Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the technical and tactical styles of the world's best badminton players at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Materials and methods: The research material consisted of the post-event analysis of 58 matches from the Tokyo Olympics. Through AHP analysis (analytic hierarchy process) to 6 temporal variables with a high influence on match/game effectiveness were selected. Match/game statistical analysis, with the one-way measure of the variance (ANOVA), and independent-sample T-test, were conducted by using IBM SPSS for Windows version 22.0 (IBM. Corp. Armonk, NY) in order to compare the statistical differences. Results: This conducted study showed that frequency of strokes in badminton was 1-1.12 strokes/sec, which is one of the longest rally strokes. The mean and standard deviation of the women's singles players, particularly in the knockout stage, is greater than the mean and standard deviation of the group stage. Results show the differences between Group Phase (35.05±9.77, 47.07±13.12, s, P=0.020) and Eliminatory Phase (11.93±1.58, 13.93±2.30, s, P=0.030) respectively. Conclusions: The women's singles competition currently mainly revolves around the technical and tactical styles of "fast-oriented", "offensive-oriented" and “self-oriented”. This is in line with the current trend of development of the world's women's singles athletes' more "masculine" style of play.

Grand Slam tennis tournaments are played on different surfaces. The aims of the present study were to analyse the technical differences in the Grand Slam tournaments (Australian Open or AO, Roland Garros or RG, Wimbledon or W, and the United States Open or US), as well as to establish differences between winning and losing players. A total of 580 sets in 248 matches played in Grand Slams between 2017 and 2018 were analysed. To observe differences between the tournaments, a one-way analysis of variance (Kruskal Wallis) with the Bonferroni post-hoc test was performed. Univariate (Wilcoxon test) analysis of data was carried out to show the differences between the winning and losing performances of sets. Players who had more aces, points won on the 1st serve, winning shots and net points won more matches in the AO, W and US than in the RG (p<.05). However, in RG, players won more receiving points (43.56% of the points played) with chances to break the opponents' service game. The results also showed that the winning players were superior in both service and receiving, and the most influential variables on the outcome of the match were percentage of receiving points won, break points won, and percentage of points won on the first serve. Such knowledge may have implications for the design of appropriate game strategies and specific training sessions to improve performance in professional women's tennis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study describes and analyses the two phases in the development of badminton in Singapore during British colonial rule drawing on the English language newspaper reports. It highlights the ethnic, gender and social class context in the history the game. During the first phase badminton was brought in and played by the military, Europeans and Indian and Chinese migrants. In 1920, the Amateur Sporting Association promoted the game in Singapore and Malaya. Badminton Parties were founded by the Chinese, Malay, and Indian communities and by commercial organizations. The second phase occurred when the Singapore Badminton Association was founded in 1929. Tennis was played by the European, military and Straits Chinese who established their own clubs and played among themselves while badminton was played by the working-class people. The Association lead by an elected Straits Chinese-dominated management team, organised competitions for individual and team events and English boys' schools. The early individual and club competitions were won by Eurasian players. By 1934, the Chinese players and clubs dominated the game. The standards of play of one women's singles and two men's singles Singapore open champions were high considering they also won their respective singles titles at the All-Malaya badminton championships.
