudied topic. It is figured out using cluster analysis procedures. The results of the analyses consist of the existing approaches to the definition of "organizational culture" and gave the author's definition of organizational culture for scientific institutions, has developed a multi - model of the organizational culture and proposed a mechanism for implementing. The main results has showed that to address this issue, companies need to transform the organizational culture in such a way as to take into account the current motivational needs of young people and labour involvement process. The article contains an analysis of the on-line sociological study of young scientists and teachers from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv conducted in 2016. This study is a continuation and development of public opinion polls of young scientists of the NAS of Ukraine, initiated in 2015, and a survey of young scientists at the National University of Kyiv in 2014. The analyzed data covers young researchers’ responses regarding to patenting, publication activity, participation in international scientific cooperation, academic mobility, plans for a future career. Authors made comparison of the performance of graduate students and young scientists from academic and university sectors. The authors of the study recommend adapting more flexible policy of lecturing in universities in accordance with the indicators of European countries, which will allow university employees to devote more time to scientific research. The article contains an analysis of the on-line sociological study of young scientists and lecturers from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv conducted in 2016. This research is a continuation and development of public opinion polls of young scientists of the NAS of Ukraine, initiated in and a survey of young scientists of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv initiated in 2014. The research methodology is presented. The analyzed data covers young researchers’ responses regarding on housing, financial needs, households and equipment, job satisfaction, plans for their future careers. Authors made comparison of the performance of graduate students and young scientists from academic and university sectors. As a result of the study, the wellknown issues in Ukrainian science regarding the unsatisfactory social and economic situation of young scientists, the lack of equipment and materials for conducting scientific research at the world level were confirmed. Publishing a scientific article is challenging for early-career researchers and clinicians. Success is not solely determined by robust research methods, but also by clear and logical presentation of results. Without clear communication, disruptive findings can be overlooked. A well-structured manuscript leads the reader logically from the introduction to the conclusion. Maintaining a consistent narrative ensures lasting impact. In this paper, we provide practical guidelines for drafting an effective scientific manuscript. Carefully crafted articles increase the chance of acceptance and improve comprehension among diverse specialists. It is often claimed that the survival of humankind depends on the behavior of humans with reference to the rapid demographic expansion of population and to the ever increasing need for energy and food. Environmental "pollution", i.e. the anthropic impact, is often blamed, although fake information (both news and "truth") are the most devastating forms of "pollution". The diffusion of a false alarm is simply cultural terrorism. These items are not only a matter of philosophy, economy, or sociology but rather, they are the common-sense concern for everyone, with every variety of cultural background and interest. The management of catastrophes is very often carried out in a completely improper way with great ethical implication, relying on a fake concept of "science" (Gregori et al., 2018). The mass media seek audience and sensationalism. A prophet of doom is always welcomed much more than any realistic and more understating perspective. Just a basic warning is therefore to be strongly recommended, i.e. one must always rely on very few fundamental premises. This is the focus of the present short commentary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Where should I submit my paper? This is a question that young scientists and trainees frequently ask. In this Commentary, we advise on how to make such a decision whilst balancing the risks and benefits. We argue that trying to publish in top tier journals may not always be the best option and that publishing in indexed, open access journals may expose research to the same or larger audiences. The value of research should not be judged according to the publishing journal's name, but rather from other measures of impact such as successful commercialization of new technologies, number of citations, and downloads. We also highlight the role of mentors, who have the responsibility to protect the long-term interests of their trainees by balancing the consequences of acceptances and rejections. Abstract The 32nd summer school of the Research Community for Mechanisms of Mutations was held at Inter-University Seminar House in Hachioji city, Tokyo, from September 7 to 8, 2019. Thirty-eight people attended this annual event, and three eminent researchers were invited to discuss DNA damage induced by endogenous aldehydes, “action-at-a-distance mutagenesis” and a novel genome editing method, and DNA repair in fungi and plants. In addition to these plenary sessions, eleven participants presented their own research in oral sessions. More than half of the participants were young scientists such as graduate/undergraduate students, post-doctoral fellows and assistant professors. All members joined in enthusiastic discussions and acquired new scientific knowledge through these two days.

The German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS) aims to develop subject-specific methods, which are then to be applied in collaboration with various medical domains. Furthermore, the support of young scientists is an essential field of activity of the GMDS, since the need for junior staff has increased due to the acceleration in medical digitization. A specially established Presidential Commission strives to promote young talents and scientists in the above-mentioned disciplines. For this purpose, various strategies and concepts are elaborated in regular meetings and finally implemented. Abstract This volume presents the selected papers of young computational scientists – participants of YSC'2018. Annual Young Scientist Conferences (YSC) in computational science are traditionally held since 2012 by the University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands) and ITMO University (St. Petersburg, Russia) as the open international event, which aim to develop a dialogue about the present and future of computational science with a focus on applications of modeling and simulation solving a wide range of problems of science, industry, and business. The article presents a study which examines the diversity in terms of representation of gender and countries of origin at the 66th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (LiNo 16) held in Lindau, Germany. The study analyzed data from the LiNo16 handbook which contained all the relevant information on the participants. Results reveal the lack of diversity from the total number of Nobel Laureates and increased diversity of participation is needed to improve scientific development.
