Approximately 30% of students who enter the postsecondary education system do so through 2-year colleges. The majority of these students intend to earn a bachelor's degree, but most leave college before earning a diploma from a 4-year institution. The discrepancy between bachelor's degree aspirations and degree attainment rates of students who enter through 2-year colleges suggests that vertical transfer students—those who transfer from 2- to 4-year colleges—face unique obstacles to academic performance and retention that affect their likelihood of earning a bachelor's degree. Similar barriers exist for economically disadvantaged students, who may be more likely to enter the postsecondary education system through 2-year colleges. This scoping review synthesizes the literature on factors influencing economically disadvantaged vertical transfer students' academic performance in the first year posttransfer and retention between the first and second year posttransfer. For too many community college students, transferring to a four-year institution for a bachelor’s degree (i.e., vertical transfer) remains an unrealized aspiration. Prior research suggests that forms of capital can assist students in realizing their goals. Therefore, we sought to explore how relationships both within and outside of their institutions serve as sources of capital to support students’ vertical transfer journeys. Utilizing a qualitative research design, we applied Putnam’s (2000) two forms of social capital (bridging and bonding) and eight social support-related constructs from Moser’s (2013) expanded transfer student capital framework to data from focus groups and interviews with 33 pre- and post-transfer students. We found that participants actively constructed a patchwork of supportive relationships with both institutional agents and individuals external to the institution, which they utilized to search for, gather, and employ transfer capital. Our findings highlight that relationships outside of institutions are as crucial as relationships within the institution as sources of capital for vertical transfer students, suggesting a need to incorporate extra-institutional relationships into transfer capital frameworks and institutional initiatives to support transfer students. We also recommend institutions invest in programs designed to build students’ social and transfer capital.

Introduction: Microbiome within plant tissues is pivotal for co-evolution with host plants. This microbiome can colonize the plant, with potential transmission via seeds between parents and offspring, affecting seedling growth and host plant adaptability to the environment. Methods: We employed 16S rRNA gene amplicon analysis to investigate the vertical distribution of core microbiome in cotton seeds across ecological niches [rhizosphere, root, stem, leaf, seed and seed-P (parental seed)] of the three cotton genotypes. Results: The findings demonstrated a significant decrease in microbiome diversity and network complexity from roots, stems, and leaves to seeds. The microenvironment exerted a more substantial influence on the microbiome structure of cotton than the genotypes. The core endophytic microorganisms in cotton seeds comprised 29 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) affiliated with Acidimicrobiia, Alphaproteobacteria, Bacilli, Bacteroidia, Clostridia, Gammaproteobacteria, and unclassified_Proteobacteria. These vertically transmitted taxa are widely distributed in cotton plants. Through 16S rRNA genebased function prediction analysis of the cotton microbiome, we preliminarily understood that there are potential differences in metabolic capabilities and phenotypic traits among microbiomes in different microhabitats. Discussion: In conclusion, this study demonstrated the crucial role of the microenvironment in influencing the cotton microbiome and offered insights into the structures and functions of the cotton seed microbiome, facilitating future crop yield enhancement through core seed microbiome regulation. Objective: Transfer student capital (TSC) helps community college students realize the potential for the transfer pathway to serve as a lower-cost option to a bachelor's degree. However, students' accrual of TSC depends on the quality and quantity of information networks and infrastructure; information asymmetry in these networks can impede students' transfer progress. Methods: Using interview data from stakeholders who support engineering transfer students at one research university and two community college partners, we apply a methodology that combines qualitative coding techniques (i.e., descriptive, process, and evaluative coding) with network and pathway analyses to explore an information network for coursework transfer in engineering. Results: Our findings illustrate the disjointed and complex web of information sources that transfer students may use to accrue TSC. We highlight pathways fraught with information asymmetry as well as information sources and processes that give promise to students' ability to accrue TSC and successfully navigate transfer of coursework vertically. Conclusions: An abundance of information sources and paths does not equate to a better transfer system. Utilizing network analysis to visualize and evaluate information sources and processes provides an additional method for evaluating information systems for transfer. Objective/Research Question: This research explores how community college students, who are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields and aspire to vertical transfer in STEM make choices about majors and transfer destinations. The question is important to advancing equity in STEM, which continues to perpetuate disparities in attainment for minoritized, first-generation, and financially disadvantaged students, who disproportionately enter higher education in community colleges. Methods: Using a longitudinal, qualitative research design, the study relied on semi-structured interviewing to generate in-depth evidence about student experiences. Results: Findings showed that career goals were uniformly influential to students, yet career information was unevenly available or comprehensible during community college. Students' choices about what to major in and where to transfer were iterative and intertwined, with these choices deeply connected to students' families and lifetime priorities. Delays in student decision-making tended to have less to do with uncertain individual preferences than to lack of information about a specific STEM major and its alignment with possible future degrees, transfer destinations, and career pathways, as well as contingencies associated with the transfer admission process. Conclusions/Contributions: This research demonstrated STEM-specific nuance in how underrepresented community college students navigate major, career, and transfer destination decision-making as well as the influence of family and location-based priorities in student choices. Future research should investigate how to best provide directional support for students' major and transfer destination decisions, including major-to-career awareness and the academic and personal dimensions of transfer. Drawing on data from the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS:04/09) and the Postsecondary Education Transcript Study (PETS), this study examined the risks associated with losing credits in the process of transferring between colleges. The effects of credit loss are considered on the timing of degree completion and student loan debt among vertical transfers who first enroll at community colleges in addition to lateral transfers from four-year colleges. Findings suggest that credit loss functions differently across transfer pathways. Whereas transfers from four-year public colleges owe more in student loans when credits are lost, vertical transfers have a lower probability of completing a bachelor's degree—though they also appear to be marginally protected if they move to public four-year colleges. The evolution of endosymbionts and their hosts can lead to highly dynamic interactions with varying fitness effects for both the endosymbiont and host species. Wolbachia, a ubiquitous endosymbiont of arthropods and nematodes, can have both beneficial and detrimental effects on host fitness. We documented the occurrence and patterns of transmission of Wolbachia within the Hawaiian Drosophilidae and examined the potential contributions of Wolbachia to the rapid diversification of their hosts. Screens for Wolbachia infections across a minimum of 140 species of Hawaiian Drosophila and Scaptomyza revealed species-level infections of 20.0%, and across all 399 samples, a general infection rate of 10.3%. Among the 44 Wolbachia strains we identified using a modified Wolbachia multi-locus strain typing scheme, 30 (68.18%) belonged to supergroup B, five (11.36%) belonged to supergroup A, and nine (20.45%) had alleles with conflicting supergroup assignments. Co-phylogenetic reconciliation analysis indicated that Wolbachia strain diversity within their endemic Hawaiian Drosophilidae hosts can be explained by vertical (e.g., co-speciation) and horizontal (e.g., host switch) modes of transmission. Results from stochastic character trait mapping suggest that horizontal transmission is associated with the preferred oviposition substrate of the host, but not the host's plant family or island of occurrence. For Hawaiian Drosophilid species of conservation concern, with 13 species listed as endangered and 1 listed as threatened, knowledge of Wolbachia strain types, infection status, and potential for superinfection could assist with conservation breeding programs designed to bolster population sizes, especially when wild populations are supplemented with laboratory-reared, translocated individuals. Future research aimed at improving the understanding of the mechanisms of Wolbachia transmission in nature, their impact on the host, and their role in host species formation may shed light on the influence of Wolbachia as an evolutionary driver, especially in Hawaiian ecosystems. Marine heatwaves are increasingly subjecting organisms to unprecedented stressful conditions, but the biological consequences of these events are still poorly understood. Here we experimentally tested the presence of carryover effects of heatwave conditions on the larval microbiome, settlers growth rate and metamorphosis duration of the temperate sponge Crella incrustans. The microbial community of adult sponges changed significantly after ten days at 21°C. There was a relative decrease in symbiotic bacteria, and an increase in stress-associated bacteria. Sponge larvae derived from control sponges were mainly characterised by a few bacterial taxa also abundant in adults, confirming the occurrence of vertical transmission. The microbial community of sponge larvae derived from heatwave-exposed sponges showed significant increase in the endosymbiotic bacteria Rubritalea marina. Settlers derived from heatwave-exposed sponges had a greater growth rate under prolonged heatwave conditions (20 days at 21°C) compared to settlers derived from control sponges exposed to the same conditions. Moreover, settler metamorphosis was significantly delayed at 21°C. These results show, for the first time, the occurrence of heatwave-induced carryover effects across life-stages in sponges and highlight the potential role of selective vertical transmission of microbes in sponge resilience to extreme thermal events. Objective: Few community college students who aspire to transfer ever do so. Prior research suggests that relationships with advisors, faculty, and administrators may play an important role in promoting successful transfer outcomes, particularly for traditionally underserved students. This study examines how students identified and weighed possible transfer destination colleges, and how dedicated and personalized advisement shaped students' transfer plans and contributed to their transfer outcomes. Method: This mixed-methods study uses interviews to explore students' transfer planning processes, as well as student record data to examine transfer outcomes. Analyses compare students who received personalized transfer advising through a community college honors program and similarly qualified transfer-aspiring peers attending the same six community colleges who received "business as usual" advising. Results: Findings suggest that personalized advisement and relationships with transfer advisors contributed to higher rates of transfer and may support transfer to more-selective destinations. Contributions: This research extends the literature on community college transfer by tracing students' planning processes, exploring factors that raise or lower transfer aspirations, and estimating the effects of an advising-intensive honors program on students' transfer outcomes, including the selectivity of their transfer destinations. Heavy metals leaching can be reduced in soils with low adsorption properties using stabilizers. Our objective was to study the effect of zeolite, ZnO, and CuO nanoparticles on cadmium (Cd2+), copper (Cu2+), cobalt (Co2+), nickel (Ni2+), and zinc (Zn2+) retention in a sandy loam soil using both repacked soil column and batch adsorption experiments. The stabilized soil samples for filling the column were prepared by adding 2% CuO, ZnO nanoparticles, and zeolite and were packed uniformly with a bulk density of 1.35 g cm–3 and were saturated with 0.01 M CaCl2 before beginning the experiments. The columns were leached with a solution contains 50 mg l−1 Cd2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+. In comparison to the control, the retardation factor value indicated that the addition of ZnO nanoparticles to the sandy loam soil had the greatest effect on decreasing the mobility of heavy metals, with the following trend: Cu2+ > Co2+ > Cd2+ > Ni2+. The order of adsorption amount of the selected heavy metals under single adsorption conditions for all treatments was as follows: Cu2+ > Zn2+ > Ni2+ > Cd2+ > Co2+, while in multi-component solutions, the highest sorption was found for Cu2+ and Co2+, indicating that in both systems, stabilized soils had more adsorption capacity for Cu2+ and Co2+ than the control soil. It was observed that during both tests, the adsorption and retention of all selected heavy metals in nanoparticles stabilized soils were potentially high compared to zeolite stabilized soil. Presently, there is an intensive search for fungal endophytes to be used in agriculture for the protection and condition improvement of plants and in medicine. We screened for the presence of endophytes in raspberry, which occurs naturally in the Białowieża Forest. The fungal isolates representative of each morphotype were analysed using the molecular markers ITS1 and ITS2. In total, we found 34 taxa of endophytic fungi. The majority were potential pathogens. As many as 27 taxa were found in the leaves of mature plants. No fungi could be isolated from the surface sterilized seeds obtained from these plants. Seedlings were grown from the seeds deposited in the soil seed bank in the Białowieża Geobotanical Station of the University of Warsaw in Białowieża. 8 taxa of endophytic fungi were found in seedlings. A major obstacle to in-depth investigation of the immune response against Nipah virus (NiV) infection is its rapid progression and high mortality rate. This paper described novel information on the vertical transfer of immune properties. In January 2020, a female aged below five years and her mother from Faridpur district of Bangladesh were infected. Both had a history of raw date palm sap consumption and were diagnosed as confirmed NiV cases. The daughter passed away, and the mother survived with significant residual neurological impairment. She conceived one and a half year later and was under thorough antenatal follow-up by the surveillance authority. A healthy male baby was born. As part of routine survivor follow-up, specimens were collected from the newborn and tested for NiV infection at the reference laboratory to exclude vertical transmission. Although testing negative for anti-Nipah IgM and PCR for NiV, a high titre of anti-Nipah IgG was observed. The transfer of humoral immunity against NiV from mother to neonate was confirmed for the first time. The article will serve as a reference for further exploration regarding NiV-specific antibodies that are transferred through the placenta, their potential to protect newborns, and how this may influence vaccine recommendations.

Pregnant women have been carefully observed during the COVID-19 pandemic, as the pregnancy-specific immune adaptation is known to increase the risk for infections. Recent evidence indicates that even though most pregnant have a mild or asymptomatic course, a severe course of COVID-19 and a higher risk of progression to diseases have also been described, along with a heightened risk for pregnancy complications. Yet, vertical transmission of the virus is rare and the possibility of placental SARS-CoV-2 infection as a prerequisite for vertical transmission requires further studies. We here assessed the severity of COVID-19 and onset of neonatal infections in an observational study of women infected with SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy. Our placental analyses showed a paucity of SARS-CoV-2 viral expression ex vivo in term placentae under acute infection. No viral placental expression was detectable in convalescent pregnant women. Inoculation of placental explants generated from placentas of non-infected women at birth with SARS-CoV-2 in vitro revealed inefficient SARS-CoV-2 replication in different types of placental tissues, which provides a rationale for the low ex vivo viral expression. We further detected specific SARS-CoV-2 T cell responses in pregnant women within a few days upon infection, which was undetectable in cord blood. Our present findings confirm that vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is rare, likely due to the inefficient virus replication in placental tissues. Despite the predominantly benign course of infection in most mothers and negligible risk of vertical transmission, continuous vigilance on the consequences of COVID-19 during pregnancy is required, since the maternal immune activation in response to the SARS-CoV2 infection may have long-term consequences for children’s health.

Presence of some genera, such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Corynebacterium, Cutibacterium (formerly known as Propionibacterium), Lactobacillus, Lactococcus and Bifidobacterium, has been detected by both culture-dependent and culture-independent approaches. DNA from some gut-associated strict anaerobes has also been repeatedly found and some studies have revealed the presence of cells and/or nucleic acids from viruses, archaea, fungi and protozoa in human milk. Colostrum and milk microbes are transmitted to the infant and, therefore, they are among the first colonizers of the human gut. Still, the significance of human milk microbes in infant gut colonization remains an open question. Clinical studies trying to elucidate the question are confounded by the profound impact of non-microbial human milk components to intestinal microecology. Modifications in the microbiota of human milk may have biological consequences for infant colonization, metabolism, immune and neuroendocrine development, and for mammary health. However, the factors driving differences in the composition of the human milk microbiome remain poorly known. In addition to colostrum and milk, breast tissue in lactating and non-lactating women may also contain a microbiota, with implications in the pathogenesis of breast cancer and in some of the adverse outcomes associated with breast implants. This and other open issues, such as the origin of the human milk microbiome, and the current limitations and future prospects are addressed in this review.

Human milk is a complex liquid that contains multifaceted compounds which provide nutrition to infants and helps to develop their immune system. The presence of secretory immunoglobulins (IgA), leucocytes, lysozyme, lactoferrin, etc., in breast milk and their role in imparting passive immunity to infants as well as modulating development of an infant's immune system is well-established. Breast milk miRNAs (microRNAs) have been found to be differentially expressed in diverse tissues and biological processes during various molecular functions. Lactation is reported to assist mothers and their offspring to adapt to an ever-changing food supply. It has been observed that certain subtypes of miRNAs exist that are codified by non-human genomes but are still present in circulation. They have been termed as xeno-miRNA (XenomiRs). XenomiRs in humans have been found from various exogenous sources. Route of entry in human systems have been mainly dietary. The possibility of miRNAs taken up into mammalian circulation through diet, and thereby effecting gene expression, is a distinct possibility. This mechanism suggests an interesting possibility that dietary foods may modulate the immune strength of infants via highly specific post-transcriptional regulatory information present in mother's milk. This serves as a major breakthrough in understanding the fundamentals of nutrition and cross-organism communication. In this review, we elaborate and understand the complex crosstalk of XenomiRs present in mother's milk and their plausible role in modulating the infant immune system against infectious and inflammatory diseases.

Abstract Background The majority of Eukaryotic genomes are composed of a small portion of stable (non-mobile) genes and a large fraction of parasitic mobile elements such as transposable elements and endogenous viruses: the Mobilome. Such important component of many genomes are normally underscored in genomic analysis and detailed characterized mobilomes only exists for model species. In this study, we used a combination of de novo and homology approaches to characterize the Mobilome of two non-model parasitoid wasp species. Results The different methodologies employed for TE characterization recovered TEs with different features as TE consensus number and size. Moreover, some TEs were detected only by one or few methodologies. RepeatExplorer and dnaPipeTE estimated a low TE content of 5.86 and 4.57% for Braconidae wasp and 5.22% and 7.42% for L. boulardi species, respectively. Both mobilomes are composed by a miscellaneous of ancient and recent elements. Braconidae wasps presented a large diversity of Maverick/Polintons Class II TEs while other TE superfamilies were more equally diverse in both species. Phylogenetic analysis of reconstructed elements showed that vertical transfer is the main mode of transmission. Conclusion Different methodologies should be used complementarity in order to achieve better mobilome characterization. Both wasps genomes have one of the lower mobilome estimates among all Hymenoptera genomes studied so far and presented a higher proportion of Class II than Class I TEs. The large majority of superfamilies analyzed phylogenetically showed that the elements are being inherited by vertical transfer. Overall, we achieved a deep characterization of the mobilome in two non-model parasitoid wasps improving our understanding of their evolution.

The early bifidobacterial colonization and development of infant gut is considered crucial for the immediate and lifelong health of human host. This study longitudinally analyzed and characterized fecal bifidobacterial profiles in association with feeding regimens observed in six infants during 5 months after birth. The dominant fecal microbiota of bifidobacteria, lactobacilli/enterococci, clostridia, bacteroides and eubacteria were specifically enumerated using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) technique. Breastfeeding exhibited close association with the predomination of bifidobacteria with the highest relative abundance of 32–70% detected in both infants with exclusive breastfeeding. The nested PCR-DGGE technique revealed high diversity existing within a bifidobacterial species with multiple strain variants of B. bifidum, B. longum, B. breve and B. dentium continuously detected in feces of exclusively breast- and combination-fed infants over the period of 5 months. Contrarily, B. breve, B. adolescentis, B. dentium, B. bifidum, B. faecale, B. kashiwanohense and B. lactis detected in all exclusively formula-fed infants seem to be transient species. The persisting strains seem to derive primarily from maternal breastmilk as demonstrated by PCR-DGGE profiles of human milk and feces from three mother-infant pairs. Zika virus (ZIKV) infection is now firmly linked to congenital Zika syndrome (CZS), including fetal microcephaly. While Aedes species of mosquito are the primary vector for ZIKV, sexual transmission of ZIKV is a significant route of infection. ZIKV has been documented in human, mouse, and nonhuman primate (NHP) semen. It is critical to establish NHP models of the vertical transfer of ZIKV that recapitulate human pathogenesis. We hypothesized that vaginal deposition of ZIKV-infected baboon semen would lead to maternal infection and vertical transfer in the olive baboon (Papio anubis). Epidemiological studies suggest an increased rate of CZS in the Americas compared to the original link to CZS in French Polynesia; therefore, we also compared the French Polynesian (FP) ZIKV isolate to the Puerto Rican (PR) isolate. Timed-pregnant baboons (n-6) were inoculated via vaginal deposition of baboon semen containing 106 focus-forming units (FFU) of ZIKV (n-3 for FP isolate H/PF/2013; n-3 for PR isolate PRVABC59) at midgestation (86 to 95 days of gestation [dG]; term, 183 dG) on day 0 (all dams) and then at 7-day intervals through 3 weeks. Maternal blood, saliva, and cervicovaginal wash (CVW) samples were obtained. Animals were euthanized at 28 days (n-5) or 39 days (n-1) after the initial inoculation, and maternal/fetal tissues were collected. Viremia was achieved in 3/3 FP ZIKV-infected dams and 2/3 PR ZIKV-infected dams. ZIKV RNA was detected in CVW samples of 5/6 dams. ZIKV RNA was detected in lymph nodes but not the ovaries, uterus, cervix, or vagina in FP isolate-infected dams. ZIKV RNA was detected in lymph nodes (3/3), uterus (2/3), and vagina (2/3) in PR isolate-infected dams. Placenta, amniotic fluid, and fetal tissues were ZIKV RNA negative in the FP isolateinfected dams, whereas 2/3 PR isolate-infected dam placentas were ZIKV RNA positive. We conclude that ZIKV-infected semen is a means of ZIKV transmission during pregnancy in primates. Using the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002), this paper analyzes students' baccalaureate attainment and early labor market performance, comparing 2-year college and 4-year institution entrants and exploring the potential heterogeneous treatment effects of initiating one's college experience in a 2-year college by individual pre-college academic preparation. Utilizing propensity score matching on a rich set of student demographic characteristics, academic and high school attributes, we find that 2-year college entry sharply reduces baccalaureate aspirants' likelihood of earning a baccalaureate, and such negative effects are particularly pronounced for students in the highest quartile of pre-college math ability. In terms of labor market outcomes, female 2-year college entrants are less likely to gain full-time employment, as compared to their female 4-year institution counterparts. We also examine various mechanisms that may hinder 2-year college entrants' baccalaureate completion, including the impact of 2-year college attendance on early academic progress, challenges of the transfer process, loss of credits at the point of transfer, and post-transfer academic shock. Numerous studies have investigated the consequences of vertical transfer on students' higher education outcomes in comparison to "native 4-year students"—those who went straight from high school into a bachelor's program. However, the long-term labor market outcomes for vertical transfer students are understudied. Using nationally-representative data from the National Survey of College Graduates 2015, we estimate the relationship between starting in a community college (vs. at a 4-year college) and postcollege earnings and employment, in ways that correct for selection bias and overdispersion. We estimate a roughly 14% earnings disadvantage for baccalaureates who started at a 2-year rather than 4-year institution, regardless of college major. Airborne sediment fluxes were measured in southern Tunisia on two experimental plots tilled with a moldboard and a tiller plough, respectively, during five wind erosion events of different intensities. The sediment fluxes were sampled on both plots using a mast equipped with seven sand traps positioned between ≈10 and 120 cm height. The windblown sediment fluxes in the 0–100 cm layer were about eight times higher on the plot tilled using the tiller plough compared to the plot tilled using the moldboard plough due to different efficiencies in the trapping of the saltating particles in the furrow, depending on the ridges characteristics. On both plots, sediment fluxes of larger particles were depleted in the sediment samplers compared to the proportions measured in the soil from which they were derived. When examining the sediment flux in the 30–100 cm layer, we observed that the efficiency of the vertical transfer was about twice higher on the moldboard plot than on the tiller one. This implies that a higher fraction of the sediment mobilized by wind can be transported over long distances in the case of a surface ploughed with a moldboard. This result could reduce in part the benefit of using the moldboard instead of the tiller plough regarding soil loss by wind erosion.

Introduction: Microbiome within plant tissues is pivotal for co-evolution with host plants. This microbiome can colonize the plant, with potential transmission via seeds between parents and offspring, affecting seedling growth and host plant adaptability to the environment., Methods: We employed 16S rRNA gene amplicon analysis to investigate the vertical distribution of core microbiome in cotton seeds across ecological niches [rhizosphere, root, stem, leaf, seed and seed-P (parental seed)] of the three cotton genotypes., Results: The findings demonstrated a significant decrease in microbiome diversity and network complexity from roots, stems, and leaves to seeds. The microenvironment exerted a more substantial influence on the microbiome structure of cotton than the genotypes. The core endophytic microorganisms in cotton seeds comprised 29 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) affiliated with Acidimicrobiia , Alphaproteobacteria , Bacilli , Bacteroidia , Clostridia , Gammaproteobacteria , and unclassified_ Proteobacteria . These vertically transmitted taxa are widely distributed in cotton plants. Objectives: In this study, we explore the influence of enrolling initially at a community college before transferring to a 4-year institution on the selectivity of the destination 4-year institution. Method: We leverage nationally representative data and a propensity score matching approach to compare the institutional selectivity between students who begin at a community college before transferring to a 4-year institution and those who begin at a 4-year college or university. To estimate the relationship between the community college pathway and institutional selectivity, we employ an ordinal logistic regression model. Results: We find that transferring from a community college to a 4-year institution had a positive influence on the selectivity of students' destination 4-year institution. More specifically, students who enroll initially at a community college before transferring to a 4-year institution have a greater probability of attending a very selective 4-year institution and moderately selective 4-year institution when compared with native 4-year students. Students who transferred from a community college have a lower probability of attending minimally selective 4-year institutions and open-admission 4-year institutions when compared with otherwise-similar students who began at a 4-year institution. Contributions: By showing a positive relationship between the vertical transfer and the level of selectivity of students' destination 4-year institution, this study highlights a potential benefit of beginning at a community college before transferring to a 4-year institution. Objective: This study examines the role of community colleges in closing the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by studying whether beginning at a community college improves the likelihood of female students earning their bachelor's degree in STEM. Method : Using nationally representative data, we apply a propensity score matching approach to reduce the selection bias associated with a prospective student's decision to begin at a community college rather than a 4-year institution. For each gender group, we employ a logistic regression model to estimate the influence of the community college pathway on STEM bachelor's degree attainment. Results : We find that enrolling initially at a community college has a negative influence on students' bachelor's degree attainment in STEM for the pooled sample and male subsample. However, this finding does not hold for the female subsample, indicating that female students who attend community college before transferring to a 4-year institution are not less likely to obtain a bachelor's degree in STEM. Although additional analyses indicate that community college starters are more likely to drop out from a STEM bachelor's degree program, the impact only exists for the pooled and male samples but not for female students. Contributions : Considering the significant efforts community colleges have devoted toward creating a suitable environment for female students in which to thrive, this study provides empirical evidence that community colleges have the potential to narrow the STEM achievement gap between gender groups and provide significant utility for female students seeking a bachelor's degree in STEM fields. The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument that can be used to identify factors that influence the success of vertical transfer students in agricultural education. The specific objectives of this study were: identify perceived factors that influence the bachelor's degree attainment of vertical transfer students in agricultural education, and identify trends which impact students' completion of a bachelor's degree in agricultural education transfer students. The framework of this study is based on a union of the Schlossberg's Transition Theory (1981) and Rendón's Validation Theory (1994). The expert panel consisted of ten participants identified as leaders in post-secondary agriscience education. The findings of this study identified factors that are most influential to the bachelor's degree attainment of vertical transfer students in agricultural education. Student attendance and preparation for class were indicated as significant factors influencing persistence to graduation. Courses that are designed to be engaging and present real-life applications promote degree completion were found to be of importance to bachelor's degree completion. Faculty members have a significant role in the successful degree completion of vertical transfer students by developing engaging courses, presenting real-life applications for classroom material, and allowing for meaning relationships to be established with vertical transfer students. Zugleich wird reflektiert, dass auch religionswissenschaftliche Forschung Grenzen definiert und dabei mit dem Forschungsfeld interagiert. Religiöse und wissenschaftliche Diskurse werden als Bereiche eines interdependenten und miteinander verwobenen Kontinuums konzeptualisiert, innerhalb dessen die Grenzen nie ganz fixiert oder undurchlässig sind. Indem Konstruktionsprozesse von Islam oder muslimischen Identitäten an den Schnittstellen unterschiedlicher Felder geschehen, rücken Grenzen nicht nur als Werkzeug für politische Strategien in den Blick, sondern auch als Kontaktzonen, Schwellen und Orte von Transfers und Wissensproduktion. Die Einleitung betont daher den religionswissenschaftlichen Beitrag zur Konstruktion von Islam und diskutiert die (Selbst-)Verortung der Disziplin in diesem Spannungsfeld. This introduction outlines the theoretical framework of the articles of this volume, which deal with practices of demarcation, differentiation and relocation of boundaries in fields related to Islam. At the same time, it reflects on the fact that the study of religion is also itself involved in the process of defining boundaries through interaction with its field of research. Religious and academic discourses are understood as spheres within an interdependent and entangled continuum in which boundaries are never completely fixed or impermeable. As the construction of Islam and Muslim identities happens at the convergence of different fields, boundaries move into sight not only as tools for political strategies, but also as contact zones, thresholds and sites of transfers and knowledge production. This paper, therefore, points to the scientific contribution made by academic discourse to the construction of Islam and discusses the question of where the study of religion is situated, or rather, is situating itself. This study examines the influence of first-year online enrollment on the long-term academic outcomes of postsecondary students. Using a nationally representative sample and propensity score weighting, I find that enrolling in some online courses is associated with lower odds of dropping out of college. Additional results reveal a positive relationship between enrolling in some online courses and sub-baccalaureate indicators of long-term academic success, such as earning an associate’s degree and transferring from a community college to a 4-year institution. Water samples from wells and samples from soil nearby them were taken during dry (June-September 2013) and wet (December 2013, January - February 2014) seasons and concentrations of Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were determined. Contamination Factor for each heavy metal and Nemerow pollution index were calculated showing a decrease in contamination degree from summer to winter for soil and an increase in case of groundwater. Vertical transfer of pollutants from top soil to groundwater was assessed using Hierarchical Cluster Analysis, significant correlations between concentrations and composition of soil being found. In case of Ni, the variables corresponding to the concentrations from soil and groundwater were part of the same cluster, in both seasons, the distribution maps of concentrations confirming the pattern of transfer.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on 2D/3D composite structure have shown enormous potential to combine high efficiency of 3D perovskite with high stability of 2D perovskite. However, there are still substantial non-radiative losses produced from trap states at grain boundaries or on the surface of conventional 2D/3D composite structure perovskite film, which limits device performance and stability. In this work, a multifunctional magnetic field-assisted interfacial embedding strategy is developed to construct 2D/3D composite structure. The composite structure not only improves crystallinity and passivates defects of perovskite layer, but also can efficiently promote vertical hole transport and provide lateral barrier effect. Meanwhile, the composite structure also forms a good surface and internal encapsulation of 3D perovskite to inhibit water diffusion. As a result, the multifunctional effect effectively improves open-circuit voltage and fill factor, reaching maximum values of 1.246 V and 81.36%, respectively, and finally achieves power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.21%. The unencapsulated devices also demonstrate highly improved long-term stability and humidity stability. Furthermore, an augmented performance of 21.23% is achieved, which is the highest PCE of flexible device based on 2D/3D composite perovskite films coupled with the best mechanical stability due to the 2D/3D alternating structure., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Objective: This study develops an analytical framework for identifying effective partnerships between 2- and 4-year institutions that enable community college entrants to transfer to a 4-year institution and earn a bachelor’s degree in a timely fashion. Method: Using the individual term-by-term college enrollment and degree records from the National Student Clearinghouse for the entire 2007 fall cohort of first-time-in-college community college students nationwide, we use regressions to control for student and institutional characteristics in identifying effective partnerships in two steps: first, we identify community colleges with large residual values (better than expected outcomes); and second, we identify the 4-year partners of those community colleges with large residual values. Results: Descriptive results on the variation in transfer outcomes among the thousands of unique transfer partnerships nationally are presented alongside results from regressions used in the two-step effective transfer partnership identification. Contributions: Recommendations and considerations for using this framework to evaluate and benchmark institutional performance in supporting the academic success of vertical transfer students for baccalaureate attainment are also discussed. Atmospheric input of anthropogenic lead increased globally over the last centuries. The present study shows that the concentrations of lead in sediment cores from low-productivity Hudson Bay, northern Canada, remained relatively constant over the last centuries. The lack of imprint of the increased anthropogenic lead input in this marine environment is not consistent with the increased lead concentrations in nearby lakes over the same period. In addition, the observed trend in lead isotopic composition in our cores suggests an apparent progressive overprint of anthropogenic lead during the 1900s. In other words, isotopes clearly registered the increasingly anthropogenic nature of lead in the sedimentary record, but total lead concentrations remained constant, indicating that some process limited the export of lead to the sediment. These observations point to a long-term limitation of the downward export of particles in Hudson Bay. Given that the source of lead was the same for both Hudson Bay and neighboring high-productivity lakes, we hypothesize that the very low primary productivity of Hudson Bay waters was responsible for the low vertical export of lead to marine sediments. We further propose that primary productivity is the most important factor that generally drives the vertical export of particulate matter, and thus hydrophobic contaminants, in near-oligotrophic marine environments. Rivers, surface runoff, and the wind all transport microplastics (MPs) to the ocean. There is a knowledge gap concerning the distribution of microplastics in transitional subterranean estuaries. Here, we report the presence of microplastics in the pore water, groundwater, and sea water from four locations in southwest India. Pore water, groundwater, and seawater had mean MP abundances (± standard deviations) of 0.75 (±0.66), 0.15 (±0.1), and 0.11 (±0.07) MPs/l, respectively. Fibres were the dominant category of MPs found. Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy revealed the presence of polymers like polyester, low-density polyethylene, and polystyrene. Possible sources of microplastic are fishing activities, tourism, and coastal residents. The microplastics-derived risk assessment scores indicate severe risk to the ecosystems. Fibrous microplastics in pore water indicate that these linear particles can migrate vertically through sandy sediments, reaching subterranean estuaries. We believe submarine groundwater discharge can act as a possible pathway for microplastics to enter the oceans. The Linnan Sag is one of the main oil-producing units in the Huimin Depression, Eastern China, and the pore pressure gradients obtained from drill stem tests (DSTs) range from 9.0 to 16.0 MPa/km. Uncertainty about the origin and distribution of abnormally high pressures in the Linnan Sag has led to different interpretations of hydrocarbon accumulation and resource assessments, and it interferes with safe drilling. In the Linnan Sag, mudstone compaction curves are substantially affected by several non-compaction factors, and the normal trend of the compaction curve is difficult to determine. The determination of the origin and distribution of overpressure in the Linnan Sag is a challenge. In this study, the factors that may affect mudstone compaction—such as the shale volume, higher calcareous, and organic matter content—were carefully examined and processed. The pressures in the mudstones were estimated by the corrected mudstone compaction curves, which were compiled from acoustic, density, and neutron logs, and calibrated using DST and mud weight data. The log response−vertical effective stress and acoustic velocity-density crossplots were used to identify the mechanisms that generate overpressure. The comprehensive compaction curve shows that the mudstones in the overpressured layer exhibit clear disequilibrium compaction characteristics. The logging response crossplots demonstrate that those overpressured points were consistent with the loading curve. The findings suggest that, the fundamental mechanism resulting in overpressures is the disequilibrium compaction of thick Paleocene mudstones. Hydrocarbon generation and vertical transfer of overpressure may be the main unloading mechanisms, which corresponds to the overpressure points that deviate from the loading curves. Since organic matter cracking may occur in formations at depths greater than 4000 m (Ro > 1.0%), the contribution of hydrocarbon generation to overpressuring is expected to be limited. The transfer of overpressure through opening faults is therefore considered to be the main cause of higher overpressure in local sandstones. The overpressures in the mudstones are characterized by a gradual decrease from the center to the margin in the Linnan Sag. The pressure in the isolated sand bodies are generally similar to that in the surrounding mudstones, whereas it can be lower or higher when the overpressure in the sand bodies are vertically transferred by faults to other pressure systems. The results of this analysis provide an indication of the magnitude, mechanism, and distribution of overpressure in the Linnan Sag. This insight can be used to guide further exploration of the Linnan Sag and similar geological basins.

Purpose: This article examines the literature on the transfer function in American higher education, and it reviews three primary dimensions of transfer: (a) the transfer function and pathways, (b) transfer access and experiences, and (c) state transfer policy. Argument: This literature review engages core transfer concepts and we argue that the literature is dominated by the vertical transfer pathway, despite multiple transfer pathways and definitions. The research also suggests that students’ transfer experiences and outcomes are not equal, institutional cultures and policies are not designed to support diverse students, and the inadequate transfer structures and policies need to be reformed to improve transfer outcomes for students of color, low-income students, and first-generation students. Finally, we argue that the nature and distribution of state transfer policies is uneven and the impact of state transfer policies on student outcomes is mixed, so we know little about their efficacy. The interaction between vertical and lateral movements of soil constituents by tillage needs to be addressed to better understand the transfer processes of soil constituents on a hillslope. In this experiment, traditional tillage by consecutive hoeing during a few days and the cesium-137 ( 137 Cs) tracing were performed in the Sichuan Basin, China to demonstrate direct effects of intensive tillage on the vertical redistribution of soil constituents and the interaction between vertical and lateral transfers of soil constituents. The changes in 137 Cs residual rates showed that intensive downslope movement of soil by tillage occurred along the transect of slopes, and the lateral transfer of those soil constituents proceeded in the same direction as the soil movement by tillage. The vertical transfer patterns differed from one another for the upper, middle, and lower slope positions. At the upper slope positions, intensive tillage notably decreased the concentrations of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) in the whole soil profile. At the middle and lower slope positions, SOC concentrations in the surface soil layer (0–15 cm) markedly declined after intensive tillage, suggesting that the downslope movement of soil by tillage translocated the soil with low concentrations of SOC and TN derived from upslope towards the middle and lower slopes. The decreases in SOC and TN of the surface soil exerted an important impact on the underlying soil near the surface soil due to the vertical transfer of soil constituents by mixture effects of tillage. Significant changes in the depth distribution pattern of soil constituents by intensive tillage occurred close to the upslope and downslope boundaries of the field Our results revealed that the vertical movement of soil constituents interacted with their downslope movement under intensive tillage, which resulted in a chain transfer process of soil constituents: effects of the vertical transfer at all landscape positions on the lateral transfer along the transect of slopes, and conversely, effects of the lateral transfer on the vertical transfer.
