The present study aims to evaluate the distinct patterns of working memory (WM) capacity of children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), High-functioning children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and children with Down syndrome (DS). More specifically, the current study investigates the complex relationship of fluid intelligence and WM between 39 children with DLD, 20 H igh-functioning children with ASD, and 15 children with DS. All children were evaluated in different measures of Phonological Working Memory, Visual-spatial Working Memory whereas Fluid Intelligence was measured with Raven Progressive Matrices. The result analysis revealed a significant difference among the three groups, both among each function separately and the correlations among them, as well. The results revealed that the DLD groups and High-functioning ASD group exhibited a common picture or an overlap of performances in all Phonological and Visuo-spatial working memory measures, except Backward Digit Recall task. As for the DS group research findings revealed different and unique working memory patterns in comparison to DLD group and High-functioning ASD. Their differences have been studied and further conclusions have been drawn about the different patterns of working memory among the three clinical groups. The implications of these findings are discussed in light of support for learning. The common profile that characterize the two developmental conditions and the distinct pattern of working memory performance in DS group underlies the need for further research in the field. The crucially important role of working memory in the daily activities of human life and education has led researchers to devise ways to improve working memory. The purpose of this research was to determine the effectiveness of instructing self- regulation strategies on processing efficiency and working memory function among female high school students. The design of this study was a quasi-experimental, pre-test, post-test with a control group. Software information processing index and N-Back software have been used as the research tools. The statistical population consisted of all high school female students in Yasouj city in the academic year of 2016-2017, that a 30 sample of students was selected through multi-stage cluster sampling and assigned to two groups of experimental and control. After the pre-test, the experimental group was trained for 12 sessions based on the Pintrich model, and the control group did not receive any training. Again, two groups were evaluated with post-test. Data analysis was performed using MANCOVA. The results showed that the post-test of the processing efficiency and working memory performance has significant difference between the two groups. This indicated that the processing efficiency and working memory performance in the experimental group increased after the training of self-regulation. Based on the results of the present study, it can be concluded that training self-regulation strategies can increase the processing efficiency and students' working memory performance.

Background: Alterations in the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate + glutamine (Glx), which are major inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters, respectively, are frequently associated with insomnia. Previous reports also suggested the involvement of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in insomnia and shorter sleep duration. In the current study, we investigated whether the GABA and Glx levels were altered in the ACC/mPFC in subclinical insomnia while focusing on the sleep duration.Methods: We examined levels of GABA and Glx in the ACC/mPFC of the brain with magnetic resonance spectroscopy in 166 individuals with subjective sleep complaints but without a diagnosis of insomnia. Participants were divided into two groups according to sleep duration (≥6 h/night: n = 79 vs. < 6 h/night: n = 74), which was measured using a wrist-worn actigraphy. Working memory function and overall subjective sleep quality were assessed with a computerized neuropsychological test and self-report questionnaire, respectively.Results: GABA levels in the ACC/mPFC were lower in the shorter sleep duration group relative to the longer sleep duration group (t = -2.21, p = 0.03). Glx levels did not differ between the two groups (t = -0.20, p = 0.84). Lower GABA levels were associated with lower spatial working memory performance in the shorter sleep duration group (β = -0.21, p = 0.03), but not the longer sleep duration group (β = 0.04, p = 0.72).Conclusion: Shorter sleep duration was associated with lower GABA levels in the ACC/mPFC. These findings may provide insight into the underlying mechanisms of impaired working memory function related to insomnia and sleep loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Fasted and postprandial gut hormone plasma levels differ between good and poor surgery responders. • Good responders show higher working memory performance. • Postprandial ghrelin dynamics statistically mediate the relationship between excessive weight loss and a subscore of working memory performance. • Longitudinal data are needed to investigate the gut-brain interactions with regard to cognitive functions after bariatric surgery. Background: Bariatric surgery has been widely recognized as the most efficient long-term treatment method in severe obesity, yet therapy success shows considerable interindividual variability. Postoperative metabolic adaptations, including improved gut hormone secretion (GLP-1, PYY and ghrelin), and restored executive function may play an explanatory role in weight loss, yet causes for poor success in individual patients remain unknown. This study investigates gut-hormonal and cognitive characteristics in extreme weight loss responders to bariatric surgery. Methods : Patients (n = 47) with high or low excessive weight loss (EWL) at least 2 years after Roux-en-Y-gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy were allocated into good responders (GR, EWL 82.4 ± 11.6%) and poor responders (PR, EWL 24.0 ± SD 12.8%) to study differences in postprandial secretion of GLP-1, PYY, ghrelin and in working memory (WM). Results : Mean BMI was 47.1 ± 6.2 kg/m² in PR (n = 21) and 28.9 ± 3.1 kg/m² in GR (n = 26, p < 0.001). Fasted GLP-1 and PYY were comparable for GR and PR (p > 0.2) and increased strongly after a standardized test meal (300 kcal liquid meal) with a peak at 15 to 30 min. The increase was stronger in GR compared to PR (GLP-1, PYY: Time x Group p < 0.05). Plasma ghrelin levels already differed between groups at fasted state, showing significantly higher levels for GR (p < 0.05). Postprandially, ghrelin secretion was suppressed in both groups, but suppression was higher in GR (Time x Group p < 0.05). GR showed significantly higher WM scores than PR (p < 0.05). Postprandial ghrelin (iAUC), but not GLP-1 or PYY plasma levels, significantly mediated the relationship between EWL and a WM subscore (IS score, CI = 0.07 - 1.68), but not WM main score (MIS score, CI = -0.07 - 1.54), in mediation analyses. Conclusion: Excess weight loss success after bariatric surgical procedures is associated with distinct profiles of gut-hormones at fasted and postprandial state, and differences in working memory. Better working memory performance in GR might be mediated by higher postprandial reduction in ghrelin plasma levels. Abstract It has been postulated that gaining control over activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), a key region of the working memory brain network, may be beneficial for cognitive performance and treatment of certain psychiatric disorders. Several studies have reported that, with neurofeedback training, subjects can learn to increase DLPFC activity. However, improvement of dynamic control in terms of switching between low and high activity in DLPFC brain states may potentially constitute more effective self-regulation. Here, we report on feasibility of obtaining dynamic control over DLPFC, meaning the ability to both in- and decrease activity at will, within a single functional MRI scan session. Two groups of healthy volunteers (N = 24) were asked to increase and decrease activity in the left DLPFC as often as possible during fMRI scans (at 7 Tesla), while receiving real-time visual feedback. The experimental group practiced with real-time feedback, whereas the control group received sham feedback. The experimental group significantly increased the speed of intentionally alternating DLPFC activity, while performance of the control group did not change. Analysis of the characteristics of the BOLD signal during successful trials revealed that training with neurofeedback predominantly reduced the time for the DLPFC to return to baseline after activation. These results provide a preliminary indication that people may be able to learn to dynamically down-regulate the level of physiological activity in the DLPFC, and may have implications for psychiatric disorders where DLPFC plays a role. Abstract: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent and serious disorder affecting such key cognitive components as working memory. Working memory serves to facilitate and check attention in any individual and to focus on those affairs that need to be retained in mind. This study examines whether a combination of the two therapeutic methods of working memory training and Methylphenidate might be more effective in treating ADHD in children aged 6 to 12 years of age than when methylphenidate is applied alone. Method: Subjects of the study are 48 children suffering from ADHD. They were selected by random sampling. The experimental group included 23 children with ADHD who received a combination of working memory training and Methylphenidate, and the control group which included 25 children with ADHD received Methylphenidate only. To check the effects of the intervention, Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS-48) was applied before and after the intervention. After intervention, data were collect d from the remaining samples in the two groups. Data were examined both through descriptive statistical methods and analytic statistical methods, including T-student test and Quantile-Quantile Plots diagram . Results: The study demonstrated that a combination of the cognitive intervention of working memory training and methylphenidate is more effective in alleviating ADHD symptoms rather than when methylphenidate is applied in isolation. In the CPRS pre-test and post-test, the mean difference of the experimental and the control group was 8.39 and 1.88 respectively, indicating that the working memory group has improved more than the control group. Conclusions: The study reveals that the ADHD symptoms were more contained in the test group than the control group due to working memory training . The cognitive intervention through working memory training may be effective in alleviating the severity of disorder measured in the pre-test.
