Product packaging can serve as a medium that conveys information and concepts regarding its contents. Previous research showed that a product image (visual object) spatially located at the bottom of the package led consumers to evaluate the product to be visually heavier in comparison to an image located at the top of the package did. The present study investigated this location effect (or the bottom-heavy association) in both visual and haptic domains. I succeeded in replicating the location effect in the evaluation of the visual heaviness of a product (Study 1). A diminished but significant location effect was also demonstrated in the haptically perceived heaviness when participants lifted the product with their hands (Study 2). However, the preceding evaluation of the visual heaviness of the product disrupted (rather reversed) the bottom-heavy association in the subsequent heaviness perception of the lifted product (Study 3). When the product image was shown on the bottom of the package, participants perceived the lifted product to be lighter in comparison to when the product image was shown at the top. These results suggest that the psychological effects of packaging design are elicited not only by visual processing but also by visual-haptic integration and that they have bidirectional effects on the consumer’s processing strategy.

Our research team previously identified a weight illusion in which a lifted object feels heavy when it continuously presents a sinusoidal vibration to the fingertips. However, the mechanism underlying this illusion remains unknown. We thus hypothesized that the autonomous grip force adjustment against a vibrating object would be one of the factors underlying the weight illusion. The autonomous grip force adjustment increases the motor outputs of a human hand system, subsequently raising the sense of effort to keep holding the lifted object. The grip forces and perceived heaviness were evaluated using vibratory stimuli with five different frequencies (30 Hz, 60 Hz, 100 Hz, 200 Hz, and 300 Hz) and three different amplitudes (156 μ m, 177 μ m, and 203 μ m). The results showed that the stimuli at lower frequencies or large amplitudes increased the grip forces more and felt heavier than the stimuli at higher frequencies or small amplitudes. Specifically, the 30 Hz stimuli felt the heaviest and increased the grip force the most. An increase in the grip force was positively correlated with the perceived heaviness. These results indicate that vibratory stimuli influence both the grip force and weight perception. Our findings can contribute to developing haptic displays to present virtual heaviness. It is difficult for humans to perceive weight accurately, because the perception of weight is produced by the process of multisensory integration. This implies that, by manipulating certain factors, the weight of an object could be perceived differently from the actual weight. Here, the effects of vibration on weight perception were investigated using behavioral tests and questionnaires. As a behavioral test, from a number of identically appearing non-vibrating boxes of different weights, participants had to select a box that they perceived to be of the same weight as a vibrating box. They were also asked whether vibration affected the perceived weight of the box. Even though they reported that vibration created an illusion of weight, the results of the behavioral test did not show a statistically significant effect of vibration on perceived weight. Furthermore, we investigated how the frequency of vibration affected the illusion and found that the weight illusion requires smaller acceleration of vibration at lower frequencies, such as 30 Hz. The illusion was more intense at lower frequencies than at higher frequencies, such as 200 and 300 Hz. Thus, this study demonstrated that vibrotactile stimuli presented to the fingertips produce a weight illusion: vibrating objects are perceived to feel heavier. Even though the principles of this illusion are still unknown, the effect is concrete, and our approach allows easy implementation in virtual reality applications.

Recent research proposes that sensorimotor difficulties, such as those experienced by many autistic people, may arise from atypicalities in prediction. Accordingly, we examined the relationship between non-clinical autistic-like traits and sensorimotor prediction in the material-weight illusion, where prior expectations derived from material cues typically bias one's perception and action. Specifically, prediction-related tendencies in perception of weight, gaze patterns, and lifting actions were probed using a combination of self-report, eye-tracking, motion-capture, and force-based measures. No prediction-related associations between autistic-like traits and sensorimotor control emerged for any of these variables. Follow-up analyses, however, revealed that greater autistic-like traits were correlated with reduced adaptation of gaze with changes in environmental uncertainty. These findings challenge proposals of gross predictive atypicalities in autistic people, but suggest that the dynamic integration of prior information and environmental statistics may be related to autistic-like traits. Further research into this relationship is warranted in autistic populations, to assist the development of future movement-based coaching methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
