The aim of the paper was to introduce the specialized press oriented towards jazz music and its practitioners that was published from 1953 to 1965 on the territory of the Republic of Serbia. The marked period was chosen for consideration since it represents the most fruitful stage in the development of the press of a specific thematic profile, but also because of the significant changes in the entire Yugoslav society. These changes, as it was possible to show, influenced the complex processes that shaped the press of the time, as well as the attitude towards this musical genre and its practitioners. The processes in question include, first of all: certain internal political movements that consistently modeled the cultural policy of the time, within which jazz attempted to obtain a favorable position; integration of the former socialist state into polarized international currents that implied the use of jazz as a means of affirming the foreign policy orientation of Yugoslav society; and the creation of the operational power of artists for self-organization and the acquisition of certain labor and social rights within the Association of Jazz Musicians. The association was founded in 1953 in Belgrade with the aim of advocating for the rights of contemporary musicians, while at the same time initiating the publication of the first newspaper Jazz: Journal of Popular and Jazz Music (Jazz. List za pitanja zabavne i džez muzike). Under this name, the journal was published from 1953 to 1954, and during the publication period from 1957 to 1958 it changed its name to Bulletin of the Association of Jazz Musicians (Bilten Udruženja Jazz muzičara). After that, in Novi Sad, in 1962, Rhythm – Yugoslav Review of Jazz and Popular Music (Ritam – Jugoslovenska revija za džez i zabavnu muziku) began to be publish by NIP Dnevnik, and later changed its name to Rhythm – Yugoslav Review of Popular Music (Ritam – Jugoslovenska revija za zabavnu muziku), under which it continued to be published until it ceased publication in 1965. more...

FROM A JAPANESE PERSPECTIVE: THE WESTERN INFLUENCES IN THE WORKS OF ŌGAI The article focuses on how Mori Ōgai (1862-1922), a Japanese writer, translator and literary critic, incorporated references to European literature and culture in his novellas: Maihime (The Dancing Girl, 1890), Mōsō (Delusion, 1911) and Hanako (1910). The hermeneutic approach sheds light on the Japanese author’s vivid interest in foreign languages, cultural symbols, philosophy and arts which contributes to the intricate image of foreign influences in his oeuvre and invite his readers and translators in Europe to revisit their own cultural tradition. more...

ISLAMIC civilization ,WESTERN civilization ,CULTURAL identity ,MILITARY invasion ,STANDARD of living - Abstract
Every nation in the world has its own culture and standard of living (way of life) that is a collective phenomenon. Every nation that professes its own faith with process and action, struggles to maintain its national identity as well, and does not mix and mingle itself up with alien civilization. Muslims also have a separate identity vis-à-vis other nations of the world, and if this cultural identity vanishes, then there will be no crystal clear difference between the Muslims and the NonMuslims. If a group wants to dominate other nations and cultures without throwing down the glove at the opponent and launching a military war, the cultural invasion is the most powerful tool, for militarism often causes full swing reaction and tooth and nail fights from the rival group, resultantly the aggressors not only face shameful defeat even after a long time, but also admit their blunders. The victory fetched and provided by might and mine would not bear any sustainable results until the cultural occupation and pervade prevail for a long span of time.In the underlying article, the literal and standard definition of culture and cultural invasion will be explained in detail. After that a research review of the impacts, causes and influences of Western civilization on Muslims will be described in detail, and their prevention will be described in the light of the Quran. .

Παράλληλα, μέσω της εξέτασης των ιδιαιτεροτήτων του εικονογραφικού προγράμματος του μνημείου, διατυπώνονται υποθέσεις σχετικά με την ιδιότητα του χορηγού, ενώ επιχειρείται η σύνδεση του διακόσμου με την τοπική καλλιτεχνική παραγωγή., The church of Saint Stephen near the village of Drakona in Kissamos was decorated with wall-paintings in the second half of the 14th century. Aim of this study is to present the biographical cycle of Saint Stephen, which consists of three episodes, to seek the models used by the artist and to point out his working methods. On the basis of the peculiarities of the iconographic program, assumptions are made on the status of the patron, while through the stylistic analysis of the frescoes is attempted their connection with the local artistic production. more...

12. Looking inward or outward? Vietnam higher education at the superhighway of globalization: culture, values and changes.
- Author

- Abstract
Globalization and internationalization forces have placed Vietnam higher education (VHE) under the pressure of change. Reforming VHE has therefore become imperative for institutions at this crossroad of change forces. However, reform efforts have been ad-hoc, fragmented and unstable. Reform outcomes have remained fairly limited and fall under scrutiny. Drawing on a case study of the Advanced Program, we argue that importing the curriculum from a Western country without thoughtful consideration of the local culture, history and dynamics would result in low cost efficiency and cost ineffectiveness, leading further to a huge waste of resources. We emphasize the importance of an inward-looking approach to higher education reforms because it brings the centuries-long Vietnamese cultural values into play. At the same time, policy borrowing must be accompanied with a culturally responsive curriculum and pedagogy, and it recognizes the role of Vietnamese teaching and learning culture. This inward-looking approach is complementary to an outward perspective, allowing for a comprehensive and solid understanding of the globalization forces and the global power structure within which VHE system is located. Norges musikkhøgskole. Masteroppgave. Musikkteori Since the Japanese Occupation of Korea (1910-1945) and the Korean War (1950-1953), Western Classical music has been prevailing South Korea due to the promotion of Western influence by both Japanese and Korean political leaders. Two significant South Korean contemporary composers Isang Yun (1917-1995) and Unsuk Chin (1961- ) have been arisen from this. Best known for blending Eastern and Western elements in his music, Yun was a composer who took an active role in the attempt of the reunification of the Korean Peninsula. On the other hand, Chin is considered as one of the most accomplished composers today. Following her studies with György Ligeti, she has expanded her musical language also in the more modern genre of electronic music, and producing music that bypasses categorisation of any nation’s ethnomusical characteristics. The project aims to explore and demonstrate the mergence of Korean traditional influences in their music. The recognition of both of the composers’ bi-cultural memoirs is included in the analytic investigation of their piano works, Yun’s Fünf Klavierstücke and Chin’s Piano Etude No. 4 “Scalen”. The thesis is accompanied by the artistic practices and the project includes a lectire-recital as a result of the method of “research-analysis-practice”. more...

W artykule opisano, jak Mori Ōgai (1862-1922), japoński pisarz, tłumacz i krytyk literacki, włączył odniesienia do literatury i kultury europejskiej do swoich nowel: Maihime (Tancerka, 1890), Mōsō (Złudzenia, 1911) i Hanako(1910). The article focuses on how Mori Ōgai (1862-1922), a Japanese writer, translator and literary critic, incorporated references to European literature and culture in his novellas: Maihime (The Dancing Girl, 1890), Mōsō (Delusion, 1911) and Hanako (1910). The walls and ceiling of the nave of the Church of St Atanass in Arbanassi, Bulgaria, are covered in tightly packed compositions. In most compositions the body is only suggested rather than explicitly represented. By contrast, from the seventeenth century the Roman Church encouraged the realistic portrayal of the human body through the Baroque style, which spread throughout Europe. However, realistic depiction of the body did not appear in Bulgarian art and church decoration until the nineteenth century. This paper will argue that the adherence to what appears to be an archaic tradition of representation was for neither wholly theological nor purely aesthetic reasons, but was instead a symptom of the struggle for dominance between Rome and the Patriarchate of Constantinople. The beautiful arts of Bessarabia are little known in the cultural environment of the Republic of Molodva. Ignored in the Soviet period and the loss of the works of many Bessarabian plastic artists constituted a void over the creation and existence of these creators. Only through the donations of Auguste Baillayre and his heirs from Bucharest in 1961 and 2006 (over 400 works) can we talk today about the phenomenon of Bessarabian arts in the context of its interference with European art. more...

Balinese ink paintings started to be created in the 1930s only after Western influences created suitable conditions in Bali. Of major importance were the European painters Walter Spies and Rudolf Bonnet, who decided to live long term in Bali. The artwork discussed in this article is a Balinese ink painting collected by the Czech painter and collector Rosita Charlotta Urbanová and the other artworks are two graffiti paintings by the Malaysian graffiti artist Hafiz Ab Rabman aka KATUN.
2 The dissemination of graffiti art into Malaysia was inspired and influenced by hip-hop culture, skateboarding and also through visits of Malaysians to Western countries. The latest trends in Malaysian graffiti art have shown artists trying to nationalize, localize and anchor graffiti art in Malaysian culture. A comparison of the Balinese ink painting and the two Malaysian graffiti artworks highlights interesting parallels, especially the resemblance of the human profile faces in the selected artworks. - Abstract
This research is about the higher education of Indigenous Emirati women and how they balance the intricate demands of higher education with the social customs of a traditional society and the expectations placed on women. The study sought to identify and comprehend the issues which have affected the educational changes that are taking place, including culture, gender, religion, the influence of Western education processes, and the desire of an Indigenous population to raise their educational practices to an internationally recognised benchmark. The research was aimed at providing insights into the distinctiveness of this group of women from their social and educational perspectives, and provides an alternative view of Emirati women, altogether different from the media stereotypes which have largely become accepted as representations of Arab women. It offers educators and researchers a deeper understanding of the relevant issues, and challenges preconceptions of educated women’s contribution to the workforce in a 21st century Gulf Arab nation. The experiences articulated about their educational encounters in a variety of pre-university environments, their reflections on contemporary university life, and the impact of Westernised influences on higher education in the UAE are put under the spotlight. This qualitative study was undertaken within a constructivist, interpretive paradigm. A total of 43 media students were surveyed and interviewed to understand more about their attitudes and opinions on education and culture. Areas under consideration related to educational environments, learning styles and students’ relationships with teachers, as well as matters relating to cultural identity, cultural sensitivity and gender capital. The analysis extends the sparse knowledge and prevailing attitudes about Arab women held by many Western nations, and unearthed important factors, such as alignment of choosing a university with the established ethos of a conservative religiou more...

Τέλος, η νέα απόπειρα ανάγνωσης της επιγραφής αποκαλύπτει πιθανώς και το επώνυμο του ζωγράφου, που στην περίπτωση αυτή είναι Νείλος Κοκολητζάς., In this article the author revisits an icon depicting the vita of Josef from the museum of the monastery of Gonia, Crete, which was painted by the painter Neilos in 1642, according to its inscription. The analysis of the work, from an iconographic and stylistic point of view, along with additional evidence that stems from the work itself, shed light on aspects of the artistic production in Creteduring the 17th century. Thus, the analysis underpins the close relations that the painters had with Western engravings and that Neilos drew from the work of his contemporaries, like that of Michael Damaskenos. Furthermore, the comparative analysis of the work of Neilos with those of Theodore Poulakis’s showcases that the former was inspired by the latter and his dated icon can be used as a terminus ante quem for the work of the latter. Finally, the new attempt to read the inscription reveals the possible surname of the painter, which in that case would be Neilos Kokolitzas. more...

- Abstract
My research explores my Chinese background experiences of immigration to Australia within the visual domain of Ba-Gua energies dialoguing with selected European painterly influences (especially Jenny Saville) related to Australia, painterly and new ink tradition methods, contemporary Chinese and Chinese-Australian painting unified by Ba-Gua spiritual ideas, through a methodology utilizing impasto and line informed by Chinese and European Romantic opera, all expressed within a contemporary version of Yan Li-ben’s emperor imagery, especially related to Qian or heaven. In this work and others in the folio, I use Chinese Ba-Gua (Qian) and Confucian philosophy to explore Chinese and Western artistic influences and Ba-Gua energies dialoguing with Chinese-Australian visual influences and Peking Opera and contemporary Australian music. I explored the artistic influences that have contributed to the extended sensation or synaesthesia of my painting across the tactile, sonic and optical fields. I drew across sources from ancient Chinese Emperor paintings and ink tradition alongside contemporary British and Australian layered paint and anatomical techniques, as well as draw from Renaissance masters. In addition, this research explores the contemporary themes, which have also influenced my work including intercultural contemporary Australian music. The originality of this approach in my cultural artistic fusion is that the Daoist-like movement of spirit and body (Chou, “Wenren and Culture”2004), expressed within Ba-Gua philosophy, becomes a kinetic unifying factor across a Chinese multi-artform practice. My creative folio included paintings and films which provide evidences for an analysis of both the common point of visual dialogue and cultural realities within these Chinese-Australian confluences towards expression of my artistic identity or voice, which I describe as Qian ‘painterly voice’. This ‘painterly voice’ has five main areas of investigation: firstly, English painter Jenny Saville’s intersection of painterly impasto and Chinese calligraphical line; secondly, the techniques of impasto and line related to Peking opera and Italian lyric opera; thirdly, ancient Chinese painter Yan Li-pen’s iconic emperor series extended to Australia; fourthly, the intersections of the Chinese multi-artform practice where calligraphically line, watercolour suggestiveness, and painterly impasto layering work as synergies and counterpoints to contemporary Australian composition within several music-theatre works; and finally, Ba-Gua ideas into contemporary Chinese artistic ideas in China (Qian and family order within Zhang Xiaogang) and Australia (Chinese-Australian Lindy Lee’s exploration of Zen Buddhism). Ultimately, this research examines how each of these factors culminates in my own personal philosophy and Qian ‘painterly voice’. more...

- Abstract
Sierra Leone was torn apart by a terrible eleven-year civil war. Rebel forces raped and murdered civilians, burned down crops and villages, and looted homes and community structures in a quest to overturn the long-corrupt government. Since 2002 communities have begun the process of developing toward a sustainable peace. Using grounded theory and inductive analysis, this qualitative research study conducted during the summer of 2009 examines the development efforts of two communities in the Northern provinces of Sierra Leone, Lungi and Makeni. Findings reveal that there are three influences playing a role in their development: western, cultural, and national. This research describes the impact that these influences are having on postconflict community development and the ways in which they are working to affect change. This study shows that while western organizations are able to provide means for assistance, they often struggle to connect with the local people. Culturally, leadership and community-based initiatives encourage community cohesion and build on resilience, but are limited by the resources they can provide and the traditions that in some instances undermine issues of equality. Finally, national influences, which appear uniquely situated to link the resources of western influences with local cultural practices, are limited in their ability to make these connections in a way that successfully contributes to Sierra Leone's development. This research suggests that postconflict community development in Sierra Leone would benefit from a more integrated and collective approach on the part of these three main influential systems. Although the findings in this research are not generalizable, they offer some insight for other countries struggling to achieve community development after conflict. more...

- Abstract
Land of the in-between explores how modern architecture responded to demands for political and ideological representation during the Cold War using socialist Yugoslavia as a case-study. Self-proclaimed as universal and abstract, modernism acquired a variety of specific meanings hidden behind seemingly neutral forms that, however, frequently contained decidedly political dimensions. During the Cold War, Yugoslavia deliberately positioned itself halfway between the Eastern and Western blocs, thus representing an excellent case for a study of shifting political meanings ascribed to architecture at that time. This dissertation follows two lines of investigation: transformations of architectural profession, and changes in the modes of architectural representation of the state. Consequences of two key moments are explored: the rise to power of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia in 1945, and its expulsion from the Soviet bloc in 1948. These two moments correspond to two distinct phases that shaped architecture in socialist Yugoslavia: a period of intense Stalinization immediately after WW II, and a period of gradual liberalization after the country's sudden break-up with the Soviet Union. During the short-lived Stalinist period, the regime subjected Yugoslav culture to the doctrine of Socialist Realism. But after 1948, the state relaxed its iron grip, allowing for a degree of intellectual and artistic freedom. At the same time, Yugoslavia reestablished friendly relations with the West, opening itself to influences of Western culture. The revival of modern architecture that followed was in return instrumental in reinforcing Yugoslavia's new image of a reformed Communist country. Land of the in-between argues that Yugoslavia's political shifts gave rise to a uniquely hybrid architectural culture. It combined Communist ideology with Western aesthetic and technological influences to create a mix that complicated the common black and white picture of the Cold War. Architecture in socialist Yugoslavia thus operated within a complex framework of shifting political and cultural paradigms whose contrasts highlight the meanings that post-World War II modernism assumed on a global scale. more...

- Abstract
Ninety years ago Japanese music was essentially monophonic, confined to a limited number of traditional instruments, and completely Oriental in technique and sound. Today, Western harmony and counterpoint are intrinsic elements in much of Japanese music. Highly competent symphony orchestras in Japan perform skillfully orchestrated Japanese scores. Year by year the musical world of Japan becomes more Western. more...
