De weg biedt kansen om ondergrondse waterberging in (Druk) stedelijk gebied te realiseren als oplossing voor wateroverlast en droogte. Onderzoek in Zwolle blijkt na 25 jaar nog steeds te voldoen aan de oorspronkelijke opzet: water bergen en infiltreren binnen een dag.

Although in 2019 the local government of Tegal city Indonesia had constructed a retention basin at drainage system of Siwatu, Tegal Barat, Tegal city with a catchment area of 226 ha, the areas around the system still experienced flood and inundation. This study belonged to a descriptive qualitative research aimed to evaluate the performances of Siwatu drainage system and Tegalsari retention basin. Data of the study included field data and technical data from institutions. Based on the 15-year rainfall data (2014 – 2018) from Pemali - Comal PSDA Office, Central Java Province, Indonesia, the statistical parameters of Cs: 0.0027, Ck: 1.904, Sd: 15.91, Cv: 0.144 were obtained and so Gumbel method distribution was applied in the study, the return period rainfall of 10 years was 138 mm, the flood discharge for Qr.10 years was 9.63 m3/sec., the addition of long storage was 8×2,50×500 m, and the combination of pump addition was of 1 m3/sec. with the long storage of 8×2.00×500 m. By implementing one of the alternative choices, either flood or inundation could be resolved.

Large floating projects have the potential to overcome the challenge of land scarcity in urban areas and offer opportunities for energy and food production, or even for creating sustainable living environments. However, they influence the physical, chemical, biological and ecological characteristics of water bodies. The interaction of the floating platforms affect multiple complex aquatic processes, and the potential (negative/positive) effects are not yet fully understood. Managing entities currently struggle with lack of data and knowledge that can support adequate legislation to regulate future projects. In the Netherlands the development of small scale floating projects is already present for some years (e.g. floating houses, restaurants, houseboats), and more recently several large scale floating photovoltaic plants (FPV) have been realized. Several floating constructions in the Netherlands were considered as case-studies for a data-collection campaign. To obtain data and images from underneath floating buildings, underwater drones were equipped with cameras and sensors. The drones were used in multiple locations to scan for differences in concentrations of basic water quality parameters (e.g. dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, algae, light intensity) from underneath/near the floating structures, which were then compared with data from locations far from the influence of the buildings. Continuous data was also collected over several days using multi-parameter water quality sensors permanently installed under floating structures. Results show some differences in concentrations of water quality parameters between open water and shaded areas were detected, and some interesting relations between parameters and local characteristics were identified. Recommendations are given, in order to minimise the undesired impacts of floating platforms. Considering the complexity of the interactions between water quality parameters and the influence of the surrounding environment it is recommended to continue and to improve the monitoring campaign (e.g. include new parameters).

To support decision-makers, flood risk assessments provide estimates of the monetary impacts of floods or the economic efficiency of adaptation investments, although they often lack spatial or temporal dynamics. In addition, homeowners also make decisions at an individual level, such as implementing building-level adaptation measures or purchasing flood insurance. Homeowners’ decisions often deviate from rationality, as it is difficult for individuals to estimate the probability and associated damage of a potential flood. This PhD dissertation explores the extent to which we can incorporate the decision-making dynamics of governments, households, and flood insurance into a flood risk assessment at different spatial scales, and how this may improve flood risk management, applied to cases in the US.

In deze aflevering gaan lector Ruimtelijke Transformaties – Water Floris Boogaard, langs de as van techniek en lector Art & Sustainability Jan van Boeckel, langs de as van kunst met elkaar in gesprek over klimaatadaptatie. Onder leiding van host Dorothea van der Meulen beantwoorden ze vragen als: Wat kunnen beide invalshoeken voor elkaar betekenen? Hoe kunnen we mensen overtuigen om nu klimaatactie te ondernemen? Op welke manier kunnen studenten vanuit beide disciplines in contact komen met elkaar?

The rapid implementation of large scale floating solar panels has consequences to water quality and local ecosystems. Environmental impacts depend on the dimensions, design and proportions of the system in relation to the size of the surface water, as well as the characteristics of the water system (currents, tidal effects) and climatic conditions. There is often no time (and budget) for thorough research into these effects on ecology and water quality. A few studies have addressed the potential impacts of floating solar panels, but often rely on models without validation with in situ data. In this work, water quality sensors continuously monitored key water quality parameters at two different locations: (i) underneath a floating solar park, (ii) at a reference location positioned in open water. An underwater drone was used to obtain vertical profiles of water quality and to collect underwater images. The results showed little differences in the measured key water quality parameters below the solar panels. The temperature at the upper layers of water was lower under the solar panels, and there were less detected temperature fluctuations. A biofouling layer on the floating structure was visible in the underwater images a few months after the construction of the park.

Onderzoek in Arnhem leert dat de infiltratiecapaciteiten van doorlatende verharding en regenwatertuinen voldoende is om forse buien te verwerken maar verschillen in tijd en ruimte. Bij goed ontwerp, aanleg en beheer kunnen deze regenwatervoorzieningen een goede bijdrage leveren aan het vasthouden, bergen en afvoeren van regenwater in het stedelijk gebied.

De metingen van diverse innovatieve voorzieningen in proeftuinen op de Waterstraat in Delft en de Klimaattuin in Groningen vormen onderbouwing van de toekomstige richtlijnen voor klimaatadaptatie. De Urban Rainshell is een van die voorzieningen.

CurioUs haakt met deze vierde meetactie aan bij het onderzoek van Floris Boogaard en Allard Roest in samenwerking met Forum Groningen, Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health en Science Linx.

De volksgezondheid is het belangrijkste doel van de riolering. Door de afvoer en zuivering van ons afvalwater is de sterfte aan infectieziektes en epidemieën, zoals cholera, dysenterie en andere dodelijke infectieziekten, verleden tijd geworden. Om dat zo te houden dienen we de mogelijke risico's te kennen, nieuwe (inter)nationale ontwikkelingen als 'van groen naar grijs' kritisch te bekijken en indien nodig ons waterbeheer en ons gedrag aan te passen.
