Intensity interferometry is a reemerging astronomical technique for performing high angular resolution studies at visible wavelengths, benefiting immensely from the recent improvements in (single) photon detection instrumentation. Contrary to direct imaging or amplitude interferometry, intensity interferometry correlates light intensities rather than light amplitudes, circumventing atmospheric seeing limitations at the cost of reduced sensitivity. In this paper we present measurements with the 1.04 m Omicron telescope of C2PU (Centre P\'edagogique Plan\`ete Univers) at the Calern Observatory in the south of France featuring hybrid single photon counting detectors (HPDs). We successfully measured photon bunching from temporal correlations of three different A-type stars - Vega, Altair and Deneb - in the blue at 405 nm. In all cases the observed coherence time fits well to both the pre-calculated expectations as well as the values measured in preceding laboratory tests. The best signal to noise ratio (SNR), with a value of 12, is obtained for Vega for an observation time of 12.1 h. The combination of HPDs and time to digital converter (TDC) results in a timing jitter of the detection system < 50 ps. Our setup demonstrates stable and efficient detection of the starlight owed to the large active area of the HPDs. Utilizing a new class of large area single photon detectors based on multichannel plate amplification, high resolution spatial intensity interferometry experiments are within reach at 1 m diameter class telescopes within one night of observation time for bright stars.

The axioms of quantum mechanics provide limited information regarding the structure of the Hilbert space, such as the underlying number system. The latter is generally regarded as complex, but generalizations of complex numbers, so-called hyper-complex numbers, cannot be ruled out in theory. Therefore, specialized experiments to test for hyper-complex quantum mechanics are needed. To date, experimental tests are limited to single-particle interference exploiting a closed phase relation in three-path interference called the Peres test. In this work, we reveal an elegant matrix formalism to derive the Peres test putting it on a solid mathematical ground. On this basis, we introduce multi-path and multi-particle interference tests, which provide a direct probe for the dimensionality of the number system of quantum mechanics.

We study collective light scattering from linear crystals with up to twelve $^{40}\text{Ca}^+$ ions, acting as coherent single photon emitters. Light-scattering is induced by two-photon laser excitation, starting from the S$_{1/2}$ to D$_{5/2}$ quadrupole transition at 729~nm in combination with laser excitation of the D$_{5/2}$ to P$_{3/2}$ dipole transition at 854~nm, followed by a decay back to S$_{1/2}$ via a single photon emission near 393~nm. The scattered intensity is recorded in the far field, featuring the interference of emitted light fields of the entire crystal. Furthermore, we demonstrate spin-dependent coherent scattering and unveil the time evolution of a previously encoded spin texture in a crystal employing the recorded dynamics of the spatial frequency components of the fringe pattern.

A readout system based on the Timepix4 ASIC, is being developed for photon science. The TEMPUS detector can be operated in two distinct modes: a photon counting mode, which allows for conventional full-frame readout at rates up to 40 kfps; and an event-driven time-stamping mode, which allows excellent time resolution in the nanosecond regime in measurements with moderate X-ray flux. We investigate two-electron interference in free space using two laser-triggered needle tips as independent electron sources, a fermionic realisation of the landmark Hanbury Brown and Twiss interferometer. We calculate the two-electron interference pattern in a quantum path formalism taking into account the fermionic nature and the spin configuration of the electrons. We also estimate the Coulomb repulsion in the setup in a semiclassical approach. We find that antibunching resulting from Pauli's exclusion principle and repulsion stemming from the Coulomb interaction can be clearly distinguished.

We propose an ansatz quantum circuit for the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE), suitable for exploring the phase structure of the multi-flavor Schwinger model in the presence of a chemical potential. Our ansatz is capable of incorporating relevant model symmetries via constrains on the parameters, and can be implemented on circuit-based as well as measurement-based quantum devices. We show via classical simulation of the VQE that our ansatz is able to capture the phase structure of the model, and can approximate the ground state to a high level of accuracy. Moreover, we perform proof-of-principle simulations on superconducting, gate-based quantum hardware. Our results show that our approach is suitable for current gate-based quantum devices, and can be readily implemented on measurement-based quantum devices once available.

Intensity interferometry is a re-emerging interferometry tool that alleviates some of the challenges of amplitude interferometry at the cost of reduced sensitivity. We demonstrate the feasibility of intensity interferometry with fast single photon counting detectors at small telescopes by utilising a telescope of diameter of merely $0.5$\,m. The entire measurement setup, including collimation, optical filtering, and two single photon detectors, is attached directly to the telescope without the use of optical fibres, facilitated by the large area of our single photon detectors. For digitisation and timing, we utilise a Time-To-Amplitude-Converter. Observing $\alpha$ Lyrae (Vega) for a total exposure time of $32.4$\,h over the course of six nights, an auto-correlation signal with a contrast of $(9.5 \pm 2.7) \times 10^-3$ and a coherence time of $(0.34 \pm 0.12)$ ps at a SNR of 2.8 is measured. The result fits well to preceding laboratory tests as well as expectations calculated from the optical and electronic characteristics of our measurement setup. This measurement, to our knowledge, constitutes the first time that a bunching signal with starlight was measured in the B band with single photon counting detectors. Simultaneously, this is to date the stellar intensity interferometry measurement utilising the smallest telescope. Our successful measurement shows that intensity interferometry can be adopted not only at large scale facilities, but also at readily available and inexpensive smaller telescopes.

We propose a variational quantum eigensolver suitable for exploring the phase structure of the multi-flavor Schwinger model in the presence of a chemical potential. The parametric ansatz circuit we design is capable of incorporating the symmetries of the model, present in certain parameter regimes, which allows for reducing the number of variational parameters substantially. Moreover, the ansatz circuit can be implementated on both measurement-based and circuit-based quantum hardware. We numerically demonstrate that our ansatz circuit is able to capture the phase structure of the model and allows for faithfully approximating the ground state. We study the collective spontaneous emission of three identical two-level atoms initially prepared in the excited states by measuring Glauber's third-order photon correlation function. Assuming two atoms at sub-wavelength distance from each other such that they are subject to the dipole-dipole interaction while the third one is located several wavelengths away, we observe super- and subradiant decay alike, depending on the direction of observation. Unlike the case where no remote atom is introduced or no conditional measurements are performed, the spontaneous emission behavior of the conditioned three-atom system differs strongly from the single-atom and the canonical two-atom configuration. The conditional measurements associated with the three-photon correlation function in combination with the dipole-dipole interaction between the adjacent atoms lead to quantum interference among the different decay channels allowing to engineer the spontaneous emission in space and time.

Modification of spontaneous decay in space and time is a central topic of quantum physics. It has been predominantly investigated in the context of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), gaining new interest recently in the domain of nano-optics. Beyond cavity-QED, spontaneous emission may be modified also in free space due to correlations among the photon emitters, a phenomenon known as super- and sub-radiance. Correlations may stem either from direct interactions between the particles, from long-range exchange of photons, or by measuring single photons in a common mode. Yet, the genuine spatial spontaneous emission pattern of an atomic ensemble in an entangled quantum state has not been observed so far, due to the lack of ultra-fast cameras with high spatial resolution suited for recording single photons from single atoms. Preparing two trapped ions in free space in entangled Dicke states via photon detection, we study the resulting collective spontaneous emission patterns. Depending on the symmetry of the Dicke states, associated with the direction of detection of the first state-determining photon, we observe fundamentally different emission patterns for the subsequently scattered photon, including super- and sub-radiance. Our results demonstrate that the detection of a single photon can profoundly modify the collective emission of an atomic array, here represented by its most elementary building block of two atoms in free space.

Stellar intensity interferometers correlate photons within their coherence time and could overcome the baseline limitations of existing amplitude interferometers. Intensity interferometers do not rely on phase coherence of the optical elements and thus function without high grade optics and light combining delay lines. However, the coherence time of starlight observed with realistic optical filter bandwidths (> 0.1 nm) is usually much smaller than the time resolution of the detection system (> 10 ps), resulting in a greatly reduced correlation signal. Reaching high signal to noise in a reasonably short measurement time can be achieved in different ways: either by increasing the time resolution, which increases the correlation signal height, or by increasing the photon rate, which decreases statistical uncertainties of the measurement. We present laboratory measurements employing both approaches and directly compare them in terms of signal to noise ratio. A high time-resolution interferometry setup designed for small to intermediate size optical telescopes and thus lower photon rates (diameters < some meters) is compared to a setup capable of measuring high photon rates, which is planned to be installed at Cherenkov telescopes with dish diameters of > 10 m. We use a Xenon lamp as a common light source simulating starlight. Both setups measure the expected correlation signal and work at the expected shot-noise limit of statistical uncertainties for measurement times between 10 min and 23 h. Cross-correlation signals are recorded from fluorescence photons scattered in free space off a trapped ion structure. The analysis of the signal allows for unambiguously revealing the spatial frequency, thus the distance, as well as the spatial alignment of the ions. For the case of two ions we obtain from the cross-correlations a spatial frequency $f_\text{spatial}=1490 \pm 2_{stat.}\pm 8_{syst.}\,\text{rad}^{-1}$, where the statistical uncertainty improves with the integrated number of correlation events as $N^{-0.51\pm0.06}$. We independently determine the spatial frequency to be $1494\pm 11\,\text{rad}^{-1}$, proving excellent agreement. Expanding our method to the case of three ions, we demonstrate its functionality for two-dimensional arrays of emitters of indistinguishable photons, serving as a model system to yield structural information where direct imaging techniques fail.

Quantum theory permits interference between indistinguishable paths but, at the same time, restricts its order. Single-particle interference, for instance, is limited to the second order, that is, to pairs of single-particle paths. To date, all experimental efforts to search for higher-order interferences beyond those compatible with quantum mechanics have been based on such single-particle schemes. However, quantum physics is not bounded to single-particle interference. We here experimentally study many-particle higher-order interference using a two-photon-five-slit setup. We observe nonzero two-particle interference up to fourth order, corresponding to the interference of two distinct two-particle paths. We further show that fifth-order interference is restricted to $10^{-3}$ in the intensity-correlation regime and to $10^{-2}$ in the photon-correlation regime, thus providing novel bounds on higher-order quantum interference.

Photon statistics divides light sources into three different categories, characterized by bunched, antibunched or uncorrelated photon arrival times. Single atoms, ions, molecules, or solid state emitters display antibunching of photons, while classical thermal sources exhibit photon bunching. Here we demonstrate a light source in free space, where the photon statistics depends on the direction of observation, undergoing a continuous crossover between photon bunching and antibunching. We employ two trapped ions, observe their fluorescence under continuous laser light excitation, and record the spatially resolved autocorrelation function $g^{(2)}(\tau)$ with a movable Hanbury Brown and Twiss detector. Varying the detector position we find a minimum value for antibunching, $g^{(2)}(0) = 0.60(5)$ and a maximum of $g^{(2)}(0)=1.46(8)$ for bunching, demonstrating that this source radiates fundamentally different types of light alike. The observed variation of the autocorrelation function is understood in the Dicke model of heralded entangled states and the observed maximum and minimum values are modeled, taking independently measured experimental parameters into account.

Radiation damage is one of the most severe resolution limiting factors in x-ray imaging, especially relevant to biological samples. One way of circumventing this problem is to exploit correlation-based methods developed in quantum imaging. Among these, there is ghost imaging (GI) in which the image is formed by radiation that has never interacted with the sample. Here, we demonstrate GI at an XUV free-electron laser by utilizing correlation techniques. Born's rule, one of the cornerstones of quantum mechanics, relates detection probabilities to the modulus square of the wave function. Single-particle interference is accordingly limited to pairs of quantum paths and higher-order interferences are prohibited. Deviations from Born's law have been quantified via the Sorkin parameter which is proportional to the third-order term. We here extend this formalism to many-particle interferences and find that they exhibit a much richer structure. We demonstrate, in particular, that all interference terms of order $(2M+1)$ and greater vanish for $M$ particles. We further introduce a family of many-particle Sorkin parameters and show that they are exponentially more sensitive to deviations from Born's rule than their single-particle counterpart.

Measuring the $M$th-order intensity correlation function of light emitted by two statistically independent thermal light sources may display N00N-like interferences of arbitrary order $N = M/2$. We show that via a particular choice of detector positions one can isolate $M$-photon quantum paths where either all $M$ photons are emitted from the same source or $M/2$ photons are collectively emitted by both sources. The latter superposition displays N00N-like oscillations with $N = M/2$ which may serve, e.g., in astronomy, for imaging two distant thermal sources with $M/2$-fold increased resolution. Intensity correlation microscopy (ICM), which is prominently known through antibunching microscopy or super-resolution optical fluctuation imaging (SOFI), provides superresolution through a correlation analysis of antibunching of independent quantum emitters or temporal fluctuations of blinking fluorophores. For correlation order $m$ the PSF in the signal is effectively taken to the $m$th power, and is thus directly shrunk by the factor $\sqrt{m}$. Combined with deconvolution a close to linear resolution improvement of factor $m$ can be obtained. Yet, analysis of high correlation orders is challenging, what limits the achievable resolutions. Here we propose to use three dimensional structured illumination along with $m$th-order correlation analysis to obtain an enhanced scaling of up to $m+m=2m$. Including the stokes shift or plasmonic sub-wavelength illumination enhancements beyond $2m$ can be achieved. Hence, resolutions far below the diffraction limit in full 3D imaging can potentially be achieved already with low correlation orders. We report on prime number decomposition by use of the Talbot effect, a well-known phenomenon in classical near field optics whose description is closely related to Gauss sums. The latter are a mathematical tool from number theory used to analyze the properties of prime numbers as well as to decompose composite numbers into their prime factors. We employ the well-established connection between the Talbot effect and Gauss sums to implement prime number decompositions with a novel approach, making use of the longitudinal intensity profile of the Talbot carpet. We investigate Dicke subradiance of distant quantum sources in free space, i.e., the spatial emission pattern of spontaneously radiating non-interacting multi-level atoms or multi-photon sources, prepared in totally antisymmetric states. We find that the radiated intensity is marked by a strong suppression of spontaneous emission in particular directions. In resemblance to the analogous, yet inverted, superradiant emission profiles of $N$ distant two-level atoms prepared in symmetric Dicke states, we call the corresponding emission pattern $\textit{directional Dicke subradiance}$. We also show that higher order intensity correlations of the light incoherently emitted by statistically independent thermal light sources display the same directional Dicke subradiant behavior. The advent of accelerator-driven free-electron lasers (FEL) has opened new avenues for high-resolution structure determination via diffraction methods that go far beyond conventional x-ray crystallography methods. These techniques rely on coherent scattering processes that require the maintenance of first-order coherence of the radiation field throughout the imaging procedure. Here we show that higher-order degrees of coherence, displayed in the intensity correlations of incoherently scattered x-rays from an FEL, can be used to image two-dimensional objects with a spatial resolution close to or even below the Abbe limit. This constitutes a new approach towards structure determination based on incoherent processes, including Compton scattering, fluorescence emission or wavefront distortions, generally considered detrimental for imaging applications. Our method is an extension of the landmark intensity correlation measurements of Hanbury Brown and Twiss to higher than second-order paving the way towards determination of structure and dynamics of matter in regimes where coherent imaging methods have intrinsic limitations.

Established x-ray diffraction methods allow for high-resolution structure determination of crystals, crystallized protein structures or even single molecules. While these techniques rely on coherent scattering, incoherent processes like Compton scattering or fluorescence emission -- often the predominant scattering mechanisms -- are generally considered detrimental for imaging applications. Here we show that intensity correlations of incoherently scattered x-ray radiation can be used to image the full 3D structure of the scattering atoms with significantly higher resolution compared to conventional coherent diffraction imaging and crystallography, including additional three-dimensional information in Fourier space for a single sample orientation. We propose to use intensity correlation microscopy in combination with structured illumination to image quantum emitters that exhibit antibunching with a spatial resolution reaching far beyond the Rayleigh limit. Combining intensity measurements and intensity auto correlations up to order $m$ creates an effective PSF with FWHM shrunk by the factor $\sqrt{m}$. Structured Illumination microscopy on the other hand introduces a resolution improvement of factor 2 by use of the principle of moir\'e fringes. Here, we show that for linear low-intensity excitation and linear optical detection the simultaneous use of both techniques leads to an in theory unlimited resolution power with the improvement scaling favorably as $m + \sqrt{m}$ in dependence of the correlation order $m$. Hence, yielding this technique to be of interest in microscopy for imaging a variety of samples including biological ones. We report on a novel pseudothermal light source based on laser light coupled into an optical multimode fiber. The setup is simple, of low cost, exhibits inherently high directional light emission and allows for a flexible arrangement. By measuring the photon statistics and spatial two point intensity correlations in the far field we show that the setup exhibits all characteristics of a gaussian random source.

We propose to use multiphoton interferences of photons emitted from statistically independent thermal light sources in combination with linear optical detection techniques to reconstruct, i.e., image, arbitrary source geometries in one dimension with subclassical resolution. The scheme is an extension of earlier work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 233603 (2012)] where N regularly spaced sources in one dimension were imaged by use of the Nth-order intensity correlation function. Here, we generalize the scheme to reconstruct any number of independent thermal light sources at arbitrary separations in one dimension exploiting intensity correlation functions of order $m \geq 3$. We observe interference in the light scattered from trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion crystals. By varying the intensity of the excitation laser, we study the influence of elastic and inelastic scattering on the visibility of the fringe pattern and discriminate its effect from that of the ion temperature and wave-packet localization. In this way we determine the complex degree of coherence and the mutual coherence of light fields produced by individual atoms. We obtain interference fringes from crystals consisting of two, three and four ions in a harmonic trap. Control of the trapping potential allows for the adjustment of the interatomic distances and thus the formation of linear arrays of atoms serving as a regular grating of microscopic scatterers., Comment: Main text: 5 pages, 4 figures. Superradiance, i.e., spontaneous emission of coherent radiation by an ensemble of identical two-level atoms in collective states introduced by Dicke in 1954, is one of the enigmatic problems of quantum optics. The startling gist is that even though the atoms have no dipole moment they radiate with increased intensity in particular directions. Following the advances in our understanding of superradiant emission by atoms in entangled $W$ states we examine the quantum statistical properties of superradiance. Such investigations require the system to have at least two excitations as one needs to explore the photon-photon correlations of the radiation emitted by such states. We present specifically results for the spatially resolved photon-photon correlations of systems prepared in doubly excited $W$ states and give conditions when the atomic system emits nonclassial light. Equally, we derive the conditions for the occurrence of bunching and even of superbunching, a rare phenomenon otherwise known only from nonclassical states of light like the squeezed vacuum. We finally investigate the photon-photon cross correlations of the spontaneously scattered light and highlight the nonclassicalty of such correlations., Comment: 14 pages, 7 pictures

We investigate two-photon entangled states using two important degrees of freedom of the electromagnetic field, namely orbital angular momentum (OAM) and spin angular momentum. For photons propagating in the same direction we apply the idea of $\textit{entanglement duality}$ and develop schemes to do $\textit{entanglement sorting}$ based either on OAM or polarization. In each case the entanglement is tested using appropriate witnesses. We finally present generalizations of these ideas to three- and four-photon entangled states., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

It is theoretically and experimentally shown that photons emitted by statistically independent incoherent classical light sources and measured in the far field in spatially separated modes may display spatial correlations akin to path-entanglement of photons produced by quantum sources. By measuring higher order photon-correlations at different locations, i.e., $m$ photons in one mode and one photon in another mode, we experimentally demonstrate for $m \geq 6$ a violation of Bell-type inequalities for spatial degrees of freedom. The spatial correlations among the photons can be understood from state projection where the detection of the first $m$ photons projects the sources onto a state which emits the subsequent photon in a strongly correlated manner. From this perspective the entanglement and violation of Bell's inequalities appears as a consequence of nonvanishing cross correlations between noncommuting quadrature phase components of the two spatially separated fields after $m$ photons have been recorded. We propose to use multi-photon interferences from statistically independent light sources in combination with linear optical detection techniques to enhance the resolution in imaging. Experimental results with up to five independent thermal light sources confirm this approach to improve the spatial resolution. Since no involved quantum state preparation or detection is required the experiment can be considered an extension of the Hanbury Brown and Twiss experiment for spatial intensity correlations of order N>2.

We introduce a new observable for reading out a which-way detector in a Young-type interferometer whose eigenstates either contain full which-way information or none at all. We calculate the which-way knowledge K that can be retrieved from this observable and find that K depends on the phase difference \delta that the interfering object accumulates on its way from either slit to the detector. In particular, it turns out that K(\delta) has an upper bound of 1, almost independent of the visibility V of the interference pattern generated by the interfering object on a screen, which is in marked contrast to the well-known inequality K^2 + V^2 <= 1 (cf. We investigate wave-particle duality in a symmetric two-way interferometer with a which-way detector. We find that it is important to state wether the interfering object or the which-way detector is read out first. In case that the interfering object is read out first, we discover that it is possible to use the information about its state to increase the distinguishability to a value which violates the widely accepted bounds set by an inequality introduced by Jaeger et al. A scheme is discussed for measuring Nth-order coherences of two orthogonally polarized light fields in a single spatial mode at very limited experimental cost. To implement the scheme, the only measurements needed are the Nth-order intensity moments after the light beam has passed through two quarter-wave plates, one half-wave plate, and a polarizing beam splitter for specific settings of the wave plates. It is shown that this method can be applied for arbitrarily large N. A set of explicit values is given for the settings of the wave plates, constituting an optimal measurement of the Nth-order coherences for any N. For Fock states the method introduced here corresponds to a full state tomography.
