Climate change intensifies longstanding tensions over groundwater sustainability and equity of access among users. Though private land ownership is a primary mechanism for accessing groundwater in many regions, few studies have systematically examined the extent to which farmland markets transform groundwater access patterns over time. This study begins to fill this gap by examining farmland transactions overlying groundwater from 2003-17 in California. We construct a novel dataset that downscales well construction behavior to the parcel level, and we use it to characterize changes in groundwater access patterns by buyer type on newly transacted parcels in the San Joaquin Valley groundwater basin during the 2011-17 drought. Our results demonstrate large-scale transitions in farmland ownership, with 21.1% of overlying agricultural acreage statewide sold at least once during the study period and with the highest rates of turnover occurring in critically overdrafted basins. By 2017, annual individual farmland acquisitions had halved, while acquisitions by limited liability companies increased to one-third of all overlying acres purchased. Together, these trends signal increasing corporate farmland acquisitions; new corporate farmland owners are associated with the construction, on comparable parcels, of agricultural wells 77-81 feet deeper than those drilled by new individual landowners. We discuss the implications of our findings for near-term governance of groundwater, and their relevance for understanding structural inequities in exposure to future groundwater level declines.

Arizona has a long history of groundwater use, and there is concern about long term groundwater sustainability across the state. We explore groundwater trends across Arizona and how they vary with respect to: (1) whether groundwater pumping is regulated, and (2) relative access to local or imported surface water. Well observations from the Arizona Department of Water Resources are used to quantify water table depth trends and groundwater drilling patterns. There are more than 85,000 groundwater wells in Arizona, and new wells are routinely being drilled. The number of new shallow wells (<200 ft) has decreased over time in all parts of the state. But midrange (200–500 ft) to deep (>500 ft) wells have increased in the past 10 years in regulated and groundwater dominated areas. Most wells are small with low pumping capacities that fall below the regulatory limit; however, there are still large wells being drilled in unregulated areas. Results show statewide decreasing water storage and groundwater levels. Groundwater declines are less severe in the parts of the state that have groundwater regulation. However, looking closer at this trend, groundwater recovery is strongest in areas receiving imported Colorado River water which also implement managed groundwater recharge with the imported water. This study investigated arsenic (As) concentrations in diverse environmental components and their potential impact on the health risks faced by residents of the arsenic (As)-contaminated Nadia district in West Bengal, India. A random selection of 182 cattle and 255 goats from 40 livestock farmers in the district revealed that both animals and humans were naturally exposed to elevated arsenic levels through contaminated drinking water, foods, grasses, concentrate feeds, various fodder tree leaves, and other food/feed resources. The mean As concentration in roughages (483.18 µg/kg DM) was significantly higher (p < 0.001) than in tree leaves (391.53 µg/kg DM), and concentrate feed/ingredients (186.66 µg/kg DM). Pond water exhibited higher arsenic levels (106.11 µg/L) compared to shallow tube well water (47.96 µg/L) and deep tube well water/tap water (10.64 µg/L and 10.04 µg/L, respectively). The mean arsenic concentration in soils DM of fodder fields, crop fields, and grassland was 10.25, 10.58, and 10.20 mg/kg, respectively. It was observed that protein-rich feeds had lower levels of arsenic accumulation (p < 0.048), while fiber-rich feeds containing more cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin had higher arsenic levels (p < 0.017). Goats consumed 73.46% more arsenic per kg body weight compared to dairy cows. Although chronic and sub-chronic arsenic exposure in the district did not typically manifest symptoms or visible signs in ruminant animals, concentrations in the hair and feces of both cattle and goats exceeded normal values. Cattle feces had significantly higher arsenic (410.43 µg/kg DM) levels (p < 0.001) than goat feces (227.00 µg/kg DM), and arsenic concentration in cattle hair (1917.74 µg/kg DM) was also significantly greater (p < 0.001) than goat hair (1435.74 µg/kg DM). Arsenic levels in milk samples from both species were below 10 µg/kg. Liver (356.02 µg/kg DM) and kidney (317.22 µg/kg DM) contained significantly higher (p < 0.001) levels of arsenic compared to muscle (204.23 µg/kg DM), and bone (161.98 µg/kg DM) in local meat-type adult male goats. The skin accumulated the highest amount of arsenic (576.24 µg/kg DM) among the non-edible parts of the goat carcass. The cumulative cancer risk value for adults was 4.96 × 10−3, exceeding the threshold value (1 × 10−6). This suggests a significant risk of cancer development for the population in arsenic-affected areas. Non-cancer risks (hazard indexes) were estimated at 11.01 for adults. Our observations revealed that the highest bioaccumulation of arsenic occurred in the hair of cows, and goats in the examined localities. The biotransformation factor (BTF) for hair was much higher compared to other excreted samples from both species. The calculated BTF followed the order: hair > feces > milk for cows and goats. Livestock farmers in Nadia district are advised to carefully select feed resources, prioritizing those high in crude protein and low in neutral detergent fiber, and they should provide drinking water from deep aquifers to ensure the safety of milk and meat for human consumption. Greensand filtration is a common treatment option for manganese, sulfide, and iron removal; poor maintenance, however, can compromise effectiveness and even lead to increased post-treatment Mn concentrations. A private drinking-water well in exceedance of Health Canada's maximum allowable concentration for Mn was sampled over a 1-year period to assess Mn removal via greensand filtration. Mn concentrations post-treatment were on average twofold higher than raw well water prior to media change. Reducing conditions, evidenced by negative oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) of the effluent, were central to generating soluble Mn(II). Monitoring revealed that water usage patterns caused variability in post-treatment Mn, with peak concentrations (>3.5× higher than influent water) observed after a 7-day idle period. As inadequate oxidant addition can lead to reducing conditions, monitoring ORP may facilitate proxy surveillance for Mn release. Findings underscore the importance of human factors (e.g., aesthetic concerns, barriers to maintenance, perceived risk) when evaluating overall benefits and drawbacks of treatment systems. The performance of gravity recovery and climate experiment (GRACE) and GRACE-Follow On (GRACE-FO) satellites in estimating groundwater level (GWL) changes on a local scale is a challenging issue. Then, this study aims to investigate the performance of GRACE and GRACE-FO in monitoring GWL changes on a local scale compared to observations at groundwater wells and the results of groundwater modeling. The study utilized hundreds of groundwater observational data points and 180 satellite data from 2002 to 2020 in five Iranian provinces. The data from satellites GRACE and GRACE-FO were modified by subtracting hydrological parameters outputs of the global land data assimilation system (GLDAS) from the satellites' estimations. The significant trends in GWL changes were studied by Sen's slope and Mann–Kendall, which represented a significant declining trend in GWL in all studied provinces. Applying 1–2 month time lags to the observational data improved the correlation coefficients between satellite estimations and the observations at groundwater wells. The best correlation coefficients between observational GWL changes and GRACE estimations in Fars, Khorasan Razavi, Sistan and Baluchistan, East Azerbaijan, and Golestan provinces were calculated as 0.53, 0.42, 0.4, 0.51, and 0.36. Those values for GRACE-FO were calculated as 0.95, 0.67, 0.72, 0.78, and 0.3, respectively, which proved the better performance of GRACE-FO compared to GRACE. Meanwhile, the GWL changes estimated from GRACE-FO were compared to the results of groundwater modeling, which was performed by using MODFLOW via the GMS10.4 interface in Azarshahr aquifer located at East Azarbaijan revealed a satisfactory agreement. This study aimed to estimate radon concentrations in groundwater and surface water to evaluate radon (222Rn) contamination in drinking water within the Amreli region of Saurashtra, Gujarat, India. Water samples from 84 sites, covering about 3000 km2, were analyzed using the RAD7 device from Durridge Instruments. Samples were collected in 250 ml radon-tight bottles. Radon concentrations ranged from 0.1 to 13.6 Bq/L, averaging 4.52 Bq/L. At three sites (P9, P29, P35), radon levels exceeded the USEPA limit of 11.1 Bq/L. P9 and P29 are near the Tulsishyam geothermal area, while P35 is close to the Savarkundla fault. Geothermal fluids in Tulsishyam may facilitate radon migration, and swarm-type earthquakes near Savarkundla could also contribute to radon migration. Concurrently, physicochemical parameters like Potential of Hydrogen (pH) and Total Dissolved Solid (TDS) were measured, with no significant correlation found between radon levels and these parameters. Samples were taken from tube wells with depths ranging from 105 to 750 feet, averaging 359 feet. A strong and significant correlation (0.83) was observed between radon concentration and water depth. Health risks from radon exposure were assessed by estimating annual effective dose rates for different age groups through ingestion and inhalation. In some instances, the annual effective dose rate surpassed the WHO-recommended value of 100 µSv/year. Environmental concerns are growing in parts of the rural United States as drinking water wells become contaminated with agrichemicals, and climate change impacts such as drought and extreme rain events disrupt farming practices. Analyzing in‐depth interviews with 29 U.S. rural journalists, we explore the role rural journalists play when reporting on the environment as it relates to agricultural issues. Findings show that reporting about the environment—such as weather, climate change, water shortages, and droughts—appear in rural journalists' stories given those topics' relevance to their rural communities and the social systems forces exerting influence on journalists, yet rural journalists often do not perceive themselves as doing environmental reporting. Rural journalists also report lacking training and resources to do environmental reporting. The study was conducted in 2022 in shallow wells and deep boreholes owned by residents, to investigate the water quality status in the emerging developing area of Dodoma Urban municipality in central Tanzania. Eighteen boreholes and five shallow wells were assessed using the water quality index (WQI), the inverse distance weighting (IDW) method under the ArcGIS environment, and the Euclidean similarity index. The WQI classified the water samples into a good category class with a covered area of 42.5% and an excellent category class with a covered area of 57.5%, indicating that most of the deep boreholes and shallow wells were suitable for residential purposes. The IDW revealed the spatial distribution of the physico-chemical parameters and WQI, indicating that water quality improved from west to east within the study area. Yet, the Euclidean similarity index was dominated by nitrates, pH and heavy metals, with the highest correlation coefficients. Despite the WQI being above the average class, water treatment technologies should be practiced to lower those values of physico-chemical parameters existing above the threshold limits. Nitrate (NO3−) is a vulnerable natural contaminant that can be found in groundwater. The estimated nitrate concentrations for four categories of wells in the northeastern arid regions of Saudi Arabia—commercial treated water stations for drinking, commercial stations of untreated water for domestic uses, private wells of residences for households, and private wells for agricultural uses—were found to be in the 16–380 mg/L range. Drinking water from all commercial treated water stations has lower nitrate levels, based on the WHO standard of 50 mg/L. In contrast, almost 33% of commercial stations with untreated water (used only for domestic purposes) in the studied areas had higher nitrate levels that were unsuitable for drinking. Approximately half of the private wells of residences and wells for agricultural uses had very high nitrate levels. They can be considered unsuitable for drinking due to excessive levels of nitrates but can be used for domestic and agricultural purposes. Thus, adopting specific strategies to reduce nitrate levels in public wells in the studied areas is crucial. The data obtained in the present study are essential for equipping decision-makers with valuable insights, allowing them to enact appropriate measures, as needed, and uphold community health in the studied regions. Knowledge and implications of atrazine in waters from rural areas in Nigeria remain diminutive. Meanwhile, recent findings have shown presence of atrazine residue in water bodies. Atrazine level in six communities (Mamu, Oru, Ilaporu, Awa, Ijebu Igbo, and Ago-Iwoye) of Ijebu North local government, Ogun State, Nigeria using 69 hand-dug wells (HDWs), 40 boreholes (BHs) and four streams are monitored. Value of atrazine recorded was employed to appraise the implication on some hematological and biochemical parameters in relation to human health through dermal and ingestion contact using male albino rats. Highest atrazine of 0.08 mg/L was found in HDW of Ago-Iwoye out of 41 hand dug wells assessed, alongside 22 BH and four streams tested positive to atrazine, while the Oru documented lowest concentration with 0.01 mg/L. Ingestion and dermal hazard index (HI) were lower in adults than children and below acceptable limits in each community. Atrazine concentration at 0.01, 0.03, 0.04, and 0.08 mg/L in waters may not induce significant alteration in the hematological and some biochemical parameters of the exposed animal, while concentration at 0.04 and 0.08 mg/L might alter the blood glucose, albumin, and bilirubin. The issues associated with long‐screened wells (LSWs) (and open boreholes) at contaminated sites are well documented in the groundwater literature but are still not fully appreciated in practice. As established in seminal and review papers going back over three decades, the interpretation of sampling results from LSWs is challenging in the presence of vertical hydraulic gradients and borehole flow; furthermore, LSWs allow for vertical redistribution of contamination between aquifer layers. Acknowledgment of these issues has led to the development of new technologies and well designs to enable discrete‐zone monitoring (DZM), yet LSWs remain common for many reasons, for example, as multipurpose wells, for geophysical logging, and (or) as legacy installations. Despite the literature on LSWs and despite the adoption of DZM at many sites, the use of LSWs persists and the challenges of interpreting sampling results from LSWs remain. In this issue paper, we provide a conceptual overview of the problems posed by LSWs and review existing literature and past work to improve the interpretation of sampling in LSWs. We draw on experience from previous studies at the Hanford Site in eastern WA, USA, and use synthetic examples to illustrate key concepts and challenges for interpretation. A recently published analytical modeling framework is used to develop illustrative synthetic examples and demonstrate a workflow for building scientific intuition to understand issues around interpreting samples from LSWs, which is critical to effective characterization and groundwater remediation at sites with LSWs. Mountains have a critical role in freshwater supply for downstream populations. As the climate changes, groundwater stored in mountains may help buffer the impacts to declining water resources caused by decreased snowpack and glacier recession. However, given the scarcity of groundwater observation wells in mountain regions, it remains unclear how mountain groundwater is being impacted by climate change across ecoregions. This study quantifies temporal trends in mountain groundwater levels and explores how various climatic, physiographic and anthropogenic factors affect these trends. We compiled data from 171 public groundwater observation wells within mountain regions across Canada and the United States, for which at least 20 years of monthly data is available. The Mann‐Kendall test for monotonic trend revealed that 54% of these wells have statistically significant temporal trends (p < 0.05) over the period of record, of which 69% were negative and therefore indicating overall declining groundwater storage. Wells in the western mountain ranges showed stronger trends (both positive and negative) than the eastern mountain ranges, and higher elevation wells showed fewer negative trends than the low elevation (<400 m asl) wells (p < 0.05). Correlation, Kruskal‐Wallis tests, stepwise multiple linear regression and random forest regression were used to identify factors controlling groundwater trends. Statistical analysis revealed that lower‐elevation mountain regions with higher average annual temperatures and lower average annual precipitation have the greatest declines in groundwater storage under climate change. Trends in temperature and precipitation, and ecoregion were also important predictors on groundwater level trends, highlighting geographic differences in how mountain wells are responding to climate change. Furthermore, sedimentary bedrock aquifers showed markedly more negative trends than crystalline bedrock aquifers. Groundwater accounting is becoming increasingly important for sustainable societal development. To gain insights into the long-term spatiotemporal changes from 1992 to 2015 regarding groundwater resources in Kumamoto, southern Japan, we analyzed climatological time series, discharge from the groundwater-fed lake (Ezu Lake), and groundwater levels from 94 wells. To explicitly detect temporal changes in these variables and assess potential drivers of change, we used three different trend analyses: the Mann-Kendall Test (MKT), Seasonal Mann-Kendall Test (SMKT), and Innovative Trend Analysis (ITA). Our results revealed a consistently increasing trend in monthly mean temperature, monthly total precipitation, and maximum hourly rainfall. However, a decreasing trend was detected for the discharge rate from the Ezu Lake from 1992 to 2015. Among the 94 investigated groundwater wells, 64 wells showed an upward trend (p ≤ 0.05), while 23 wells showed a downward trend (p ≤ 0.05) for groundwater level. The observed decline in groundwater level is related to the decline in Ezu Lake discharge. However, the increase for the majority of groundwater wells is related to the increased precipitation and applied artificial groundwater recharge as well as a decrease in the groundwater abstraction rate. The ITA outperformed both SMKT and MKT, particularly in detecting minor variations in hydrological time-series data. The results and approach presented in this study can provide a scientific basis for improve groundwater accounting and water resources management in Kumamoto area and other regions with similar climate and socioeconomic conditions. Effective assessment and management of groundwater quality are essential for safeguarding the integrity of freshwater resources. Cooch Behar Municipality of West Bengal has been chosen for the present study due to its reliance primarily on groundwater for drinking water. The study focuses on assessing groundwater quality in the study area, a planned city with a long history of urbanization. The primary objective is to analyze various parameters relevant to drinking water and compute the Water Quality Index (WQI) with the residents' perception. Forty water samples were collected from Cooch Behar Municipality's Public Health Engineering (PHE) department, encompassing all 20 wards. Each ward provided one sample from a Deep Tube Well (DTW) and a Shallow Tube Well (STW). EC, Fe, TH, Mn, pH, TDS, Turbidity, Ca, and Mg levels were determined using standard instruments and methods, and analyzed geospatial techniques and statistical methods were employed. Results revealed concerning levels of manganese (Mn) and total hardness (TH), exceeding permissible limits in 82.5% and 75% of samples, respectively. While some parameters remained within acceptable limits, computed WQI values ranged from 63.28 to 162.67, indicating significant overall water quality concerns. Alarmingly, 45% of samples were unsuitable for drinking, with an additional 40% classified as very poor. Notably, demographic factors such as household income and education level correlated with perceptions of poor water quality. Simple Summary: In Texas beef markets, the expansion of ethanol production has increased the demand for and utilization of biofuel co-products, like dried distiller grains with solubles, introducing highly variable concentrations of nutrients, such as sulfur, known to impact cattle health. The risk of sulfur toxicity for Texas cattle was estimated using two mathematical nutrition models at two production stages across twelve geographic districts. The assessment identified cattle raised in the South Plains region of northwest Texas as the most susceptible to sulfur toxicity, with those in the finishing production stage being more sensitive. Results also highlighted feed ingredients and water wells by district that significantly contributed to the risk of sulfur toxicity. This research further helps better manage the risk of sulfur toxicity by providing tools translatable nationwide that properly balance beef diets and calculate anticipated sulfur exposure. The purpose of this probabilistic assessment was to estimate the risk of sulfur-induced polioencephalomalacia (S-PEM) for beef raised across Texas, from a dietary perspective. Ruminant nutritionists in Amarillo, TX, formulated two typical nutritional regimens based on cattle production stages, each containing six feed ingredients and well water. The Office of the Texas State Chemist (OTSC), National Research Council (NRC), and the published literature provided S data for feed ingredients. The Texas Water Development Board provided data for S content in Texas well water, categorized into twelve districts established by the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Extension Service. The S-PEM risk was estimated at five different eNDF levels ranging from 0% to 8% in 2% increments, using rumen degradable S (RDS) as an input value. Findings identified cattle raised in the South Plains district as the most susceptible population to S toxicity, with beef in the finishing production stage experiencing increased sensitivity. The most potential (MP) risk scenario suggested that the S-PEM risk could reach 28.5% for growers and 100% for finishers. Results further revealed that when S concentrations in well water exceeded 14.5 mg/L, water became the greatest contributor to RDS content for Texas beef, suggesting that high S content in well water is the most prominent concern for Texas beef. Groundwater is a valuable and universally distributed resource on Earth. Understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of groundwater is of utmost importance for effective management. Normally, groundwater levels are recorded at arbitrary points, but groundwater modeling requires interpolating the measured values at specific grid nodes. This study aims to dentify and evaluate the geographical variations of groundwater levels in Türkiye using three geostatistical interpolation techniques. Data from 355 groundwater wells from 1970 to 2019 were used for this purpose. In addition, an investigation of changes in annual average temperature and precipitation was conducted for two different time periods: 1985–2000 and 2001–2016. The results show an increase in the annual average temperature in Türkiye by 0.82 °C during the reference period (1985–2000). Despite regional differences in the precipitation regime, the average annual precipitation in Türkiye has not changed significantly overall. Especially in the Meriç-Ergene, Konya Closed (Konya Kapalı), and Euphrates-Tigris basins, a significant decrease in groundwater levels was observed, even though this decrease is less than 100 m in some wells. The confined aquifer dewatering for long-deep excavations usually encounters challenges due to complicated geotechnical conditions, large excavation sizes, and high hydraulic pressures. To propose the most efficient scheme of confined aquifer dewatering for long-deep excavations, dewatering optimizations were performed using the simulation–optimization method. An open cut tunnel of the JiangyinJingjiang Yangtze River Tunnel Project was taken as an example. The methods of finite element and linear programming (LP) were combined to optimize the dewatering process. A three-dimensional finite element model was developed. After simulating the pumping tests, hydraulic conductivity was inverted. Then, necessary parameters in the LP method were determined by simulating dewatering with each pumping well, and various LP models were developed based on some important influence factors such as dewatering sequence, considered pumping wells, and pumping rate limitation. Finally, the optimal pumping rates were solved and applied to the numerical model, with induced drawdown and ground settlement computed for comparison. The results indicate that the optimization can significantly reduce the required wells in the original design. Dewatering in the deepest zone exhibits the highest efficiency for long-deep excavations with gradually varying depths. For the dewatering sequence from the shallowest to the deepest zone, more pumping wells are required but less energy is consumed. Higher quantity and more advantageous locations of pumping wells in the LP model usually result in lower total pumping rate, drawdown, and ground settlement. If more pumping wells are considered in the deepest zone, pumping rate limitation of single well will only slightly increase the total pumping rate, number of required pumping wells, drawdown, and ground settlement. Both rural and urban parts of the world, groundwater is an essential reservoir of freshwater Due to drainage and consequently rising pollution are a serious risk to the planet's ability to provide safe water supplies. For both health and medical practitioners, water that has been polluted by heavy metals-specifically, the elements cadmium, arsenic, nickel, copper, lead, manganese, and mercury-is developing a serious health risk. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the amount of heavy metals in the groundwater of the Kanker district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh's Northern Bastar region. In the premonsoon period in May-June of the study region, samples were taken using manually operated pumps, tube wells, and dug wells at 15 distinct locations. The amount of each element, including Pb, Mn, Zn, and Fe, was measured with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) and the appropriate digestion technique. The water samples had mean concentrations of metallic elements in an order: Fe>Pb>Zn>Mn. The outcome of this study was that the extent of accumulation of heavy metals in water samples is significantly greater than the recommended limitation, indicating that residents and the environment around them may be at risk. This study investigated the radioactivity of groundwater and bottom silt from wells in southern Sinai, Egypt. Eight well sites were chosen (Abu Redis, Abu Zenima, and Al-Tor) and composite samples of water and silt were created from each. Southern Sinai well water (Egypt) was safe for drinking based on tested elements (226Ra < 300 Bq/L, 232Th < 100 Bq/L). However, some bottom silt samples showed elevated 226Ra, 232Th, and 222Rn-, potentially posing health risks through inhalation or ingestion. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the extent to which the systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII) is associated with patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE), compare the SII with other commonly used biomarkers and scoring systems, and evaluate its suitability for routine use in PE risk classification. Materials and Methods: Patients with acute PE admitted in 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. A cut-off value for the SII was obtained to examine the predictive value of the SII for 30-day mortality as the primary outcome. The secondary outcome of the study was to compare the SII with other predictors of 30-day mortality in patients with acute PE. Results: A total of 139 patients with a mean age of 68.33±14.58 years were included in the study. The cut-off value for 30-day mortality was an SII of =0.904 (sensitivity: 88.5%; specificity: 58.4%; area under the curve: 0.803; p<0.001). Lactate, age, right ventricular dysfunction (RVD), and SII =0.904 were independent risk factors for 30-day mortality in PE (p<0.05). The SII has a strong correlation with lactate and the presence of RVD (p<0.001). Conclusion: The SII was found to be strongly associated with RVD, age, and lactate in patients with acute PE. Prospective studies may prove that the SII can fill the gap of inexpensive, rapid, and accessible prognostic biomarkers in rural emergency departments where echocardiography is not accessible. Deep carbonate gas reservoirs exhibit diverse reservoir types and complex seepage patterns. To study the gas production capabilities of different composite reservoir types, we classified the reservoirs of the fourth member of the Dengying Formation in the Anyue Gas Field into high-quality reservoirs (HRs) and poor-quality reservoirs (PRs) based on high-pressure mercury injection (HPMI) experiment results. By varying the differential pressure of the depletion experiment and the connection method, as well as the permeability and water saturation of the composite core, the effects of well location deployment, permeability ratio of the high-quality reservoir and poor-quality reservoir (PRHPR), gas well production pressure difference (GWPPD), and water saturation on the depletion gas production characteristics of the composite reservoir were studied. The research results show that (1) deploying wells on HR enables high gas production rates and ultimate recovery rates; (2) only when the PRHPR falls within a reasonable range (21.88–43.19) can the "dynamic recharge" capability of PR and the high permeability of HR be coordinated to achieve high gas recovery rates; (3) a GWPPD of 3 MPa is optimal, resulting in fast gas production rates and high ultimate recovery rates for PR; (4) high water saturation (≥50%) leads to premature water breakthrough at the well bottom, decreased gas production rate, and sealing of HR and PR reserves by formation water. Combining experimental results with field production data is our next research focus. Our future research focus will be on integrating experimental results with field production data to provide solid theoretical support for the efficient development of this type of gas reservoir. Groundwater is the main source of drinking water for the rural population in the chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) zone of the North Central Province (NCP) in Sri Lanka. In this study, a total of 334 groundwater samples (311 dug wells, 21 tube wells and 2 springs) during the wet season from two aquifers in the NCP were collected, and investigated their chemical characteristics and evaluate their water quality, including groundwater chemistry, main ion sources, the corrosion and scaling potential of groundwater. The results showed that the two hydrochemical types of groundwater in the NCP were mainly of the Ca-HCO 3 , Na·Ca-HCO 3 types, with the main HCO 3 −, Na+ and Ca2+ ions in both types of groundwater originating from silicate and evaporite salt dissolution and influenced by alternating cation adsorption, while the presence of NO 3 − was mainly anthropogenic. Evaluation of water stability using namely Langelier saturation index (LSI), Ryznar stability index (RSI), Puckorius scaling index (PSI) and Larson-Skold index (LS), indicated that most groundwater presents corrosion potential and has corrosion behavior tendency of metals to some degrees. The water quality of Polonnaruwa was better than that of Anuradhapura in the NCP, and when the groundwater was worse than the "good" grade, which must be properly treated before it is used as drinking water. Underground water were abstracted from HDWs to determine their suitability for drinking. Physical, chemical and bacteriological parameters were carried out following standard guidelines. Total coliform count was done using the membrane filtration method. Heavy metal was determined using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS BULK SCIENTIFIC MODEL 210 VGP). Samples were subjected to statistical and multivariate analysis. Results of physicochemical parameters show that they were all within the WHO standard for drinking. Cation concentrations follow the order: Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > K+, while anions are: HCO3− > SO42-> Cl−> NO3− > PO42-. As, Cd and Pb were not detected in the sampled water, but other heavy metals Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn were detected. They were, however, within the WHO's recommended range. Based on E. coli analysed, all of the water samples were free from faecal contamination since none was discovered in the water samples. Based on the water quality index, only sample G hand-dug well is of poor quality (though it could be treated) for human consumption; all other samples are good for human consumption. Deductions from Pipers' and the Durov diagram, as well as principal component analysis, revealed that there was little geological and human activity within the hand-dug wells. Based on the physicochemical, microbiological, heavy metal and water quality indexes, this study indicates that all of the water samples examined are free of pollution, but that continual monitoring of the hand-dug wells should be prioritised. Arsenic contamination in groundwater of Bengal basin was first reported in early 80s. Even after two decades of extensive research, our ability to pinpoint the arsenic-free sources, with precision, is limited. Proxies as indicator of arsenic concentration in groundwater are also lacking. It is imperative to formulate some cost-effective, user-friendly screening tool for the detection of arsenic safe wells. The present study utilises validation tests, colourimetry and statistics, to validate the platform colour hypothesis. Results show that red-stained platforms can identify arsenic-contaminated wells with 83% certainty; while black-stained platforms identify arsenic safe wells with 62% certainty, 78% sensitivity and 69% specificity. Black-coloured well platforms identify manganese-contaminated wells with 96% certainty; while red-stained well platforms mark manganese safe wells with 36% certainty and 93% specificity. The performances of such tests improve with increasing prevalence. A comprehensive colour chart thus prepared can be used as handy tool for identification of arsenic-contaminated wells. Groundwater flow systems are influenced by the changes in surface waters as well as climatic factors. These teleconnections significantly increase in cases of extreme weather conditions. To prepare and mitigate the effect of such phenomena, the background factors that create and influence natural processes must be recognized. In the present study, 94 shallow groundwater (SGW) wells' water level time series were analyzed in the inner delta of the River Danube (Europe) the Szigetköz region to explore which factors contribute to the development of diurnal periodicity of SGW and what its drivers are. The relationship between surface meteorological processes and SGW dynamics in the Szigetköz region was investigated using hourly data from monitoring wells. Hourly water temperature data exhibited weak correlations with meteorological parameters. However, daily averaged data revealed stronger correlations, particularly between SGW levels and air temperature and potential evapotranspiration. Diurnal periodicity in SGW fluctuations correlated strongly with potential evapotranspiration. The study also demonstrated the role of capillary fringe dynamics in linking surface evapotranspiration with SGW fluctuations. Changes in groundwater levels, even small, can significantly affect soil moisture, vegetation, and ecosystem functioning, highlighting the sensitivity of the unsaturated zone to SGW fluctuations driven by surface processes. This study examined how socio-economic driving forces influence households' choice of water, ranging from a piped water supply provided by Veolia to untreated sources contaminated with high levels of arsenic and pathogens. Households fall into three cluster groups based on variations in socio-economic status and physical, infrastructure, and institutional elements. About 64% of the variations are related to differences in awareness, willingness, and ability to pay for safe water sources. Families with higher monthly income showed interest in accepting Veolia's house connection options, resulting in the shutdown of six community tap points and ultimately affecting the low-income households' accessibility to Veolia water. A causal loop diagram showed five feedback loops influencing the choice of drinking contaminated water. Bayesian Network models were sensitive to the ability, accessibility, and willingness to pay for safe water, deep tube well distributions, installation and maintenance costs, ownership of tube wells, household income level, and the level of awareness. Results suggest that the risks of drinking contaminated water can be minimized by raising awareness; accepting arsenic removal techniques; sharing expenses; training for deep tube well installations and maintenance; increasing Veolia pipeline coverage; and redesigning the tap point distributions. OBJECTIVE We examined the association of arsenic in federally regulated community water systems (CWS) and unregulated private wells with type 2 diabetes (T2D) incidence in the Strong Heart Family Study (SHFS), a prospective study of American Indian communities, and the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), a prospective study of racially and ethnically diverse urban U.S. communities. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS We evaluated 1,791 participants from SHFS and 5,777 participants from MESA who had water arsenic estimates available and were free of T2D at baseline (2001-2003 and 2000-2002, respectively). Participants were followed for incident T2D until 2010 (SHFS cohort) or 2019 (MESA cohort). We used Cox proportional hazards mixed-effects models to account for clustering by family and residential zip code, with adjustment for sex, baseline age, BMI, smoking status, and education. RESULTS T2D incidence was 24.4 cases per 1,000 person-years (mean follow-up, 5.6 years) in SHFS and 11.2 per 1,000 person-years (mean follow-up, 14.0 years) in MESA. In a meta-analysis across the SHFS and MESA cohorts, the hazard ratio (95% CI) per doubling in CWS arsenic was 1.10 (1.02, 1.18). The corresponding hazard ratio was 1.09 (0.95, 1.26) in the SHFS group and 1.10 (1.01, 1.20) in the MESA group. The corresponding hazard ratio (95% CI) for arsenic in private wells and incident T2D in SHFS was 1.05 (0.95, 1.16). We observed statistical interaction and larger magnitude hazard ratios for participants with BMI <25 kg/m² and female participants. Introduction: Water is one of the important natural resources available for mankind for its survival. In rural Karnataka, there are 1,182,990 wells, out of which 131,305 are covered wells, and 1,051,685 are uncovered. This highlights the threat to safe and potable drinking water. Aim: To assess the physical, chemical, and microbiological qualities of well water situated in the field practice area of Mangaluru, Karnataka, India. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the year 2019, between July and August, in the rural area of Kinya Panchayat, Ullal Taluk, Dakshina Kannada District. This area serves as the field practice area of Yenepoya Nursing College, Yenepoya deemed to be University. This pilot project was a time-bound study, and all twenty wells available were conveniently included in the study and comprised dug and ring residential and government wells utilised by residents for drinking and domestic purposes. Water collection followed World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines. Baseline data included the age of the wells, colour, odour, and chlorination of the well water. Chemical parameters such as pH levels and bacteriological assessments to identify the presence of Escherichia coli, H2S, and Most Probable Number (MPN) bacterial counts were conducted using laboratory tests. Results: The colour of all 20 (100%) well water sources met WHO standards. The water was odourless in all 20 (100%) sources. The mean age of the wells was five years. The majority, 17 (85%) of the wells, were never chlorinated. Moreover, 17 (85%) of the well water sources had a pH level of ≤7, while 3 (15%) had a pH level of >7. E. coli bacteria were present in three-fourths of the well water (17 wells, 85%). No other organisms were found during testing. Ten (50%) of the well water sources had a bacterial count of 351-550 MPN {Most Probable Number (MPN) of bacteria} per 100 mL, 7 (35%) had a count of 151-350 MPN per 100 mL, and 3 (15%) had a count of less than or equal to 150 MPN per 100 mL. The results indicate that 17 (85%) of the wells’ water was not satisfactory for potable purposes, while 3 (15%) were deemed satisfactory. Conclusion: Water sources in the studied area were found to be contaminated, with most of the well water sources not meeting satisfactory potable standards. This underscores the importance of raising awareness, implementing routine monitoring, and conducting consistent and periodic examinations of drinking water, as well as disinfection processes, to address this issue. A static batch test was used to determine the optimal ratio of Fenton’s reagent for removing benzene and toluene from contaminated subsurface at a site, followed by a two-dimensional simulation tank experiment, where benzene and toluene were distributed throughout the tank, and then in the groundwater circulation wells. The Fenton’s reagent of 0.05 L of 3% H2O2 and 6.12 g of FeSO4·7H2O was added in the ratio of 0.05 L of 3% H2O2 and 6.12 g of FeSO4·7H2O, and the reactive circulation wells were initiated at an aeration rate of 15 L/min.The results show:The groundwater circulation close to the circulation wells is highly disturbed, the mass transfer between the gas and water phases is strong, benzene and toluene are preferentially removed, and a remediation area centered on the circulation wells is gradually formed; after 12 h of cumulative aeration, contaminants within a 50 cm radius from the circulation well were below the detection limit. Residual benzene and toluene were concentrated in the area on both sides of the simulation tank, away from the circulation well. The contaminant removal efficiency within the 50-cm radius of influence of the circulation wells was high, and the enhanced remediation of benzene- and toluene-contaminated groundwater by reactive circulation wells using Fenton’s reagent as the remediation agent was more effective. Attributing the sources of legacy contamination, including brines, is important to determine remediation options and to allocate responsibility. To make sound remediation decisions, it is necessary to distinguish subsurface sources, such as leaking oil and gas ("O&G") wells or natural upward fluid migrations, from surface releases. While chemical signatures of surface and subsurface releases may be similar, they are expected to imprint specific dissolved noble gas signatures, caused by the accumulation of terrigenic noble gases in subsurface leaks or re‐equilibration of noble gases following surface releases. We demonstrate that only a historic surface release influenced the dissolved noble gas signature of groundwater in monitoring wells contaminated with brine near an abandoned O&G well, rather than subsurface leakage from the well. Elevated brine concentrations were associated with lower terrigenic helium concentrations, indicating re‐equilibration with atmospheric helium at the surface during the release. Geophysical surveying indicating elevated salinity in surficial soils upgradient of the wells further supported the interpretation of the noble gas data. Eliminating the possibility that subsurface leakage was the source of the plume was critical to selecting the proper remedial action at the site, which otherwise may have included an unnecessary and costly well re‐abandonment. This study demonstrates the use of noble gas analysis to compare potential sources of brine contamination in groundwater and to exclude subsurface leakage as a potential source in an oilfield. Coastal aquifers are complex systems governed by fresh–saline water interactions and ocean tidal effects. The vertical electrical conductivity (EC) and temperature (T) are general indicators for detecting the fresh–saline water interface (FSI) and sea water intrusion in groundwater wells located in coastal aquifers. In this method brief, we developed a cost‐effective Arduino‐based automatic‐vertical profile monitoring system (A‐VPMS) to continuously record vertical EC and T in groundwater wells, with the aim of testing its effectiveness in spatiotemporal monitoring of the FSI in a coastal aquifer located in eastern Korea. By analyzing the high‐density EC and T data obtained by the A‐VPMS, we evaluated the characteristics of the FSI, such as depth and spatial distribution. Our established EC and T data collection method using the A‐VPMS proved to be efficient and reliable, providing an excellent tool for fine‐scale temporal and spatial understanding of sea water intrusion. The results of this study demonstrate the potential of the A‐VPMS for continuous monitoring of the FSI in coastal aquifers, which is crucial for sustainable management of groundwater resources. The deposition of fine‐grained material of low permeability on the borehole wall during drilling (wellbore skin) is a common problem affecting the operation and efficiency of water wells. Here, we present new data and novel insights from four excavated dewatering wells from a lignite surface mine. All wells have the same age, are of similar construction, and were sampled at two different depths each. The thickness of the skin layer increases with depth. Its composition and permeability is strongly influenced by the surrounding aquifer material. Nonuniform sediments of low permeability result in less permeable wellbore skin deposits. The presence of discontinuities in the skin layer may be a determining feature for the resulting flow to wells, especially with skin layers of low permeability. The presence of naturally occurring swelling clay (smectite) provides the skin layer with a significant self‐sealing capacity. The separate sewer system has led to severe river pollution because of domestic sewage infiltrations and initial rainfall pollution. Therefore, interception wells (IWs) are installed to divert sewage to the wastewater treatment plant but similarly contribute to overflow-induced river pollution on rainy days. The aim of the present study is to propose a control strategy for the regulation of IWs' overflow based on the online monitoring data, control measures, and software simulation. The results indicate that during light rain, overflow from the IWs is minimal, requiring no control measures. However during heavy rainfall, the overflow of sewage leads to an increase in the river's concentration of NH3-N from 0.25 to 3.04 mg/L. Finally, Simulations demonstrate a reduction in river NH3-N levels from 2.27 to 1.33 mg/L after implementation. This paper proposes a methodology for managing groundwater monitoring directly in the field through a specific data entry system installed on mobile devices and a relational geographic database that allows the visualization and querying of data via a specific web interface. The study area is the city of Rome, where a monitoring system of approximately 150 piezometers and wells, currently manually monitored twice a year. The proposed method uses the Enterprise cloud platform (ESRI, 2024) managed by ISPRA-SNPA, which guarantees the repository of the data collected in an online cloud system and the use of Web applications. The data of the time series of levels and chemical-physical parameters such as temperature, pH, conductivity are freely accessible through attribute tables, graphs, and viewer elements. The results highlight numerous possibilities for expanding the network of active wells, enabling the use of groundwater resources for adaptation measures to address ongoing climate change. Tidal freshwater forests are usually located at or above the level of mean high water. Some Louisiana coastal forests are below mean high water, especially bald cypress (Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich.) forests because flooding has increased due to the combined effects of global sea level rise and local subsidence. In addition, constructed channels from the coast inland act as conduits for saltwater. As a result, saltwater intrusion affects the productivity of Louisiana's coastal bald cypress forests. To study the long-term effects of hydrology and salinity on the health of these systems, we fitted dendrometer bands on selected trees to record basal area increment as a measure of growth in permanent forest productivity plots established within six bald cypress stands. Three stands were in freshwater sites with low salinity rooting zone groundwater (0.1–1.3 ppt), while the other three had higher salinity rooting zone groundwater (0.2–4.9 ppt). Water level was logged continuously, and salinity was measured monthly to quarterly on the surface and in groundwater wells. Higher groundwater salinity levels were related to decreased bald cypress radial growth, while higher freshwater flooding increased radial growth. Purpose. Increasing oil recovery from deposits and reducing the water content of producing wells by providing conditions for uniform displacement of oil from the reservoir under the influence of high reservoir pressure. Methodology. The purpose of the work is achieved by conducting theoretical and experimental studies of the process of creating high elastic energy in the formation by pumping water with injection well pumps to overcome the resistance of oil and water filtration through the pores of the rock and oil rise at the mouth of producing wells. The absence of pumps from producing wells and the acceptance of equal amounts of injection and production wells over the reservoir area significantly increases the reservoir pressure above the pressure of oil saturation with gas. Due to the significant elasticity of the rock and fluids under high reservoir pressure, the oil coverage with water increases and there is no premature breakthrough of water into producing wells. The possibility of creating high elastic energy in an oil reservoir by pumping water into injection wells has been experimentally studied. Findings. It has been established that high reservoir energy in the field of elastic deformation of rock and fluids can be created mainly by pumps from injection wells, due to which oil is uniformly displaced from the reservoir along the entire front without breaking through the injected water into producing wells along the path of least resistance. The adoption of equal amounts of producing and injection wells and their sequential arrangement in rows contributes to the development of high potential energy in the reservoir and increase the pick-up rate of injection and production wells. As a result, the skeleton of the rock forming the pores expands, and the water injected into the reservoir and the displaced oil accumulate and increase reservoir energy. Originality. The effectiveness of the proposed method for maintaining high reservoir pressure is achieved as a result of creating high energy of rock and fluids in the area of their elastic deflation and increasing the coverage coefficients of oil displaced by water over the area and profile of the productive formation without the use of additional capacities and pumping units from producing wells. Practical value. The developed new technique for maintaining high elastic reservoir pressure not lower than the pressure of oil saturation with gas by pumping water into the reservoir can be carried out in oil fields using standard technological equipment and increase oil recovery to 60–70 % at its existing values of 40–45 % and reduce the water content of produced oil to 0–10 % at its existing values of 20–80 % and above. To avoid or mitigate the unwanted water and gas content, inflow control devices (ICDs) are designed and installed in the well to disturb the water and gas breakthrough which are trying to overtake the oil inflow, water and gas coning and sand production. Smart wells with permanent downhole valves such as ICDs are used to balance production and injection in wells. A paramount issue regarding using downhole control devices is determining the required cross-sectional area of them for control of the imposed pressure drop across the device to stabilize the fluid flow. Current methods for calculating the opening size of the ICDs are mainly based on sensitivity analysis of the ICD flow area or optimization algorithms coupled with simulation models. Although these approaches are quite effective in oil field cases, they tend to be time-consuming and require demanding system models. This paper presents a fast analytical method to determine the ICD flow area validated by a genetic algorithm (GA). Analytically, a closed-form expression is introduced by manipulating Darcy's law applicable to multi-layer injection wells with different layer properties to balance the injection profile in the reservoir pay zone, based on equalizing injected front velocity in layers with different permeability. Considering various scenarios of analytical technique, GA optimization, and sensitivity analysis scenarios for ICD cross-sectional area determination, results for oil recovery, water production, water breakthrough time, and net present value (NPV) are discussed and compared. NPV values obtained by both analytical and GA approaches are virtually identical and greater than those of other scenarios. Compared to the base field case, the analytical method improved the oil recovery by almost 1%, reduced water production by almost 91%, and synchronized the water breakthrough time of high- and low-permeability layers (from a ratio of 1.76–1.06). The proposed analytical solution proved to be capable of providing desirable results with only one reservoir simulation run in contrast to GA and sensitivity analysis scenarios which require iterative simulation runs. The proposed analytical solution outperformed the GA as it is less computationally demanding in addition to its success in case of lowering water production for the field data. The findings of this study can help for a better understanding of the situation where water injection into the oil reservoir is problematic as the layers present different permeabilities which can induce problems such as early water breakthrough from the more permeable layer and hinder the success of the water injection process. Using ICDs and a faster and more accurate approach to calculate its cross-sectional area such as the analytical method that was used in this study can greatly increase the success rate of water injection in case of oil recovery and lower the amount of the produced water. In recent times, drilling groundwater wells for irrigation, domestic, and industrial uses is increasing at a high rate in Saudi Arabia, meaning that groundwater is becoming a primary water resource. In the study region, over-exploitation and unsustainable performance severely deteriorate groundwater. Therefore, it is important to monitor the groundwater levels and quality as well as to detect the hydraulic parameters in order to plan and maintain groundwater sustainability. Knowledge of aquifer hydraulic parameters and groundwater quality is essential for the productivity planning of an aquifer. Therefore, this study carried out a thorough analysis on measured depth to groundwater data (2017 and 2022), borehole pumping test records, and chemical analysis of the collected water samples, especially in the presence of overexploitation and scarcity of recharge scale. To accomplish this aim, measurements of 113 groundwater wells (including 103 water samples) and analysis of 29 pumping tests between step and long-duration tests were made of all aquifer characteristics. These parameters consist of well loss, formation loss, well efficiency, specific capacity, transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity, resulted drawdown, and physiochemical parameters. Thematic maps were generated for all parameters using the geographic information system (GIS) and diagrams to strategize the groundwater productivity in Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah Province. The estimated hydraulic parameters are highly variable. Four distinct portions were identified for aquifer potentiality based on these varying ranges. Both the north and east of the region are good for groundwater productivity due to good aquifer materials, whereas the southwestern and western portions have relatively poor values. The analyzed groundwater was categorized as fresh to slightly salty water, with two primary chemical types identified showing a prevalence of mixed NaCl and Ca-Mg-SO4/Cl water. Finally, groundwater productivity assessment predicts that the aquifers can support the Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah Province demand for several years if certain well distributions are adopted and for a few hours/day of pumping rate. In practical oilfield production, the phenomenon of water influx typically shortens the water-free recovery period of wells, leading to water flooding and causing a sharp decline in the production well yields, bringing great harm to production. Water invasion usually occurs as a result of the elastic expansion of the water as well as the compaction of the aquifer pore space. However, it can be due to the special characteristics of fractured-vuggy reservoirs such as non-homogeneity and the discrete distribution of the pore spaces. It is challenging to use traditional seepage flow theories to analyze the characteristics of water influx. Also, reservoir numerical simulation methods require numerous parameters which are difficult to obtain, which significantly reduces the accuracy of the results. In this study, considering the driving energy for water influx, a water influx characteristic model was obtained by fitting a graph plate. Subsequently, an iterative calculation method was used to simultaneously obtain water influx volume and OOIP. The aquifer to hydrocarbon ratio was determined by fitting the water influx curve with the graphic plate. Results show that the calculation method is sensitive to the values of reservoir pressure and the crude oil formation volume factor. After applying the method to one field case, it was discovered that water influx performance can be characterized into two types, i.e., linear water influx and logarithmic water influx. In the early stages, the water influx rate of logarithmic water influx is greater compared to linear water influx. However, the volume and energy of waterbody are limited, and the water invasion phenomenon occurs almost exclusively within a short period after the invasion. On the other hand, the volume of waterbody invaded by linear water influx is larger, and it can maintain a stable rate of water influx. The results of the study can provide theoretical support for the waterbody energy evaluation and dynamic analysis of water influx, as well as the control and management of water in these types of reservoirs. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations (UN), rise in atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) due to anthropogenic factors is considered as the primary driver for global climate change. With almost every major corporation around the world working towards their "net-zero goals", it is becoming increasingly important to have more technologies that can help reduce carbon footprint. Achieving sequestration of CO 2 in the subsurface through Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technologies like CO 2 -Enhanced Oil Recovery, CO 2 -Enhanced Geothermal Systems, CO 2 -Enhanced Coal Bed Methane, etc. is well accepted. We introduce yet another attractive CCUS opportunity through well rehabilitation. Aqua Freed® and Aqua Gard® are well-known well rehabilitation and preventive well maintenance technologies that utilize (inject underground) liquid CO 2 for the purpose. The goal of this study was to quantify the storage capacity of Aqua Freed® and Aqua Gard®, and establish their CCUS credentials. Depending on the well being serviced, these technologies can inject up to 40 US tons of CO 2 per well. Based on field data collection and statistical modeling, we estimated that 82–96% (median 90%) of the injected CO 2 remains in the subsurface post injection. Overall, our results and analysis of the US market suggest that using CO 2 for well rehabilitation and maintenance has a storage potential of several megatonnes of CO 2 annually in the US alone.
