Coherent manipulation of magnetism through the lattice provides unprecedented opportunities for controlling spintronic functionalities on the ultrafast timescale. Such nonthermal control conventionally involves nonlinear excitation of Raman-active phonons which are coupled to the magnetic order. Linear excitation, in contrast, holds potential for more efficient and selective modulation of magnetic properties. However, the linear channel remains uncharted, since it is conventionally considered forbidden in inversion symmetric quantum materials. Here, we harness strong coupling between magnons and Raman-active phonons to achieve both linear and quadratic excitation regimes of magnon-polarons, magnon-phonon hybrid quasiparticles. We demonstrate this by driving magnon-polarons with an intense terahertz pulse in the van der Waals antiferromagnet $\mathrm{FePS_3}$. Such excitation behavior enables a unique way to coherently control the amplitude of magnon-polaron oscillations by tuning the terahertz field strength and its polarization. The polarimetry of the resulting coherent oscillation amplitude breaks the crystallographic $C_2$ symmetry due to strong interference between different excitation channels. The kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ hosts a variety of charge density wave (CDW) phases, which play a fundamental role in the formation of other exotic electronic instabilities. However, identifying the precise structure of these CDW phases and their intricate relationships remain the subject of intense debate, due to the lack of static probes that can distinguish the CDW phases with identical spatial periodicity. Here, we unveil the competition between two coexisting $2\times2\times2$ CDWs in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ harnessing time-resolved X-ray diffraction. By analyzing the light-induced changes in the intensity of CDW superlattice peaks, we demonstrate the presence of both phases, each displaying a significantly different amount of melting upon excitation. The anomalous light-induced sharpening of peak width further shows that the phase that is more resistant to photo-excitation exhibits an increase in domain size at the expense of the other, thereby showcasing a hallmark of phase competition. Our results not only shed light on the interplay between the multiple CDW phases in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, but also establish a non-equilibrium framework for comprehending complex phase relationships that are challenging to disentangle using static techniques., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures with supplemental Material

The physics of driven collective modes in quantum materials underpin a number of striking non-equilibrium functional responses, which include enhanced magnetism, ferroelectricity and superconductivity. However, the coherent coupling between multiple modes at once are difficult to capture by single-pump probe (one-dimensional) spectroscopy, and often remain poorly understood. One example is phonon-mediated amplification of Josephson plasmons in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, in which at least three normal modes of the solid are coherently mixed as a source of enhanced superconductivity. Here, we go beyond previous pump-probe experiments in this system and acquire two-dimensional frequency maps using pairs of mutually delayed, carrier envelope phase stable mid-infrared pump pulses, combined with measurements of the time-modulated second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. We find that the driven zone-center phonons amplify coherent pairs of opposite-momentum Josephson plasma polaritons, generating a squeezed state of interlayer phase fluctuations. The squeezed state is a potentially important ingredient in the microscopic physics of photo-induced superconductivity in this and other materials., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

In this work, we study the heat transfer from electron to phonon system within a five monolayer thin epitaxial Pb film on Si(111) upon fs-laser excitation. The response of the electron system is determined using time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy while the lattice excitation is measured by means of the Debye-Waller effect in time-resolved reflection high-energy electron diffraction. The electrons lose their heat within 0.5 ps while the lattice temperature rises slowly in 3.5 to 8 ps, leaving a gap of 3-7 ps. We propose that the hidden energy is transiently stored in high-frequency phonon modes for which diffraction is insensitive and which are excited in 0.5 ps. Within a three-temperature model we use three heat baths, namely electrons, high-frequency and low-frequency phonon modes to simulate the observations. The excitation of low-frequency acoustic phonons, i.e., thermalization of the lattice is facilitated through anharmonic phonon-phonon interaction.

Magnons are quantized collective spin-wave excitations in magnetically ordered materials. Revealing their interactions among these collective modes is crucial for the understanding of fundamental many-body effects in such systems and the development of high-speed information transport and processing devices based on them. Nevertheless, identifying couplings between individual magnon modes remains a long-standing challenge. Here, we demonstrate spectroscopic fingerprints of anharmonic coupling between distinct magnon modes in an antiferromagnet, as evidenced by coherent photon emission at the sum and difference frequencies of the two modes. This discovery is enabled by driving two magnon modes coherently with a pair of tailored terahertz fields and then disentangling a mixture of nonlinear responses with different origins. Our approach provides a route for generating nonlinear magnon-magnon mixing.

A new group of kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K, Rb, Cs) exhibit a variety of intertwined unconventional electronic phases, which emerge from a puzzling charge density wave phase. Understanding of this parent charge order phase is crucial for deciphering the entire phase diagram. However, the mechanism of the charge density wave is still controversial, and its primary source of fluctuations - the collective modes - have not been experimentally observed. Here, we use ultrashort laser pulses to melt the charge order in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ and record the resulting dynamics using femtosecond angle-resolved photoemission. We resolve the melting time of the charge order and directly observe its amplitude mode, imposing a fundamental limit for the fastest possible lattice rearrangement time. These observations together with ab-initio calculations provide clear evidence for a structural rather than electronic mechanism of the charge density wave. Many functionally relevant ferroic phenomena in quantum materials can be manipulated by driving the lattice coherently with optical and terahertz pulses. New physical phenomena and non-equilibrium phases that have no equilibrium counterpart have been discovered following these protocols. The underlying structural dynamics has been mostly studied by recording the average atomic position along dynamical structural coordinates with elastic scattering methods. However, crystal lattice fluctuations, which are known to influence phase transitions in equilibrium, are also expected to determine these dynamics but have rarely been explored. Here, we study the driven dynamics of the quantum paraelectric SrTiO3, in which mid-infrared drives have been shown to induce a metastable ferroelectric state. Crucial in these physics is the competition between the polar instability and antiferrodistortive rotations, which in equilibrium frustrate the formation of long-range ferroelectricity. We make use of high intensity mid-infrared optical pulses to resonantly drive a Ti-O stretching mode at 17 THz, and we measure the resulting change in lattice fluctuations using time-resolved x-ray diffuse scattering at a free electron laser. After a prompt increase, we observe a long-lived quench in R-point antiferrodistortive lattice fluctuations. The enhancement and reduction in lattice fluctuations are explained theoretically by considering fourth-order nonlinear phononic interactions and third-order coupling to the driven optical phonon and to lattice strain, respectively. These observations provide a number of new and testable hypotheses for the physics of light-induced ferroelectricity.

Tailored light excitation and nonlinear control of lattice vibrations have emerged as powerful strategies to manipulate the properties of quantum materials out of equilibrium. Generalizing the use of coherent phonon-phonon interactions to nonlinear couplings among other types of collective modes would open unprecedented opportunities in the design of novel dynamic functionalities in solids. For example, the collective excitations of magnetic order -- magnons -- can carry information with little energy dissipation, and their coherent and nonlinear control would provide an attractive route to achieve collective-mode-based information processing and storage in forthcoming spintronics and magnonics. Here, we discover that intense terahertz (THz) fields can initiate processes of magnon upconversion mediated by an intermediate magnetic resonance. By using a suite of advanced spectroscopic tools, including a newly demonstrated two-dimensional (2D) THz polarimetry technique enabled by single-shot detection, we unveil the unidirectional nature of coupling between distinct magnon modes of a canted antiferromagnet. Calculations of spin dynamics further suggest that this coupling is a universal feature of antiferromagnets with canted magnetic moments. These results demonstrate a route to inducing desirable energy transfer pathways and THz-induced coupling between coherent magnons in solids and pave the way for a new era in the development of ultrafast control of magnetism.

In quantum materials, degeneracies and frustrated interactions can have a profound impact on the emergence of long-range order, often driving strong fluctuations that suppress functionally relevant electronic or magnetic phases. Engineering the atomic structure in the bulk or at heterointerfaces has been an important research strategy to lift these degeneracies, but these equilibrium methods are limited by thermodynamic, elastic, and chemical constraints. Here, we show that all-optical, mode-selective manipulation of the crystal lattice can be used to enhance and stabilize high-temperature ferromagnetism in YTiO$_3$, a material that exhibits only partial orbital polarization, an unsaturated low-temperature magnetic moment, and a suppressed Curie temperature, $T_c$ = 27 K. The enhancement is largest when exciting a 9 THz oxygen rotation mode, for which complete magnetic saturation is achieved at low temperatures and transient ferromagnetism is realized up to $T_{neq} >$ 80 K, nearly three times the thermodynamic transition temperature. First-principles and model calculations of the nonlinear phonon-orbital-spin coupling reveal that these effects originate from dynamical changes to the orbital polarization and the makeup of the lowest quasi-degenerate Ti $t_{2g}$ levels. Notably, light-induced high temperature ferromagnetism in YTiO$_3$ is found to be metastable over many nanoseconds, underscoring the ability to dynamically engineer practically useful non-equilibrium functionalities., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

The chemical bond is one of the most powerful, yet controversial concepts in chemistry, explaining property trends in solids. Recently, a novel type of chemical bonding has been identified in several higher chalcogenides, characterized by a unique property portfolio, unconventional bond breaking and sharing of about one electron between adjacent atoms. Metavalent bonding is a fundamental type of bonding besides covalent, ionic and metallic bonding, raising the pertinent question, if there is a well-defined transition between metavalent and covalent bonding. For three different pseudo-binary lines, namely GeTe1-xSex, Sb2Te3(1-x)Se3x and Bi2-2xSb2xSe3, a sudden drop in several properties, including the optical dielectric constant, the Born effective charge, the electrical conductivity as well as the bond breaking is observed once a critical Se or Sb concentration is reached. This finding provides a blueprint to explore the impact of metavalent bonding on attractive properties utilized in phase change materials and thermoelectrics.

Non-linear interactions between collective modes play a definitive role in far out of equilibrium dynamics of strongly correlated electron systems. Understanding and utilizing these interactions is crucial to photo-control of quantum many-body states. One of the most surprising examples of strong mode coupling is the interaction between apical oxygen phonons and Josephson plasmons in bilayer YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ superconductors. Experiments by Hu et al (2014). and Kaiser et al. (2014) showed that below Tc, photo-excitation of phonons leads to enhancement and frequency shifts of Josephson plasmon edges, while aboveTc, photo-excited phonons induce plasmon edges even when there are no discernible features in the equilibrium reflectivity spectrum. Recent experiments by Van Hoegen et al. (2019) also observed parametric generation of Josephson plasmons from photo-excited phonons both below Tc and in the pseudogap phase. In this paper we present a theoretical model of phonon-plasmon three wave interaction arising from coupling between the oxygen motion and the in-plane superfluid stiffness. Analysis of the parametric instability of plasmons based on this model gives frequencies of the most unstable plasmons that are in agreement with experimental observations. We also discuss how strong parametric excitation of Josephson plasmons can explain pump induced changes in the TeraHertz reflectivity of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ in the superconducting state, including frequency shifts and sharpening of Josephson plasmon edges, as well as appearance of a new peak around 2THz. An interesting feature of this model is that overdamped Josephson plasmons do not give any discernible features in reflectivity in equilibrium, but can develop plasmon edges when parametrically excited. We suggest that this mechanism explains photo-induced plasmon edges in the pseudogap phase of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$., Comment: 21 papers, 17 figures

The possibility of enhancing desirable functional properties of complex materials by optical driving is motivating a series of studies of their nonlinear terahertz response. In high-Tc cuprates, large amplitude excitation of certain infrared-active lattice vibrations has been shown to induce transient features in the reflectivity suggestive of non-equilibrium superconductivity. Yet, a microscopic mechanism for these observations is still lacking. Here, we report measurements of time- and scattering-angle-dependent second-harmonic generation in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, taken under the same excitation conditions that result in superconductor-like terahertz reflectivity. We discover a three-order-of-magnitude amplification of a 2.5-terahertz electronic mode, which is unique because of its symmetry, momentum, and temperature dependence. A theory for parametric three-wave amplification of Josephson plasmons, which are assumed to be well-formed below T$_c$ but overdamped throughout the pseudogap phase, explains all these observations and provides a mechanism for non-equilibrium superconductivity. The realization of the unusual properties of 2-d materials requires the formation of large domains of single layer thickness, extending over the mesoscale. It is found that the formation of ideal graphene on SiC, contrary to textbook diffraction , is signaled by a strong bell-shaped-component (BSC) around the (00) and G(10), but not the SiC(10) spots.The BSC is also seen for graphene on metals, because single layer uniform graphene with large lateral size can also be grown. It is only seen by electron diffraction and not with X-ray or He-scattering experiments. Most likely it originates from the spatial confinement of the graphene electrons within a single layer. This leads to a large spread in their wavevector, which is transferred through electron-electron interactions to the elastically scattered electrons to generate the BSC.

Femtosecond laser excitation of solid-state systems creates non-equilibrium hot electrons that cool down by transferring their energy to other degrees of freedom and ultimately to lattice vibrations of the solid. By combining ab initio calculations with ultrafast diffuse electron scattering we gain a detailed understanding of the complex non-equilibrium energy transfer between electrons and phonons in laser-excited Ni metal. Our experimental results show that the wavevector resolved population dynamics of phonon modes is distinctly different throughout the Brillouin zone and are in remarkable agreement with our theoretical results. We find that zone-boundary phonon modes become occupied first. As soon as the energy in these modes becomes larger than the average electron energy a backflow of energy from lattice to electronic degrees of freedom occurs. Subsequent excitation of lower-energy phonon modes drives the thermalization of the whole system on the picosecond timescale. We determine the evolving non-equilibrium phonon occupations which we find to deviate markedly from thermal occupations.

Femtosecond optical pulses at mid-infrared frequencies have opened up the nonlinear control of lattice vibrations in solids. So far, all applications have relied on second order phonon nonlinearities, which are dominant at field strengths near 1 MVcm-1. In this regime, nonlinear phononics can transiently change the average lattice structure, and with it the functionality of a material. Here, we achieve an order-of-magnitude increase in field strength, and explore higher-order lattice nonlinearities. We drive up to five phonon harmonics of the A1 mode in LiNbO3. Phase-sensitive measurements of atomic trajectories in this regime are used to experimentally reconstruct the interatomic potential and to benchmark ab-initio calculations for this material. Tomography of the Free Energy surface by high-order nonlinear phononics will impact many aspects of materials research, including the study of classical and quantum phase transitions.

In this paper we propose an anisotropic extension of the isotropic exponentiated Hencky energy, based on logarithmic strain invariants. Unlike other elastic formulations, the isotropic exponentiated Hencky elastic energy has been derived solely on differential geometric grounds, involving the geodesic distance of the deformation gradient F to the group of rotations. We formally extend this approach towards anisotropy by defining additional anisotropic logarithmic strain invariants with the help of suitable structural tensors and consider our findings for selected case studies., Comment: submitted to Computational Mechanics

Resonant optical excitation of apical oxygen vibrational modes in the normal state of underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x induces a transient state with optical properties similar to those of the equilibrium superconducting state. Amongst these, a divergent imaginary conductivity and a plasma edge are transiently observed in the photo-stimulated state. Femtosecond hard x-ray diffraction experiments have been used in the past to identify the transient crystal structure in this non-equilibrium state. Here, we start from these crystallographic features and theoretically predict the corresponding electronic rearrangements that accompany these structural deformations. Using density functional theory, we predict enhanced hole-doping of the CuO2 planes. The empty chain Cu dy2-z2 orbital is calculated to strongly reduce in energy, which would increase c-axis transport and potentially enhance the interlayer Josephson coupling as observed in the THz-frequency response. From these calculations, we predict changes in the soft x-ray absorption spectra at the Cu L-edge. Femtosecond x-ray pulses from a free electron laser are used to probe these changes in absorption at two photon energies along this spectrum, and provide data consistent with these predictions., Comment: 20 pages with 6 figures

The ability to manipulate ferroelectrics at ultrafast speeds has long been an elusive target for materials research. Coherently exciting the ferroelectric mode with ultrashort optical pulses holds the promise to switch the ferroelectric polarization on femtosecond timescale, two orders of magnitude faster compared to what is possible today with pulsed electric fields. Here, we report on the demonstration of ultrafast optical reversal of the ferroelectric polarization in LiNbO3. Rather than driving the ferroelectric mode directly, we couple to it indirectly by resonant excitation of an auxiliary high-frequency phonon mode with femtosecond mid-infrared pulses. Due to strong anharmonic coupling between these modes, the atoms are directionally displaced along the ferroelectric mode and the polarization is transiently reversed, as revealed by time-resolved, phase-sensitive second-harmonic generation. This reversal can be induced in both directions, a key pre-requisite for practical applications.

Many chalcogenide glasses undergo a breakdown in electronic resistance above a critical field strength. Known as threshold switching, this mechanism enables field-induced crystallization in emerging phase-change memory. Purely electronic as well as crystal nucleation assisted models have been employed to explain the electronic breakdown. Here, picosecond electric pulses are used to excite amorphous Ag$_4$In$_3$Sb$_{67}$Te$_{26}$. Field-dependent reversible changes in conductivity and pulse-driven crystallization are observed. The present results show that threshold switching can take place within the electric pulse on sub-picosecond time-scales - faster than crystals can nucleate. We have used Low Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM) and Photo Emission Electron Microscopy (PEEM) to study and improve the quality of graphene films grown on Ir(111) using chemical vapor deposition (CVD). CVD at elevated temperature already yields graphene sheets that are uniform and of monatomic thickness. Besides domains that are aligned with respect to the substrate, other rotational variants grow. Cyclic growth exploiting the faster growth and etch rates of the rotational variants, yields films that are 99 % composed of aligned domains. Precovering the substrate with a high density of graphene nuclei prior to CVD yields pure films of aligned domains extending over millimeters. Such films can be used to prepare cluster-graphene hybrid materials for catalysis or nanomagnetism and can potentially be combined with lift-off techniques to yield high-quality, graphene based electronic devices.
