Abstract

Large-scale optical neutrino and dark-matter detectors rely on large-area photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) for cost-effective light detection. The new R14688-100 8-inch PMT developed by Hamamatsu provides state-of-the-art timing resolution of around 1 ns (FWHM), which can help improve vertex reconstruction and enable Cherenkov and scintillation light separation in scintillation-based detectors. This PMT also provides excellent charge resolution, allowing for precision photoelectron counting and improved energy reconstruction. The Eos experiment is the first large-scale optical detector to utilize these PMTs. In this manuscript we present a characterization of the R14688-100 single photoelectron response, such as the transit-time spreads, the dark-rates, and the afterpulsing. The single photoelectron response measurements are performed for the 206 PMTs that will be used in Eos.

Abstract

Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) are solid-state, single-photon sensitive, pixelated sensors whose usage for scintillation detection has rapidly increased over the past decade. It is known that the avalanche process within the device, which renders a single photon detectable, can also generate secondary photons which may be detected by a separate device. This effect, known as external crosstalk, could potentially degrade the science goals of future xenon dark matter experiments. In this article, we measure the effect of external crosstalk in a dual-phase, liquid xenon time projection chamber fully instrumented with SiPMs. We then consider the implications for a future xenon dark matter experiment utilizing SiPMs and discuss possible solutions.

Abstract

CUPID is a next-generation bolometric experiment aiming at searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay with ∼250 kg of isotopic mass of 100Mo. It will operate at ∼10 mK in a cryostat currently hosting a similar-scale bolometric array for the CUORE experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy). CUPID will be based on large-volume scintillating bolometers consisting of 100Mo-enriched Li2MoO4 crystals, facing thin Ge-wafer-based bolometric light detectors. In the CUPID design, the detector structure is novel and needs to be validated. In particular, the CUORE cryostat presents a high level of mechanical vibrations due to the use of pulse tubes and the effect of vibrations on the detector performance must be investigated. In this paper we report the first test of the CUPID-design bolometric light detectors with NTD-Ge sensors in a dilution refrigerator equipped with a pulse tube in an above-ground lab. Light detectors are characterized in terms of sensitivity, energy resolution, pulse time constants, and noise power spectrum. Despite the challenging noisy environment due to pulse-tube-induced vibrations, we demonstrate that all the four tested light detectors comply with the CUPID goal in terms of intrinsic energy resolution of 100 eV RMS baseline noise. Indeed, we have measured 70-90 eV RMS for the four devices, which show an excellent reproducibility. We have also obtained high energy resolutions at the 356 keV line from a 133Ba source, as good as Ge semiconductor γ detectors in this energy range.

Abstract

The D-Egg, an acronym for "Dual optical sensors in an Ellipsoid Glass for Gen2,"is one of the optical modules designed for future extensions of the IceCube experiment at the South Pole. The D-Egg has an elongated-sphere shape to maximize the photon-sensitive effective area while maintaining a narrow diameter to reduce the cost and the time needed for drilling of the deployment holes in the glacial ice for the optical modules at depths up to 2700 m. The D-Egg design is utilized for the IceCube Upgrade, the next stage of the IceCube project also known as IceCube-Gen2 Phase 1, where nearly half of the optical sensors to be deployed are D-Eggs. With two 8-inch high-quantum efficiency photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) per module, D-Eggs offer an increased effective area while retaining the successful design of the IceCube digital optical module (DOM). The convolution of the wavelength-dependent effective area and the Cherenkov emission spectrum provides an effective photodetection sensitivity that is 2.8 times larger than that of IceCube DOMs. The signal of each of the two PMTs is digitized using ultra-low-power 14-bit analog-to-digital converters with a sampling frequency of 240 MSPS, enabling a flexible event triggering, as well as seamless and lossless event recording of single-photon signals to multi-photons exceeding 200 photoelectrons within 10 ns. Mass production of D-Eggs has been completed, with 277 out of the 310 D-Eggs produced to be used in the IceCube Upgrade. In this paper, we report the design of the D-Eggs, as well as the sensitivity and the single to multi-photon detection performance of mass-produced D-Eggs measured in a laboratory using the built-in data acquisition system in each D-Egg optical sensor module.

Abstract

We describe improvements in CCD performance that have been achieved on 4k×4k, (15 μm)2-pixel, fully depleted CCDs for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) [1]. With respect to our previous work on CCDs for the Dark Energy Camera and the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, our goals for the DESI CCD development were to improve read noise and quantum efficiency, improve the astrometric precision, and decrease pixel-size variations. We report experimental results on recently fabricated CCDs to be used in DESI.

Abstract

Microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) are typically readout using custom high-speed electronics and firmware, a challenging and time-intensive undertaking. We have developed a readout system for these devices using a software defined radio (SDR), a software implementation of radiofrequency signal processing. The SDR allows use of pre-existing software libraries and minimizes specialized firmware coding, a significant reduction in effort. We customized our SDR to readout mm and optical band MKIDs with resonant frequencies of 1.8-2 GHz and 2-2.2 GHz respectively. We used this readout system to measure the sensitivity of our MKIDs devices to visible light. We show that SDRs are a good candidate for small pixel count MKIDs readout systems, and make recommendations for readout systems for larger Pixel count arrays.

Abstract

FRAM (F/Photometric Robotic Atmospheric Monitor) is a robotic telescope operated at the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina for the purposes of atmospheric monitoring using stellar photometry. As a passive system which does not produce any light that could interfere with the observations of the fluorescence telescopes of the observatory, it complements the active monitoring systems that use lasers. We discuss the applications of stellar photometry for atmospheric monitoring at optical observatories in general and the particular modes of operation employed by the Auger FRAM. Abstract

In this article we report a novel phenomenon that we observed while evaluating the performances of different models of silicon photomultiplier detectors at liquid nitrogen temperature. Bursts of consecutive events, characterized by a rate that is about 100 times that of the single-event uncorrelated dark counts, are generated within the SiPMs, resulting in an overall increase of the dark current. We observed these bursts in the vast majority of the tested SiPM models manifactured by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. This observation is part of an effort to fully characterise the behaviour of SiPMs at cryogenic temperature. The investigation of this phenomenon, of which a first attempt is presented in this article, can impact future production and selection of models for both high energy physics and industrial applications.

Abstract

This paper presented a new detector module consisting of a micropixel avalanche photodiode (MAPD-3NM), LaBr3:Ce scintillator, and a compact read-out interface system for detecting gamma-rays in a wide energy range. The MAPD array (4 x 4 channels) was assembled using a single MAPD-3NM characterized by its high photon detection efficiency (similar to 25%), pixel density (10000 pixel s/mm(2)), low operation voltage (74.5 V), and low dark current. An active area of a single MAPD-3NM was 3.7 x 3.7 mm(2), while this value was 17 x 17 mm(2) for the assembled array with pixel density of 2190000. The size of the tested LaBr3:Ce scintillator was 15 x 15 x 15 mm(3). According to the characteristics of the detector module, a compact read-out interface device (SPECTRIG MAPD) was developed. SPECTRIG MAPD was designed as a miniature device with low power consumption, which continues to provide a wide spectrum of functions needed for measurement and test silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) and scintillation detectors on their basis. The various experiments were implemented to test the detection performance of a detector module to gamma radiation in the range from 30 keV to 4400 keV.

Abstract

The performances of silicon photomultipliers with different structures are investigated at low temperature.The first sample is a micro pixel avalanche photodiode with deep buried pixel structure from Zecotek Photonics Inc. The second and third ones are multi-pixel photo counters with a surface pixel design from Hamamatsu Photonics. The influence of temperature on the main parameters of the photodiodes such as photon detection efficiency (PDE), gain, and capacitance was studied in the temperature range from 0C to -120C.

Abstract

We present the design of the first prototype of MIRA (MIcro-channel plate Readout ASIC) that has been designed to read out Micro-Channel Plates (MCP), in particular for UV spectroscopy. MIRA will be able to detect the cloud of electrons generated by each photon interacting with the MCP, sustaining high local and global count rates to fully exploit the MCP intrinsic dynamic range with low dead time. The main rationale that guided the electronics design is the reduction of the input Equivalent Noise Charge (ENC) in order to allow operations with lower MCP gain, thus improving its lifetime, crucial aspect for long missions in space. MIRA features two selectable analog processing times, 133 ns or 280 ns (i.e. fast mode or slow mode), granting a count rate per pixel of 100 kcps. Moreover, it shows an Equivalent Noise Charge ENC = 17 e r m s − . A spatial resolution of 35 μm and an operation with zero dead time, due to the readout, are targeted. The low noise, high count rate and high spatial resolution requirements are expected by keeping a compact pixel size (35 μm × 35 μm) for a total of 32 × 32 pixels in a 2 mm × 2 mm ASIC area. In this work, the ASIC design is described.

Abstract

This work presents a customized 110 nm CMOS process on high-resistivity substrate tailored for the production of fully-depleted pixel sensors. Starting from n-type substrates, customized surface implantations have been introduced to enable fast and efficient collection of the charge generated by ionizing particles or radiation. Double-sided processing has been used to define the backside electrode and the termination structures needed to bias the sensors at high voltage. A first run showing the feasibility of 300 μm-thick fully-depleted sensors was completed, and several test devices designed for the assessment of the process were fabricated together with a 24 × 24 pixels array with 50 μm pitch. The main technological challenges and the customization of the process are discussed, and electrical measurements on test devices demonstrating the functionality of the termination structures, the full depletion of the substrate and the fast charge collection are presented.

Abstract

EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25(th) of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Finally, we present a first reconstruction of the direction of the laser tracks relative to the detector., QC 20180903

Abstract

EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder mission for the Extreme Universe Space Observatory onboard the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO). It was launched on the moonless night of the 25th of August 2014 from Timmins, Canada. The flight ended successfully after maintaining the target altitude of 38 km for five hours. One part of the mission was a 2.5 hour underflight using a helicopter equipped with three UV light sources (LED, xenon flasher and laser) to perform an inflight calibration and examine the detectors capability to measure tracks moving at the speed of light. We describe the helicopter laser system and details of the underflight as well as how the laser tracks were recorded and found in the data. These are the first recorded laser tracks measured from a fluorescence detector looking down on the atmosphere. Abstract

International audience; We report on the cryogenic characterization of Red Green Blue - High Density (RGB-HD) SiPMs developed at Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) as part of the DarkSide program of dark matter searches with liquid argon time projection chambers. A cryogenic setup was used to operate the SiPMs at varying temperatures and a custom data acquisition system and analysis software were used to precisely characterize the primary dark noise, the correlated noise, and the gain of the devices. We demonstrate that FBK RGB-HD SiPMs with low quenching resistance (RGB-HD-LRq) can be operated from 40 K to 300 K with gains in the range 10(5) to 10(6) and noise rates at a level of around 1 Hz/mm(2).

Abstract

© 2017 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl. We describe improvements in CCD performance that have been achieved on 4k×4k, (15 μm)2-pixel, fully depleted CCDs for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) [1]. With respect to our previous work on CCDs for the Dark Energy Camera and the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, our goals for the DESI CCD development were to improve read noise and quantum efficiency, improve the astrometric precision, and decrease pixel-size variations. We report experimental results on recently fabricated CCDs to be used in DESI.

Abstract

We have studied the calibration of PMTs in scintillation detectors, inducing single electron response on the PMT from primary scintillation produced by x-ray interaction. The results agree with those obtained by the commonly used single electron response (SER) method, which uses LED light pulses to induce the PMT SER. The use of the primary scintillation for PMT calibration will be convenient in situations where the PMT is already in situ, when it becomes difficult or even impossible to apply the SER method, e.g. in commercial sealed scintillator/PMT devices. Furthermore, we have experimentally investigated the possibility of fitting the high-charge tail of the PMT SER pulse-height distribution to an exponential function, inferring the PMT gain from the inverse of the exponent. The results of the exponential fit method agree with those obtained by the SER method for pulse-height distributions resulting from an average number of around 1.0 photoelectrons reaching the first dynode per light/scintillation pulse. The SER method has higher precision and, therefore, is used in a larger number of applications. Nevertheless, the exponential fit method will be useful in situations where the single photoelectron peak is under the background or noise peak and it may present an alternative, simple way, for relative gain calibration of PMT arrays as well as for monitoring the PMT gain variations.

Abstract

International audience; The SPACIROC ASIC is designed for the JEM-EUSO observatory onboard of the International Space Station (ISS). This 64 channels readout ASIC offers photon counting capability and includes a charge to time (Q-to-T) converter. The main requirement for the photon counting is to obtain a 100% trigger efficiency starting from 1/3 photoelectron (p.e.) with a 10 ns double pulse resolution. As for the Q-to-T converter, the chip needs to deliver a linear measurement for the input charges ranging from 10 p.e. to 1500 p.e. Moreover, the ASIC was designed to achieve low power consumption (1mW/channel) and radiation tolerance, in compliance with the operating constraints imposed by the ISS. The current design of the ASIC was done in collaboration with RIKEN, Japan on behalf of the JEM-EUSO consortium.

Abstract

Non-equilibrium plasma generated by nanosecond pulsed laser are characterized by solid state 4H-SiC interdigit Schottky diodes and by a large area ion collector detector, both connected in time-of-flight configuration. Plasma generated by irradiation of different metallic targets through a pulsed laser with a 1010 W/cm2 intensity and a 200 mJ energy, where monitored. In this paper we demonstrate that the interdigit 4H-SiC diode is able to detect ultraviolet radiation and soft X-rays, with energy of the order of 20 eV with very short rise time, of a few nanoseconds, and high efficiency, comparable with the performance of traditional large area ion collectors. Thanks to their millimetric size, solid state 4H-SiC detectors are good candidates for the fabrication of array systems for the spatial distribution measurement of plasma radiation. Moreover, owing to the their high efficiency and the interdigit geometry of front electrode, 4H-SiC diodes here proposed are suitable also for low energy ions detection.

Abstract

We have studied the calibration of PMTs in scintillation detectors, inducing single electron response on the PMT from primary scintillation produced by x-ray interaction. The results agree with those obtained by the commonly used single electron response (SER) method, which uses LED light pulses to induce the PMT SER. The use of the primary scintillation for PMT calibration will be convenient in situations where the PMT is already in situ, when it becomes difficult or even impossible to apply the SER method, e.g. in commercial sealed scintillator/PMT devices. Furthermore, we have experimentally investigated the possibility of fitting the high-charge tail of the PMT SER pulse-height distribution to an exponential function, inferring the PMT gain from the inverse of the exponent. The results of the exponential fit method agree with those obtained by the SER method for pulse-height distributions resulting from an average number of around 1.0 photoelectrons reaching the first dynode per light/scintillation pulse. The SER method has higher precision and, therefore, is used in a larger number of applications. Abstract

The CAEN V1751 is a new generation of Waveform Digitizer recently introduced by CAEN SpA. It features 8 Channels per board, 10 bit, 1 GS/s using Flash ADCs Waveform Digitizers (or 4 channels at 2 GS/s in Dual Edge Sampling mode) with threshold and Auto-Trigger capabilities. This provides a good basis for data acquisition in Dark Matter searches using PMTs to detect scintillation light in liquid argon, as it matches the requirements for measuring the fast scintillation component. The board was tested by operating it in real experimental conditions and by comparing it with a state of the art digital oscilloscope. We find that the sampling at 1 or 2 GS/s is appropriate for the reconstruction of the fast component of the scintillation light in argon (characteristic time of about 6-7 ns) and the extended dynamic range, after a small customization, allows for the detection of signals in the range of energy needed. The bandwidth is found to be adequate and the intrinsic noise is very low., Comment: Published in Journal of Instrumentation

The LHCb experiment is dedicated to precision measurements of CP violation and rare decays of B hadrons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN (Geneva). The initial configuration and expected performance of the detector and associated systems, as established by test beam measurements and simulation studies, is described.

Abstract

We are developing gaseous photon detectors for Cherenkov imaging applications in the experiments at the future Electron Ion Collider. CsI, converting photons in the far ultraviolet range, is, so far, the only photoconverter compatible with the operation of gaseous detectors. It is very delicate to handle due to its hygroscopic nature: the absorbed water vapour decomposes the CsI molecule. In addition, its quantum efficiency degrades under ion bombardment. These are the key reasons to quest for novel, less delicate materials for photocathodes adequate for gaseous photon detectors. Layers of hydrogenated nanodiamond particles have recently been proposed as an alternative material and have shown promising characteristics. The performance of nanodiamond photocathodes coupled to thick GEM-based detectors is the objects of our ongoing R&D. The first phase of these studies includes the characterization of thick GEM coated with nanodiamond layers and the robustness of its photoconverting properties with respect to the bombardment by ions from the multiplication process in the gaseous detector. The approach is described in detail as well as all the results obtained so far within these exploratory studies.
