This article discusses the misconceptions surrounding the use of facepiece masks for protection against viral aerosols. It explains that facepiece masks can effectively capture viral aerosols through mechanisms such as impaction, interception, diffusion, and electrophoresis. Screening clinics play a major role in preventing the transmission of infectious diseases. The main problem that should be addressed is the exposure to cross-infection between healthcare workers and individuals intended to be tested. In this study, a noncontact modular screening clinic (NCMSC) was developed that addresses the problems of existing screening clinics and the risks of cross-contamination during the infectious disease sampling process. The space and ventilation system of the NCMSC were designed to effectively remove viral aerosols to avoid cross-contamination. The spatial configurations that enabled noncontact specimen sampling and pressure differential control was achieved. Regarding the measurement method with the use of tracer gas, an experimental field test framework and procedure that can evaluate the cross-contamination between rooms were presented. It is the observation of pollutants (tracer gas) in two different modes (normal breathing and AGP from a patient) in a screening clinic with ventilation, compared to the room next door, where the HCW is located. Additionally, based on onsite experiments using SF6 tracer gas that mimics the viral aerosol at an actual scale, it was verified that no cross-contamination occurred in the NCMSC; accordingly, it was possible to protect sufficiently the healthcare workers. It will be possible to use the outcomes of this study as basic data for the development of standards for the installation and operation of screening clinics for infectious diseases.

Bipolar ionization (BPI) of indoor air has emerged as a widely implemented bulk-air disinfection technology to reduce human exposure to airborne viruses. This study presents BPI-mediated decay rate constants for the inactivation and deposition of infectious viral aerosols. Rate constants are estimated for the enveloped bacteriophage Ф6, a common SARS-CoV-2 surrogate, at low (∼25 %), medium (∼50 %) and high (∼75 %) relative humidity (RH) levels under bipolar ion concentrations of 106 ions/cm3. Enhanced BPI-facilitated viral inactivation rate constants of 4.6, 6.9, and 7.6 h −1 under low, middle, and high RH, respectively, are reported. BPI-mediated infectious decay and deposition rates for aerosolized Ф6 were RH-dependent, with significant increases from low to high RH (p < 0.05). The routes of COVID-19 transmission to healthcare personnel from infected patients is the subject of debate, but is critical to the selection of personal protective equipment. The objective of this paper was to explore the contributions of three transmission routes—contact, droplet, and inhalation—to the risk of occupationally acquired COVID-19 infection among healthcare personnel (HCP). The method was quantitative microbial risk assessment, and an exposure model, where possible model parameters were based on data specific to the SARS-CoV-2 virus when available. The key finding was that droplet and inhalation transmission routes predominate over the contact route, contributing 35%, 57%, and 8.2% of the probability of infection, on average, without use of personal protective equipment. On average, 80% of inhalation exposure occurs when HCP are near patients. The relative contribution of droplet and inhalation depends upon the emission of SARS-CoV-2 in respirable particles (<10 µm) through exhaled breath, and inhalation becomes predominant, on average, when emission exceeds five gene copies per min. The predicted concentration of SARS-CoV-2 in the air of the patient room is low (< 1 gene copy per m3 on average), and likely below the limit of quantification for many air sampling methods. The findings demonstrate the value of respiratory protection for HCP, and that field sampling may not be sensitive enough to verify the contribution of SARS-CoV-2 inhalation to the risk of occupationally acquired COVID-19 infection among healthcare personnel. Bubble bursting is a common phenomenon in many industrial and natural processes, plays an important role in mediating mass transfer across the water-air interface. But the interplay between bubbles and pathogens remains unclear and the mechanisms of virus aerosolization by the bubble properties have not been well studied. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the water-to-air transfer of viruses by bubbles of different sizes. Unlike the dominant view of smaller bubbles less bioaerosols, it was found that the smaller bubbles could generate significantly more viral aerosols regardless of the virus species (Phi6, MS2, PhiX174, and T7), when the Sauter mean bubble diameters were between 0.56 and 1.65 mm under constant aeration flow rate. The mechanism studies denied the possibilities of more aerosols or better dispersion of viruses in the aerosols generated by the smaller bubbles. However, deeper bubbling could transfer more viruses to the air for MS2, PhiX174, and T7. Their concentrations in aerosols were linearly related to the bubbling depth for these non-enveloped viruses, which demonstrates the bubble-scavenging effect as a main mechanism except for the enveloped virus Phi6. Whereas, unlike these three non-enveloped viruses, Phi6 could survive relatively better in the aerosols generated from the smaller bubbles, though the enhancement of aerosolization by the smaller bubbles was much larger than the improvement of survival. Other mechanisms still remain unknown for this enveloped virus. This study suggests that the attempt of decreasing the bubble size in aeration tank of the wastewater treatment plant might significantly increase the solubility of oxygen as well as the risk of viral aerosols. Frequent outbreaks of viral diseases have brought substantial negative impacts on society and the economy, and they are very difficult to detect, as the concentration of viral aerosols in the air is low and the composition is complex. The traditional detection method is manually collection and re-detection, being cumbersome and time-consuming. Here we propose a virus aerosol detection method based on microfluidic inertial separation and spectroscopic analysis technology to rapidly and accurately detect aerosol particles in the air. The microfluidic chip is designed based on the principles of inertial separation and laminar flow characteristics, resulting in an average separation efficiency of 95.99% for 2 μm particles. We build a microfluidic chip composite spectrometer detection platform to capture the spectral information on aerosol particles dynamically. By employing machine-learning techniques, we can accurately classify different types of aerosol particles. The entire experiment took less than 30 min as compared with hours by PCR detection. Furthermore, our model achieves an accuracy of 97.87% in identifying virus aerosols, which is comparable to the results obtained from PCR detection.

Viral aerosol infection through cough generates large amounts of viral aerosol and can result in many adverse health effects such as influenza flu and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). To characterize the coughed viral aerosol, the sampler needs to sample at higher flow rate and possess high physical collection efficiency as well as high viral preservation. However, most current inertia-based high flow bioaerosol samplers are not suited for viral aerosol sampling since the viability will be lost doing the sampling process. Current condensation growth methods only have good physical collection efficiency and viral preservation at low flow rate (< 10 LPM). In this study, we developed a viral aerosol sampling system using a cooler and steam-jet aerosol collector (SJAC) for bioaerosol collection for the first time. The system is based on mixing condensation growth method and has high viral preservation at a higher flow rate (12.5 LPM). We control the inlet aerosol flow temperature and the SJAC mixing reservoir temperature to improve the physical collection efficiency and viability preservation of the viral aerosol. Results indicate that the physical collection efficiency is 70–99% for aerosol 30–100 nm when the aerosol flow and mixing reservoir temperature was 19 and 50 °C, respectively. In addition, the system was 7 and 22 times more efficient for viability preservation of MS2 bacteriophage than the commonly used All Glass Impinger 30 (AGI-30) and BioSampler®, respectively. Finally, the system can be applied to sample at a lower concentration (105 PFU/m3), and results shows the system was 4.7 times more efficient for viability preservation than using AGI-30 alone. The developed viral collection system will improve our understanding of the characteristics of coughed aerosol and can be used for future evaluation of respiratory protective equipment and environmental sampling. The growing threat of an influenza pandemic presents a unique challenge to healthcare workers, emergency responders, and the civilian population. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)-approved respirators to provide protection against infectious airborne viruses in various workplace settings. The filtration efficiency of selected NIOSH-approved particulate N95 and P100 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) and filter cartridges was investigated against the viable MS2 virus, a non-pathogenic bacteriophage, aerosolized from a liquid suspension. Tests were performed under two cyclic flow conditions (minute volumes of 85 and 135 L/min) and two constant flow rates (85 and 270 L/min). The mean penetrations of viable MS2 through the N95 and P100 FFRs/cartridges were typically less than 2 and 0.03%, respectively, under all flow conditions. All N95 and P100 FFR and cartridge models assessed in this study, therefore, met or exceeded their respective efficiency ratings of 95 and 99.97% against the viable MS2 test aerosol, even under the very high flow conditions. These NIOSH-approved FFRs and particulate respirators equipped with these cartridges can be anticipated to achieve expected levels of protection (consistent with their assigned protection factor) against airborne viral agents, provided that they are properly selected, fitted, worn, and maintained. New viral disease such as SARS and H1N1 highlighted the vulnerability of healthcare workers to aerosol-transmitted viral infections. This paper was to assess the protection performance of different level personal respiratory protection equipments against viral aerosol. Surgical masks, N95 masks and N99 masks were purchased from the market. The masks were sealed onto the manikin in the aerosol testing chamber. Viral aerosol was generated and then sampled simultaneously before and after the tested mask using biosamplers. This allows a percentage efficiency value to be calculated against test phage SM702 aerosols which surrogates of viral pathogens aerosol. At the same time, the masks face fit factor was determined by TSI8020. The viral aerosol particles aerodynamic diameter was 0.744 μm, and GSD was 1.29. The protection performance of the material of all the tested masks against viral aerosol was all >95 %. All the five surgical masks face fit factor were <8. F model N95 mask and H model N99 mask face fit factor were all >160. G model N95 mask face fit factor was 8.2. The protection performances of N95 or N99 masks were many times higher than surgical mask when considering the face fit factor. Surgical masks cannot offer sufficient protection against the inhalation of viral aerosol because they cannot provide a close face seal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hospital-based outbreaks of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) have once again highlighted the vulnerability of healthcare workers (HCWs). Use of personal respiratory protective equipment was the main method used by HCWs to avoid nosocomial transmission. This paper describes the technology used to evaluate the filtration efficiency of the half-face medical protection mask (N99), manufactured by Firmshield Biotechnology, against viral aerosol. Viral aerosol was generated and then sampled simultaneously with and without the test mask. This enables a percentage efficiency value to be calculated against test phage f2 aerosols (surrogates of viral pathogen aerosols). At the same time the mask filtration efficiency against NaCl particle aerosol was determined by use of TSI8130 equipment and face-fit factor was tested by use of TSI8020 equipment. The half-face medical protection mask (N99) evaluated by use of the viral aerosol had a filtration efficiency >99%. The mask filtration efficiency against NaCl particle aerosol was 99.634 ± 0.024% and it had a good face-fit factor. This half-face medical protection mask (N99) can protect the wearer from viral aerosol disease transmission. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infections cause significant economic losses to swine producers every year. Aerosols containing infectious PRRSV are an important route of transmission, and proper treatment of air could mitigate the airborne spread of the virus within and between barns. Previous bioaerosol studies focused on the microbiology of PRRSV aerosols; thus, the current study addressed the engineering aspects of virus aerosolization and collection. Specific objectives were to (1) build and test a virus aerosolization system, (2) achieve a uniform and repeatable aerosol generation and collection throughout all replicates, (3) identify and minimize sources of variation, and (4) verify that the collection system (impingers) performed similarly. The system for virus aerosolization was built and tested (Obj. 1). The uniform airflow distribution was confirmed using a physical tracer (<12% relative standard deviation) for all treatments and sound engineering control of flow rates (Obj. 2). Theoretical uncertainty analyses and mass balance calculations showed <3% loss of air mass flow rate between the inlet and outlet (Obj. 3). A comparison of TCID 50 values among impinger fluids showed no statistical difference between any two of the three trials ( p -value = 0.148, 0.357, 0.846) (Obj. 4).
