Het Kenniscentrum Recreatie is in 2009 gestart met een debat getiteld 'Het ideale vrijetijdslandschap'. Doel van dit debat is inzicht te krijgen in zowel de wensen als de realisatie van het ideale Nederlandse vrijetijdslandschap. In dit Forum wordt aandacht besteedt aan dit debat. De eerste bijdrage 'Groen nabij de stad: Mooie woorden of daadkrachtig beleid? van Rob Berkers (Kenniscentrum Recreatie), gaat in op de rol van de overheid bij het realiseren van voldoende groen in de directe leefomgeving. In reactie op zijn stuk, wordt Hans Thiebou aan het woord gelaten in 'Natuur en recreatie in en om de stad, een verrijking voor onze samenleving'. Vanuit het perspectief van Natuur- en Recreatieschap De Hollandse Biesbosch Nationaal Landschap laat hij zien dat de procedures weliswaar lang duren, maar dat het wel de moeite waard blijft erin te blijven investeren. Tot slot een betoog van Marie-Ange de Kort (Hogeschool INHolland) getiteld 'Het ideale vrijetijdslandschap: weinig ruimte, veel vrije tijd'. Hierin stelt zij dat de ontwikkelingen van steden en platteland sterk van elkaar verschillen en dat de overheid een belangrijke regiefunctie heeft om deze goed op elkaar af te stemmen. Bovendien zouden gemeenten ook volgens haar meer met elkaar moeten samenwerken om als regio een uniek aanbod te kunnen creëren

Nog niet zo lang geleden leefden we met de belofte van steeds meer vrije tijd. De werkweek zou alleen nog maar korten, de tijd vrij voor persoonlijke ontwikkeling en maatschappelijke participatie. Kinderen en jongeren zouden opgroeien in een quasi zorgeloze wereld. De welvaartsstaat was op weg om alle tegenstellingen te overwinnen. Vandaag is het roer om. Wie werkt, krijgt ingeprent dat het langer, harder en goedkoper moet. Wie niet werkt, ervaart groeiende druk om een quasi onvindbare job te zoeken. De welvaartsstaat is nog hoogstens een tijdelijke springplank. Vrije tijd fungeert als zuur verdiende consumptietijd. Of als kans om de eigen inzetbaarheid op de arbeidsmarkt te vergroten. Persoonlijke ontwikkeling en maatschappelijke participatie staan vandaag onder druk. De strijd om de tijd is vandaag even reëel als onzichtbaar. Niemand blijft buiten schot. En kinderen of jongeren al helemaal niet. De risicozone heeft zich uitgebreid tot de vrije tijd. Jongeren ondervinden toenemende druk om cv’s te pimpen via stages, engagementen en andere “nuttige” vrijetijdsbesteding. Consumptiedruk benadrukt sociale ongelijkheden. En sommige niet-consumptieve vormen van vrijetijdsbesteding, zoals “rondhangen”, krijgt de stempel “storend”. Voor welke keuzes staat jeugdwerk met kinderen en jongeren in een maatschappelijk kwetsbare situatie? Welke kansen zien we voor een emanciperende praktijk? Een Toeristisch-Recreatieve Index (TRI) is ontwikkeld om gebieden te vergelijken naar aantrekkelijkheid. De index wordt bepaald door scores op toegankelijkheid, bereikbaarheid, seizoensgebondenheid en publiciteit van voorzieningen, en het landschap tesommeren met de scores van regio-gebonden basisvoorwaarden. Vervolgens wordt gewogen via de berekende regionale participatiegraad en frequentie aan recreatieactiviteiten. De methode TRI kan worden gebruikt om inzicht te krijgen in de relatieve sterkte ofzwakte van de toeristisch-recreatieve sector van een gebied en bij simulaties in het aanbod en gebruik. Door de minder betrouwbare frequentiegegevens moet het berekend gebruik door inwoners en toeristen worden opgevat als een indicatie.

This research addresses the question on how Delfzijl can take advantage of the dykes referred to recreational activities within the next five years. In order to investigate this problem statement, the elaboration was started with the definition of research questions and secondary research. Here, brochures, websites, books and other researches were used to gather significant information about Delfzijl. Next, quantitative and qualitative research methods were used in order to collect data and information about the different stakeholders, the current situation of the municipality and the expectations of the people concerning the future. Thus, a fieldtrip was done to interview stakeholders and to distribute questionnaires to the sample. Additionally, a benchmarking was done with the German city `Nessmersiel` in order to compare and discover development possibilities. The research outcome is that Delfzijl suffers from a decreasing population number, a low level of recreational attractiveness and lack of money. Many people claim that the dyke is a significant resource that should be used for recreational developments. Hereby, developments can be done on a small budget.

Over the past decade, tourism studies has broken out of its traditional institutional affiliation with business and management programs to take its legitimate place as an interdisciplinary social science field of cutting edge scholarship. The field has emerged as central to ongoing debates in social theory concerning such diverse topics as postcolonialism, mobility, and postmodernism, to name just a few. While there has been a diverse body of empirical research on this transformation the theoretical discussions in tourism studies remain largely attached to theories of modernity and Anglo-centric assumptions about tourism. There is a need for the field to come to terms theoretically with the contemporary and future realities of tourism as a truly global phenomenon. This book puts forward new postmodernist ideas and arguments about tourism today and in the future.

De voor- en nadelen van de verschillende methoden zijn beschreven. Het CVTO levert alleen gebruiksgegevens over type omgevingen. Systematisch een jaar rond tellen wordt door natuur- en recreatiebeherende instanties nauwelijks gedaan. De privacy-wetgeving laat het analyseren van GSM-data niet toe en ook de ruimtelijke onnauwkeurigheid en onvolledigheid in typen recreanten (alleen toeristen of alleen recreanten met een internetaccount) spelen een beperkende rol. Bij een combinatie van methoden zijn er geen verhoudingsgetallen te genereren waarmee betrouwbare uitspraken kunnen worden gedaan over het aantal bezoeken per jaar van specifieke, bij naam genoemde natuur- en recreatiegebieden.

This study examines the daily life in multi-ethnic neighbourhoods, and how people with different ethnic backgrounds live together. My research shows that positive experiences in public spaces contribute to feeling at home in a multi-ethnic neighbourhood. Not only intense and lasting contacts, but also short interactions contribute to feeling at home somewhere. By being in public space, relationships are formed with these spaces and with other people; residents feel at home and as such, integration has taken place. I therefore want to emphasize that politicians should look at the everyday realities in neighbourhoods like Lombok when discussing issues related to multi-ethnic societies. Repeatedly stressing the dichotomy between native and non-native Dutch citizens and focusing on problems, has a negative effect on the everyday lives of people because it produces and reproduces stereotyped images. I believe that integration is not only about non-native Dutch residents adapting themselves to Dutch society: it is also about the extent to which people from various backgrounds live together and feel at home in their neighbourhood.

In today’s increasingly complex tourism environment, decision-making requires a rounded, well-informed view of the whole. Critical distance should be encouraged, consultation and intellectual rigour should be the norm amongst managers and there needs to be a radical shift in our approach to educating future tourism and hospitality managers and researchers. This book intends to move the debate forward by exploring how critical tourism inquiry can make a difference in the world, linking tourism education driven by the values of empowerment, partnership and ethics to policy and practice. This book is designed to enable its reader to think through vital concepts and theories relating to tourism and hospitality management, stimulate critical thinking and use multidisciplinary perspectives. The book is organized around three key ways of producing social change in and through tourism: critical thinking, critical education and critical action.

Brinkhuijsen onderzoekt in haar dissertatie hoe recreatie in de loop van de twintigste eeuw een plek kreeg in het landschap en het landschapsontwerp, van de pioniersperiode (voor W.O. II), de massacrecreatie (jaren zestig), het recreatief medegebruik (rond 1980) to de huidige periode, die Brinkhuijsen kenmerkt met "verbreding". Ze analyseert ontwerpen die invloed hebben uitgeoefend op de manier waarop we recreatielandschappen nu zien, zoals het Amsterdamse Bos uit 1934, kleinschalige recreatielandschappen en een netwerk van fietspaden en wandelpaden in de landinrichting Oukoop-Kortrijk uit 1966, natuurontwikkelingsprojecten in het rivierengebied uit de jaren tachtig en negentig en de landschapsvisie voor de Drentsche Aa uit 2005. De achteraf wat schokkende conclusie luidt dat recreatie nauwelijks van belang is geweest in het landschapsontwerp
