Seven young researchers presented their studies in the field of traditional Japanese herbal medicine (Wakan‐yaku) at the Fifth Annual Young Researcher Forum held the day before the 2024 annual meeting of the Japan Society of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences for Traditional Medicine. Ms Tanide presented on the changes in flavonoid and synephrine content in chimpi based on the storage period. Ms Hamai discussed natural compounds that contribute to improving bortezomib resistance in myeloma cells and their mechanisms of action. Ms Nishiura presented the production of a monoclonal antibody against geniposide and its application in indirect competitive enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Mr Hatae presented about the effects of ninjin'yoeito on cisplatin‐induced anorexia and the variations in intestinal clock genes. Ms Nose explored the analgesic effects of bushi‐containing Kampo formulas, with a focus on goshajinkigan's improvement of cold allodynia. Dr Oda discussed the antifungal activity of henna leaves against Malassezia. Lastly, Mr Fukuda presented how cultivation environments affect the quality of Schizonepeta spikes, including their morphology and component content. The event, conducted both in person and online, attracted a total of 54 participants. School‐based teaching on climate change rarely draws on diverse experiences and knowledge about climate change that circulate in migrant homes and communities. We set out to consider experiences of climate change education (CCE) in schools in Manchester, UK, and Melbourne, Australia, among migrant‐background students. We interviewed young people aged 14 to 18 and educators in multicultural secondary schools about climate change education. We then trained and supported young people to interview their parents. Here, we show how those interviews built young researchers’ appreciation of family stories. Those accounts revealed aspects of parents’ lives growing up that provided a platform from which families could discuss the changing relevance of climate change in their countries of origin and present locations. From those shared insights emerged critical, contextually informed understandings of climate change. Given those outcomes, we argue that intergenerational and cross‐cultural storytelling, when brought into dialogue with scientific knowledge, can support climate change educators. They can then draw upon a range of knowledges and responses to climate change wider than that, which currently exists in most classrooms. We conclude by suggesting that among diverse learner cohorts, what then becomes possible is work to build a greater sense of agency and capacity for empathy with respect to climate change. Young researchers’ competence for scientific research is a significant starting point for their professional development, but also an extremely important prerequisite for realising their full potential within the academic community. This implies the need for the provision of organized professional support to young researchers. The goal of this research was to determine the needs and opportunities for improving the professional support of young researchers (PhD students, assistants, postdoctoral students). For the purposes of this research, an e-questionnaire for young researchers was prepared (N = 335). The research results confirm that the quality of support for young researchers provided by scientific professional institutions and individuals is determined by young researchers’ years of work experience, work-professional status, and educational-scientific field. The research results will show methods for improvement and enhancement of the scientific research quality of young researchers. At the current stage of socio-economic development, one of the key tasks is to ensure that education quality matches labour market expectations, and the industry of science and technology is no exception. Nowadays, there is no systemic evaluation and due regard of research staffing needs and competencies required in this field. Hence, the gap between the current level of human capital development and its necessary level is ever increasing. This study focuses on leading research teams working in the area of advanced manufacturing technologies. The main research methods are the following: publication activity analysis for organizations in the Ural Federal District (henceforth UFD) in the field of advanced manufacturing, bibliometric mapping for identifying research teams, a series of in-depth interviews with research team leaders, job postings analysis using HeadHunter website database. Key findings: 1) we developed a methodology to identify leading research teams in the UFD that possess unique research and technology competencies in the field of advances manufacturing technologies; such teams and their leaders were identified; 2) in-depth interviews with research team leaders allowed to determine the most sought-after competencies for young researchers; 3) we compared the results of qualitative analysis (the in-depth interviews) with the final list of required competencies obtained in the process of analyzing job postings in the area of advanced technology in the UFD using the HeadHunter website. Thus, we identified the pools of the most sought-after competencies for the research and manufacturing sectors in the field of advanced manufacturing technologies. Identifying the most sought-after and in-demand competencies in the UFD leading research teams can inform decision-making on updating university study programmes to ensure that student training matches the needs of the industry of science and technology in the UFD.

July 2023 saw the high point to date of my 25+ years in academe. I had the pleasure of presenting a workshop—“ Strategies for Writing Effective Qualitative Research in Healthcare”—at the 18th annual conference of the International Society for the Study of Self-Injury (NSSI). Hosted by the Medical University of Vienna, the conference featured dozens of presentations, of which a sizeable minority were qualitative in nature. Introduction Although a number of articles offering advice for early career researchers have been published, no systematic review has summarized the available recommendations. This study aimed to enhance young researchers by reviewing the literature and providing a comprehensive set of tips and advice, applicable to a broad range of scientific fields. Methods The systematic review was performed in PubMed database. Relevant articles published from 1 January 1990 to 31 December 2020 were located according to a comprehensive search algorithm. Inclusion criteria were English language, articles containing clearly formed recommendations, and articles including recommendations that could be utilized by researchers working in a broad range of disciplines. The search algorithm provided 62 articles. From those, 18 fulfilled the chosen criteria and were included in the review. One further publication was added that did not emerge from the search algorithm but came up according to the snowballing approach. Results In total, 208 advice suggestions (‘tips’) emerged from the studied articles. Upon classification they were categorized into five broad thematic groups: ‘Funding and research proposal writing’ (26 tips), ‘Mentorship, networking and collaboration (25 tips), ‘Enhancing visibility as a researcher’ (28 tips), ‘Writing and publishing a journal article’ (43 tips), and ‘Personal and professional development’ (86 tips). Conclusions This is the first systematic review summarizing useful recommendations for young researchers with regard to initiating, conducting and promoting their scientific work and career. The provided guidelines form a valuable and easy to read tool that can inspire and encourage young researchers in building a successful scientific career while avoiding common pitfalls.

Explores science and social science early career researchers' (ECRs) perceptions and experiences of peer review, seeking also to identify their views of any pandemic-associated changes that have taken place. Data are drawn from the Harbingers-2 project, which investigated the impact of the pandemic on scholarly communications. Peer review, one of the activities covered, is singled out as it proved to be the activity of greatest concern to ECRs. Findings are obtained from interviews, which covered around 167 ECRs from China, France, Malaysia, Poland, Russia, Spain, UK and US, supplemented by an international survey that took the data out to a bigger and wider audience for confirmation and generalisation. Results obtained are enhanced by comparisons with pre-pandemic evidence yielded by Harbingers-1, the forerunner of the present study, and anchored in an extensive review of the literature. Main findings are: 1) most ECRs were experienced in peer review, both as reviewers and authors, but few had formal training; 2) half the ECRs had a lot or some reservations as to whether peer review vouches for the trustworthiness of research; 3) inadequate reviewers and slow processes were the main peer review associated problems; 4) there was a strong feeling that some kind of compensation, whether monetary or reputational, could help in dealing with these problems; 5) the pandemic impacted most on the speed of processing, with the majority of ECRs saying it had slowed the process; 6) nearly everyone thought that any pandemic-induced impacts would be temporary. The objective of this work was to carry out a first approach to the diagnosis of the labor fluctuation of young researchers in five social science research centers in Havana. For it, a brief tour of the concepts Human Resource Management, Human Capital and Intellectual Capital was made, to achieve integration in a definition that relates the activity carried out by young researchers, with the consolidation of knowledge, opportunities, intellectual production and organizational development. As part of the diagnosis, a AWOT Matrix developed. Some examples related to practices for the retention of intellectual capital in organizations were analyzed. Four young researchers presented their studies in the field of traditional Japanese herbal medicine (Wakan‐yaku) at the third annual young researcher forum entitled "Respecting and Breaking Traditions," held 1 week before the 2022 annual meeting of the Japan Society of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences for Traditional Medicine. Dr. Yokogawa presented her research focusing on the mechanism of the Ayurveda drug‐eluting string, Kshara Sutra, in treating anal fistulas, reporting on its effects on the anal tissue in an anal fistula rat model and its antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, the causative organisms of anal fistulas. Mr. Nakamichi presented his research focusing on the relationship between the efficacy of Kampo medicines with anti‐obesity effects and intestinal microbiota composition. His results partially revealed that bofutsushosan and boiogito affect lipid metabolism in mice and correlate with the intestinal microbiota composition. Dr. Manse reported the anti‐inflammatory activity of diterpenoid components in Enmei‐so (Isodonis Herba), revealing its novel inhibitory activity on nitric oxide released from activated macrophages and on inflammatory cytokines, and identified active components contributing to the inhibition and the mechanism of action. Mr. Yoshikawa reported the anticancer activity of small molecular compounds isolated from the medicinal plants, Valeriana fauriei and Hypericum erectum. His results suggest that five compounds may increase the sensitivity of human cervical carcinoma cells to adriamycin via HSP105 expression suppression. The implementation of the 5-100 Project in Russian universities, aimed at improving their competitiveness through adaptation to world standards and inclusion in the international educational environment has produced some quantitative and qualitative results. Despite the undoubted achievements of the universities participating in the Project, the mechanisms of its implementation have revealed some problematic areas that in the end can primarily affect the young generations of scholars. Therefore, assessing the perception of the 5-100 Project by scholars of different ages is important. The purpose of this article is to analyze, through the lens of a generational approach, the risks associated with the two aspects of universities’ activities. First, the principles of funding under the 5-100 Project and second, the approaches applied for assessment of academic performance. The analysis is based on the results of semi-structured interviews with scientific and pedagogical staff at five universities that participated in the 5-100 Project (108 respondents). We analyzed the answers of respondents in three age groups: young scientists, middle-aged and older scholars. The study showed that there are areas where representatives of all generations are unanimous and areas where the young academics have perceptions different from other generations. There is unanimity in the attitudes to principles of financing practiced in the universities. The younger generation turned to be the most sensitive to insufficient spending on research equipment. In terms of performance evaluation indicators, the younger generation demonstrated the greatest adaptability to the system of formal quantitative assessment, while noting its dysfunctional effects. They have also revealed that it is easier for them to change jobs than for other generations of scholars.

This innovative practice account draws on the researchers' experience of conducting the 'Young Researcher Project' commissioned by the Cumbria Collaborative Outreach Programme, 'Hello Future', which aims to widen participation in higher education. The account focuses on the lessons learned during the project that others may find valuable in conducting similar work. The project involved enabling a small group of young learners to engage in a range of qualitative research techniques including interviewing. Using a reflective process influenced by Brookfield's four lenses-self, student, peer and literature informed feedback-we explore three principles which were central to the project: facilitated participation, flexibility and responsiveness, and interprofessional collaboration. We propose that enabling the young learners to have a voice was dependent on the researchers providing structure and training even though this may, by definition, run counter to the notion of 'participatory' research. In other words, participation on the part of the young learners required support and scaffolding provided by the research team. The account highlights the pragmatism of this approach in the context of completing a project within a short timeframe and to the maximal benefit of different groups, not least the young learners who learned new skills and reported increased levels of self-confidence. One year after the incorporation of Margarita Salas researchers in universities and research centres thanks to the plan for the requalification of the Spanish university system carried out by the Ministry of Universities, this work compiles the main problems and limitations of this postdoctoral contract and outlines some possible solutions for future calls with similar characteristics. The article addresses the problem of staffing of the Russian science and examines the issues pertaining to the training of research and pedagogical personnel at the PhD-programs in the light of forthcoming transition to a new model of doctoral studies (Federal Law №517-FZ of December 30, 2020). The authors assert that one of the reasons for a decrease in the number of professionals (particularly young ones) engaged in research and development in the Russian Federation is the underestimation of the role of PhD-programs in the continuous replenishment of human resources. The article assesses recent regulations and requirements containing approaches to the organization of research and pedagogical personnel training on doctoral programs that will be effective from March 2022, discusses the prospects for the doctoral education and the risks involved.

Collaboration in health science research is one of the most important issues that helps young researchers to take steps in their research activities that are impossible without collaboration. Collaboration also helps mature researchers to broaden their horizons and discover new areas of research. Finally, collaboration allows senior researchers not only to bring young researchers to scientific maturity, but also to create new achievements of human knowledge, especially in interdisciplinary fields. Considering the importance of collaboration in health science research, in this article we will define and explain its various aspects, including the definition of collaboration, its different types and benefits, and important points to create it. Five young researchers presented their studies in the field of traditional Japanese herbal medicine (Wakan‐yaku) at the second annual young researcher forum entitled "Growing Research Buds by Young Investigators," held during the annual meeting of the Japan Society of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences for Traditional Medicine 2021. Mr. Yoneda presented exploratory research on new pharmaceutical seed compounds from garlic (Allium sativum). Dr. Yang investigated whether diosgenin promoted proper axonal regeneration in the brain using a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. Her study clarified the molecular mechanisms of the diosgenin‐driven accurate pathfinding of injured axons. Mr. Nishihara presented his research on promoting the effective utilization of Phellodendron trees in Nara Prefecture. His research team evaluated the possibility of short‐term cultivation, screened for useful components in the leaves. Dr. Ogawa used the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database, which contains reports of side effects associated with drug treatment, to demonstrate the effectiveness of hokizai in reducing side effects, particularly those of anticancer drugs. Dr. Kitamura reported that Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cusson fruit extract and the isolated active ingredients, osthol and imperatorin, strongly inhibited the activity of furin‐like enzymes. Further screening indicated that root extracts of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. and Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi suppressed cell syncytial formation by the S protein. The event was held online, and we had 86 participants. The scientific enterprise in India has grown dramatically in the past few decades, with research emerging as a viable and important career option for students of science. The country thus has a large population of young scientists in the early stages of establishing their independent research careers. While this demographic is arguably the most important group that will determine the future of scientific research in India, their status and concerns are poorly understood. The Indian National Young Academy of Sciences conducted a national survey to better understand and present the challenges faced by them. Through a structured questionnaire, we sought the views of researchers below 45 years of age. Here, we summarize the responses from 854 participants across multiple early career stages. We highlight key challenges faced by these scientists in establishing an independent research career, and suggest steps to address them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Patient and public involvement in research includes non‐academics working with researchers, on activities from consultative tasks, to joint working, and on user‐led initiatives. Health and social care funding bodies require involvement in research projects. A current debate focuses on a perceived lack of empirical “proof” to demonstrate the impact of involvement upon the quality of research. It is also argued that the working relationships between researchers and those becoming involved need to be understood more fully. These areas are beginning to be reported upon but there are few studies of young people involved in health research. This study describes the experiences of adult academics and young people, working together on a large‐scale, UK health research programme. Using qualitative interview and focus group methods, the aim was to explore participants’ perceptions about the process and outcomes of their work together. The importance of cyclical, dynamic and flexible approaches is suggested. Enablers include having clear mechanisms for negotiation and facilitation, stakeholders having a vision of “the art of the possible,” and centrally, opportunities for face‐to‐face working. What is needed is a continuing discourse about the challenges and benefits of working with young people, as distinct from younger children and adults, understanding the value of this work, without young people having to somehow “prove” themselves. Involvement relies on complex social processes. This work supports the view that an improved understanding of how key processes are enabled, as well as what involvement achieves, is now needed.

This paper argues that the research competences that are taught in secondary schools in the framework of the articulation program between upper secondary education and higher education held by FESAD-UPTC, allow an elementary immersion in the scientific field, through workshops and research-type activities as a way to initiate young future researchers. This is a mixed research study, drawing upon action research, which contributes to the role played by the teacher as a researcher of his/her own pedagogical activity. With the aim of training young researchers who are prepared for the scientific culture since upper secondary education, a conceptual exploration of research related topics is established, then the pedagogical experience is presented, where research competences are bundled together and strengthen the learning process (know-know and know-how) of middle school students. The paper relies on the premise that the goal is not for students of upper secondary education to become research specialists, but rather that they acquire a certain amount of knowledge as part of a comprehensive and integrating education.

EuroMediterranean Biomedical Journal (EMBJ) can be considered both a scientific journal and a learning tool for “researchers-in-training” coming from Euro-Mediterranean Countries and other areas of the globe. We announce the launch of an international call for grants from Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS, the Italian National Institute Health), reserved to young Italian and foreign researchers. We strongly encourage the junior researchers that have authored manuscripts published in EMBJ to consider the application to this extraordinary opportunity.

This interview with Arkadiy Margolis, the first vice-rector of MSUPE, focuses on the issues related to the recently acquired membership of the Russian Educational Research Association in the European Educational Research Association (EERA). The Moscow State University of Psychology and Education played an important part in this process which enables Russian researchers to access the entire space of European educational research, to increase their publishing activity, and to participate in foreign international conferences. Also, this means support for young researchers allowing them, for instance, to take part in international schools for young scholars and to acquire new knowledge about modern research tools and design in educational research. All this became possible after a year and a half of hard work of improving ethical requirements and codes of research. MSUPE’s participation in the activities of the Educational Research Association corresponds with the University’s interest in promoting research which became obvious during the development and implementation of the innovative programme of education – the one that won the National Competition for Priority Project in Education all the way back in 2008.

Research misconduct (RM) is an alarming concern worldwide, and especially in Italy, where there is no formal training of young researchers in responsible research practices. The main aim of this study was to map the perceptions and attitudes about RM in a sample of young researchers attending a one-week intensive course on methodology, ethics and integrity in biomedical research, held at the University of Insubria (Italy). To this end, we administered the Scientific Misconduct Questionnaire (SMQ-R) to all attendees at the beginning of the course. Thereafter, SMQ-R was re-administered at the end, to assess the impact of the course on the responsiveness of study participants, which is intended as the frequency of responses other than "don't know". Results show that respondents rate as high their own understanding about rules and procedures related to scientific misconduct (49.2% of respondents), as well as the effectiveness of their institution's measures for reducing it (40%). Most of them (44.6%) perceive as low the chances of getting caught for RM. Some respondents believe that cases of misconduct occur in their workplace (20%–46.2%) and that the integrity of a research is not solely the responsibility of the principal investigator (73.8%). Among the main factors contributing to research misconduct, the need for publications, unclear definition of what constitutes misconduct and pressure for external funding do stand out. Respondents are concerned about the amount of misconduct and express a pressing need for training on research ethics. Remarkably, the responsiveness of participants tends to increase with course attendance. This finding may be useful to support education programmes devoted to research methodology, ethics and integrity among young researchers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Considering that researchers can carry out subtle and complex ways of elaborating the words of others (BAZERMAN, 2011) in the writing of academic-scientific texts, we intend to examine, in this study, forms of dialogue with the words of others in the writing of scientific articles produced by young researchers. Based on theoretical assumptions of the Bakhtin Circle about the dialogical approach of language and on papers that discuss academic-scientific writing, we have analyzed a corpus composed of 10 scientific articles produced by master's students. The results have indicated that, in the process of appropriation of scientific writing by the young researcher, the dialogue with the word of another in its interdiscursive dimension is marked, in a stressed way, by quotative practices with arrangements that, in terms of form and content, are not always considered acceptable from the point of view of academic-scientific conventions. This paper analyzes the current situation of training young scientific and technological talents, attracting talents and making good use of talents in Changli Fruit Tree Research Institute of Hebei Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences. There are some problems, such as lack of talent recruitment planning, and lack of follow-up training mechanism. This paper puts forward some measures, such as formulating a scientific recruitment plan, making a follow-up plan for talent training, building an ability-and performance-oriented evaluation mechanism for scientific and technological talents, so as to attach importance to the training of young scientific research talents and promote the echelon construction of the research institute. The theory of planned behaviour (Ajzen, 1991) was applied to explore intentions of young researchers' involvement in research projects in order to evaluate knowledge transfer within the Slovenian Young Researchers Program. With this, research gap of university intention to cooperate in joint research projects with industry was addressed. The research uses data from a national survey to test which determinants affect their intention and behaviour with respect to cooperating actively with industry and transferring their knowledge to end users. It was found that attitudes and subjective norms significantly influence the intention to engage in university-industry cooperation, explaining over 65% of variability in intention, while perceived behavioural control is not an influencing variable. Results confirm that Ajzen's theory can be applied to the case of cooperation of universities with industry; however, only two of the model's influencing factors proved effective. This article analyses the determinants of job satisfaction amongst Spanish academics, paying particular attention to the impact of research productivity and differences across graduation cohorts. Research productivity is a very relevant factor in explaining job satisfaction in academics in different stages of their career. Interesting differences across graduation cohorts are found as regards the impact of research productivity and other satisfaction drivers, such as other research outcomes - research stays abroad and cooperation with teams abroad - and teaching load, marital status and young children. Higher education institutions aiming to foster productivity and stability in their academic staff should adapt their incentive systems to the preferences and concerns of this particular type of worker and promote their internal motivation. Entering the world of academic writing can be a troublesome experience for young researchers, especially for those writing in ESL. In addition to mastering the specific language of their disciplinary community, they also have to adopt an array of metadiscourse features which help them organize their writing and position themselves towards their content and their readers. Research on the use of metadiscourse in academic writing has indicated that ESL writers generally do not use metadiscourse elements to the same extent and in the same way as native English speakers. The paper will focus on the process of developing the awareness of metadiscourse features with young researchers and will attempt to gain an insight into how they adopt and apply these linguistic elements in their writing. It is based on a case study with three young researchers from the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Novi Sad, Serbia, whose research articles will be analyzed in relation to the correct usage of metadiscourse as well as its potential absence, using Hyland's framework. In the subsequent analysis, a questionnaire and interviews will be used to determine the degree of young authors' awareness of their use of metadiscourse and their approach to applying it in their writing. The triangulation between the corpus analysis and the questionnaire and interview data will try to address the issues of the reasons for using specific markers, the importance they attach to the use of metadiscourse in relation to the content of the research articles, and the methods of learning them, in order to unfold the correlation of beginnings of academic writing and the use of metadiscourse. Intersectional approaches to studying climate change reveal the diverse and uneven ways in which people are impacted by and able to respond to the consequences of climate change. Concurrently, scholars are adapting conceptualisations of environmental responsibility to the challenges of climate change to balance the responsibilities of individuals, collectives and governments and those people with greater and lesser abilities to benefit from and act to curb carbon emissions. This article contributes to these efforts by offering an intersectional conceptualisation of environmental responsibility. It does so by drawing on research in which young people interviewed their parent who migrated to Manchester or Melbourne about their experiences of climate change in their country of origin. These interviews showed that multi-generation migrant families offer a unique perspective on how environmental responsibility is configured. Migrant parents' stories highlight that responsibility is acquired in multi-directional ways that traverse trajectories of education and migration. They also show that how responsibility is constituted gives shape to repertories of action and barriers to environmental responsibility that young people may experience due to cultural differences between themselves and members of their communities and between themselves and their parents. Based on the findings, we argue for a recalibration of the concept of environmental responsibility that accounts for the place-based and intergenerationally informed ways in which understandings of environmental responsibility are (re)produced. Geographical critiques of environmental responsibilisation stand to gain from research that traces perceptions and beliefs on responsibility as it traverses generational and place-based cultures of environmentalism. Group of young researchers in higher education institutions in general perform demandable tasks with relatively high contribution to institutions’ and societies’ innovation production. In order to analyse in more details interaction among young researchers and diverse institutions in society, we aim toward developing the numerical simulation, agent-based model.This article presents foundations of the model, preliminary results of its simulation along with perspectives of its further development and improvements.

Over the last twenty years, childhood studies has challenged the schooled and developmental models of childhood. The children’s rights agenda has combined with academic childhood studies, to emphasise that children are and can be social actors and to seek ways to recognise and support their participation rights. For those who promote the participation of children and young people, there is considerable enthusiasm to involve them in all research stages—from research planning, fieldwork, and analysis to dissemination, leading to growth in what is often called ‘child-led research’. This article draws upon an empirical study of ‘child-led research’ projects, undertaken in Bangladesh, Jordan and Lebanon, for a critical examination of the meanings and implications of ‘child-led research’. In particular, this paper explores what counts as knowledge in social science research within contexts of generational difference and power.
