Germany’s memoryscape is transforming. Long structured by a focus on the Nazi past and the Holocaust, in which other memories tended to be marginalized out of concern that they might relativize this terrible history, it is increasingly incorporating – and being changed by – other strands of collective remembrance. In particular, Germany’s socialist and colonial pasts, and its multiple histories of migration are gaining significant public presence. How do these mnemonic impulses come together and interact? What are the implications for the dynamics of public remembering? Dieses Essay argumentiert für den Wert einer genuin transnationalen, postmigrantischen Perspektive auf Erinnerungskultur. Das bedeutet konkret, über einen auf Deutschland beschränkten Diskurs- und Narrativraum hinaus historisch gewachsene Verstrickungen in den Blick zu nehmen und Migrationsbewegungen vor dem Hintergrund transnationaler Gewaltgeschichte sowie geo- und sicherheitspolitischer Beziehungen zu analysieren. Denn diese Beziehungen und Verflechtungen haben innenpolitische Auswirkungen, die sich auch im Bereich der Erinnerungs- und Gedenkpolitik manifestieren. Das Essay bietet eine Besprechung jüngerer anglo-amerikanischer kulturanthropologischer Literatur zum Themenfeld Migration und Erinnerungskultur. Darin formulierte Erkenntnisse zur Ko-Artikulation von Vergangenheitsbewältigung und Rassismus werden um zwei Dimensionen erweitert: einerseits um das Agieren und die Auswirkungen 'fremder', in diesem Fall türkischer, Staatlichkeit und ihrer Ideologien, und anderseits um transnationale, kritische und oppositionelle Graswurzelarbeit im Bereich der Erinnerungsarbeit. Der ethnografische Blick auf diese empirische Komplexität erlaubt es, Deutschland hinsichtlich eines Anspruchs auf Begründung und 'Export' der Vergangenheitsbewältigung – aber auch darüber hinaus – zu dezentrieren und zu provinzialisieren., This essay argues for a genuinely transnational, postmigrant perspective on the culture of remembrance. This means going beyond a discourse and narrative space limited to Germany to look at historically evolved entanglements and to analyze migration movements against the backdrop of transnational histories of violence and geopolitical and security relations. These relationships and entanglements have domestic political effects, which also manifest themselves in the field of memory politics. The essay offers a review of recent Anglo-American cultural anthropological literature on migration and remembrance cultures. The findings formulated in the reviewed texts, on the co-articulation of coming to terms with the past and racism, are expanded to include two dimensions. On the one hand, the actions and effects of ‘foreign’, in this case Turkish, statehood and its ideologies, and on the other, transnational, critical, and oppositional grassroots work in the field of remembrance. The ethnographic view of this empirical complexity makes it possible to decenter and provincialize Germany with regard to a claim to justification and ‘export’ of coming to terms with the past (Vergangenheitsbewältigung) – but also beyond that., Peer Reviewed
