- Abstract
Purpose: We investigated whether a one-stage combination of vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT) with water jet-assisted liposuction (WAL) can be safely performed and results in improved patient outcomes such as a greater reduction in arm volume when treating chronic breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we included all patients from our encrypted lymphedema database treated for chronic BCRL with VLNT or VLNT + WAL who had a minimum follow-up of two years. We analyzed patient-specific variables including arm circumferences as well as patient-reported outcomes before and after surgery as well as surgery time, surgery-related complications and patient satisfaction. Results: Only the mean preoperative differences of the circumferences between the lymphedematous and the unaffected arm in individual patients showed a statistically significant difference between treatment groups (p < 0.05). Indeed, patients treated with VLNT + WAL had consistently larger differences in individual sets of arms and therefore more pronounced chronic BCRL. The mean surgery time was significantly longer in the VLNT + WAL group (p < 0.05). Complications were seldom and similar in both groups. Using a numeric rating scale, the level of patient satisfaction following treatment did not differ significantly between groups (p = 0.323). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that a one-stage combination of VLNT with WAL does not result in more complications even though it also entails a longer surgery time. This is acceptable as secondary interventions resulting in overall longer surgery times and higher costs can be avoided. A one-stage combination might be especially favourable for patients suffering from more severe chronic BCRL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is the first study to look at the characteristics of funds accepting the $2.7 trillion taxpayer guarantee of money market mutual funds during the 2008 financial crisis. Fund shares that benefited from Federal Reserve's asset-backed commercial paper program were significantly more likely to get bailed out by taxpayers and sponsors. The paper tests if funds adhering to the SEC's 2010 liquidity reforms prior to their enactment were less likely to be bailed out in 2008. Finally, it examines if funds subject to the 2014 floating NAV regulations were more likely to be bailed out in 2008. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: The lipografting is increasingly used in the fleld of plastic surgery. Widely used harvesting technique of fatderived stem-cells is lipoaspiration. There exist two big streams of fat harvesting for lipografting: mechanical liposuction and manual liposuction. METHODS: Two harvested specimens were compared in this prospective blind study in the means of stemcells viability and their ability to grow in cell-cultures. Techniques to compare were: manual lipoaspiration with 50 ml syringe and WAL (water-jet assisted liposuction). RESULTS: Twenty specimens from ten patients were investigated in the tissue bank. There were no differences in the amount of live stem-cells between two groups. Also no differences were found between both harvesting techniques in the mean of cell ability to grow in cell-cultures. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that there are no statistically signiflcant differences in the number, vitality and viability of stem cells when comparing two ways of mesenchymal stem cell collection, both manual and machine sampling (WAL). When cultured in vitro, both samples collected from each patient also appeared to be able to multiply with no statistical differences (Tab. 2, Fig. 2, Ref. 18). Text in PDF www.elis.sk. Eight genotypes of Wal viz., DPLW-46, DPLW-61, DPLW-10, DPLW-31, DPLW-15, DPLW-48, DPLW-51, DPLW-29 and their crosses made in half diallel fashion were evaluated to estimate the combining ability and heterosis effects for yield and yield component characters. The proportion of δ2g/δ2s revealed preponderance of non additive gene action for inheritance of all the characters. All the parents exhibit significant estimates for combining ability for one or more characters. The parents viz., DPLW-29, DPLW-15 and DPLW-51 were good combiner for most of the characters. Among the crosses DPLW -46 X DPLW-29, DPLW-51 X DPLW-29, DPLW-46 X DPLW-61, DPLW-15 X DPLW-51 and DPLW-46 X DPLW-10 were identified as promising cross combinations and recorded highest significant positive heterosis over mid and better-parents for seed yield per plant. These heterotic cross combinations could be exploited to get superior segregants.

Chalcogenide thin films, such as Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3 have been under the scientific community’s attention since long, due to their application as thermoelectric material. Recently, they are gaining additional interest because of their potential use as Topological Insulators (TIs). TIs are materials that combine the existence of insulating bulk with the presence of surfaces hosting Topological Surface States (TSS). TSS are characterized by a Dirac-like band structure with intrinsic momentum-dependent spin polarization and extremely high mobility. These features translate into the possibility of controlling the magnetization of an adjacent magnetic media by applying an electric field across the TI (charge-to-spin conversion) or vice versa (spin-to-charge conversion), in both cases with very low electrical dissipation and limited operation time. Because of these astonishing electrical properties, they have been proposed as potential materials to boost the integration of spintronic devices into ordinary electronics. However, the main currently used technique to grow TIs is Molecular Beam Epitaxy, which is not suitable to guarantee the TIs’ mass production, mainly due to the high cost to be faced when targeting wafers-scaled growth. Achieving the growth of TIs through methods allowing an easier technology transfer is therefore demanding. Among them, chemical methods are thought to be a good solution to achieve conformal TIs’ growth on large-area substrates, at a limited cost. In this thesis, I used metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) to optimize the growth of p-type Sb2Te3, n-type Bi2Te3, and combined Sb2Te3/Bi2Te3 bilayer, on top of Si(111) intrinsic substrate. The main focus has been to validate the topological behavior of such large-area TIs by a thorough study of their (magneto) electrical and electronic properties. In all cases, the clear existence of TSS has been demonstrated by analyzing the observed weak-antilocalization (WAL) effect and by imaging the band structure with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In all the TIs, there is the existence of a non-negligible contribution to the global transport mechanism arising from the bulk states. This is particularly true in the Bi2Te3 single layers, due to the Fermi level crossing the bulk states. A core activity of the thesis’s work was therefore dedicated to attempt the Bi2Te3’s band structure engineering by coupling it with Sb2Te3 in a full in-situ MOCVD process. In particular, with Sb2Te3 and Bi2Te3 sharing the same crystalline structure, the growth of Bi2Te3 on top of Sb2Te3 was optimized. By ARPES, we observed a clear shift of the Fermi level towards the Dirac point. As a direct consequence, the bulk contribution to the global transport mechanism is largely suppressed, and this is reflected in MC shape which is very close to the cusp-like one expected for ideal TIs where the bulk is insulating. The MOCVD-developed TIs has been finally integrated in simple heterostructures with simple (Co-based) ferromagnetic layers, in order to test their potentiality as spin-charge converters. In particular, by means of spin-pumping ferromagnetic resonance (SP-FMR), the spin-charge conversion occurring in Sb2Te3 and the bilayer of Sb2Te3/Bi2Te3 has been measured by taking advantage of the clear favorable position of the Fermi level close to the Dirac point. For both systems, SP-FMR demonstrated quite a large spin-charge conversion, thus confirming that the MOCVD-grown Si/Sb2Te3 and Si/Sb2Te3/Bi2Te3 are promising candidates to be integrated into future spintronic devices based on TIs. The successful growth of the 2D ferromagnet CrTe-based alloy on top of our MOCVD-grown TIs has also been achieved, and the magnetic properties of the 2D ferromagnets were verified by MOKE microscopy, constituting a first step towards the development of a full chalcogenide-based spin-charge converter.

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements of a water-jet for water-assisted liposuction (WAL) are carried out to investigate the distribution of velocity and therefore momentum and acting force on the human sub-cutaneous fat tissue. These results shall validate CFD simulations and force sensor measurements of the water-jet and support the development of a new WAL device that is able to harvest low volumes of fat tissue for regenerative medicine even gentler than regular WAL devices.

Abstract Background The BEAULI -method (Breast Augmentation by Lipotransfer) is available for extraction and processing of large transplantable fat quantities. The aim of this work is to describe the surgical technique precisely and reproducibly and to provide an overview of the autologous fat transfer based on surgical experience. Method The author performed 300 autologous fat transplantations on 254 women between September 3, 2010, and May 13, 2015. Patients desiring moderate volume increase, fuller and firmer breasts, as well as an optimization of the silhouette, ideally with the concurrent desire of the correction of unwanted fat deposits, were selected. The fat was extracted via water-jet assisted liposuction (Body-jet, Human Med AG, Schwerin, Germany), and the fat cells were subsequently separated with the Lipocollector® (Human Med AG, Schwerin, Germany). Results The results were assessed with a control exam and photo comparison and were based on the responses on a questionnaire. Overall, 35.9% of the patients defined the result as very good, 38.6% as good, 22.4% as satisfactory, and 3.1% as poor. Conclusion This study shows that the autologous fat cell transplantation into the female breast via water-jet assisted liposuction achieves a moderate and harmoniously appearing breast volume enlargement as well as contour improvement. Further studies with more cases and longer observation periods over several years could contribute to improving the method of the autologous fat transfer regarding the grow-in rate, efficiency, and safety.

Pb-isotopes have been proposed as pathfinders for sandstone-hosted unconformity-related U deposits, with isotope ratios providing information on mineralization timing and element remobilization and migration. Pb-isotopes proximal to mineralization display radiogenic signatures, often with &lsquo, excess Pb&rsquo, suggestive of derivation from greater U concentrations than are currently present. The U deposits in the Kiggavik project area (west of Baker Lake, NU, Canada) are basement-hosted, contain several generations of pitchblende mineralization, display a strong structural control, and are located in fault-related fracture systems and foliation-parallel veinlets. Drill core samples were analysed by Inductively-Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS) for Pb isotopes following multi-acid total-digestion, reverse Aqua Regia partial-digestion, and weak-acid-leach attacks, to evaluate the utility of the respective dissolution methods in Pb-isotope pathfinder geochemistry. Partial-digestion results are similar to weak-acid-leach results, indicating that interpretation of Pb-isotope signatures can be carried out from partial-digestion data if weak-acid-leach data are unavailable. Application of this pathfinder method at Kiggavik shows that Pb-isotope ratios display systematic trends useful for exploration vectoring. Uranium-content-adjusted 206Pb/204Pb ratios and 206Pb/204Pb &lsquo, excess-lead&rsquo, data highlight anomalous isotopic values. 207Pb/206Pb ratios display downhole trends complementary to location of mineralization. Three-dimensional (3D) distributions of Pb-isotope data at the Contact U prospect show systematic trends and form halos around the mineralization. Isotopic footprints are limited to <, 50 m from the mineralization outline, reflecting host-rock and structural control, but indicate areas with elevated potential for U mineralization and provide vectoring information within basement lithologies.

- Abstract
Summary: Background: Stem cell enrichment is generally believed to be of crucial importance for success in lipofilling for cosmetic breast augmentation. No comparative clinical studies have been reported to support this. Methods: A total of 18 women underwent breast augmentation with water-assisted lipotransfer (WAL). In 10 of the cases, transferred lipoaspirate was enriched with stromal stem cells using the Celution
® system (Cytori Therapeutics Inc., San Diego, Ca, USA). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based volumetric analysis was done preoperatively and 6 months after the procedure. To verify scientifically that stem cells were transplanted, samples of the transplanted tissues were processed in the laboratory to isolate the adipose stem cells (ASCs). Results: MRI volumetry revealed a volume survival of the whole (watery) graft of mean 54% (SD 7) in the WAL only and of 50% (SD 10) in the WAL with stem cell-enrichment patients. As centrifugation of the WAL grafts demonstrated an average adipose tissue of 68%, the average volume survival of adipose tissue itself was 79% (SD 13) in the WAL only and 74% (SD 14) in the WAL with stem cell-enrichment patients. This difference (4.5%) was not statistically significant (independent samples t test, p = 0.330, 95% confidence interval of difference, 4.8, 13.9%). Conclusions: Breast augmentation by lipofilling using WAL alone is faster, cheaper, has a lower risk of contamination and offers at least an equal take rate. We do not see any advantage in stem cell enrichment by the Celution® system in cosmetic fat transplantation to the breast. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]- Published

Summary: For one of the most commonly performed aesthetic procedures, liposuction has a somewhat mixed reputation. This may result from suboptimal technical comprehension and/or poor patient selection. It has also attracted strong commercial pressure from manufacturers of new, sometimes less assiduously-evaluated, technologies. Liposuction is not a panacea for obesity and patients are not always cognisant of this. On the other hand, it can produce highly satisfactory outcomes for well-selected patients and anatomical areas when performed by appropriately-trained operators using properly selected technologies. Although introduced by the Europeans, liposuction was enthusiastically adopted by the North Americans, yet seems to have excited little scientific interest in the UK, despite widespread use. Given the numerous techniques and recent advances, a review may be timely. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

24. Water Jet-Assisted Liposuction for Patients with Lipoedema: Histologic and Immunohistologic Analysis of the Aspirates of 30 Lipoedema Patients.

- Abstract
Lipoedema is a fat distribution disorder causing massive, bilaterally symmetrical enlargement of the lower and in some cases the upper extremities in women. The atraumatic, anatomically appropriate procedure of water jet-assisted liposuction available today represents a promising treatment for these patients who generally suffer from severe subjective and objective impairment. Liposuction treatment can bring long-term improvement if the operative technique focuses on lymph vessel preservation. Immunohistologic analyses show minimal evidence of lymph vessel structures in lipoaspirates. The histologic analysis of the aspirates documents a relatively specific removal (“apheresis”) of primarily intact lipocytes with low vascular amount. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pb-isotopes have been proposed as pathfinders for sandstone-hosted unconformity-related U deposits, with isotope ratios providing information on mineralization timing and element remobilization and migration. Pb-isotopes proximal to mineralization display radiogenic signatures, often with 'excess Pb' suggestive of derivation from greater U concentrations than are currently present. Uranium-content-adjusted
206 Pb/204 Pb ratios and206 Pb/204 Pb 'excess-lead' data highlight anomalous isotopic values.207 Pb/206 Pb ratios display downhole trends complementary to location of mineralization. Three-dimensional (3D) distributions of Pb-isotope data at the Contact U prospect show systematic trends and form halos around the mineralization. Isotopic footprints are limited to <50 m from the mineralization outline, reflecting host-rock and structural control, but indicate areas with elevated potential for U mineralization and provide vectoring information within basement lithologies. Endogenous sharing rules were introduced by Simon and Zame (Econometrica 58(4):861–872, 1990) to model payoff indeterminacy in discontinuous games. They prove the existence in every compact strategic game of a mixed Nash equilibrium and an associated sharing rule. We extend their result to economies with externalities (Arrow and Debreu in Econometrica 22(3):265–290, 1954) where, by definition, players are restricted to pure strategies. We also provide a new interpretation of payoff indeterminacy in Simon and Zame’s model in terms of preference incompleteness.

The range of substrates that the bone-eating marine worm Osedax is able to consume has important implications for its evolutionary history, especially its potential link to the rise of whales. Once considered a whale specialist, recent work indicates that Osedax consumes a wide range of vertebrate remains, including whale soft tissue and the bones of mammals, birds and fishes. Traces resembling those produced by living Osedax have now been recognized for the first time in Oligocene whale teeth and fish bones from deep-water strata of the Makah, Pysht and Lincoln Creek formations in western Washington State, USA. The specimens were acid etched from concretions, and details of the borehole morphology were investigated using micro-computed tomography. Together with previously published Osedax traces from this area, our results show that by Oligocene time Osedax was able to colonize the same range of vertebrate remains that it consumes today and had a similar diversity of root morphologies. This supports the view that a generalist ability to exploit vertebrate bones may be an ancestral trait of Osedax. peerReviewed

- Abstract
We study the weak antilocalization (WAL) effect in topological insulator Bi2Te3 thin films at low temperatures. The two-dimensional WAL effect associated with surface carriers is revealed in the tilted magnetic field dependence of magnetoconductance. Our data demonstrate that the observed WAL is robust against deposition of nonmagnetic Au impurities on the surface of the thin films, but it is quenched by the deposition of magnetic Fe impurities which destroy the π Berry phase of the topological surface states. The magnetoconductance data of a 5 nm Bi2Te3 film suggests that a crossover from symplectic to unitary classes is observed with the deposition of Fe impurities.
